8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals grants request to expedite College of the Ozarks case

Submitted to Branson Globe Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing College of the Ozarks filed their opening brief Thursday at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit in a lawsuit that seeks to halt a Biden administration directive that would force the private Christian college to open up its

sex-specific dorms and showers to members of the opposite sex.

The 8th Circuit granted ADF’s request to expedite the case after a lower court’s dismissal.

The lawsuit challenges a directive from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that forces religious schools to violate their beliefs

by opening their dormitories, including dorm rooms and shared shower spaces, to members of the opposite sex. The directive requires entities covered by the Fair Housing Act to not “discriminate” based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The appeal concerns the college’s request for a preliminary injunction order that would halt enforcement of the HUD directive while the lawsuit moves forward.

“Young women should not be forced to share private spaces—including showers and dorm rooms—with men, and a religious institution should not be forced to betray its religious beliefs,” said College of the Ozark President Jerry C. Davis. “It’s our college today. Tomorrow, it could be someone else’s college, school, church or organization.

The administration’s rule change forces religious schools to violate their beliefs by opening up female dorms to biological males and male dorms to biological females, or face fines of up to six figures, punitive damages and attorneys’ fees. HUD’s reinterpretation of “sex” in the Fair Housing Act comes in light of President Joe Biden’s executive order titled, “Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation,” signed in January.

The lawsuit, College of the Ozarks v. Biden, opposes the HUD directive and the execu-

tive order requiring it. The order, issued to all federal agencies, requires them to modify their policies on sex discrimination to include sexual orientation and gender identity. The lawsuit explains that the HUD directive contradicts the historical judicial interpretation of the Fair Housing Act, which confirms that “sex” means biological sex.

The suit also argues that the directive exceeds the administration’s authority and violates the constitutionally protected freedom of College of the Ozarks and similar religious institutions to operate consistently with their religious beliefs.

Taney and Stone County Relay for Life coming soon

By KD Michaels, Staff Writer The Relay for Life for Taney and Stone Counties is only a few short weeks away and event organizers are encouraging the community to rally together to help save lives from cancer.

Due to the pandemic, Relay for Life takes on a different look this year, but the purpose remains the same -- to honor and remember loved ones who had - or have cancer, and to raise money to fight against this disease that affects so many.

One change in this year’s Relay is the time frame. Typically, an all-night event, Relay 2021 will begin at 4:30 pm and end approximately six hours later “This year, we do not have an honorary chair person,” added Relay for Life Chair Lisa Wilfong.

“Instead, we are inviting all survivors to take the track with the torch when the luminary bags are lit.”

Purchasing a luminary bag is one way to be a part of the Relay for Life fundraising. A bag is purchased in honor of someone with

cancer, or in memory of a person who has passed away. The bags -- each containing a candle -- line the track and are lit at dark. This is a treasured Relay for Life tradition. With Covid-19 forcing the cancellation of last year’s event, ACS volunteers did hold a luminary ceremony, transforming it into a unique drive-through event.

Another way to be a part of this year’s Relay for Life is to sign up to join an existing team, or start a new team to raise money for the

ment, educational opportunity and the U.S. Constitution. On April 7, 2021, Pence announced the launch of a new political advocacy group, “Advancing American Freedom.”

The group’s stated goal is to “promote the pro-freedom policies of the last four years that created unprecedented prosperity at home and restored respect for America abroad, to defend those policies from liberal attacks and media distortions, and to prevent the radical Left from enacting its policy agenda that would threaten America’s freedoms.”

During the Symposium, participants can expect to hear from nationally known speakers, learn about patriotic education programs, connect with thought-leaders and practitioners, and access innovative patriotic education content and resources.

He said that Alderman Cooper requested the proposed ordinance after a citizen business owner in town contacted him expressing concerns over the additional burden of having to operate a restaurant, resort, or mini brewery to obtain a license to sell light wine or beer. “Staff recommends approval of this. We don’t believe this would cause an influx of traditional bars and taverns into the community but rather would provide opportunities for existing establishments that do not wish to operate a restaurant or resort to provide light wine and beer to customers,” Lebeck said.

The ordinance passed on its first reading by a five to one vote. Ward III Aldermen Ruth Denham was the only alderman voting against it.

Branson Mayor Larry Milton was not at the July 27 meeting.

