According to Terry Brown, FBC Branson event coordinator, “With so many events cancelled or postponed, we wanted to keep this event going, and of course it will be ‘COVID safe’.”

More than 20 area businesses and individuals have donated to provide 1,400 backpacks and school supplies that will be given away at the Bash. Families will stay in their cars, as staff handout the free items. Children must be present to get the free backpacks.

In addition, popsicles, music, a motorcycle and BMX stunt show, treats, and drinking cups stuffed with bubble gum will be provided, also free of charge while supplies last.

Backpacks and school supplies were all donated by individuals, businesses and organizations in Taney County. This year’s sponsors for the Back to

Hollister boutique offers more than just clothing

By K.D. Michaels Staff Writer A new boutique has recently opened in Hollister, however, it’s not your average clothing store.

“Everything in here is free”, said Linda Anthony, who, along with her daughter, Tonya, helps operate Answers to Prayers Boutique and Outreach.

The well-appropriated store provides clothing, food and hygiene items to those in need, free of charge. The non-profit outreach is sponsored by Billye Brim Ministries and Prayer Mountain of the Ozarks, and is designed to help the less fortunate in the Hollister and Branson communities.

The boutique opened in January in a small shop along Hollister’s Turkey Creek, and moved it it’s current, larger home in June. Since opening, Answers to Prayers has aided approximately 150 to 200 people per month, according to Anthony.

“When people come in, they sign in. We like for them to bring their children or other family members in, as well,” Anthony explained. “We offer them two clothing items a month. We also offer them food, and we provide resources. We research what is available for people who need help, and direct them to places like CAM. where they can get additional assistance.”

Anthony added that working with this special group of clients has been

a humbling experience. “When people come in, some don’t even have a can opener, or a plate. They are going day to day without enough food to eat.

And, a lot of the people who come in looking for clothes are just trying to find something to wear so they can get a job. We do anything we can to help people,.” said Anthony. “My daughter and I don’t have lot, but doing this makes us realize that we’re so much better off than many people.”

In addition to the boutique, Answers to Prayers offers a church service, located just down from the store’s First Street location. Also sponsored by Prayer Mountain of the Ozarks, God’s Club meets each Sunday at 2 pm, and provides nourishment for the spirit as well as the body, according to Anthony.

“We invite people we’ve helped in the store with food or clothing.

We try to feed them and then we feed them the Word,” Anthony noted. “Its a place for people who want to go to church, but maybe don’t feel like they belong.”

“So many people just feel like no one cares about them,” added Tonya Anthony. “My mom and I want to really reach people. We don’t just give them clothes and food, but we try to get to the heart, and meet all of their needs.”

Answers to Prayers is located at 144 First Street in Hollister. The outreach is always willing to take donations of good, used clothing for both adults and children, as well as new toiletries and non-perishable food items.

I drive from Ozark to Branson almost daily and the beauty of the landscape is amazing.

Our family used to spend every

weekend on Table Rock Lake skiing, sighting seeing and ending the day at a local restaurant.

I would come visit them at least once a year and bring up fresh shrimp and crawfish then we would head to Table Rock Lake to have a downhome Louisiana seafood boil.

One of the things I really love about Branson is the hills because where I’m from it’s flat everywhere. The biggest draw for me was Table Rock Lake.

I decided to move here almost three years ago to be closer to my family which has been a blessing from God. I now live on TRL and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Student turned her ruined summer plans into a way to help isolating seniors connect with their doctors

Good News Network A cancelled internship turned into a big opportunity for one young woman to help her whole state.

Just a few months ago, the Emory University student, like the rest of us, was gearing up for the summer when COVID-19 ruined her plans.

“After receiving countless emails about canceled internships, I had just about concluded that I would be spending my summer twiddling my thumbs,” said Lia Rubel from her home in Barre, Vermont, a blue-collar town of about 10,000.

That’s when she got a call from a friend about a new initiative organized by some Yale University students who saw a great need—a need that escalated to urgent in the era of coronavirus. People were still in need of medical care but couldn’t leave their homes for fear of spreading or contracting the virus, especially seniors, who are more vulnerable.

That’s why, in March, Telehealth Access for Seniors was born: to get communications tech-

nology, such as a smartphone or tablet computer, to elderly patients who lack and very much need it.

“It’s more than just a device.

It’s a vital connectivity tool and it could save someone’s life,” says Rubel, 18, who joined the initiative in March as the lead for Vermont. “It just hurt my heart that they don’t have that privilege and they can’t connect to friends and families. They can’t even connect to their doctors.”

Born in the 1960s as part of NASA’s mission to put men on the moon (they might need medical care up there too), telehealth options have experienced a renaissance in the era of high-speed connectivity and ubiquitous devices with screens. In 2002, a former NASA surgeon and engineer founded Teledoc, which became the first nationwide telehealth company in 2005; in 2015, the first medical facility totally dedicated to telehealth opened in Chesterfield, Missouri, Mercy Virtual.

