Spread the Love event scheduled Oct. 11 in Branson

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Sunday, October 11 is the date for a special Spread the Love event in Branson.

Organized by former Branson resident Abby Lewis, who founded the Be Love Give Love movement, the goal is to line the Hwy. 76 Strip with love.

Lewis invites everyone to join her in spreading love and compassion throughout the community. All are encouraged to participate, regardless of race, religion, background, social status, political party or sexual orientation.

“Let’s unite in love. Let’s stand together on the foundation of love,” said Lewis. “This is an opportunity for all of us to set aside our differences and to unite in love and compassion for each other and for our community. The only agenda for the day is to spread the love and light up the world.”

The event is scheduled for 3 pm Sunday, October 11, with the goal of lining the Hwy. 76 Strip with love, from Bob Evans to IHOP. For more information about the event, contact Abby Lewis via email at abby@belovegivelove.com

JATC replenishes school supplies

Submitted to Branson Globe Usually the Junior Auxiliary delivers school supplies in January, but because of the pandemic this year the organization thought teachers could use an extra boost

at the beginning of the school year.

This month, JATC members Caren Brandenburg and Sharmon Hagler delivered school supplies to Bradleyville K-6, Kirbyville K-3, Mark Twain K-8 and Taneyville K-6.

Through the generosity of JATC members, each teacher also received a sack that contained a roll of paper towels, Lysol spray, hand sanitizer, Kleenex and wipes.

It also works to eliminate blight and prevent vacant structures from becoming unsightly or dangerous throughout the City of Branson.

Branson’s ‘purr-fect’ cat cafe offers Pets of the Week unique, affordable entertainment Tri-Lakes Humane Society, Reeds Spring

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Mochas and Meows, Branson’s Cat Cafe, has become a popular destination for visitors and locals alike, and a perfect option for affordable fun for the family.

The cafe offers guests a variety of tasty beverages, including hot and cold coffees and teas, smoothies and specialty drinks. Guests can sit in the cafe, viewing the cats through a large window, or make their way into the lounge for some up-close time with the cats.

Mochas and Meows is home to an average of 10 to 15 cats at any given time. The cats are on loan from The Shepherd of the Hills Humane Society, and most are available for adoption. The lounge provides plenty of seating for visitors, as well as lots of enrichment, bedding and toys for the

cats’ enjoyment, all in a clean and comfortable setting. .

Mary Trexler, owner of Mochas and Meows, opened the unique business nearly a year ago, in November of 2019.

“I knew I wanted to start a business,” said Trexler. “Around the time I finished my Bachelor’s degree, my daughter, who was eight at the time, adopted a kitten. She had always loved animals, but she

was fascinated by this kitten. She started asking if we could get more kittens, and just keep them for a little while. She didn’t know the term ‘foster’, but she wanted to save all of the cats. Opening Mochas and Meows was a great compromise for her!”

Trexler, her daughter, and her staff work diligently to help cats to find forever homes. As the cafe nears its first anniversary, they have assisted with the adoption of 81 cats so far. Trexler is anticipat-

City completes W. 76 Country Blvd. sidewalk improvements Submitted to Branson Globe In an effort to promote walkability as well as to continue to keep pedestrians safe along W. 76 Country Blvd, the City’s Public Works & Engineering Department has just completed a 400 foot stretch of needed sidewalk repairs at the intersection of W. 76 Country Blvd and Green Mtn. Drive going west.

This project leads directly back to the community-created Community 2030 plan, a policy manual created by the community for long-term goals and guidelines for the City to follow to enhance an inviting community and multi-faceted tourism economy. Under ‘Transportation’ (section 10) it states how important community leaders, stakeholders, and residents feel about improving the sidewalks for walkability and pedestrian safety along W. 76 Country Blvd. In part, it says “…

Building an interconnected net-

work of pedestrian accessible transportation promotes social, physical and economic health of any community.”

