Branson mourns the loss of member of the entertainment community

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer Branson mourns the loss of a longtime entertainer and one of the town’s top promoters.

James Marvell passed away last week following a brief battle with cancer.

Marvell enjoyed fame early in life with the 1960s pop group, Mercy. With Marvell as one of the group’s vocalists, Mercy hit the number two spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts, just below the Beatles, with their hit “Love Can Make You Happy” in April of 1969.

The 1970s saw Marvell changing genres, when he joined forces

with Buddy Good, as half of the trend-setting duo The Country Cavaleers. Together, Marvell and Good made up a long-haired group with a “Pro-Jesus, Anti-Drug Movement.” The duo recorded with a number of labels, made several television appearances, and toured with such country stars as the Wilburns and Loretta Lynn.

Marvell came to Branson in 1990, invited by Willie Nelson and his friends Frank and Jeanie Oakley to sell his hand-crafted turquoise jewelry in the lobby of Nelson’s theater. Before long, Marvell found an avenue to help promote SEE MARVELL, PAGE 31

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer An upcoming benefit is scheduled to help restore a Forsyth restaurant.

Shirley’s Kitchen in Forsyth was the site of a fire on February 28. Owned by Rachel and Lonnie Brown in December, the restaurant was a complete loss due to smoke damage.

“Insurance is not going to pay for any of the contents of the building,” Rachel explained.

“We have had many people offer donations, but my husband and I have always been givers to our community. We decided that doing a benefit would give us the chance to give the com-

munity something in return for donations, in addition to helping us pay to rebuild.”

Shirley’s Kitchen, named after Rachel’s late mother, is in the former Longhorn eatery location.

“It had been a part of the community for a long time,” Rachel explained. “It has been closed for some years, and we wanted to carry on the restaurant’s legacy. My husband owned B&C Remodeling in Forsyth for 25 years. I am an RN but needed a break from nursing, due to the last couple of years. He serves at the restaurant and I cook, so we are both very active mem-

The benefit to help re-open Shirley’s Kitchen is set for Saturday, April 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Shadow Rock Park in Forsyth.

The event will include an Easter egg hunt at 4:30 pm, followed by an auction at 6. Items to be auctioned off include a shotgun, motorcycle, pistol, gift baskets and much more. Those in attendance will also enjoy a bounce house, delicious food, baked goods and hand-crafted items for sale, as well as a raffle.

Donations for Shirley’s Kitchen will be accepted.

First Walking for Recovery event slated for April 23

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer The Brook Wellness Center is hosting their first annual Walking for Recovery event on April 23.

Walking for Recovery will take place at the Port of Kimberling Marina and Resort. Open registration begins at 8 a.m., and the event starts at 9 a.m. The day’s events also include entertainment, guest speakers,

raffles, giveaways, food and fun.

Walkers are invited to wear their own “rockin’ socks” or a pair of “rockin’ socks” will be provided on the day of the event. Registration is $30 and can be done online at www. thebrookwellnesscenter.org or onsite the day of the event for $35.

Scholarship Fund, providing access to treatment and counseling to children, adolescents and adults.

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary will be holding a fundraiser to raise needed money to support local Veterans and their families.

This event, known as a “Bowling Fun-Raiser” is set for June 26.

“We’ll have three games of 9-pin,” said the DAV Auxiliary’s Pat Eilert. “That means, if you get nine pins down, you get a strike!”

The fun-filled event will be

held at Woodland Lanes, located at 2126 East Highway 76 in Branson. Money raised will be used to provide Christmas stockings and bingo for the Veterans at Mount Vernon’s Veterans’ Home, as well as providing winter help for veterans and their families locally, in Taney and Stone counties.

Cost to participate is $18 per person, which includes three games and shoe rental for the

afternoon. The event gets underway at 2 p.m. on June 26.

“Our local Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 68 and Unit 68 Auxiliary (DAVA) have been offering support to local veterans and their families in our area for over ten years,” Eilert explained. “Please join us for a “Fun-Raiser” afternoon. There will be door prizes, game prizes and raffles for themed baskets and more!”

By CINDY THOMAS, Staff Writer A new show at the Yakov Theater, 470 St. Highway 248 in Branson, combines live musicians with holographic technology to present rock and roll legends Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison together on tour for the first time! Co-produced by Icon Events and Base Entertainment, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Dream Tour will open April 14 and run through the end of September for a season of 100 shows.