When asked about the ordinance, he said that the proposed changes would substantially expand the types of businesses eligible to obtain licenses to sell alcoholic beverages. “These changes have already passed the first reading and will automatically become final if they remain on the consent agenda for the August 9, 2021, board of aldermen’s meeting. “Without expressing an opinion one way or the other about the changes, be-

cause of the speed with which this ordinance has moved forward, I would encourage those interested in the expansion of alcoholic beverage licensing to businesses that would not now be eligible for such licenses to get involved before the August 9 meeting,” said Branson Mayor Larry Milton.

Under the current Branson alcoholic beverages licensing provisions, there is no definition of “Restaurant.” As pertains to the serving of alcoholic beverages, the term used is “Restaurant-bar.” To serve alcoholic beverages, the establishment must derive “50% or more of its annual gross sales from the sale of prepared meals and food made and consumed on the premises, or which has annual gross sales of at least $200,000 from the sale of prepared meals and food consumed on the premises.”

The proposed ordinance deletes the current definition “Restaurant-bar” and adds a new definition, “Restaurants.” Under this definition, a restaurant is “any foodservice establishment where

food is prepared and intended for individual portion service and includes the site at which individual portions are prepared, which establishment has gross receipts derived from the sale of prepared meals or food consumed on or off the premises.”

The new definition of “Restaurant” only requires “gross receipts derived from the sale of prepared meals of food consumed on or off the premises. It contains no requirement as to the percentage of gross sales that must come from such sales or other minimal requirements as to gross sales.

The current ordinance permits licenses for the “Sale of malt liquor by the drink on the premises” and “Sale of liquor by the drink.”

However, they “can only be issued to a restaurant-bar, resort, or microbrewery.” Under the proposed ordinance, the words “can only be issued to a restaurant-bar, resort, or microbrewery” are eliminated.

Currently, it is unlawful for any person operating any premises where food, beverages or enter-

tainment are sold or provided for compensation, who does not possess a “license to permit the drinking or consumption of intoxicating liquor or non-intoxicating beer at the premises” to permit the drinking or consumption of intoxicating liquor or non-intoxicating beer at the premises.”

Children learn in different ways

By Pat Lamb Studies show that we tend to raise our children the way we were raised in spite of any training in child-rearing classes we may have received along the way. Without realizing it, we tend to think that our children will learn the same way we learned without taking into account the differences in inherited traits and personalities. We can be much more effective in parenting (and grandparenting) if we can understand the differences in the way children learn.

Some children tend to learn better by hearing information while others learn better by seeing or doing. Educators classify children as auditory, visual or kinesthetic learners. Actually, all children learn in each of these ways, but most are dominant in one or two of the ways.

Auditory learners learn best by having a story read to them rather than reading it for themselves.

They like to have music going most of the time and would rather have someone tell them what to do than read instructions for themselves.

They are often musically inclined and can learn better when things are set to music. Auditory learners might learn multiplication tables more easily if they are set to music.

In my opinion, many children have not developed listening skills and do not fall into this category.

Visual learners learn better with charts and graphs or demonstra-

tions. They need to see how a word looks to decide if it is spelled right, and they will probably learn their spelling words by writing them over and over rather than just saying them over and over. They will be the individuals who take a lot of notes when they are in high school or college. They need to be shown how to do things rather than just being told. Charts for daily chores work well for these children. They probably won’t just take a person’s word for something. They will probably want to see for themselves whether something is right.

Kinesthetic learners like to use their bodies and do active things.

They are usually the children involved in sports. They learn best by doing projects. They like doing Play-Doh projects when they are young. When they are older, they are the ones who like the social studies and science projects that in-

volve making things. An example of using a kinesthetic method to teach in school might be to have students stand and turn a certain number of degrees right or left to learn about degrees in a circle. At home, boys will love to do fix-it projects with Dad. Girls will like cooking or other projects involving action.

Observance of children will give clues as to how they best learn.

When children constantly doodle and draw pictures, you can know they are the visual learners. The very active children are usually the kinesthetic learners, and it is important to keep them busy with projects. Quiet children may be the auditory learners as they are listening for sounds in nature or listening to others. No two children are the same. Good parents and teachers will learn to observe the differences and capitalize on the way that children learn best.

Our bodies: A living sacrifice

struggled with hyperthyroidism and mental illness throughout my life. I feel helpless at times in the cycle of fatigue and the shame that comes with not functioning at full capacity. I’ve tried program after program and still find myself in that cycle of addiction to food that is slowly killing me. All the while, God is pleading, “Help me help you!”

While praying about this recently, God led me to Romans 12:12 which talks about making our bodies a living sacrifice and being transformed by the renewing of our minds. I often find myself unable to perform tasks that I know God is directing me to do because my brain and body are plagued with crippling fatigue.

