Tippin’s debut single, “You’ve Got to Stand for Something” became an anthem for American soldiers during the Gulf War and established him as a true patriot.

Many of his songs were themed to uplift the USA as well.

Taney County will soon offer free testing for COVID-19. Beginning October 27, free COVID-19 testing will be available on a weekly basis.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, working in conjunction with the

US Department of Health and Senior Services, has announced several new testing sites in the state of Missouri, operating on a regular schedule.The new testing sites are part of a national effort to increase testing. The sites will be located

in areas of higher population that have experienced recent increases in new cases and hospitalizations due to the virus.

By KD Michaels, Staff Writer Women of all ages showed up on Thursday to attend the 13th Annual Ladies’ Piccadilly Gala at Branson’s Chateau on the Lake.

Those in attendance dressed to fit the safari theme and enjoyed an evening of fun and frivolity.

The event began with a reception of wine, cheese and fruit, and the ladies placed their bids on numerous silent auction Items.

Entertainment was provided by the Staccato Show Choir, and guests enjoyed a delicious three-course meal.

Buck Run Farms and the Dave and Erica Harrig Foundation, Branson Party Rentals, The Crystal Fish, Touch of Class and Chateau on the Lake. Numerous other local businesses offered table sponsorships or provided auction items, door prizes, or merchandise for the silent auction.

All proceeds from the unique event benefit the Downtown Branson Betterment Association, helping fund their annual activities

such as the popular crafts and music festival, Autumn Daze.

The DBBA’s main focus is the preservation and revitalization of Historic Downtown Branson.

“A special thank you to all of our local businesses who sponsored our event or who generously donated great items for our auctions,” said DBBA Director Jessica Luthardt.

“We have all scratch, homemade, home cooking items,” said owner Dyan Baughan. “Everything from meatloaf to our daily blue-plate specials. We have fried catfish, chicken. Good, made-from-scratch food—fast. Our burgers are half-

pound choice, cut fresh daily. I’m told almost every day by customers that it is the best burger they’ve ever had!”

Baughan noted that the Branson City Diner came about because she really missed the restaurant business.

“After having 13 restaurants and then being out of that business for five years, I missed it. It’s what I love to do,” Baughan explained.

“So, I built this food truck to go to dog shows and big events, and the

virus knocked us right out of the water with that. I was driving one day and I saw this spot, and I could visualize a really awesome little outdoor food truck area. I opened here on May 1, and it’s been going great.”

Baughan added that the recipes she uses at the Branson City Diner are a culmination of her favorite recipes collected from more than 40 years in the restaurant industry.

Dear Branson Community, I’d like to thank the Southern Stone County Fire Protection District for the use of their “Burn Trailer.” Our Branson Fire & Rescue Department used it last week for live fire simulation training. This is a great tool to give our fire and rescue personnel the opportunity to work together using their gear with actual fire and smoke in a trailer designed to simulate a kitchen, basement, bedroom and family room.

I made a few mayoral proclamations this week. I declared October 20, 2020, Arbor Day in Branson, and we celebrated by planting a new memorial tree near the dog park inside Stockstill Park. I also made a proclamation for “Lights on Afterschool Day” on October 22, 2020. This is a nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities.

The Captain’s Table participated in our planning department’s “Open for Business” process this week.

Open for Business is a free service the city offers to encourage, facilitate and help new businesses open in Branson. The Captain’s Table will be a new center focused on providing culinary skills to veterans. We wish you great success in this endeavor. Go to the city’s website for more on Open for Business.

We had a good study session this week with the board of aldermen. The study sessions are used

as a forum for informal discussion between city staff and the board of aldermen, but no formal action is taken. In this particular session, we discussed the Branson Landing Transportation Development District and received a presentation

on the tourism tax renewal process. Study sessions are held on an as-needed basis when the board of aldermen needs clarification on an issue or subject. You can get alerts sent straight to your phone when study sessions are scheduled and get alerted when the agendas are posted by signing up for E-notifications on the city’s website.

Don’t forget we have some Halloween events planned at the Branson RecPlex next week. The Branson Parks & Recreation Department will host a Halloween hayride and a haunted barn nightly, beginning Tuesday, October 27, 2020, through Friday, October 30, 2020. Our Branson Senior Center will also host a drive-through ice cream social from 12:00 p.m. to

2:00 pm on October 30, 2020. More details on all these events are on the city’s website.

