Colin McCahon (1919 - 1987)
“At the place called beach (which is black-purple sand) – we are looking north from Maori bay, one cliff south of Muriwai. This is where the older terns teach the little ones to swim & catch their own food… You will notice the cliff overhangs and this provides the necessary protection to raise little birds too as well as on the island rock.” – Colin McCahon to John Caselberg, 19 November 1971, MS4251/034, Colin and Anne McCahon papers, Hocken Collections
Muriwai – a windswept landscape. The only signs of life are a pertinacious gannet colony, and an artist contemplating his faith in an industrial shed.
After leaving his role as lecturer at Elam School of Fine Arts in 1971, Colin McCahon shifted his entire studio to Muriwai to take up full time painting. Living in incredible poverty for so many years, McCahon had finally found critical success and was making enough money to support himself, and his wife Anne, financially solely through his painting.
In Muriwai, McCahon found rich sources not just in subject, but also in metaphor. Observing the gannet colony, he recognized the same faith and heedlessness of his spirituality in the young chicks jumping off the cliff and trusting to fly – to him, the gannets represented the “human condition.”
In July of 1971, McCahon first used the phrase “necessary protection” when referring to the environment for gannets to breed and continue their cycle of life. The same phrase was increasingly given wider metaphorical application as scientific studies concluded global environmental change due to human pollution. McCahon hoped that in painting the landscape, others would find it necessary to protect too. Oaia Island also became an unescapable religious metaphor for McCahon. As a looming, dark presence beyond the shore, the island morphed into a deep-sea creature breeching before diving down once again. In metaphorical possibilities of a whale, Herman Melville’s epic 1851 novel Moby Dick inevitably became another inspiration, evoking a quality of sublimity in the series.
Bought at a school fair in the early 1970s, Oaia Island - Necessary Protection (1971) has been carefully cared for in a private collection in Lower Hutt for the past five decades. Until now, it has been enjoyed by few eyes.