Therefore, my life is not glorifying Him at the capacity that it could be! What an even greater wakeup call! When I desecrate my temple I am in direct disobedience to God! I have since realized that true change is not going to come by my greatest assertion of willpower. It will only come through the power

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Finishing a study of Hebrews with an online study group took me to chapter 13, verse 5: “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ (NKJV) I usually think of myself as fairly content. Our house isn’t large, but we like it. My car isn’t new, but it gets me where I need to go.

We’re not wealthy, but we can pay our bills and afford an occasional fun activity. That word “conduct,” though, set me to thinking. When I’m facing difficult decisions about elderly parent care, I admit to envying those who have siblings to help. When I look at my retirement account, I envy people

who didn’t lose their savings in the 2008 housing crash or deal with cancer. I have to remind myself that even in those difficult times, God didn’t forsake us and our daily needs were met; the Bible assures me that won’t change.

A few days ago, I asked my dad if he needed any new summer clothing. “Why?” he asked. “The shirts I have are fine.”

“Tennis shoes still comfy?”

“Why wouldn’t they be?”

The Greatest Generation, even those who didn’t openly profess faith, often epitomized contentment. They appreciated what they had. They lost friends and family in WWII yet still had faith in a greater cause and a higher power.

My dad served in the South Pacific in WWII and then came

of the Holy Spirit renewing my mind and bringing my thoughts into alignment with His word.

But I absolutely cannot do it alone! I need prayer and support, and I believe many others do, too.

“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.

This will bring HEALTH TO YOUR BODY and nourishment to your bones.” Proverbs 3:7-8.

I’ve often tried to be “wise in my own eyes” and to fix myself.

Fail. Trying in my own power to be healthy-ish for selfish reasons. To be attractive. To feel better. Not that those are bad reasons. But I did it with the idea that my body was MY body and I could do with it what I wanted. However, scripture says that I am not my own; I’m bought with a price. My body is a gift from God, and it is my duty to honor Him with it. I am to make my body a living sacrifice to HIM. But how often do we sacrifice our bodies to food tainted with poison by greedy corporations trying to make a buck off of our addiction to junk food? To harmful substances?

To sexual immorality? To laziness? All of these bring death.

However, when we sacrifice our bodies to God, he in turn gives us life, exceedingly and abundantly! Just making better choices isn’t enough. When we wrap our minds around the fact that God gave us our bodies so that we will accomplish his will on the earth, and then give our bodies over to be used for his glory, THEN and only then will we see and feel the miracle of true health and wholeness.

Lord, I pray for myself and anyone reading this who faces similar daily struggles. Heal our minds so that we won’t turn to unhealthy things to satisfy the cravings of the flesh. May we no longer be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Lord, I’ve tried desperately in my own power to overcome this deadly cycle but have failed miserably. I can’t do it. But with your strength in me, I can do all things. Release that power in me and in my friends’ lives. Refresh, heal and renew us from the inside out. Amen.

Lots of people who lived through the Great Depression had that mentality. Even those who became financially successful through investments or entrepreneurship often did so not for their own satisfaction but to continue contributing to society.

Elisabeth Elliott, widow of missionary Jim Elliott, lost her husband and friends to martyrdom, yet returned to work among the same tribe, living in very primitive conditions. Later on, she confidently wrote, “God has promised to supply our needs. What we

don’t have right now, we don’t need right now.”

The author of Hebrews wrote to Christian converts from Orthodox Judaism who likely faced ridicule or persecution for their faith, reminding them God would never leave or forsake them.

Honestly, the last year and a half have caused some of us to feel forsaken. COVID-19 took some people far too soon; decades-old family businesses closed; personal freedom has been restricted. Many worry about “global reset:” further restrictions, censorship, proof of vaccinations, or worse.

I hope to follow my dad’s example and lean on Hebrews 13:6, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

Food for thought: Driving in fog

By Doug Thompson, BDS Productions Recently on an early Saturday morning I had to go into work quite early. As soon as I walked out of the house, I could see a very dense fog surrounding the area. The fog was so dense it was difficult to see houses in the neighborhood. I did not relish the 15-mile drive to work in the dense fog and darkness but sometimes that is the way it is.

As soon as I got on the interstate, the fog seemed even thicker. I tried to concentrate on the lines on the interstate to be certain I maintained my lane. My visibility front, back and sides were greatly limited.

I did not want to go too fast that I would run up on another vehicle or too slow that I would be run into from behind.