If you are looking for ways to get involved with the city, we have a few volunteer positions available.

The Industrial Development Authority has two open positions to fill the term until December 2026, and the Board of Adjustment has one alternate position open to fill the term until April 2025. Visit the city’s website for a description of these boards, what they do, and how to apply.

Branson Auto Alliance to host Trunk or Treat Event October 31

By Daryl Weather, Weather Forecaster The Branson Auto Alliance will have their 4th annual “Trunk or Treat” event on October 31 starting at 6 p.m. The event will be held in the Price Chopper parking lot located at 2210 W. 76 Blvd. in Branson.

Event organizer Dave Miller, explains that all safety precautions will be taken during the event.

Group members handing out candy will be masked and wearing gloves.

The group also requests that anyone attending the event social distance as much as possible.

“We know that social distancing can be a challenge at events like these, but hopefully we can do our best to provide a safe environment for everyone,” Miller says.

“We also want to thank Price Chopper for allowing us to hold this event in their parking lot.”

Even if you’re not into trunk or treating, you will enjoy seeing some awesome cars and trucks.

The event is free and open to kids of all ages and their parents.

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer King’s Chapel, Branson, invites area families to Candy Lane, a safe, fun alternative to traditional Halloween festivities this year. Candy Lane will be held Friday, October 30, at 6 p.m. at the church’s Music City Centre, 1839 W. 76 Country Blvd., Branson.

In addition to plenty of candy treats, kids will experience an edu-

cational journey through a series of decorated rooms, each with a different theme. Activities will include a costume contest, face painting, and games.

The $2 admission also includes a mini show in the church’s theater.

According to a news release, The Greatest Show, is a musical stage show featuring the hottest artists of yesterday and today. The show

Animals, people rescue each other in heartfelt docuseries

By Lynn Elber LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a new docuseries, a child who uses a walker meets a dog with its own version of wheels. Inmates find solace in training canines for adoption, and pigs strut their stuff in a “body positivity” celebration.

That and more is part of “That Animal Rescue Show,” an endearing project that reflects its unexpect-

ed creators as well as its stars, human and otherwise. All 10 episodes are out Oct. 29 on the CBS All Access streaming service.

“What the series is about is people rescuing animals, and animals rescuing people,” said Oscar-winning documentarian Bill Guttentag (“Twin Towers,” “You Don’t Have to Die”), one of the big names behind this small gift of touching and

quirky stories.

The other: Oscar-nominated filmmaker Richard Linklater (“Boyhood”), who acknowledges that a documentary is a rare venture for him. But he sees a connection to his films, which include “School of Rock” and the bookend romances “Before Sunrise” and “Before Midnight.”

“I’ve often done films about peo-

ple who are kind of obsessed or passionate people. That’s what you’re looking for in a story,” he said.

He and his collaborators, including Nayeema Raza, Guttentag’s writing-producing partner, committed to holding themselves and the series to a high standard.

“Rick said something to us which I thought was just great,” Guttentag recalled. “’What I’d really like to

do is come up with 10 little documentaries that could all make it into Sundance (film festival) on their own.’”

Can’t crush this: Beetle armor gives clues to tougher planes

By Marion Renault NEW YORK (AP) — It’s a beetle that can withstand bird pecks, animal stomps and even being rolled over by a Toyota Camry.

Now scientists are studying what the bug’s crush-resistant shell could teach them about designing stronger planes and buildings.

“This beetle is super tough,” said Purdue University civil engineer Pablo Zavattieri, who was among a group of researchers that ran over the insect with a car as part of a new study.

So, how does the seemingly indestructible insect do it? The species — aptly named diabolical ironclad beetle — owes its might to an unusual armor that is layered and pieced together like a jigsaw, according to the study by Zavattieri and his colleagues published in Nature on Wednesday. And its

design, they say, could help inspire more durable structures and vehicles.

To understand what gives the inch-long beetle its strength, researchers first tested how much squishing it could take. The species, which can be found in Southern California’s woodlands,

(AP) — In what most people would consider a lucrative mistake, a Detroit-area man who accidentally bought an extra lottery ticket has won two $1 million jackpots.