This project took 30 days to complete and consisted of removing the deteriorated and inadequate shoulder pavement and replacing it with a five foot wide concrete walkway. The project was funded by the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission’s (MHTC) W. 76 Country Blvd. relinquishment money. When the City took over this portion of W. 76 Country Blvd from the state, the MHTC agreed to pay the City over a period of 10 years for maintenance of the five mile corridor.

City Public Works crews will continue to remove and replace other area sidewalks around the City as budgets allow.

I hope many of you had the opportunity to participate in the “2nd Annual Branson Battle of the Badges” Blood Drive today. This provides the Fire and Police Departments a little bit of camaraderie and competition to see who can recruit the most blood donors. Thanks to Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church for providing a great venue for the event. We will let you know the “winner” next week but the ultimate winner is the Red Cross and all of our citizens who may be in need of this precious blood.

The Branson Prayer March was Saturday. The event was modeled after the Franklin Graham Prayer March in Washington, D.C. For additional details about the Branson march, see the Facebook event page. The Autumnal Equinox occurred on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, at 9:31 a.m. I’ve seen some of the trees in our area are already changing color and it once again reminds me how beautiful our region is every day of the year. On Wednesday, we temporarily opened the City of Branson Recycle

Center. This is part of our plan to assist the Taney County Commission as they work towards establishing a county-wide recycle center. The City is going to use the old City of Branson Recycle Center to help train County personnel and to help them work through business operation policies and procedures for the County Recycle Center.

Thursday was a very busy, thoughtful, and thought provoking day. We started with the 19th Annual Ozark Mountain Prayer Breakfast, “Celebrating National Day of Prayer.”

Halloween events for all ages planned at Branson RecPlex Submitted to Branson Globe The Branson Parks & Recreation Department will host a Halloween Hayride and a Haunted Barn nightly, beginning Tuesday, October 27, 2020, through Friday, October 30, 2020. Each event costs $5 per person and children under two are free.

The Halloween Hayride is designed for families and children 12 and under. The hayride runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. each night and tickets must be purchased online in advance to reserve a spot. Junior Auxiliary will still make its usual deliveries to local schools again in January. The idea behind this is, by this time of the year school supplies are running out, especially in our smaller schools.

It JATC’s way to say thank you to local teachers and let them know they are appreciated.

In January the highlight for teachers are gift cards they can use to supplement their classroom supplies.

School Supplies is one of many service projects that JATC members provide for the community. Other JATC projects include Tender Critters for children in trauma; Prom Dresses for girls in need; financial and labor support for the Crisis Center including birthday parties and child care for the children so moms can attend counseling sessions; Santa’s Gift House; Book Swap for children who live in extended-stay motels and Scholarships for each of the four high schools in Taney County. Members normally raise money for this and other projects through one major event - a fun Trivia Challenge with dinner and a Silent Auction. However, due

Barbara Fairchild began singing country music at a young age and by 1965 was a singing star, at least locally, in St. Louis, Missouri. After her high school graduation in 1968, she decided it was time to move to Nashville. Her big break was being signed by producer Billy Sherill, who also produced the legendary Tammy Wynette. Barbara had a few minor hits, but it was 1973 that turned her career around.

She became a bona fide country star with the million selling “The Teddy Bear Song”. She followed that with more hits including “Cheatin Is” and “Kid Stuff.” She most recently has

JATC is more than a nonprofit organization, it’s a group of women united by a single cause, dedicated to helping and making a difference in the lives of the children of Taney County. It was chartered by a group of caring, enthusiastic women in 1998 and continues to grow and thrive throughout Taney County. Approximately 50 members annually contribute more than 4,000 volunteer hours as they strive to improve the mental, physical, social and emotional well-being of children in Taney County.

A Supreme Court hero, and allround wise woman, Ruth Bader Ginsburg died a week ago Friday at the age of 87 surrounded by family at her home in Washington, D.C. She was the second woman justice to serve on the highest court in the land—a pioneer in her field, when there were few females in the halls of legal offices or law schools.