These two iconic performers defined the genre of rock and roll from writing to recording to standard band configuration. Their influence can be seen in other performers from Elvis Presley to the Beatles and continues to impact musicians today. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Dream Tour features remastered audio from both legends with a live band and

singers as backup for cutting-edge holographic performances. The show, a tribute to the legacy of both musicians, is fully approved by the families of Orbison, who passed away in 1988, and Holly, whose untimely death with several other musicians in a plane crash shocked the nation in 1959. The show is sure to transport audience members back in time for an unforgettable evening, creating a bond for younger attendees with music their parents and grandparents enjoyed that has stood the test of time.

After a sold-out world tour covering much of the U.S., U.K., and several European countries, Icon Events/Icon Entertainment president Rui Da Silva said it was an easy decision to bring the show to a Branson venue for 2022. “Branson is the live music capital, with great

local artists, musicians, and operations people,” said Da Silva, who will be in Branson often during the show’s run.

Music director David Brooks has assembled a band of award-winning local musicians for the show’s Branson residency. All have studied legendary performances of Holly and Orbison, and some have played in other tribute cover bands, so they are well-versed in accurate portrayal. Barb Milhem, director of operations, said the interaction between the live band and the holographic images is almost uncanny in its excellence. “This takes cover shows to the next level,” she said. “Kids are so tech-savvy now, they will gravitate toward this.”

“There was a total of 22 employers,” explained Mark Hinterleiter, Veterans Employment Specialist for the Missouri Job Center. “They had a total of 1,300 job opportunities, combined. There were also four different types of resources to help assist people within Taney and Stone counties.”

Each employer offered applications and conducted interviews,

and at least one employer hired staff on-the-spot.

Hinterleiter noted that turnout was light, possibly due to the date change.

“I believe that the turnout could have been better on the initial date, but due to weather it had to be changed,” said Hinterleiter.

Releasing 1 million barrels a day sounds like a lot, but is it? In 2021 the U.S. used 19,800,000 barrels of oil a day, and our U.S. oil fields pump out 18,900,000 barrels of oil a day according to JPMorgan. A million barrels extra a day would only amount to a 5% increase in oil added to our markets.

This million-barrel release might look good, but I don’t think it does much to help gas prices. I say that because the U.S. released 50 million barrels of oil from the reserve last November, and then another 30 million barrels this month, and

neither dramatically lowered gas prices.

Many in the president’s party face a difficult re-election in Congress this November. He’s getting pressured to do something because the political polls show that high gas prices are concerning to voters. The problem is there aren’t a lot of fixes.

Gas prices are killing our budgets right now. The national average for unleaded gas is $4.22 a gallon according to AAA. It’s better here in the Midwest, Missouri, Kansas, and Arkansas has an average of $3.77-3.80 a gallon according to AAA. On March 31, President Biden announced the release of up to 1 million barrels of oil a day every day for six months from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve to help fix the high gas prices. That would leave our Strategic Petroleum Reserve at 388 million barrels, the lowest level since 1984, according to the Wall

Oh no, the physical pain was probably the least of his suffering.

It’s easy to feel isolated because of rejection, failures, hangups, or shameful desires and actions, and to wonder how you could ever be close to a holy God. But no one is as understanding of your pain as He is because he’s the only one who has really been there. And because He was the only one who never sinned, He is also the only one who

can give you true freedom.

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin. Reflections: The right path

W

eekend Bible reading landed me in Proverbs.

Solomon is thought to be the primary author of this collection of pithy sayings and cautionary advice, and the Bible recounts stories of his extraordinary, divinely-inspired wisdom, but some Proverbs are likely things he learned the hard way.

Proverbs 2 stresses the importance of wisdom, also referred to as “discernment,” “discretion,” and “knowledge of God.” Verses 13–20 use imagery of a path, leading to the house of a prostitute. Although it may be a sad commentary on employment options available to women in that culture, such imagery is not intended to denigrate women. Rather, it reflects choices that must be made by all of us.

Just as temporary escape to a prostitute resulted in violating God’s commandments, any initial bad choice usually leads to another one.