Samir Mazahem, 56, of Dearborn Heights said he was saving numbers on a lottery app after buy-

ing a $2 ticket for the June 9 Mega Millions game. He then realized that he had purchased a second ticket with the same numbers.

“I was a little bummed but didn’t think much about it,” Mazahem said.

Until he recently logged onto the app and found he had two $1 mil-

lion winners.

“I couldn’t believe it was real,” Mazahem said. “It took several days for the reality to set in that my mistake had paid off to the tune of $2 million!”

He recently claimed his prize and plans to buy a new house and save the rest.

Mrs. Johnston said, “It started with my granddaughter and assistant manager at All About Me, Cameryn Gray. She heard that all other trunk or treat events were being canceled and that many people were not going to participate in the tradition because of the recent pandemic. Cameryn felt terrible for all the little ones that have costumes and no where to show them off, so she approached us about hosting a trunk or treat at All About Me/U-Haul. Well after discussing the idea with the family and then the other business in the plaza, we got such positive feedback we just knew we had to do it.” But, why the name “Truck or Treat?” Mrs.

Johnston answered, “Well that came from my daughter-in-law Wendy. She suggested since we do U-Haul why not call it “‘Truck or Treat.’”

What can everyone expect?

“Of course, safety is our first concern so everything will be contact free and those handing out treats or prizes will be wearing gloves. We will have several stations that each business will decorate and embellish. There will be a few surprises for the little ones and photo opportunities for the parents. Since this is a family affair for us, our theme will be the Addams Family, so if you see Morticia, Gomez, Uncle Fester and the rest, be sure to say hello.”

Through the USA Veterans Hope Center, veterans will be trained in all aspects of food service then enter the workforce equipped with new skills, self-sufficient training and regained self-respect.

The Captain’s Table Restaurant is targeting the first week of November to be open to the public with service provided by properly trained veterans.

The Center will offer expanded services to veterans at the Branson Star Theater/Veterans Event Center, which is in the process of becoming property of USA Veterans Hope Center.

The novel Dracula, by Bram Stoker, was published in 1896 and has remained a classic story with many renditions. In the story, an intrepid band of vam-

pire hunters attempt to end an ancient evil, tying together Carpathian folk tales of the Nosferatu and the historical Voivode Vlad Tepes, known as Dracula. Stoker imagined a being of immense but evil cunning, a shape-shifting predator, and a power-hungry conqueror from an earlier age.

The novel, first presented as a stage play in 1927, has been presented all over the world and is the basis for the 1931 classic Dracula starring Bela Lugosi.

McNulty freely uses this stage play in his adaptation. Dracula has had many different incarnations – Lugosi played him with snake-like aristocracy, Gary Oldman as a tragic figure of epic overreach, and Christopher Lee as a controlling madman. This production of Dracula is closest to Stoker’s imagination: he is

a beast with two personalities, one all primal bloodlust, the other a time-displaced medieval dictator who lives to enthrall, enslave, and control.

In the play, Professor Van Helsing and his brave comrades must hunt down and destroy the profoundly evil Count Dracula.

But the Count is exceedingly resourceful, employing superhuman strength, psychic powers, and shape-changing to confound and frustrate his antagonists. Culminating in a wild and shocking confrontation between the King of Vampires and those who would rid the world of him, this adaptation is an action-packed, bloodsoaked retelling of Bram Stoker’s classic tale of horror.

Even the title sequence is notable, a nod to the early photographic sequence that captured a galloping horse with all hooves off the ground. Cats, chickens and pigs are among those who get the cinematic treatment here.

The project found a myriad of subjects in and around Austin, Texas, where longtime resident Linklater has a farm and where the idea for the series was born.

Networking credit goes to Dood, the Linklater family pig that drew the filmmaker into the company of the Central Texas Pig Rescue and managing member Dan Illescas, described by Linklater as “kind of a pig behaviorist.”

Besides being schooled by Illescas on pigs — “You want to treat them like dogs, but they’re not dogs. They’re pigs,” — Linklater said he was introduced to the volunteer operation caring for some 200 homeless pigs. (Many are given up by owners who find their so-called “mini-pig” is an underfed animal destined to grow, Illescas says in the series.)

It’s a haven for a menagerie of abused and neglected animals, visited by children with challenges who “pet, and love and heal alongside the animals,” as owner Jamie Wallace Griner says in the series.