But many people don’t have access to these services for lack of technology, and the problem is SEE SENIORS, PAGE 10

Old toy horse left in trash becomes local celebrity Good News Network.

An old stuffed toy horse left out on the pavement for trash pick-up went on to a life of celebrity, after residents of a small village in Norfolk, England adopted him as their face-mask-wearing mascot.

It all started about a week ago when a gentleman in Hethersett who had recently lost his wife, was cleaning out his house and the horse was one of the things he was throwing away.

It is believed that some children picked him up and played with him, leaving him on a grassy knoll—the rest of the story is filled with the kind of whimsy we all need in this time of restricted community.

At first, a lady posted on a local Facebook page asking if anybody had lost him, and obviously a lot of comments with horse-y puns ensued.

“The next thing we knew, he got put outside someone’s door, and she took him in and named him Derek Trotter,” said resident Kim Rout—a reference to the character from an 80s TV sitcom Only Fools and Horses.

Derek has since trotted from

home to home, with villagers keeping track of his whereabouts on a Facebook group that Kim set up called Derek Trotter the Globetrotting Pony.

The Facebook group, which has gained nearly 400 followers, has been a hilarious addition to people’s day.

“A couple of days later, there was Rodney left at a bus stop, waiting for a bus.”

People have been sharing photos of him appearing on their doorsteps, or ‘grazing’ on grass and flowers in their gardens.

Derek has been taken out on ‘walks’ with some residents, and he has even gained a horsey friend, with the mysterious emergence of a smaller toy horse, which has been named Rodney, and now travels around beside Derek.

Kim, who has a 15-year-old son, said, “It feels like it’s come at just the right time, what with everyone having been in lockdown.

“It’s really brightened up the village. People have told me that they sit and wait for posts on the Facebook page, to see

where the boys have been and what they’ve been up to.

“They’ll spend the night with somebody, and then get passed on further down the road, or to some-

body in the Facebook group.”

Derek and Rodney have also been on the occasional excursion out of the village.

This week, Kim drove them

Teen abandoned at birth now raises money to give senior dogs a forever home Good News Network.

Abandoned in a basket on a college campus in India as an infant, Meena Kumar knows what it’s like to need a little love. That’s why she’s drawn to the pups that are most often overlooked—senior dogs living out their golden years in animal shelters.

Snuggling with four-legged seniors became her passion, and that dedication is helping to support second-chances for dozens of

dogs, even after being told she was too young to volunteer.

“More people should adopt senior dogs,” she told CNN. “They give you the same unconditional love as any other dog.”

The 14-year-old’s love for canines began when she was no taller than a Schnauzer.

Kim said she hopes the two horses will end up being passed further afield than Hethersett once they have “exhausted” their adventures.

“We’d like to see how far their new celebrity status can reach.”

worse in Vermont, where about 19 percent of the population is over 65 (versus 15 percent for the rest of the US) and where 10 percent of residents don’t have access to broadband but they do have access to cellular service.

Since March, Telehealth Access for Seniors has expanded to over 50 volunteers in 26 states and they’ve raised an estimated $38,000 and donated 825 devices, Rubel says. In Vermont alone, Rubel has helped collect about 50 devices and $800.

“If they’re still self-quarantining, it’s really important for mental health,” says Rubel. “We include with the devices some suggestions to download wellness apps. And

they [patients] use the devices to FaceTime family to stay connected.”

Just providing a way for an elderly person to have a “face-toface” conversation with a loved one in an era of social distancing can be lifesaving. Feeling lonely leads to a 26 percent increase in mortality rate, according to a recent meta-study of 3.4 million people.

Telehealth Access for Seniors offers a free remote phone and email tech support team so that help is always available. The organization also provides instructions on how to set up devices.

“The pandemic has opened our eyes to how important it is to have digital tools and the importance of equipping our seniors with these devices,” says Rubel.

Why Americans think it’s a good idea to remember to smile Good News Network A smile can go a long way toward cheering people up— especially these days when it’s more important than ever to

find solace.

A new survey of 2,000 Americans found that half of respondents believe it has been important during the pandemic to

find things to smile about in order to ‘stay positive’. And, they say that they can easily get that lift from others.

56 percent said seeing some-

one else look happy improves their mood—and in recent months 31 percent have made more of an effort to smile at others.

The survey by OnePoll for Ciaté London found U.S. adults believe they are smiling about 11 times every day, amounting to almost a quarter million times over the course of an average lifetime.

52 percent cite ‘hearing good news ’ as being something that most easily triggers them to beam. 40 percent said a top smile-generator is hearing a joke, and 41 percent pointed to being with family.

That’s how Mara Soriano feels about a very special teddy bear that she tragically lost in her recent move to a new apartment.