Arriving at the prostitute’s place of business didn’t happen instantaneously; it was the culmination of choosing “the way of evil;” listening

to the person who “speaks perverse things;” and leaving “the paths of righteousness” instead of following God along those paths (Psalm 23).

That series of wrong choices ends with the opposite of wisdom—foolishness and eventual ruin.

We all face choices daily. Many don’t look all that bad at first— maybe extra time on unproductive social media instead of Bible reading and prayer, but hey, we need to keep up with the news, right? Choosing music or movies that glorify unholy behavior—we don’t want to be culturally illiterate or closed-minded, right? That extra drink at the club, not sure we should drive home, much safer to stay over with our date, right?

Churches preaching feel-good Jesus instead of calling sin what it is—we can’t be judgmental or folks won’t come, right? You get the idea. People don’t usually land in drug rehab or court because they planned to.

In contrast to the mess in chapter 2, Proverbs 3 details practical and spiritual advantages of choosing wisdom and the steps to gaining it.

Solomon quotes God’s commands from Deuteronomy to write God’s law on our hearts, something that won’t happen without intentional time spent in prayer and Bible study. Verses 5–6 reassure us that as we trust God, don’t lean on our human understanding, and acknowledge his supremacy in our

lives, he will direct our paths. Further admonitions include honoring God with our possessions and accepting his correction, resulting in provision for our need. Verse 24 promises sleep without anxiety; v.25 reassures us of God’s loving presence even in troubled times.

God’s creative power is connected to his wisdom. Since we are made in his image, seeking his wisdom inspires creativity as well, evidenced by the many classic works of art, music and literature by devout followers of God. With so many benefits, it’s worth considering long-term consequences of choices, spending time in prayer and seeking godly counsel for every decision.

ges ago, far longer ago than I like to admit at this point, I was obsessed with DuckTales.

Granted, I was nine years old.

But I was absolutely obsessed. I had some DuckTales figures and

some DuckTales comics, yes, but at 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, if I didn’t get to watch each and every episode of DuckTales on FOX-43, well, my life as I imagined it was over.

Mind you, this was not my mom’s first rodeo. She’d already endured my obsessions with Winnie the Pooh, the Smurfs, Scooby Doo, Star Wars and Indiana Jones. The naval history of World War II, the Disney theme parks, and Star Trek were yet on the horizon. It was probably good she didn’t know about those yet.

But one day, after a particularly momentous meltdown because

by Cardinals baseball, my mom turned to me, dishtowel in hand, sighed, and said, “You know, you can spend your life watching what other people make. Or you can make something of your own.”

It was a prescient moment. I’m sure it didn’t show at the time.

But the words slowly worked their way into my mind and the wheels began to turn. Over the decades, the meaningful words of a frustrated parent took on profound meaning.

“Why should I just be a consumer?” I began to ask myself.

“What could I create if I put my

mind to it?” “And why not me?”

That’s how StateoftheOzarks began. That’s how Writers Artists Night began, along with the invitation to encourage others to create as well (for we often seek permission to make the things of which we dream). That’s how StateoftheOzarks Fest began. That’s how First Friday Art Walk came about. Heck, that’s even how the Hollister Farmers Market got going back in May of 2020, a year in which nobody believed anything good could be created.

But we did. And we do. And I invite you to join in as well. We are still taking submissions for

t is important for me to be honest with my constituents.

I want to give as much clarity as to how the legislative process works as possible. Sometimes, there are opportunities in which bills can pass on their own. However, when the end of session is so close, it is necessary to combine bills and add amendments to bills that are currently on the floor. Two of my bills have been added to existing bills. This is why the bill numbers of my legislation may change as the process moves

forward. All of my hard work, the language, and the intent is still in the bills, but they might have a different bill number.

As I mentioned before, House Bill 2810 not only passed the committee that it was assigned to, but was improved in a collaborative manner with many members of the committee. We had the opportunity to amend all the language of HB 2810 on to House Bill 2012 which prohibits the use of or the donation of

fetal tissue from an abortion for any purpose, except to diagnose anomalies, paternity, or for any other law enforcement purposes. Train Up a Child: Patience – a characteristic of love

f asked, “Do you love your children?” most parents without hesitation would reply, “Yes, I love my children!” Most parents probably do think that they love their children. However, when we examine the true definition of love, we might find ourselves falling short in the matter of patience.

