Dunbar Russell Sloane (1942 – 2017)

After a seven year battle with cancer Dunbar Russell Sloane sadly passed away in August this year.

He retired from the business approximately five years ago, passing the business on to his son, Dunbar Michael Sloane.

Dunbar (III) joined the business when his father passed away in 1972. The main business was then, as it is now, on Waring Taylor Street in Wellington. However in 1972 the business occupied level one only, with auctions quickly rotated between weekly general auctions, antique auctions and art auctions.

Dunbar was responsible for the re-introduction of stand alone art sales after a thirty year gap. He also set up a public art company that was eventually taken over by Brierley Investments.

In 2000, after much deliberation between Dunbar III and IV, a branch was opened in Auckland on Parnell Road. It today functions as an agency for the main auction room in Wellington.

The business is in the hands of the fourth generation, with each “Dunbar” carrying the business forward in response to the evolving market, fashion and technology of the time. Each Dunbar also brings their own legacy and personality to the business, some of which will be shared shortly in a company history as we approach 100 years of continuous business.

This work came to New Zealand for one of the earliest exhibitions at Andre Brooke’s Gallery 91, the first commercial dealer gallery in Christchurch, late June 1959. This one-man show was the first large exhibition of MacDiarmid’s French paintings seen in New Zealand.

The show was opened by his old friend, crime writer and theatre producer Ngaio Marsh and well reported in local papers, in one of which this work was illustrated. Twelve of the 20 paintings sold on opening night, prompting the Christchurch Star to comment that if success was measured by the number of red dots on pictures, at prices to 70 guineas, he had arrived.

The Provence region of south east France is one of MacDiarmid’s favourite locations. In the 1950s he lived there for a time and later explored the back roads extensively, drawn to a diverse landscape of alps and plains, pine forests and olive groves, and the contrast of medieval heritage, traditional rural life and the coastal glamour of the French Riviera.

This hapu was recognised as the paramount hapu of the Tuhourangi because of its two main cheifs were of unbroken senior male descent from Puhaorangi. Rangihiroa married Parehe, a high-ranking lady from Ngati-Whakaue, and Ngaheke married back into Ngati Whakaue.

Ngaheke was painted a number of times by Goldie. He photographed her several times on his visits from Auckland and as the years passed, used his photographs increasingly as a resource for his drawings and paintings.

Mountford Tosswill [Toss] Woollaston was born in rural Huinga near Toko in Taranaki, the son of John Woollaston, a sharemilker, and his wife, Charlotte Tosswill. In 1928 at the age of 18 years he left the region to pick fruit on a Nelson orchard and took art lessons from Hugh Scott. Travelling to Dunedin to benefit from the enlightened modernist approach of Robert Nettleton Field at the local art school, he developed his signature expressionist technique alongside Colin McCahon and Doris Lusk. Marrying fellow artist Edith Alexander, he settled into art and orchard work in the Nelson region until a young family precipitated the move to Greymouth.

However it was to his Taranaki roots that he returned in the 1965 to refresh his landscape style. It was during this time that he established two important signature motifs – Bayly’s Hill and Mt Egmont, which he would repeat and continue to explore well into the 1970s. He made a determined effort to shift away from descriptive topographical painting to try and capture the energy inherent in the land itself. For the benefit of those who made disparaging remarks about his muddy palette, Woollaston explained that he wanted to paint the colour of the earth after it had absorbed the heat of the sun. This sensual and empathetic approach to depicting specific localities distinguishes his work from the realism of his contemporaries.

Charles Spencelayh was born in 1865, in Rochester, Kent, the youngest of 11 children whose father’s family firm of engineers and iron founders was far removed from the art world. However, at the age of 20, Charles enrolled at the National Art Training School in London, where he learned a meticulous and disciplined style of painting that was to endure throughout his career.

He subsequently continued his training in Paris, exhibiting at the Paris Salon, returning to England to become a founder member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters in 1897. The early years of his commercial career saw Spencelayh concentrate on painting miniature portraits. Indeed, he proved so talented in his detailed portraits, that he earned the nickname ‘the Human Camera’.

The turning point in Spencelayh’s career came in the early 1920s when he came under the patronage of Mr. Levy, a rich Manchester cotton merchant. It was while he was under the Levy patronage that Spencelayh produced his best work. His best-known picture is probably The Old Dealer (The Old Curiosity Shop) exhibited to great acclaim at the RA in 1925. Depicting an aged antiques dealer painting a birdcage. The work sold at Sotheby’s in December 2009 for £280,000 setting a world auction record price. for the artist.