The Guttentag-directed episode that was bound for Telluride highlights the Paws in Prison program at a correctional facility. Dogs in need of adoption are paired with inmates who are given the skills to train them and a shot at new confidence.

And there is, really, a pageant to celebrate porcine heft featured in episode three.

Art exhibit in Chadwick Boseman’s hometown honors legacy

By Sarah Blake Morgan CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — There’s a hole in Anderson, South Carolina. It opened suddenly in August when Chadwick Boseman, one of the city’s favorite sons and

an international star for his role as the Black Panther, died after a quiet battle with cancer at just 43 years old.

Two months later, that void is slowly being stitched together by local artists who picked up their

brushes to honor Boseman with a new outdoor art exhibit in downtown Anderson, a city of about 28,000 people.

Local artist Joey Withinarts started painting his take on Boseman’s

image just hours after the news broke of his passing. His depiction is one of nearly 20 on display in the project sponsored by the city.

“The feeling behind it, words can’t even explain, even the way we bring it all together in different styles, it was just something everyone had to see,” Withinarts told The Associated Press.

Boseman rose to Hollywood stardom after taking on such iconic roles as Jackie Robinson, who integrated baseball, and the Black Panther. The Marvel superhero movie became one of the top-grossing films in history and he inspired millions with his character’s signature “Wakanda forever!” salute.

The accomplished actor never spoke publicly about his battle with colon cancer. He was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer in 2016 and continued working while privately battling “countless surgeries and chemotherapy,” his family said in a statement.

Boseman’s resolve was awe-inspiring to Dawson.

“He’s showing us that no matter what you’re going through, whatever you’re fighting through, if you love what you love, don’t ever give up on your dream,” Withenarts told the AP. The exhibit, which opened to the public Thursday, features nearly twenty local South Carolina artists.

The pieces lining the walls of the Wren Pavilion offer different takes on Boseman’s life, from his teenage years to his iconic superhero role.

Local artist Troleum Dawson, who is a colon cancer survivor himself, says the project has brought the community closer.

“It shows all the different faces that he had and the smiles,” he said.

Many of the paintings show Boseman dressed as T’Challa, the king of Wakanda. Others capture his red-carpet smile, while one portrait depicts a young Boseman playing basketball at T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson. That piece was given to the mayor and will be displayed at Boseman’s alma mater. Exhibit organizer Herman Keith Jr. sees Boseman’s life as a message to young kids living in small towns like Anderson and beyond.

“The impact that he had on the world coming from the same place that we come from, under some of the same situations and conditions that we come from, and to see that he was able to affect the world the way that he did, it was very encouraging,” Keith said.

The artwork is being displayed on digital prints adhered to the walls of the pavilion. The city hopes to keep the exhibit open for at least a year.

Think Sandy Koufax, Fernando Valenzuela and Orel Hershiser, all leaders of title runs.

Now Buehler has the Dodgers two wins from the championship that has eluded them since 1988.

Buehler struck out 10 over six innings in a pulsating performance, and Los Angeles beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-2 on Friday night for a 2-1 World Series lead.

“Being a big-game pitcher and really succeeding on this stage, there’s only a few guys currently and throughout history,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “He’s in some really elite company,” Justin Turner homered in the first inning against a surprisingly hittable Charlie Morton, who was

chased in the fifth.

Austin Barnes, the Dodgers’ No. 9 hitter and catcher, added a sixth-inning homer against John Curtiss. He became just the second player to drive in runs with both a homer and a sacrifice bunt in the same Series game.

He’ll probably remember the home run most. ’It’s a cool little stat, but it’s not easy to barrel the ball up against all these really good pitchers,” Barnes said.

When compressed, they found the structure fractured slowly instead of snapping all at once.

“When you pull them apart,” Zavattieri said, “it doesn’t break catastrophically. It just deforms a little bit. That’s crucial for the beetle.”

In the structure of the beetle’s shell, nature offers an “interesting and elegant” alternative, Zavattieri said.

The scene shot in a New York hotel room in July — which resulted in Giuliani calling police — includes a moment when Giuliani is seen lying on a bed, tucking in his shirt with his hand down his pants and the young woman nearby.

Giuliani went to the hotel room thinking he was being interviewed about the Trump administration’s COVID-19 response.

The young woman is flirtatious with him and invites him to the bedroom, which is rigged with hidden cameras.