If we examine definitions of love, we find that the 13th chapter

of 1 Corinthians in the Bible lists the qualities present when there is love. One of those qualities listed is patience.

Do we have patience with our children? In the hurry and scurry of everyday living, we can easily expect too much too soon from those around us. It is not easy to wait for children to develop skills and make decisions at their own pace. We sometimes forget that we cannot force a flower to bloom.

With plants, we water, nourish and prune, but the growth comes from within the plant. So it is with children. We nourish, and prune (discipline) and provide experiences and advice, but we cannot force the child to grow. That growth comes from within the child.

Unfortunately, some parents

have a fixed image in mind of what they want the child to be when s/he grows up. We have all heard of the football player who wants a son to be a football star, etc. In such a situation, the parent may be very impatient and take out his own disappointment on the child. We need to realize that certain traits are inherent in children at birth. Again, using gardening as an example, we cannot change a carrot to a radish; we can only try to develop a better carrot or radish. With children, we need to cultivate those good tendencies or skills that came with them at birth. We waste time and cause much frustration when we try to force children to be something other than what they are capable of. We need to be patient as we

help them develop into what their Creator designed them for.

It is important in the matter of discipline to be able to discern the difference between a mistake and intentional belligerence. We would be naïve to think that children are born with only good intentions.

Intentional belligerence requires immediate discipline. Mistakes of a child, on the other hand, require our patience and teaching. Probably every child needs admonition at one time or another. When our children are intentionally naughty, even though we must discipline them, we need to be patient in understanding that they are no different from other kids in that respect.

We should never make a child feel that there is no hope for improvement. I’ve known some parents

who seem to really just grind their children down until the child feels there is no hope. Our patience with them gives hope. Without hope, children may either give up or become rebellious.

We can’t expect children to be as accomplished as we are. We have several years of learning ahead of them. When they seem awkward and break things, it may be because they are growing longer arms and legs and haven’t learned to adjust to the extra size yet. When they don’t make the right decisions, it may be because they haven’t acquired all the facts and understanding they need to make those decisions.

Patience is more than a virtue.

Patience is an indication of real love.

First responders are heroes without capes. They are assigned to dangerous or traumatic situations and their training and skills often make their performance the difference in life or death for everyday citizens in our country. It takes a certain mentality to be a hero, to sacrifice yourself so others may benefit, so we must stand with them. House Bill 1640 has been added to House Bill 2054.

156. Longtime friends Danny and Kathy Reynolds visited me in the Capitol. It was great to see them again!

Also, I enjoyed the visit of some of the members of the Civil Air Patrol in the Emergency Cadet Programs Aerospace Education program. The use of these qualified CAP cadets is encouraged as much as possible on appropriate missions. Cadets should be trained in the various functions of mission operations and support as permitted. Cadets qualify no differently than adult members in emergency services qualifications and should be properly utilized. I thank them for their hard work.

Retired Teachers to meet April 12

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer The Tri Lakes Retired Teachers and Public School Personnel will learn about alternative medicine during their upcoming April meeting.

The program will be presented by Dr. Brian Wertz with Health Centers of the Ozarks, speaking on the topic of CBD oil, including its uses and side effects. CBD or cannabidiol is a natural remedy for pain and anxiety.

Following Dr. Wertz’s presentation the meeting will be opened up to questions from the members.

During a recent meeting the Retired Teachers heard from Dr. Jeff Mingus, Forsyth School Superintendent. Dr. Mingus discussed the benefits the district has realized in moving to a four-day week. Dr. Mingus said the response from parents, students and staff has been “phenomenal.”

“The kids and teachers both seem to be happier,” noted Mingus. “Annual instruction time has been reduced by only 17 hours. The district was having difficulty getting applicants for teaching positions, and with a four-day week, we have been able to attract experienced people from other districts. It definitely has had a positive impact on the culture

of our schools.”

Dr. Mingus also shared information regarding the district’s response to Covid and AMI days.

This month’s meeting of the TriLakes Retired Teachers and Public School Personnel will be held on Tuesday, April 12 at 8:30 a.m., with the program featuring Dr. Wertz beginning at 8:45. The organization generally meets on the second Tuesday of each month, with meetings beginning at 9 a.m. The earlier starting time for the April meeting is to accommodate the guest speaker.