As I continued to drive, I thought how much life can be like the experience of driving in the fog. We can’t see very far ahead of us and although we may remember our past, we can’t see very far behind us.

The road we travel may have hills, obstructions, curves and absolute danger ahead of us, but we can’t see it until we are upon it. Sometimes we find ourselves in the middle of a mess because we did not pay attention, watch for the warning signals or became distracted and cast our eyes in an area that we shouldn’t.

Sometimes when you drive in a heavy fog you will come upon a slower moving vehicle or perhaps a faster vehicle coming from behind you. You may choose to follow either but then, of course, you are relying upon the actions and the direction of the one you are following. So it is with life. You may choose to follow someone, but unless you are following our Lord and Savior you are at risk of falling off a cliff or running off the course that our Lord and Savior laid out for each and every one of us.

Yester Year’s Treasures and Antiques open in Branson Meadows

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Branson’s newest flea market, Yester Year’s Treasures and Antiques, opened on Thursday, July 29, at 4350 Gretna Rd. in The Shoppes at Branson Meadows. Chamber of Commerce officials and other community leaders joined the store staff for the ribbon cutting ceremony. Guests enjoyed refreshments, prize drawings, and entertainment from Loretta Lynn and Dean Martin, via Karaoke Classics with Richie.

Yester Year’s is owned and operated by Don and Maxine Miller, who moved to Branson from Wheaton, Missouri.

They had experience operating booths in other flea markets and hoped to do the same in Branson, but had trouble finding space available, so they decided to open their own. “We are excited to be a part of the resurgence of this mall,” said Maxine. “And it’s fun.” Their son Matt also helps with the market.

There are currently 40 booths in Phase 1, with capacity for up to 70 as a second adjoining storefront is ready to go. Pam Critchfield, a former interior designer and one of a group occupying the front booths in the second phase, is excited about the new shop. “I love to entertain and decorate,” said

Critchfield, “and this is the perfect way to make sure things I have collected and enjoyed but am no longer using will go to someone who appreciates them.”

Vendor spaces include a wide variety—home décor, woodcraft, Christmas themed booths, jewelry, and much more, even

specialty home-canned goods.

Yester Year’s is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Brian Seitz takes tour of Boys & Girls Club of the Ozarks Submitted to Branson Globe “I was ‘very pleasantly surprised’ by my tour of the Boys & Girls Club of the Ozarks today, which I took with my fellow Representative Travis Smith.” said Seitz Seitz explained they were greeted by Chief Executive Officer Stoney Hays and Director of Operations Patrick Stewart, which he says soon took on a more informal (and informative) aspect. One club member had been chosen to tell them the specifics of that area within the overall complex. Seitz

added, “The children were knowledgeable, well-read and well-behaved, able to answer questions and overall represented just why this organization is so valuable for area youth.”

Seitz stated that not having been involved with the group in the past, he was impressed to find that it is not at all a simple drop-off place for youth, but an instructive opportunity venue for kids to grow, in a safe, supervised environment. Most importantly Seitz said, “THEY LOVE BEING THERE!”

Nominees for 2021 Branson Show Awards announced

Held in August, the Branson Show Awards are a creation of Gary Wacklerly, who has seen and reviewed nearly all of Branson’s shows over the past 30 years. The Awards Committee of the Branson Show Awards visits every Branson show before announcing the nominations in more than 30 categories.

The committee members then cast votes to determine a winner in each category.

Anticipation is high for the 2021 event following the cancellation of last year’s awards program due to Covid.

(Don’t) color me beautiful

By Stephanie Barney, Owner, Lightspeed Electric With endless access to ideas on Pinterest, more and more homeowners are embracing the task of repurposing, repainting and redecorating things in their home. But remember – ideas posted online may be attractive, but they are posted by artists, not electricians. Here are a few things to keep in mind regarding electrical components.

Seriously, don’t do this. (Special to Branson Globe)

Do not paint plate covers, outlets or switches to match the wall color. Whether this is for decorating or merely convenience purposes, it is never a good idea. Aesthetically, it may look good…for a few months.

Eventually the paint will chip and peel, leaving it looking worse than it did to begin with.

Electrically speaking, painting outlets violates a National Electric safety code relating to the mechanical functioning of a device. Paint can clog the slots, making it impossible to fit a plug into the receptacle, or causing paint to chip off and get pushed/lodged inside the outlet.

This will hinder direct contact between the plug prongs and the conductive material in the outlet, which can result in electrical arcing, melting or fire. Also, wet paint (as it is being applied over an outlet) is a conductor of electricity and could result in electri-

cal shock.

