I. The
Lion
A leaf of a calendar on the wall displays a lion, grand and tall. He views you regal and serene the whole of April seventeen. Reminding you, lest you forget, that he is not extinct as yet.
II.
The Hen
In the railroad station, never built for her, walks a hen to and fro. Where, where did the station master go? Will not men, harm the hen?
Let’s hope not.
Let’s candidly aver that our sympathy she still enjoys, even in this place, where she annoys.
III. Gallow’s Child’s Lullaby
Sleep, baby, sleep, there’s in the sky a sheep; the sheep is made of cloud and dew and fights life’s battle just like you. Sleep, baby, sleep.
Sleep, baby, sleep, the sun eats up the sheep, he laps it from the azure ground with tongue extended like a hound. Sleep, baby, sleep.
Sleep, baby, sleep, Now it is gone, the sheep. The moon appears and starts to chide her mate who runs, the sheep inside. Sleep, baby, sleep.
IV. Heaven and Earth
The nightwindhound wails like a child, his rain-soaked hide is all defiled.
He’s hunting now the newmoondame who flees along with twisted frame.
Way down below a darkish dot -the ranger- walks across the lot.
V. The Tortoitoise
"I am a thousand seasons old and getting on in age; the Gothic ruler Theobold confined me in a cage.
A lot has happened since that day, but what, I do not know. At present I am on display, for money, in a show.
All talk of death I can ignore as so much idle noise. I am the tor-, I am the tor-, I am the tor-toi-toise.”
VI. The Sparrow and the Kangaroo
Behind the fence, the kangaroo has on a sparrow cast his view.
The sparrow perches on the palehe doesn’t feel too hap and hale.
Uneasily he feels, instead, the mammal’s gaze and ducks his head.
The sparrow ruffles up his wingshe doesn’t trust the look of things.
A terror threatens to unseat him: What if the Kangaroo should eat him?
The latter, though, will briefly pause, then turn his head, perhaps for cause
(Or possibly without reflection) unto a different direction.
