new pair of jeans to Taney County students in grades 7 through 12.

Approximately 25% of the youth in Taney County live at or below the poverty level. Many families are unable to afford new clothing for their children,

Last week, dogs were found in Branson, Branson West, Reeds Spring and Hollister, as well as the Ridgedale area and Omaha, Arkansas.

Jarrett Dougherty visits Oh Happy Day! with repeat performance June 23 Submitted to Branson Globe Nine years after they performed their last show together at the Pierce Arrow Theater, legendary Branson comedian, Jarrett Dougherty, joined Gary Koreiba and Kim Boyce at “Oh Happy Day” on June 2. Billed as a one-time only event, Jarrett filled in for “Oh Happy Day’s” regular comedians, Justin Oller and Alexander Koreiba, performing his famous “preacher” sketch and joining the cast for a song — and hilarity ensued!

“We were so happy that Jarrett could do the show with us when our

comedians were away. We worked together for ten years, twice a day, six days a week, and having him with us for an “Oh Happy Day” show was like old times,” said Gary Koreiba, the show’s founder and one of four talented singers.

If you missed Jarrett with “Oh Happy Day,” you have one more chance to see him! On Wednesday, June 23, at 10 a.m., Jarrett will join Gary, Kim, Allen Asbury, Debra Paxton and the “Oh Happy Day” band. Jarrett performs regularly at the “Down Home Country” show at the Grand Country Theatre on

the 76 Strip. “Down Home Country” is off for the summer, so Jarrett could perform with “Oh Happy Day” for one — now two — dates!

“We always tell people that our time with Jarrett at Pierce Arrow was more fun backstage than it was onstage. Jarrett is one of our dearest friends,” explained Kim Boyce.

“We love Jarrett, his wife Kara, and son Dillon. They’re family, so being together for a couple of shows is a very special experience.”

Embers Cigar Club ‘hogs’ up $5,000 to benefit Branson Veterans of America 913

By Gary J. Groman, Independent Writer On Saturday, June 12, 2021, the Embers Cigar Club roasted a whole hog to benefit Branson Veterans of America 913 (Veterans 913). The benefit, including raffles and auctions, was held on Lake Taneycomo, just outside the Embers Cigar Lounge, next to The Paddlewheel Pub. The benefit raised about $5,000 in cash and pledges for Veterans 913.

Kevin McConnell, who owns Embers Cigar Club with his wife Betsy, said, “Branson Veterans 913 is a great organization and does a lot for Veterans in our community. We are so excited to help contribute to their efforts and help raise funds for our Veterans here in

Branson. Our goal is to raise a significant amount of money for 913 while, at the same time, having a great meal and a good time.”

McConnell said that although the Embers Cigar Club is sponsoring and hosting the benefit, the response of the community in donating food, auction and raffle items, and labor for the event was terrific.

by U.S. Foods, the “sides” by The Paddlewheel Pub, soft drinks by Coca Cola and the voluntary labor in setting up and roasting the hog overnight, there is no cost for the meal. All the proceeds from the donations for meals will go to Veterans 913.

New coaster to open at Shepherd of the Hills Submitted to Branson Globe The Shepherd of the Hills Farm and Adventure Park announces the grand opening and ribbon cutting on Thursday, June 24, for its new Copperhead Mountain Coaster. A Father’s Day tribute to ‘Father Osmond,’ a father’s father

A lot has changed since then; however, its message of a son’s love for his father, and a father’s for his children, is timeless. Happy Father’s Day! When I thought of interviewing a Branson entertainer about their father in honor of Father’s Day, the first thing that came to mind was talking to Jimmy Osmond about his dad, George. I saw my first Osmond Brothers’ show about 25 years ago. As they introduced their mother and father to the audience, I was impressed with the obvious affection and respect they had for their parents.

At intermission, I met George for the first time. I asked him, “Amid all of their fame, how have you have managed to engender this type of respect and honor?”

That question led to a relationship that I will cherish for eternity. The answer to that question will be evident in the responses that follow.

Jimmy Osmond took time from his busy schedule for an interview about his father. He shared some

thoughts and remembrances about what an amazing father he had and his influence on his career, his life and that of the Osmond family.

The interview was conducted by the Ole Seagull (TOSG) with Jimmy (JO), using a “Q & A” format.

Its purpose was to honor fathers on Father’s Day by sharing an example of a father who truly exemplified the highest standards of what “fatherhood” means.

TOSG: What one word describes what your father meant to you?

JO: Integrity.

TOSG: Why that word?

JO: That’s what he stood for in everything he did. I never saw my dad swear in all my years, and I never saw him take a drink. He would say, “Choose the right, and let the consequence follow.” And he did. He was always honest in his business dealings even when there was an easier way.

