FRIDAY JANUARY 24 2025

2:00PM | BRAUN RANCH | SIMMIE, SK

Welcome to our 10th sale at home. Wow, how did that happen?! Hopefully you can join us Jan. 24th for the sale. Come early to view the bulls and enjoy a great roast beef dinner by County Hills Catering. If you can’t make it sale day, the sale will be online with DLMS. We made the decision to move the sale up from March to January. This is a big change for us. We’re hoping by moving ahead of calving we will be able to enjoy the day a little more.

Videos will be available online at cattlevids.ca in early January. We try to keep active on facebook with bull pictures, videos and pictures of their dams. Feel free to call, text or email if we can help you select a bull. Visitors are always welcome and coffee’s always on.

BULL DEVELOPMENT: Weaning weights on the yearlings were taken Oct 6 2024 and the two year old weaning weights were taken Sept. 9 2023. Cattle are on a full vaccine program at birth, branding and preconditioning before weaning. They are wintered on free choice hay, greenfeed and are supplemented with brown oats and a bull ration. The two year olds are on grass from May to September. They are easy keeping, athletic and ready to work.

Semen Testing: With the earlier sale date this year, only the two year olds will be semen tested prior to the sale. Yearlings will be tested in March before delivery. If a yearling doesn’t pass we will offer a full refund or another bull of similar value out of the group that will sell as two year olds in 2026.

EPD’S AND CULLING: We cull our cows and bulls hard. First calvers are given a little leeway. We don’t put a whole lot of emphasis on EPD’s. We print them in the catalog so buyers can compare, if they like. We feel the breed organizations push them, but don’t do a good job of explaining how to use them. Some producers use EPD’s to promote cattle as being in the top 10% of the breed for a certain trait. That’s fine. However, for example, let’s look at milk numbers. More often than not, a cow with a really high milk number will require more feed to maintain herself, her calf, along with her ability to rebreed. We’re more focused on raising cattle that thrive in ranch conditions. Let’s look at ww and yw EPD’s. Sure, we all want to sell more pounds. However, at the end of the day, we can’t wean a 1000lb calf off a 1200lb ranch cow. It’s also been our experience that a really high yw EPD can lead to a larger cow. BW EPD’s are the most applicable in our opinion, if an actual scale weight is recorded and submitted. All our calves, both purebred and commercial, are weighed with a scale. We’ve found the tape is not accurate. You’ll find our EPD’s will be around breed average. However, we feel our cows are anything but average. Our cows sure aren’t perfect, but we‘re getting closer to where we want to be every year.

Craig and Carrie Braun

Lorraine was the youngest of four children, born to William and Agnes Crawford on March 11 1943. Lorraine was born and raised in Calgary. After graduation she began her career with AGT. It was there she met and became great friends with a couple of Braun girls, from Admiral. Through them she met their brother, Dick and the rest is history. Dick and Lorraine were married in Calgary on October 4 1969. They moved to the Braun family farm in Admiral, SK in April of 1970. In 1976 they purchased their dream ranch near Simmie. It was there Lorraine was kept busy raising a family, keeping a beautiful yard, growing a large garden along with all the aspects of farming and ranching. Lorraine loved the farm and never wanted to move back to the city. She was active in 4H as the general leader for the Simmie Multi Club. She also enjoyed photography and had several pictures published on the cover of the Canadian Hereford Digest as well as the Western Producer. A large part of her free time was spent compiling extensive family tree history for both her Crawford and Hayes sides. Lorraine enjoyed her daily walks on the ranch along with coffee row uptown in Simmie with great neighbours. She loved animals, birdwatching and the views from her kitchen window.

Lorraine always enjoyed visiting with the kids that spent time around Braun Ranch. In her honor we are going to be giving away one purebred open heifer, to a deserving youth between the ages of 8 and 21 every year going forward. To qualify, submit to us your plans or goals or hopes for what you’d like to do with this heifer. Send us a letter or email. We will make the draw on sale day and one lucky youth will be going home with their own heifer. -

Excited to see what this heifer goes on to do for a young Hereford enthusiast. The 11K daughters, as a group, sure look like they are going to make great females. Dam is a tank of a 5H daughter with both grand dams being our top two money producing cows.