The April meeting will be held at the group’s traditional location—Taneyhills Library, 200 South 4th Street, downtown Branson. The organization’s May and August meetings will be held at alternate locations.

The Tri-Lakes Retired Teachers and Public School Personnel is the local unit of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association.

All retired educators and school personnel are invited to attend.

Counseling and recovery assistance are also available for parents who have chosen abortion in the past and have never been able to talk or find closure about the child they lost.

The Great Hollister Easter Egg Hunt to be held April 16 Submitted to Branson Globe The 36th annual Great Hollister Easter Egg Hunt hosted by the Hollister Area Chamber of Commerce will be held on Saturday, April 16, at the Hollister High School football stadium. Gates will open at 12:00 p.m. with the first hunt beginning at 1 p.m.

Tiffany Stevens, chair of the event, explained that this year’s event would have the return of the scavenger hunt and Ronzo, which the kids loved last year. There will be several other children’s activities available for the children to participate in while they are at the event.

Concessions will be available for purchase for a minimal price.

There will also be a coloring contest broken down into the same age groups as the egg hunt with prizes for the best entries. The bunny picture to be colored will be located on the back of the flyers handed out at Hollister schools and throughout the community. Flyers will also be available daily at the Hollister Chamber office located at 2527 S. Business 65 in Hollister.

The Easter Bunny will make a grand entrance on a fire truck at 12:30 p.m., courtesy of the Western Taney County Fire Protection District. Branson High School hires new men’s head basketball coach

Branson High School has hired a new men’s head basketball coach for the 2022-2023 school year. Pete McBride will replace Mike Linehan who resigned the position in March.

McBride has served in the Eminence School District for 26 years

Pete McBride (Special to Branson Globe) as a teacher, coach and administrator. His basketball coaching career at Eminence secured 399 career wins and two state championships in 2013 and 2018. McBride was named the Missouri Basketball Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2018 and was named the National Federation Midwest Coach of the Year in 2018. He won ten district championships, eight conference titles, and was named Coach of the Year in his conference eight times. In 2020, McBride was inducted into the Missouri Basketball Coaches

Association Hall of Fame.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Missouri State University, a master’s degree in Administration from William Woods University, and a specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University. McBride will assume the role of Assistant Athletic Director and physical education instructor at BHS. “I am looking forward to continuing my teaching and coaching career in the Branson School District,” says McBride.

“Branson has a strong reputation as an outstanding school district with strong leadership.

I’m looking forward to leading the men’s basketball program into the future.”

Williams inducted into the Hollister Hall of Fame

Coach Bob Williams became the fifth person to be inducted into the Hollister Hall of Fame at a recent home baseball game against Ava. Williams, who retired in 2020, gave 25 years of service and dedication to the Hollister R-V School District. Beginning his career as an elementary school music teacher and the director of the Hollister Elementary Honor Choir, Williams soon found a passion for coaching and would spend 23 years coaching for the Hollister Tigers.

He served as the Hollister Middle School Baseball Head Coach for 16 years, assistant football coach for six years, and assistant softball coach for two years. During his tenure at Hollister, Williams also taught PE and science at Hollister Middle School and taught at the Hollister STAR School.

Dr. Brian Wilson, Superintendent of Hollister Schools shares that while Coach Williams wore many different hats during his 25 years with Hollister, his character is what sets him apart. “Most importantly, Bob Williams was always a great role model for our students and a steady influence for the Hollister Tigers coaching staff.”

What’s that smell...Part 2

Roasted marshmallows, fish, campfires, and metallic madein-China gadgets. What do these all have in common? They are the various ways people describe the smell of burning electrical.

Several months ago, I wrote an article about paying attention to smells in relation to your electrical system. I am going to follow up on that topic again today to stress the importance of acting quickly when you smell something burning,

We recently had a customer who said that he kept noticing a burnt marshmallow smell every time his furnace kicked on.

When we got there to investigate, we found that the breakers for the furnace were melted, burnt and cracked, and they literally fell out of the panel when we removed the cover. A simple loose connection between the breakers and the panel had caused electricity to arc every time the furnace turned on. This electrical arc melted away a little more of the breaker each time it occurred (see picture above). An ‘arc’ is an electrical explosion that occurs when the current jumps between one conductive surface and another. The temperature of an arc can reach or

Fuel up: New restaurant offers fantastic menu choices

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer Branson is home to a new dining venue. Located next to the Track Family Fun Park, in the former location of Pizza World, Fuel opened its doors on March 15.