TOSG: What is the one thing your father said to you that has had the most influence on your life?

JO: “Pour it on, son.” Whenever I think about my daddy, I think about “pour it on,” which meant “give it your all and keep going.”

I remember so many times when I did not want to keep going, and I’d have that in the back of my brain, “Pour it on.” Even when we buried my dad, all I could feel was him saying, “Pour it on.”

TOSG: What’s your fondest memory of something you and

your dad shared privately?

JO: I can “yodel whistle” as could my dad. We had a ranch, and since I was the youngest, I always had to go with him to the ranch. As we traveled to and from the ranch, we would whistle all the way up there and all the way back. Every night before we went to bed, he would say his prayers with me and count his blessings, which was each one of his kids.

He would say, “I am only as strong as my weakest child,” which was pretty cool.

TOSG: What was one of his characteristics that you admired the most?

JO: How he loved us all the same.

TOSG: What’s your fondest memory of something your whole family shared with your father?

JO: I think the best times ended up being the hardest times.

We had a saying, “Tragedy plus time equals humor, and we’d laugh about it someday.” We went through a lot of hard times, and I look back now on how he was able to be stoic in those moments and pull us together. We do laugh at those struggles because when our mettle has been tested, it’s been the best of times.

TOSG: What was one of the most important things he taught you?

JO: He was an amazing man.

He didn’t teach me how to live; he showed me how to live.

TOSG: You guys were famous

at a relatively young age. How did he help keep things in perspective from a family point of view?

JO: It was always, “One for all.”

It didn’t make any difference who was out front as long as it was an Osmond, and we were to support each other. We had a career that wasn’t as narcissistic as that of a lot of people in show business because we were part of a team, and it wasn’t just about us individually.

I was the first one in our family to record and have a hit record. I remember going to my dad and saying, “Hey dad, I’m number one, I have a Gold Record. Isn’t that cool?” We owned an apartment complex at the time. He looked at me and handed me a stick with a poker on the end of it, and said, “Go pick up the trash, son. Do something valuable.” You’d think that was hard, but he always had a way of keeping me in perspective.

Jimmy pointed out that they always prayed before every show because his dad wanted them to keep the right perspective. He said, “We always felt when we were on stage that we had a responsibility to not only entertain people and give them their money’s worth but to bring God into our productions and to realize where we get our blessings from. Father always had a mission about him. It wasn’t necessarily to preach our religion but just to share Christianity, love and family.”

Reflections: We all need a good word

LETTER TO THE EDITOR To All Branson Residents Please be aware of the proposed ordinances that council is trying to pass regarding dogs and cats: Making it illegal to feed feral cats.

They think if they aren’t fed, they will go elsewhere for food.

Where? In other words, letting them starve. This is very cruel.

I have made the offer to council that if they can provide transport, I will get four to eight a month spayed at SAAF at no charge to Branson. Once you have the cats spayed in a feral cat colony, they no longer populate and they pose no problem. But someone must feed daily. This is a great offer for the city of Branson. Why do I care – simply because I don’t want any animal to starve.

It is almost impossible to enforce a cat license. Does Branson want every cat walking down the street impounded? They have neither the manpower or resources to do this, but it would mean some picked up and taken to already full animal shelters or simply euthanized. You cannot control a cat like you can a dog. I hate to see a

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer My daily Bible reading includes the Proverbs 31 devotionals, which study a specific book on weekdays, and then Psalms or Proverbs on weekends. Last Sunday I landed on a timely scripture from Proverbs 12, “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad” (v. 25).

Some people just seem to become anxious easily. These people wake up hearing a creaking sound and wonder about the safety of the beams in their house; obsess over the oil change sticker because their car engine might blow up; imagine their kid capsizing and never returning from the Boy Scout canoe trip; and turn around 50 miles into a vacation to check the locks or ther-

fee imposed on either as I know the result would be euthanasia for some cats and dogs.

If you feel as I do, please contact me. I need to get enough Branson residents to contact their council person and speak out against this as soon as possible. There are two council persons that agree with me. The others don’t respond or won’t give answers.

As I understand it, any revenue (however meager) derived from license goes to the police department, not animal control. This seems strange.

I served on a task force in Springfield, and we collected data and stats from all across the U.S. and Canada. The end result was that it is rare for any community to impose a cat license. Those that imposed a dog license found low compliance. There is a high rate of poverty in Branson, and many owners simply can’t afford it.

There is also the Hancock Amendment that went into effect some years back. At the time, voters were told if they passed a certain sales tax, there would be no fees imposed unless adequate SEE LETTER, PAGE 10

mostat. And don’t even mention technological monitoring; hackers love those things! (Ask me how I know people worry about this stuff.)

