• Independent Gemmological Reports and Valuations:

Valuations are made available to customers for two primary purposes: Firstly to provide an independent opinion as to the quality of the stones and metals comprising the piece, and Secondly so that buyers can, if they wish, obtain suitable Insurance cover immediately upon purchase and prior to delivery.

A valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculated replacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, such that an Insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It does not represent actual new retail replacement as it makes no provision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtained by individual bargaining. As fashion, desirability and current market forces all have variable impact on second hand or Auction value; there is no direct formula for estimation of such value by interpolation from Insurance value.

As the currency exchange rate and spot metal prices have a marked effect on jewellery valuations, buyers should note the date and prevailing economic factors at the time that the valuation was produced. Once all of the prevailing parameters have been established, it is possible for an experienced person to interpolate a rough estimate of the current cost of manufacture from past insurable value, but again that exercise will give no indication of actual market forces.

Buyers should also note the stated purpose of the valuation (insurance, retail market, cash value, estate division etc.). All valuations remain opinions and not matters of fact.

Whilst our staff will assist buyers to understand the methodology and technical details of Gemmological reports and valuations, buyers must make their own assessment of an item’s value before bidding. Dunbar Sloane, its consultants and employees make no representation or warranty regarding any outside opinion, valuation, or certificate of any item on offer.

Please note: where gemmological reports are available these should be read together with the catalogue description. Should there be, through error, omission or introduction of better evidence, any significant difference between the catalogued description and that provided in the gemmologist’s report, it shall be assumed that the buyer has inspected the report and is buying in acceptance of it. Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been assessed for weight, colour or clarity mounted and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore based on estimates which are limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given the stone will have been weighed loose, however while the grading of a stone loose will minimise error margins it shall be accepted by the buyer that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact.

Definitions: Last retail price: This is the last price at which the item was offered for sale, retail, as shown on the tag attached to the item, in the vendor’s shops. It is not a reflection of expected price at auction, which is anticipated to be substantially less. The vendor is prepared to meet the market, and the exciting opportunity is for the buyers to set the price.

AUCTIONEER Christopher Devereaux will be presenting the finest Jewels, Watches and Objects of Virtu in association with us in both Auckland and Wellington.

With over 35 years in the industry, Christopher brings an unrivalled depth of knowledge and experience. Over the past 23 years Christopher has been associated with the Auckland auction house Webb’s. During that time as an independent auctioneer, selling under his own licence, he single-handedly achieved several NZ record sale prices.

His achievements have deservedly been the subject of public acclaim and have been widely reported in the media. From his leading role in the television series ‘Going Going Gone’ to his frequent appearance in prominent newspaper articles, Christopher is probably the best known auctioneer in the country.

Who can forget the riveting stories that he told in the TV series of his sales which included a solid gold sheathed sword that was presented to Prime Minister David Lange and which had passed through the hands of controversial TV personality Paul Henry.

The brooch that used to belong to aviatrix Jean Batten that was bought by the late, and much beloved, Sir Paul Holmes. Then there was an exquisite gold box given by King Otto of Greece to a young naval officer Lieutenant Bird who rescued the King when he was baled up on Corfu. Lieutenant Bird went on to become the famous Admiral Bird who explored the Antarctic with his ships Erebus and Terror, the former the name of the mountain that is etched in our history. More recently Christopher achieved an Internationally recognised price of Last retail price $87,500 for a small, but exquisite, Lapis Lazuli, gold and diamond set box made by Fabergé which had been bought by the Austro-Hungarian Ambassador, Prince Kinsky in London on Christmas eve 1910.

The current record prices in NZ at auction for a solitaire diamond, Last retail price $229,000, an unset emerald in excess of Last retail price $80,000, and a wristwatch at Last retail price $85,000 were all achieved by him.

Dozens of other notable achievements over the past 23 years are all recorded in the archives of the word class catalogues that he wrote for publication by Webb’s.

Christopher is the only NZ based auctioneer who specialises solely in Jewellery, Watches and Objects of Virtu. He is the only auctioneer in NZ who travels regularly to International Jewellery Fairs; not to buy, but so that he is always currently informed as to market trends, fashions and prices. With a Master’s degree, Christopher brings scientific principles to his methodology and marketing, with proven success.
