Dunbar Sloane is delighted to announce that Christopher Devereaux will now be presenting the finest Jewels, Watches and Objects of Virtu in association with us in both Auckland and Wellington. With over 35 years in the industry, Christopher brings an unrivalled depth of knowledge and experience. Over the past 23 years Christopher has been associated with the Auckland auction house Webb’s. During that time as an independent auctioneer, selling under his own licence, he single handedly achieved several NZ record sale prices. His achievements have deservedly been the subject of public acclaim and have been widely reported in the media. From his leading role in the television series ‘Going Going Gone’ to his frequent appearance in prominent newspaper articles, Christopher is probably the best known auctioneer in the country. Who can forget the riveting stories that he told in the TV series of his sales which included a solid gold sheathed sword that was presented to Prime Minister David Lange and which had passed through the hands of controversial TV personality Paul Henry. The brooch that used to belong to aviatrix Jean Batten that was bought by the late, and much beloved, Sir Paul Holmes. Then there was an exquisite gold box given by King Otto of Greece to a young naval officer Lieutenant Bird who rescued the King when he was baled up on Corfu. Lieutenant Bird went on to become the famous Admiral Bird who explored the Antarctic with his ships Erebus and Terror, the former the name of the mountain that is etched in our history. More recently Christopher achieved an Internationally recognised price of $87,500 for a small, but exquisite, Lapis Lazuli, gold and diamond set box made by Fabergé which had been bought by the Austro-Hungarian Ambassador, Prince Kinsky in London on Christmas eve 1910. The current record prices in NZ at auction for a solitaire diamond, $229,000, an unset emerald in excess of $80,000, and a wristwatch at $85,000 were all achieved by him. Dozens of other notable achievements over the past 23 years are all recorded in the archives of the word class catalogues that he wrote for publication by Webb’s. Christopher is the only NZ based auctioneer who specialises solely in Jewellery, Watches and Objects of Virtu. He is the only auctioneer in NZ who travels regularly to International Jewellery Fairs; not to buy, but so that he is always currently informed as to market trends, fashions and prices. With a Master’s degree, Christopher brings scientific principles to his methodology and marketing, with proven success. His expertise is now available nationally. Based in our Auckland auction house he will also be available at our central Wellington auction complex on a regular basis. Our first sale in association with Christopher will be in Wellington on Saturday July the 6th. A massive clearance sale of some 200 lots of desirable Jewels. The first Auckland sale will be held in August and will be of the exciting standard and variety that is his hallmark. ENTRIES INVITED NOW FOR THE AUGUST AUCKLAND SALE AND FOR FUTURE SALES IN WELLINGTON. Ph. 09 630 9178 email. chris.devereaux@xtra.co.nz

Mark’s ‘private museum’ in Hamilton resembled a theatrical set with cabinets of curios, Maori Artefacts, taxidermy, militaria and motorbikes. Mark has been a frequent visitor to the New Zealand auction scene, accumulating the best over the years with an eye for both quality and diversity. Mark and his wife Glenda are moving to a smaller home and subsequently are downsizing their collection. Many of the items within this catalogue are to be sold at no reserve.

Oriental Almost all of the following 245 lots are from a private New Zealand collection. The gentleman began collecting in the 1970s as his business afforded him extensive travel throughout Northern Europe, the Middle East, and South East Asia including Taiwan and China. Inspired by the museums and art galleries visited, collecting started with mainly small sculptures, wood carvings, and paintings. Over the years it has turned into a serious hobby with numerous pieces purchased at auction throughout the world. Indeed, the auctions and galleries became the focal point of his travels. When visiting a Chinese porcelain exhibition 25 years ago his passion turned to this field of collecting. It grew to include Japanese and Korean porcelain, as well as Chinese. The vast majority of pieces within this collection are period pieces . Within this collection are period pieces spanning the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties and the Republic. However, as is becoming common practice with many auction houses, we have not dated the pieces in this catalogue. Note: Some images of lots with estimates less than $150 are not shown but can be viewed online at www.liveauctioneers.com 1

MILITARIA 782 Three Albums of Photographs Pertaining to Japan, c. 1921–1924 Albums dedicated to aircraft and top secret British Civil Aviation mission under command of Captain Sempill. Also includes aviation menus, postcards, letter of agreement/contract between Earwaker, Sempill, and captain of Japanese Navy, assemblage instructions and training notes. The Sempill Mission was a British aeronaval technical mission led by Captain Sempill and sent to Japan in September 1921, with the objective of helping the Imperial Japanese Navy develop its aeronaval forces. The mission consisted in a group of 29 instructors, headed by Captain Sempill, and stayed in Japan for 18 months.

68

DUNBAR SLOANE AUCKLAND

The Mission started training operation at the air base of Kasumigaura. The Japanese were trained on several new aircraft, such as the Gloster Sparrowhawk, in various techniques such as torpedo bombing and flight control. The Mission also brought the plans of the most recent British aircraft carriers, such as the HMS Argus and the HMS Hermes, which influenced the final stages of development of the Japanese aircraft carrier Hosho. Although the Hosho was already launched by that time, she became the first purposedesigned aircraft carrier in the world when she was commissioned in 1922, actually one year before the Hermes.