Another inconvenience involves removing a wall plate once it has been painted over.

At some point, you may need access to that outlet and removing a painted over plate will tear off a strip of paint/drywall in the process, requiring touchup.

Lastly, it may seem like a good idea to paint an old light fixture to make it more attractive. The combination of potentially flammable paints and older fixtures with different heat ratings could spell trouble.

Know your limits and consider all things before choosing to paint electrical components. Fixtures, devices and plate covers come in a variety of colors and styles. Friends have owned various Mexican restaurants in the area, and both Beltran and Valdez continue to help out at a local restaurant along with operating the truck, due to the shortage of available staff. “We just love the food industry,” says Glenn. “It’s our passion, what we were meant to do.”

Branson City Diner celebrates one year of serving Hollister

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer A popular Hollister eatery is celebrating one year in business.

Owned and operated by Dyan Baughan, the Branson City Diner is a specialty food truck that makes its home in Hollister, serving lunch to many hungry customers each day and offering

delicious, made-from-scratch comfort food.

“I built the trailer in 2018, and I had a quarter of a million dollars’ worth of events booked to go to in 2020,” said Baughan. “Then Covid hit, and we had nowhere to go. So, I rented this spot.”

Hollister’s Yacht Club, Baughan has enjoyed much success.

“It was a very blessed year last year,” Baughan noted. “At the end of last year, I realized that the only way to grow my business was to offer climate controlled seating, because the rain knocks me out of business, the heat knocks me out, and the cold knocks me out.

So, I went and found the very first school bus that Hollister ever had – bus number one. I purchased it and renovated it. It took me four months.”

After those four months of work – and thousands of dollars in renovation costs – Baughan realized that she not only needed to meet fire and safety codes, which she had accomplished, but also building codes.

“You can’t make a bus into a building,” noted Baughan. “So I was back to square one, and I was not able to offer my guests indoor

dining.”

However, Baughan continues to serve her guests on her Hollister corner, offering lunch each day and providing a fantastic covering to shade her customers from the heat.

Since opening up last year, Dyan has enjoyed tremendous success, serving more than 10,000 customers. Ten percent of all Branson City Diner profits are donated to Standing By the Door, a recovery ministry founded and operated by Baughan and her husband Steve, offering hope and housing for hurting men and women in the Branson area. The ministry continues to grow and thrive, and additional houses have recently opened, giving the Baughans the opportunity to help even more of those in need.

During the month of August, Baughan is offering an anniversary special as a way to say “thank

you” to all of her guests, with daily “Buy One, Get One Half Off” specials. Tuesday’s special is Baughan’s half-pound Angus burger. Wednesday is chicken fried chicken. On Thursday the special is pork tenderloin, and on Friday the daily special is catfish.

On Saturday, Baughan’s “Buy One Get One Half Off” special is chef’s choice, which will rotate each week.

Said Baughan, “I want to thank everyone who has supported us over this last year. I want to give thanks to God, first and foremost.

And, I want to say thank you to A.J. Springstube, who is my rock.

She does it all!”

Hot Hits Theater shows pay homage to big names

Three of the newest shows featured at the Hot Hits Theater pay tribute to some of the biggest names in musical history.

No stranger to Branson, Hunt-

er has been a part of the Hot Hits Theater’s Motown Show for many years. Growing up in Detroit, Hunter was well schooled in Motown music. His new production features not only the music of Marvin Gaye, but also that of Percy Sledge, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and more.

A recent Trip Advisor review stated, “A must-see when you go to Branson, MO. Kirk Hunter has mastered many artists from Motown.

You won’t be disappointed.” Another review proclaimed, “He has a wonderful voice and knows his Motown. Kirk is very entertaining.”

“How Sweet it Is” and much more.

Shephard’s tribute to James Taylor and the Soft Rock of the ‘70s and ‘80s can be seen each Monday at 2 p.m. and select Fridays at 5 p.m. at Branson’s Hot Hits Theater.

Rounding out the trio of new shows is the Dean Martin and Friends Celebrity Tribute Show featuring Trey Dees. Trey, who calls Arkansas home, is a well-known name in Branson, having taken the stage at many Branson venues including the

Branson Mall Center Stage and the Jim Owen Show. While Dees’ new show features the music of one of his favorite singers, Dees will also share tunes from other crooners, such as Glen Campbell, Marty Robbins and Andy Williams, all showcased in an intimate setting. Reminiscent of the Dean Martin show, you will hear many of Dean’s favorites, including “That’s Amore,” “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime,” “Memories Are Made of This,” “Volare,” and a host of other songs from guests that might just knock on the door.