“Fuel is a one-of-a-kind dining concept in Branson. We call it a ‘Fresh American Grill.’ which means we’re focused on fresh, delicious, classic American food, in a quick-service and casual envi-

ronment,” explained Julie Wilson, Vice President of Five Star Parks and Attractions. “This is food that’s going to add to the feelings of fun and happiness you get as you’re enjoying a visit to The Track Family Fun Park. We’re a family-friendly place where parents and kids all have plenty of menu choices, but we’ll also be serving cold beer on tap and specialty cocktails. In short, this isn’t something you’re going to find at other family entertainment centers, in Branson or anywhere else. Also, you don’t have to be a guest at The Track to enjoy a meal at Fuel. Anyone who’d like to dine here is most welcome, though we have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of people may come for Fuel and end up in a go-kart

or at the arcade before they leave!”

Fuel is owned by The Track Family Fun Park. Since last summer, that popular Branson entity has been operated

by Five Star Parks and Attractions.

Said Wilson, “This is one of the many positive changes you’re going to see as a result of that partnership.

Our general manager is Matthew Stoll, who has worked in the world of food and beverage since his midteens. He was most recently at Pizza World, Fuel’s predecessor here at the park, and before that, worked as the general manager of Waxy O’Shea’s Irish Pub, the Outback Pub, and the Paddlewheel here in Branson. Our food and beverage director is Erin Price, who also worked for Pizza World, and before that spent ten years at Reeds Spring Pizza Company.”

Fuel takes pride in a fantastic menu, offering something for every taste.

“We have terrific starters that are perfect for sharing—from sliders to Bavarian pretzels to our loaded tater kegs, which have to be seen to be believed. (Hint: we’re talking about tater tots paired with bacon!),” said Wilson.

“We also serve juicy burgers, a really fun take on entree nachos, plus sandwiches, wings and a spin on mac and

cheese that people just love. For those who are looking for something a little lighter, we also have terrific entree salads, and there’s plenty that the kids will like, too. And, it should go without saying that dessert is amazing!”

Fuel is located on the property of The Track Family Fun Parks’ Track Four, at 3405 West Highway 76, next to the Branson Ferris Wheel.

Fuel is open daily from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., with expanded hours planned for the summer months.

Reader’s Corner: Creation adventure series helps tweens defend faith

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer For whatever reason, kids are often fascinated by dinosaurs. And at some point, questions arise as to when and how dinosaurs became extinct, with most sources citing millions of years. Dinosaurs coexisting with people is usually not considered a possibility; even “Jurassic Park” was “sci-fi,” using genetic engineering as the ticket.

Unless, of course, you believe in literal 6-day creation as described in the book of Genesis in the Bible. A straightforward reading of the Bible from that viewpoint says dinosaurs perished in the flood, just like all other life except that on the ark. A pair of dinosaurs would have survived, made more dinosaurs, adapted to have different characteristics, and eventually perished for other reasons. Or—are some still around?

Ozark, Missouri, author Ben Russell grew up with a typical “evolution plus God” experience blending textbooks and Sunday school.

He hadn’t given much thought to the subject when he and his wife decided to homeschool their children, until the family attended a biblical creation seminar hosted by a Springfield church. There they learned that the dinosaurs-and-people idea isn’t as far-fetched as evolutionary theorists teach. (Where, for example, did legends about dragons and sea monsters come from?) However, it can be awkward when kids learn the biblical account at home or church and then encounter school or other settings where particles-to-people evolution is taught as fact rather than theory.

Impressed by the speaker’s presentation, the Russells realized biblical 6-day creation made sense and answered many questions evolution could not. As their family grew, though, they noticed that places like theme parks and museums almost exclusively communicated millionsof-years evolution. And enjoyable creation-based fiction for tweens/ teens was nearly non-existent.

Russell, already a writer, thought, “Why doesn’t someone do something

about that?” And in response, he felt God was saying, “Why not you?”

That inspired Creation Tales. The “Noah Drake and the Dragon” series chronicles the adventures of a modern-day boy who discovers a living dinosaur while on family vacation.