The Build-A-Bear plush toy didn’t cost a lot, but it contained a recording of her late mother’s voice telling her that she loved her and was proud of her. The

bear, called “Mama Bear,” was in a backpack that contained electronics like an iPad and a Nintendo Switch. When the bag was stolen last week during the move, the 28-year-old, was heartbroken—not for the gadgets, but for Mama Bear.

So she posted online about the item lost in Vancouver, Canada, and the story behind it, which caught one viewer’s attention in a big way.

year-old, she lovingly spent hours caring for newborn pups in her family’s apartment.

“My parents were worried about how to keep me amused in a small place,” she told TODAY. “Thankfully, a dog had laid a litter of puppies, and I used to spend hours every day watching and playing with them.”

Kumar’s doggie dedication continued when she was brought to San Jose, California, where she insisted the family make regular visits to the Humane Society.

When she was eight, they adopted Bambie, a mixed-breed pooch she spent hours training to do tricks.

Two years ago, as she was walking Bambie, she met a neighbor who had adopted through Muttville Senior Dog Rescue.

She told Kumar about the nonprofit’s cage-free rescue operation that gives senior dogs a “second chance at life.” The organization rescues about 1,000 dogs per year and runs mostly through the help of volunteers.

“I know what it feels like to be left behind,” Kumar thought.

“The dogs may be senior and old, but they’re so friendly and cute.

They’re the most gentle and loyal creatures.”

She enjoyed visiting the aging dogs at the rescue, but because she was 12 at the time, Kumar was five years too young to volunteer.

The zealous girl wouldn’t let ageist rules stop her. She decided to raise money for them, instead, because, “You’re never to young to start a business,” she said with a smile.

She launched a petsitting business called Pet Fairy Services— and it took off. With rates of $35 per day, Kumar raised an impressive $7,000 in two years—and she donated it all to Muttville.

Even though the coronavirus pandemic has slowed things down for many nonprofits, the

popularity of fostering and adopting dogs has skyrocketed.

“It feels great to know that I’ve saved many dogs’ lives and given them another chance to enjoy life for their last years of living,” she told TODAY. “I feel like all dogs should get a forever home just like I did.”

Luckily, the internet did its thing and Mara’s search soon went viral. Meanwhile, Mara was out searching. She put up posters, dug through dumpsters,

Actor Ryan Reynolds, a native of British Columbia, then posted a plea for its safe return. “I think we all need this bear to come

home,” he wrote. Along with the message, he also offered a huge incentive for the thief—a $5,000 reward, “no questions asked.”

Then on Tuesday night, Mara’s special bear came home. “I’m not gonna lie I kind of buckled.

As soon as I saw (him) pull her out of the bag… I just started sobbing and I grabbed her out of his hands and I couldn’t let her go.” she told CTV. It’s a bit of a modern day miracle that would never have happened without the wonders of social media. Mara said she got an email from a good Samaritan who told her they had the bear.

Though she was skeptical, she set up a safe meeting space with a member of the media also present. Luckily, it wasn’t a scam— two unnamed people brought her the bear, safe and sound.

Mara is getting married next summer and the bear is going to have a special seat at the

bransonglobe.com ceremony—the one her mother would’ve sat in. For now, she’s keeping “Mama Bear” close and sending thanks to those who helped with the happy reunion.

She tweeted an excited message of gratitude to Ryan Reynolds, who is also an entrepreneur, referencing his gin company.

“BREAK OUT THE @AviationGin, @VancityReynolds!

MAMA BEAR IS HOME!” she wrote. Ryan seemed almost as happy.

After having wired the money to the person who returned the bear, he took to Twitter to share the news with his followers, writing, “In happier news… thank you everyone who searched high and low. To the person who took the bear, thanks for keeping it safe. Vancouver is awesome.”

Vancouver certainly is—but this story just might show that humanity totally is, too.

bransonglobe.com ‘Chief mouser’ Palmerston retires as UK’s top diplomatic cat LONDON (AP) — Time spent in lockdown was just superb for Palmerston, the chief mouser at the U.K. Foreign Office.

It was so good, in fact, that the cat has decided to leave sorting out international affairs to the human diplomats and retire to the countryside after four long, hard years on the job.

Palmerston made it official in a letter sent in his name to Simon McDonald, the office’s permanent

under-secretary, which explained that he wanted more time “away from the limelight.”

“I have found life away from the front line relaxed, quieter, and easier,” a letter signed with two paw prints said. It was posted on Twitter.

Palmerston, who is named after the longest-serving British Foreign Secretary, Lord Palmerston, arrived in April 2016 as a rescue cat. He had plenty of company, though sometimes less than smooth diplomatic relations with Larry, cat-in-resi-

The two were sometimes seen fighting in the street outside the British prime minister’s home.

“I have been delighted to meet representatives from all over the world, and I hope I have done you proud in putting the U.K.’s best foot or paw forward in such interaction,” the letter said.

His colleagues said he would be missed.