Provenance: Albums descended from Walter John Earwaker (1905 – 1965) who was the only New Zealander involved in the Sempill Mission Est. $1000–2000

823 FURTHER UNPUBLISHED MANUSCRIPTS OF VARIOUS ACCOUNTS WRITTEN BY PRIVATE JOHN P WARD, WHO SERVED IN THIRTY ONE ENGAGEMENTS OF BATTLE IN THE NEW ZEALAND WARS Ward mentions in a 17-page handwritten memoir of the attack on a strong Hauhau pa at Te Putahi in January 1866: ‘we advance quickly and just before reaching the top of the ridge – get several stray shots amongst us, many of them from our own people in the front proper – one of our chaps, a Campbell, is hit pretty severely in the leg – just over the ankle, and falls, heavily to the ground.’ Another typewritten manuscript describes the deplorable conditions the men of No. 6 Division, armed constabulary endured at ‘Woodalls’ redoubt whilst Wanganui was expecting an attack from Tito-Kowaru’s forces including an interesting insight into Gen. Whitmore’s demeanor during an inspection parade.

Also included is a typewritten letter dated 1909 furthering his previous correspondence to Sir Joseph Ward, premier and Minister of Defence., and in answer to a letter received from Sir Joseph in regards to a Veterans’ Pension Scheme. In a further 21-page manuscript is mentioned a fascinating account of the fall of Te Kooti’s trusted lieutenant Nikora. Nikora is saved from being tomahawked by a Ngati Porou ally, taken prisoner, and later gives a most intriguing insight into the disposition and mind-sight of the pa’s occupants. Special mention of Te Kooti himself regarding instructions and methods of escape should the pa should be overrun, and the brutal account of over 140 prisoners, recaptured ‘asleep in batches of twos and fours etc. under trees, and on the banks of streams, by the crafty Ngatiporou’ and marched back up to the pa and massacred by Ropata and others in retribution for ‘the Bay Raid’ previous.

‘Marched up the mountain again and shot like dogs, shot in cold blood, without a word of trial or explanation, and their starved bodies left to rot in the summer sun!’ Another penciled manuscript of 40 pages although at times difficult to decipher, describes the torrid conditions felt by soldiers of General Chutes forces during their march north from Wanganui towards Taranaki, bridging the Patea River, extreme hunger, heavy rain, contemplation of dining on horse meat and the overall discomfort whilst on the march. A 1925 BSA Deluxe (BSA Round Tank) Years in production: 1924–27. Engine: Single-cylinder side-valve four-stroke. Capacity: 249cc. Bore and stroke: 63 x 80mm. Tyres: 2.25 x 24in beaded edge type. Brakes: Friction block on dummy belt rim (rear only – two independent). Gearbox: 2-speed. Top speed: 43mph. Includes spare wheel and box of spares, manuals etc. For a long period in the inter-war years the giant BSA conglomerate dominated a booming motorcycle market in a way that

80

DUNBAR SLOANE AUCKLAND

no other British factory could claim to have done. Their attack on the lightweight 250cc singles market began in 1924 and was very much a new venture for BSA. It was known to be a difficult market, because over the preceding years, the public had been treated to many poorly designed and under engineered budget specials from other makers. As a result, the little BSA was solidly conventional with a side-valve four-stroke engine in place of the often unreliable two stroke. It was strong enough to take all that the most uncaring rider could throw at it and it was cheap – less than 40 pounds.

There was a belt and braces lubrication, with a new fangled mechanical pump as well as the old fashioned hand pump, plus a sight feed to reassure the anxious owner that all was well. The oil contained in the front section of the cylindrical tank that gave the model its name, the BSA round tank. Est. $8000–12000

A 1939 Royal Enfield D The Royal Enfield Bullet was originally a British overhead valve single cylinder four-stroke motorcycle made by Royal Enfield in Redditch, West Midlands, but now produced by Royal Enfield Motors, the successor to the British company, at Chennai, Tamil Nadu in India. The Royal Enfield Bullet has the longest production run of any motorcycle having remained continuously in production since 1948.

The bullet marquee is even older, and has passed 75 years of continuous production. The Royal Enfield and Bullet names derive from the company’s links with the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield, London. Introduced in 1931 as a four-stroke single cylinder motorcycle, this model was the first to feature the Bullet name. It differed in a number of ways from its successors (which are now familiar); it had an inclined engine with exposed valve gear featuring four valves per cylinder with 350cc and 500cc options. In 1933, a 250cc option

was also added to the range. Its frame was also considerably different, having centre-spring girder front forks, being among a new range of models from Royal Enfield that featured them, along with a saddle-type fuel tank. However, common to motorcycles of this period, it had a rigid rear-end, necessitating a ‘sprung’ seat for the rider, which resulted in the iconic look of the motorcycle that is much replicated today, even though the sprung seat is unnecessary in modern models. The terms and conditions under which the buyer acts at a sale are detailed at the back of this catalogue. We recommend that you read and understand these conditions of business before registering to bid at an auction. This sale is subject to the conditions of business printed in this catalogue and to the reserves. Viewing All lots are available for inspection prior to the sale. Although staff will endeavour to answer your enquiries, and give advice, the final decision to bid is at your discretion and liability. Pre-Sale Estimates The estimated prices printed below the catalogue descriptions are in New Zealand dollars and are the approximate prices expected to be realised, excluding buyers premium. They are not definitive, they are prepared well in advance of the sale and they are subject to revision. Condition reports Dunbar Sloane (Auckland) Ltd will provide a verbal condition report if you would like an opinion on any particular lot prior to purchasing. All goods are sold “as is” and it is up to the buyer to satisfy themselves as to the condition of an item before the auction. THE AUCTION Registration To bid at the auction you will need to register for a bidding number at the front desk either during the viewing or prior to the auction. Buying at the Auction Please bid clearly and promptly using your bidding number. When you successfully purchase a lot the auctioneer will ask you for your number, and this will show on your invoice. Approximate Selling Rate Auctions are generally conducted at the rate of about 100 lots per hour. However, this can vary. Absentee Bidding If you are unable to attend the auction, Dunbar Sloane (Auckland) Ltd can bid on your behalf according to your written instructions. This is a free service for intended buyers.
