An extensive collection of over 300 lots of vintage cameras, including Victorian half and full plate, Leica cameras, photographic equipment and accessories.

Ron Melvin enjoyed a life-long passion for things photographic. In 1956 he was a founding member of the Tauranga District Photographic Society and was its president for four years. He served on the Council of the Photographic Society of NZ for a number of years and was the Society’s director responsible for the compiling and production of recorded lectures, which were distributed to camera clubs throughout the country.

He was a pioneer in sound slides - a slide presentation synchronised with recorded music and commentary, and in 1962 introduced the first nationwide sound-slide contest, which became a successful international annual event.

A qualified competition judge and lecturer for the PSNZ, he also taught night classes in photography and was an active and successful photographer himself.

In retirement collecting cameras became an absorbing interest for Ron. Instead of specialising in a particular make of camera he sought to compile a collection that revealed the broad history and development of photography. His collection included cameras, accessories, projectors, flash and darkroom equipment, images, magazines and books.