All prospective volunteers must complete a volunteer application and read and sign a liability waiver form, as well as present a copy of their Driver’s License or State ID. The Shepherd of the Hills Humane Society does accept volunteers under the age of 18, with a parent or guardian present.

Volunteers may select the hours that best fit their schedule, keeping in mind that it helps the staff to know when the volunteers will be available.

Special sensory swim session offered Aug. 9 Submitted to Branson Globe The Branson Parks & Recreation Department will host its third Sensory Swim session at the Branson AquaPlex, located at 1501 Branson Hills Pkwy, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on August 9 for individuals with Sensory Processing Disorders and differing abilities to enjoy the AquaPlex without the typical crowds and noise that come with a public pool.

This Sensory Swim session has many features designed for those with Sensory Processing Disorders in mind. The music and the fountain features will be turned off to reduce the noise level, the lifeguards don’t use loud whistles, and the number of participants is limited to provide a safe and calm environment for participants to enjoy. The water slides and playground will only be offered during the last hour of the event in order to provide adequate time for participants who enjoy decreased noise levels and time for those who enjoy the more interactive

features of the AquaPlex.

“A public pool can be an overwhelming experience, if not impossible, for people who have sensory processing issues or differing abilities. We are always looking for ways to be more inclusive and this Sensory Swim session is a great way for more people to have a fun and safe pool experience. It is also a great addition to our Inclusive Playground at the Branson RecPlex that is fully handicap accessible and is specially designed for emotional, cognitive, social and sensory development,” said Branson Parks & Recreation Director, Cindy Shook.

“More than a million people have requested or picked up a printed Missouri highway map over the past two years,” said MoDOT Director of Transportation Planning, Eric Curtit. “We print 1.3 million maps every two years.

While many travelers rely on their smartphones or other GPS sys-

tems to get around, a lot of people don’t have these options.”

Among other advantages, the paper map allows motorists to plan their route without having to worry about cellphone coverage or data drops, Curtit said.

Five classy Olympic moments that should win gold for inspiration

By Good News Network We’ve been looking for inspiring stories and have found some great shows of humility, humanity and smarts. Here’s a roundup of our favorite moments from the games, so far.

1. Swimmer Wins Gold and Tosses it to Teammate in the Bleachers When the schedule for a swimming relay race was radically altered, it left one American athlete sitting out of the qualifying heats to stay fresh for final.

Then, in a display of sportsmanship after winning gold, Caeleb Dressel found his teammate in the stands and tossed him the medal.

After the team’s first-place finish, as a show of thanks, Dressel located Brooks Curry in the stands and tossed him his gold medal, diverting

the gaze of the world toward the man whose fast swimming got them to the finals.

While Curry would later receive a medal of his own, only the finalists got to stand on the podium— and Dressel took the opportunity to show what teamwork is all about.

2. Runners Crash, But Then Join Forces to Cross Finish Line Together Team USA’s Isaiah Jewett had a good shot at the men’s 800m, but a Botswana runner in front of him fell, and they both crashed to the track in a tangle. However, the heartwarming scene that followed proved a real winner.

Jewett could see that Nijel Amos was also devastated, so he offered his competitor a hand up, and the

pair supported one another, determined to complete the race and cross the finish line together.

“He apologized, and I was like, ‘Let’s just finish the race,’” he told the Los Angeles Times.

3. High Jumpers Decide to Share the Gold In a real nail biter, two athletes in the men’s high jump had perfect scores—each had cleared jumps of 7 feet, 9.25 inches. Gianmarco Tamberi from Italy and Mutaz Barshim from Qatar had similarly tied in 2010, and had formed a unique bond between champions—especially after each faced career-ending ankle injuries, but recovered.

Tamberi was even on hand for Barshim’s 2018 wedding in Sweden.

Normally, an Olympic winner would be determined by a jump-

off, in case of a tie. But, Barshim spontaneously asked officials if the two men, who were now longtime friends, could share the gold—and they were given the green light.

“I look at him, he looks at me, and we know it,” Barshim told the CBC. “This is a dream come true.

It is the true spirit, the sportsman spirit.”

4. Brother and Sister Score First-Ever Same-Day Gold Medal Wins In a heartwarming moment for their family—and the host nation of Japan—a brother and sister, after a prolonged overtime battle, won gold on the same day.