Then there are the folks who can walk right past undone work, and deal with a funny noise in the car by turning up the stereo. Their goto response is, “No problem, it’ll be fine, don’t worry.” And frequently, these two different kinds of folks become friends, land on the same project team at work, or marry each other. (Ask me how I know this as well.)

A little caution is healthy, and the second type of people usually learn that at some point. But overdoing the worry can lead to anxiety, and Proverbs is exactly right, anxiety

can lead to depression. What about “A good word makes it glad,” though? Trust me, just telling someone not to worry is not usually a good word. Nine times out of 10, a good word won’t be found by scrolling through social media or, except for occasional feel-good stories, watching the news.

A trusted friend who understands how anxiety works can provide a good word, which is exactly why we all need community and even upbeat people sorely missed it during pandemic lockdowns. But a good word that never fails is God’s Word, the Bible.

Caution: Although people occasionally find encouragement by just flipping through the Bible and landing on the right verse, that

doesn’t always work. It can even make things worse if a particular verse doesn’t ring true for you at the moment. Consistency is key— time spent learning the bigger story of the Bible, God’s plan for ultimate redemption, and how he has worked through imperfect people to accomplish his will.

There is practical stuff in the Bible as well, which personally helps me make better decisions as to which concerns actually merit more attention. There’s no shame in seeing a doctor or a counselor, and we shouldn’t hesitate to use those resources when necessary.

But let’s not neglect the true source of comfort. God’s Word is that good word we all need to make our hearts glad.

Having a cave experience

By Tiffany Brown, Staff Writer Have life situations ever made you feel like running away and hiding in a cave? Ever prayed fervently for healing or answers that never came? Then King David would have related to you well.

Literally.

“So David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam.” 1 Samuel 22:1 “David had bottomed out. In a downward swirl of events, he lost his job, his wife, his home, his counselor, his closest friend, and finally his self-respect… He had no security, he had no food, he had no one to talk to, and he had no hope that anything would ever change. He was alone in a dark cave, away from everything and everybody he loved. Everybody except God.” (Charles Swindoll, David: A Man of Passion and Destiny) Psalm 142 depicts the thoughts of David while in the cave: A Contemplation of David. A prayer when he was in the cave.

I cry out to the Lord with my voice; with my voice to the Lord I make my supplication. I pour

out my complaint before Him. I declare before Him my trouble.

When my spirit faints within me, you know my path! In the way in which I walk they have secretly set a snare for me. Look on my right hand and see, for there is no one who acknowledges me. Refuge has failed me. No one cares for my soul. I cry to you, O Lord. I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.” Attend to my cry, for I am brought very low.

Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are stronger than I. Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise Your name. The righteous shall surround me, for You shall deal bountifully with me.

Here we see that David does not neglect to tell God what he believes is true of his current situation. He’s not afraid to admit to God that he’s overwhelmed. But David doesn’t leave it at that. He then begins to speak truth over his situation: You know my path. You are my refuge. You are my portion. You shall deal bountifully with me.

The despair that David felt did not make him any less a man after

God’s own heart. In fact, it was David’s response to the despair that made him worthy of his future kingship over God’s people.

God is not afraid to hear our thoughts and emotions about life. It doesn’t even make him mad. But as we struggle to find answers to our questions, let us not forget the greatness of the God to whom we pray. He knows your path. He is your refuge. He is your portion. He will deal bountifully with you!

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Branson High School athlete Cali Essick just completed a highly successful track season for her junior year, but she’s not slowing down for the summer.

Essick is the Missouri State High School Athletic Association 2021 state champion in the triple jump and placed second at state in the long jump. She also made a strong showing in the 200 meters. Essick currently holds the Branson High School record in the 100, 200, triple jump, and long jump.

Essick also recently completed in district Amateur Athletic Union competition in Hays,

Kansas, where she set a new AAU long jump record for her age group with a 20’4” jump.

Cali’s dad, Chris Essick, said her jump would have actually broken the school record of the host college. Following that performance, Cali received full scholarship offers from Kentucky and Penn State.

Chris Essick, an All-American college athlete who now teaches and coaches at Reeds Spring, said his daughter grew up around sports since he is a coach. She showed early aptitude and enjoyment of track and field, but he doesn’t underestimate the hard work she puts

in running and training at 417 CrossFit. Like many young athletes, Cali was disappointed at missing the 2020 high school season, her sophomore year, due to COVID-19 precautions. She was able to use her freshman numbers to qualify for the only remaining event that could be held, the National AAU Championship in Florida, since it was not a state with heavy lockdowns. “We drove 17 hours for that,” recalls Chris. It was worth it; Cali was last year’s national long jump champion in the 15–16 age group.