The series involves a homeschool family, but Russell assures potential readers the books aren’t exclusively written for that audience. As the Drake family and those who oppose them in the stories discuss their beliefs, all young readers will be inspired to think for themselves and to discuss the origins topic confidently with friends.

The Drake family are likely relat-

able for other families as they must decide how to respond graciously to someone trying to harm them.

Older siblings learn to assist younger ones, a familiar scene to homeschoolers as Mom may be teaching a middle-schooler math while a high-schooler coaches a beginning reader, but also any other busy family whose teens help younger siblings with homework or chauffeur them to soccer practice.

Branson Chorale to present ‘Return to Me’ Good Friday service

By K.D. MICHAELS, Staff Writer The Branson Chorale presents “Return to Me” a service for Good Friday on April 15.

“The service on Good Friday is a Tenebrae service, which means a service of darkness,” explained Kyle Denton, director of the Branson Chorale. “The service will start out in the light,

and as we go through the service it will gradually get darker. We will explore the Stations of the Cross through music, readings and artwork from local artists.

The Chorale will be performing Taylor Scott Davis’ work ‘Return to Me,’ and it is a very powerful and emotional service with beautiful choral music accom-

panied by piano and solo cello.”

The Branson Chorale is a non-auditioned community choir that began in 2012 and is made up of members of the Branson-Lakes Area community.

“The service is geared towards everyone who is ready for the full Holy Week experience,”

Denton noted. “Good Friday is a heavy day, and this service describes that day very well, but it is the most beautiful work I’ve ever had the privilege of working on. Between the art work and the raw emotion from the music, you don’t want to miss this full experience.”

The bed and breakfast venue at 3590 St. Highway 265, with its gorgeous view looking down across wooded hills toward Branson, officially changed hands in February and reopened on April 4 as The Bradford.

New owners Trevor and Taryn Flota and Zach and Ashley Esplund said the overall look and feel will be very similar. In fact, previous owners Bob and Lucy Westfall still live close by and will be around to chat with returning guests.

Several rooms are unchanged except for new amenities including larger TVs. Others have been updated, retaining the thematic décor. Featured rooms include a patri-

otic/military theme; a bear theme perfect for younger families, and beach and golf themes. Two larger units, each with three bedrooms plus convertible sleepers for larger groups, are also available.

Fans of Steamy Joe Café, formerly located in downtown Branson, will be happy to know the restaurant will be occupying the former bakery/pastry shop area at The Bradford. Steamy Joe owners Randy and Ruth Ryel decided to postpone their own planned retire-

ment when the Flotas reached out to area restauranteurs about leasing the shop.

“It just felt like the right thing,” said Randy. Steamy Joe will offer its popular breakfast and lunch menu including favorites like the chicken salad croissant, quiches, and what many people considered the best biscuits and gravy in town, along with its pastry selection. Much of the coffee selection will also be available, and guests at The Bradford will receive a discount at the restaurant.

Starting May 2, Steamy Joe will be open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. for breakfast and lunch items. New at this location, the restaurant will also be open 2 to 10 p.m. for ice cream, popcorn, hot dogs, and some cold sandwiches, along with pastries and drinks.

Branson’s gospel music performers. Marvell recruited friends and colleagues to help him and began to spread the word of a Sunday service, held at the Willie Nelson Theater to motorcoach groups and individuals throughout Branson.

Said James, “The Johnny Minick family was doing a Sunday program at the theater, and the Lord impressed me to help them, and it became the first and biggest of the Sunday services in a theater here in Branson. Rick Guy was the first minister to preach there.”

Rick Guy noted, “It was just a miracle. We got things started, and we were averaging about 1,500 people at each service through the kindness of Willie Nelson giving us his theater.”

From simple beginnings, and through much promotion, the Sunday theater services took off, and before long many theaters held their own services on Sunday mornings,

a tradition that continues to be popular today.

Marvell would continue to be a familiar face in Branson for many years. He was well known at the Branson Mall, where he sold his jewelry, sang at the stage in the Mall’s food court area, and, most notably, promoted and encouraged each of the other entertainers that performed in the venue. A talented performer in his own right, Marvell always found ways to shine the spotlight on other entertainers, often giving them his time on stage, and constantly singing their praises to

those in the audience.

After leaving the Branson area to return to his hometown of Tampa, Marvell continued to make regular trips to Branson, as he continued to support and encourage his friends in the Branson entertainment field, always finding ways to promote them and their art.