Twenty-one-year-old Abe Uta took the top prize in the women’s judo finals and, hours later, her brother Hifumi threw down for

top honors in the men’s division— making them the first brother and sister pair ever to win Olympic gold on the same day.

“This was a dream for us,” Uta told the media, “It makes me believe dream comes true as long as I try to achieve it.” Her brother didn’t feel any pressure, rather: “It made me crave for it… Today is the best day of my life.”

5. Mathematics Professor Wins Cycling Gold Without a coach or any endorsement support, a 30-year-old with a Ph.D. in mathematics won the gold medal for Austria.

After 91 miles of pedaling, Anna Kiesenhofer crossed the finish line ahead of both the defending champion and the world titleholder, by solving the equation for training all on her own.

Considered a novice in the sport, Kiesenhofer credits her gold-medal performance to the “beautiful mind” she’s cultivated in her chosen field. “As a mathematician, you’re used to solving problems on your own, so that’s the way I approach cycling,” she told CNN. “Many cyclists…have a trainer, they have a nutritionist, they have the guy that plans the race for them.

I just do all these jobs myself.”

Registration open for youth flag football Submitted to Branson Globe The Branson Parks & Recreation Department is currently registering for Youth Flag Football for children who are in kindergarten through third grade.

This 7-v-7 instructional league is designed to introduce youth to the fundamentals of football in a safe and exciting way. Teams will have the ability to practice once or twice a week at Cedar Ridge Elementary and Stockstill Park, with all games held on Saturday mornings at Branson High School and

Junior High School.

Practices will begin the week of August 30, with the five-game season beginning September 11.

Taney County Health Department updates COVID-19 numbers Submitted to Branson Globe The Taney County Health De-

partment (TCHD) is saddened to confirm the deaths of six, previ-

ously unreported, Taney County residents due to COVID-19. One

individual passed in the month of June and five in the month of July.

The deaths include: • 2 individuals in their 40s • 1 individual in their 60s • 1 individual in their 70s • 2 individuals in their 80s The total of Taney County residents whose deaths can be attributed to COVID-19 is now 114.

TCHD announces COVID-19 deaths after the county of residence and the cause of death can be confirmed with both the Taney County Coroner’s Office and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. As a result, Taney County death count updates may lag behind numbers announced by the state of Missouri.

TCHD continues to remind the community that there are three tools available to lessen their

likelihood of getting COVID-19: vaccination, physical distancing, and wearing a face covering. The public is being asked to consider using more than one of these tools as part of a multi-layered approach due to the prevalence and severity of the Delta variant.

Practicing good hand hygiene and staying home when sick continues to be important in reducing the spread of the disease.

TCHD is encouraging everyone 12 years of age and older to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

Branson Centennial Museum Tuesday Talk features ‘Bears in Missouri’ Submitted to Branson Globe According to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), evidence shows black bear numbers are growing and their range is expanding, especially in the southern portion of our state. The public is invited to learn more about the charm and challenge of living in bear country at the next Tuesday Talk, hosted by the Branson Centennial Museum on August 17 at 12:30 p.m. Francis Skalicky with the MDC will present the history and science of “Bears in Missouri” along with fascinating finds from a decade of research used to inform the MDC’s Black Bear Management Plan. The free presentation will take place at the Branson Centennial Museum, 120 S. Commercial Street, in historic downtown Branson.

“Missouri’s bear research efforts began in earnest in 2010 with trapping, radio-collaring and collecting fur samples,” explains Francis Skalicky. “We have learned that the bear population is growing rapidly and that Missouri has a lot of quality bear habitat.

Citizen sightings, coupled with population and habitat research, has helped illustrate the adaptability and range expansion that is occurring as black bears recolonize parts of Missouri.”

“We have a black bear display in the museum,” adds Jean Babcock, co-curator of the Branson Centennial Museum. “When the first settlers came to Missouri, black bears ranged across most of the state. As Missouri became settled, unregulated hunting reduced the population to a small number found only in remote areas and by the mid-1900s, it was presumed black bears had completely disappeared. Then beginning in 1958, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission relocated more than 200 bears to their state, some of which are thought to have eventually wandered into the Missouri Ozarks.”

PG&E says it will bury 10,000 miles of power lines to reduce California fire risk

By Good News Network To help prevent sparking California wildfires, Pacific Gas and Electric Company has announced a major new initiative to bury 10,000 miles of power lines underground.

In addition to significantly reducing wildfire risk, undergrounding also benefits customers by lessening the need for Public Safety Power Shutoffs— which are called as a last resort during dry, windy conditions

to reduce the risk of vegetation contacting live power lines and setting off a wildfire.