But there were other reasons we will always remember her.

1) She proved that mothers get things done—and then some.

RBG showed that being a mother can prove an advantage and not an impediment to a woman’s professional life.

In a 2016 essay for the New York Times, she wrote that she believed her success at Harvard and Columbia Law School—where she graduated joint first in her class in 1959—was actually down to having an infant to care for.

“My success in law school, I have no doubt, was in large measure because of baby Jane. I attended classes and studied diligently until 4 in the afternoon; the next hours were Jane’s time, spent at the park, playing silly games or singing funny songs, reading picture books and A. A. Milne poems, and bathing and feeding her.

“After Jane’s bedtime, I returned to the law books with renewed will.

Each part of my life provided respite from the other and gave me a sense of proportion that classmates trained only on law studies lacked.”

2) She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind.

Despite coming out of law school with top grades, no law firm in New York City would hire Ginsburg, who was, by then, a mother of two.

She began teaching at Rutgers and Columbia. Those positions gave RBG the opportunity to advocate for women’s rights. She forged a name for herself that led to her 1980 appointment to the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington D.C. Thirteen years later, President Clinton nominated her for the Supreme Court.

As one of nine, Ginsburg was known as the “Great Dissenter.” She had special neckwear that she donned, even calling one her Dissent Collar.

The cases on which Justice Ginsburg dissented weren’t trivial: She spoke up on matters of affirmative action, employment discrimination, access to abortion, and controlling political campaign spending.

She demonstrated how, when you believe something’s wrong, to use your voice.

3. She showed there’s value in stoicism.

In an interview with legal academic Jeffrey Rosen, published in the Atlantic, she spoke of ignoring ‘useless emotions’.

“My mother’s advice was, don’t lose time on useless emotions like anger, resentment, remorse, envy. Those, she said, will just sap time; they don’t get you where you want to be.”

“One way I coped with times I was angry: I would sit down and practice the piano. I wasn’t very good at it, but it did distract me from whatever useless emotion I was feeling at the moment. Later, I did the same with the cello. I would be absorbed in the music, and the useless emotion faded away.”

Perhaps that’s why RBC loved listening to classical music all her life— even during her famous workouts.

Neighbor calls 911 when hockey fans yell ‘Shoot! Shoot!’

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A neighbor called sheriff’s deputies on some rabid Tampa Bay Lightning fans who were screaming “shoot! shoot!” as they watched Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final on television Wednesday night.

The call prompted several Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies to show up at Devon Garnett’s apartment door. He and two friends had gathered to watch the game at Garnett’s Radius Palms apartment.

In the first period, the trio began screaming for a goal, prompting the 911 call.

The caller told dispatchers someone was yelling loudly in the apartment above just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, according

to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s spokesperson Natalia Verdina.

“So they came to the door and thought there were guns in the house,” Garnett, 26, told the Tampa Bay Times. “We’re like, ‘Nope, we’re just screaming for Steven Stamkos.’”

According to a sheriff’s office dispatch report released Thursday, the complainant told police

he heard a couple screaming at each other, with one yelling, “I dare you to shoot!”

Deputies went on their way after talking to everyone involved. “(The police) completely understood and just laughed it off,” Garnett said. “But they thought it was serious because I was screaming ‘Shoot!’ as in ‘Shoot the puck.’”

Bank manager finds 9.07-carat diamond in Arkansas state park LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A bank manager discovered a 9.07-carat diamond at a state park in southwestern Arkansas after thinking the precious gem was a piece of glass.

Kevin Kinard of Maumelle found the second-largest diamond in the 48-year history of Crater of Diamonds State Park on Labor Day, according to a news release from Arkansas State Parks.

Kinard said he and his friends hauled sifting equipment to the state park in Murfreesboro. Kinard noted that he’s been visiting Crater of Diamonds regularly since he was a kid but had never stumbled upon a diamond until Sept. 7.