For several years, Marvell produced “A Marvelous Christmas,” featuring many of his Branson friends on a production that aired on various television stations. In recent years, he because a vital part of the ALG Gospel Network, work-

ing alongside founder Roy Young, which gave him another avenue to promote Branson, as he aided many Branson artists in securing their own regularly scheduled shows or specials on the network.

Following Marvell’s passing, many shared their thoughts on this kind, generous and talented man.

longer here with us, but happy for him that he’s now with his Savior that he longed to be with.”

Former Branson Mayor Karen Best noted, “James Marvell was a one-of-a-kind talent. He was instrumental in starting the Sunday morning services at local theaters. He poured his heart and soul into our community. He loved giving back.

He was a true ambassador for live

entertainment in Branson. His spirit and legacy will live on for years to come. We will all miss him greatly.”

Branson Radio personality Gary Greybeard shared, “He was a friend, a great entertainer, and a big supporter of the station.”

Another radio personality, Karen Berka, added, “He was the real deal. He had a heart for God and for the entertainers. I was so glad he

included me as part of his ALG “A Marvelous Christmas” production.

It meant so much to me.”

Marvell’s longtime friend Cindy Scott shared, “James was such wonderful person. He was always causing me to laugh. He was a very kind soul, and I think he would have given the shirt off of his back for anybody. Even though he hasn’t been in Branson on a steady basis, I’ll always remember that little grin of his and his laugh. RIP James Marvell. I will always think of you.”

Roy Young, founder of the ALG Gospel Network, shared his thoughts. “James Marvell is not only my associate, but he was my best friend and was like family to me. The loss of James is very hard for me. James was one of the world’s greatest promoters, and I don’t know how I’m going to be able to cope because without James, half of ALG is gone.

Bev Eugenio said, “I met him around 10 years ago. He was such an amazing and gifted man with a great and loving heart. I had the honor to interview him for a marketing project I was working on. He was so happy and generous to share his amazing history of his time spent here in Branson. Russ and I had the honor to help him recently

on a project he was putting together. He graciously sent a message to thank us for what we had done. He truly will be missed and was loved by everyone. He left a wonderful legacy that will always be remembered. See you again in heaven, James.”

Said singer and songwriter Lynda Lynn, “Such a sweet, sincere, loving, bouncy, talented, lovely God guy. He was a pure sweetheart. My heart is broken.”

Entertainer Randy Plummer, who knew James well, shared, “James has been one of my greatest friends for quite a while— I’m guessing around 15 years. I sang at center stage by Walmart on Highway 76 for over two years, and James and Faye also sang there, as well as having their own jewelry shop there.

James, Faye and I would sing there together on stage at times, and I always enjoyed it. James always stood up for and promoted singers and songwriters all over, and Branson held a very special place in his heart. He promoted Branson on a regular basis. James was a very generous man. He once slipped me money some years back to help me in promoting my “Snowdeer” Christmas story and also invited me to the Baldknobbers Theater this past season before the Terry Awards to come dressed as Santa, to promote my “Snowdeer” story. He is and will always be a major inspiration in showing Jesus to the world and blessing others along the way. Rest in peace with your Savior, Jesus. We love you!”

Said Terry Beene, founder of the Terry Awards, “James was a friend for over 20 years. Not everyone liked James, but he loved everyone.

Branson Marketing expert Carrie Anne Mitchell said, “He was a kind and sweet person who loved God, Branson, people and music. He was an inspiration to many in the gospel music industry here in Branson and all over the world. He was passionate about Jesus, and I highly admired James for his faith. He will

be missed.”

Branson Globe Publisher Rob Doherty had only known James for a short time and considered him a dear friend. Said Doherty, “James was a very kind man and loved to promote everyone. I finally met him at my office when he came in town for the Branson Terry Music Awards. The first thing he gave me was a bolo tie that he had handcrafted. He loved it when we would have stories in the paper regarding ALG and his friends whom he had met throughout the years. I’ve only known James a little over a year but feel very blessed to call him a friend.”

Branson comedian Terry Wayne Sanders summed up the feelings of all when he said, “James Marvell—

truly a godly man and a friend to all. I’ve known him for many, many years, and I was always amazed at his enthusiasm and zest for life and the Lord.