This effort will also help ease the need for vegetation management efforts, leaving more of California’s trees untouched.

“We have taken a stand that catastrophic wildfires shall stop,” said CEO Patti Poppe in a statement. “We will gladly partner with policymakers and state and local leaders to map a path we can all believe in.”

Making the shift happen Pacific Gas and Electric Company is the nation’s largest natural gas and electric utility— serving more than 16 million people across 70,000 square miles in Northern and Central California.

In the past, undergrounding has been done on a select, case-bycase basis, and largely for reasons other than wildfire risk reduction.

Following the devastating October 2017 Northern California wildfires and the 2018 Camp Fire, PG&E began to evaluate placing overhead power lines

underground as a wildfire safety measure, and to better understand the construction and cost requirements associated with undergrounding for system hardening purposes.

In 2019, PG&E announced it would rebuild all its power lines underground in the Town of Paradise as it helps the community recover from the Camp Fire.

The company is also rebuilding power lines underground within the 2020 North Complex Fire footprint in Butte County.

Through these and other

demonstration projects and rebuild efforts, PG&E has been able to refine the construction and cost requirements associated with targeted undergrounding, enabling the acceleration and expansion of undergrounding projects.

“Ten thousand miles of [buried] line is a trip halfway around the planet; 10,000 miles of line is a trip from Chico to L.A. 11 times and back,” Poppe said. “We will partner with the best and the brightest to find the best solutions to make this audacious goal come to life.”

Long announces 2022 senate bid

By Jim Salter, AP News U.S. Rep. Billy Long, a conservative from southwestern Missouri, is entering the crowded race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Missouri.

Long, 65, announced his Senate bid Tuesday night on Tucker Carlson’s show on Fox News. He joins a long list of GOP candidates seeking the 2022 nomination for the seat being vacated by incumbent Republican Roy Blunt, who announced in March he would not seek a third term.

Other announced Republican candidates include Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt, former Gov. Eric Greitens, U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler and St. Louis attorney Mark McCloskey, who gained fame for pointing a gun at protesters who marched near his home in June 2020.

The decisions by Long and Hartzler carry some risk since both would be heavily favored to keep their seats in Congress if they ran again. Long was first elected to Congress in 2010.

He has been a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump.

Lesser-known Democratic contenders include Marine veteran Lance Kunce, former state Sen. Scott Sifton, St. Louis County startup owner Spencer Toder, Kansas City activist Tim Shepard and Air Force veteran Jewel Kelly.

Former Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon announced last week he would not enter the race.

Respect the Load. Share the Road: Commercial motor vehicle awareness campaign to run in August Submitted to Branson Globe Respect the Load. Share the Road. That’s the message you’ll be seeing across Missouri August 2-22 in a statewide campaign urging drivers to drive safely around large trucks and buses. In turn, commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers will be reminded to obey traffic laws, use their seat belts, slow down and pay attention.

“There were 130 people killed involving a CMV in 2020, with over 80% being drivers or passengers of other vehicles,” said Jon Nelson, MoDOT assistant to the state highway and traffic engineer. “Please don’t risk your life by driving aggressively around big trucks and buses.”

Commercial motor vehicles make up 20% of Missouri’s interstate traffic, carry goods from coast to coast and are a vital part of our nation’s economy. They also provide critical services many Missourians rely on every day.

When crashes involving CMVs happen, the disproportionate size of the large truck versus a car means those crashes can often involve serious injuries, or worse.

Research shows that in most of these crashes, drivers of passenger cars unnecessarily endanger themselves by not paying attention and driving aggressively around CMVs. That’s why it’s so important for all motorists to drive safely around CMVs. Respect the load.

Share the road.

The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety offers the following tips for driving safely around CMVs. • Don’t cut off large trucks or buses. Make sure you can see both of the truck’s cab lights in your rearview mirror before moving back into your original lane.

• Stay out of the “No Zone.”

Large trucks and buses have large blind spots on either side and up to 200 feet behind a vehicle. Pass only on the left side. Don’t linger in a blind spot. Do not tailgate large trucks and buses.

• Watch your following distance. Keep a safety cushion around large trucks. Can you see the truck’s side mirrors? If not, the driver cannot see you.

• Anticipate wide turns. Large

• Be patient. Large trucks and buses accelerate slowly and may use speed limiters.

MoDOT continues to work toward a goal of zero roadway fatalities and urges all who travel in and