“I only wet sifted for about ten minutes before I started walking up and down the plowed rows,” he said.

“Anything that looked like a crystal, I picked it up and put it in my bag.”

While searching in the southeast portion of the 37.5-acre (15 hectare) diamond search area, Kinard scooped up a marble-sized crystal that had a rounded, dimpled shape.

“It kind of looked interesting and shiny, so I put it in my bag and kept searching,” Kinard said. “I just thought it might’ve been glass.”

Several hours later, Kinard said

he and his comrades stopped by the park’s Diamond Discovery Center, where park workers identify visitor findings and register diamonds.

“I almost didn’t have them check my finds, because I didn’t think I had found anything,” Kinard said.

“My friend had hers checked, though, so I went ahead and had them check mine, too.”

Upon having his finds assessed, an employee informed Kinard he had discovered a diamond.

“I honestly teared up when they told me,” Kinard said. “I was in complete shock!”

Assistant Superintendent Dru Edmonds noted that conditions were ideal for Kinard to spot the gem.

“Park staff plowed the search area on August 20, just a few days before Tropical Storm Laura dropped more than two inches of rain in the park,” he said. “The sun was out when Mr. Kinard visited, and he walked just the right path to notice the sunlight reflecting off his diamond.”

As of Wednesday, 246 diamonds have been registered at Crater of Diamonds State Park this year, weighing a total of 59.25 carats. On average, people find one or two diamonds there daily.

The boss is retiring, and he’s gifting £10 million ($12.7 million) to his employees as a goodbye.

David Stevens is the chief executive of Admiral, the successful Wales-based motor insurance company that’s been listed on the London Stock Exchange since 2004. He co-founded the business with his wife Heather in 1991.

Starting with a team of just 57, they now have 7,500 staff in the south of Wales, and 3,000 overseas in the US, Spain, Italy, France, India, and Canada.

Full-time workers will get £1,000 ($1,270), and part-time staff will receive £500 ($635).

The 58-year-old CEO explained to the BBC, “Saying

thank you to all Admiral staff in this way is the right thing to do.” We’re “proud and for-

North Dakota neighbors move in to save farmer’s 1,000-acre harvest after his heart attack Good News Network September is harvest time in North Dakota. Like his neighbors, farmer Lane Unhjem was hard at it—until the unthinkable happened. When Unhjem’s combine caught fire, he went into cardiac arrest.

Unhjem was airlifted to a hospital in Minot where his condition was reported to be stable, but it was clear he wouldn’t be climbing back into the driver’s seat of a combine harvester anytime soon.

With 1,000 acres of crops yet to be harvested, Unhjem and his family were looking at taking a huge financial hit.

That’s when family, friends, and neighbors stepped in to help.

After word of Unhjem’s predicament got out, it was all hands on deck—or in this case, all hands on combines, grain carts, and semi-trucks.

“I talked to a couple of farmers, got their equipment, and then other people just started calling and we had equipment offered from all over the place in the county, and their workers to go with it,” family friend Jenna Binde said in an interview with KFYR TV News.

In all, about 60 farmers joined the effort, setting aside their own harvests to get Unhjem’s durum wheat and canola crops in their respective bins in a record time of seven hours.

While definitely pleased by

the outcome, Binde wasn’t in the least surprised that the community pulled together when one of their own was in need.

“Everybody knows the Unhjems, and they’re good people…” she said.

“[It’s] just kind of the farming way of life, too. You help your neighbor out when they need it and don’t expect anything in return.”

“Sowing kindness reaps its own rewards” is a fine senti-

ment, but seeing it in action is just the sort of heartening harvest we all could use a lot more of these days.

Good News Network A singing parrot has been wowing visitors to a wildlife park by belting out hit tunes by Beyoncé. Chico is a nine-year-old yellow-crowned Amazon parrot.