Cali is looking forward to her senior season in high school next year, hopefully with more scholarship offers to consider, but there’s more yet to do in the Amateur Athletic Union this summer. Competing this year in the 17–18 AAU age group, Cali’s win at Hays qualifies her for regionals, June 24–26 in Bentonville, Arkansas, and she hopes to again compete at the national meet, which will be held in Humble, Texas, this year.

trapping was still underway following further sightings. One dog is being kept by the homeowner who found it, and four had gone to rescues at press time. Area rescue facilities including For the Love of Canines, HFLCS, Shepherd of the Hills, and Rescue One are helping with efforts to find foster or forever homes for the dogs.

Since the story aired last week on KY3 and other news stations, volunteers have been helping at the Taney County shelter. Some of the Chihuahuas need help learning to interact with humans without fear; some had eye issues needing medical care; and all needed bathing and treatment for tick infestations and other skin irritations.

Taney County Animal Control Manager Sherry Simpson said it is uncertain whether the dogs were dumped by an irresponsible unlicensed breeder or if perhaps an individual owned them and became overwhelmed. Sometimes, people start out with good intentions but are unable to afford spaying and neutering or proper accommodations and the prob-

lem just spirals from there; other times, someone loses their home or the primary owner of the pets has died.

Branson police are investigating the case as animal abuse and abandonment, and ask anyone with any information to contact Taney County Animal Control or the Branson Police Department.

“If you happen to know of someone that had a large number of chihuahuas, but now they have none, we would love for you to contact the Taney County Animal Shelter or Taney County Animal Control or the Branson Police Department Animal Control,” said Lieutenant E.J. Jones.

Simpson said she is grateful for the volunteers who have stepped up to help and for the donations that have been brought in, but more volunteers are welcomed as it will be some time before numbers return to normal. In addition to food and treats, the shelter can use gloves, pee pads and cleaning supplies. Did Jim Barber really play ‘She’s Got Bad Breath’?

Submitted to Branson Globe Yes, and you can hear other hit recordings by James Marvell, associate producer @ The ALG Gospel TV Network, on Jim Barber’s radio show ‘The Barbershop’ on KCAX Branson4u.com where Jim plays the classics of the 60s, 70s & 80s.

Around 1967 James Marvell & Buddy Good (aka The Skopes) recorded a novelty tune written by their manager John Centinaro & Marvell titled “She’s Got Bad Breath.” The Buckingham’s manager, Carl Bonafede helped

Marvell’s band get a deal on the USA label from Chicago. The Skopes were becoming a national hit when suddenly the song got banned! Rumor has it Scope Mouthwash was behind their song being stopped though the group spelled the name differently.

In the late 60s James Marvell became part of the Pop band Mercy and recorded the solid gold classic “Love Can Make You Happy” with Mercy. Mercy topped Billboard in June of 1969 second to the Beatles’ “Get Back”.

Later, In 1970, Marvell left the stardom of Rock and Roll to pursue his original love of Country Music. He formed the trendsetting duo Country Cavaleers with Buddy Good. They are still seen on RFD TV from re-runs of TV Shows which they filmed in Nashville during the early 70s.

In 1991 Willie Nelson brought Marvell to Branson, Willie gave him the run of his Ozark Theater to promote Theater Worship services. That history will be part of a BDS Documentary from stories being written by Branson Legend

Money and supplies raised by local business for Taney County Animal Control

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer A local business held a benefit for the Taney County Animal Control recently. The Flea Hag was the site of the fundraiser, raising money and collecting pet food and needed items for the local animal shelter.

Many were on hand for the day’s celebration, which included sales, raffles, giveaways, barbeque sandwiches from Boss Hoggs BBQ and more.

Adoptable animals, including playful kittens and excited dogs from the Taney County Animal

Control, were a hit with all in attendance.

Teresa Bangma, owner of The Flea Hag, noted, “I am so grateful our community came together to support the TCAC. We were able to donate a truckload of food and supplies, as well as a check for $360.”

Originally scheduled as an anniversary celebration for the Flea Hag kitty, Maggie’s adoption, the benefit was turned into a memorial after Maggie recently passed away.

lasting impression, and her memory will live on in an annual benefit for the TCAC,” explained Bangma.

“The staff at TCAC is very friendly and helpful in helping people find their ‘fur-ever’ friends,” Bangma continued. “Their mission is to provide quality animal care and control services. Their Face-

book page is a forum they use to report lost and found animals, and they post pictures of the animals available as well as those that get an adoption day. The new Flea Hag kitty, Miss Aprilmae, came from the TCAC, and she is working out fabulously. She went straight to work on her first day!”

ashamed about going to school, or even wonder how they will keep warm. Jeans for Teens helps take a little burden off of the families and affords the teens in our area an opportunity to proudly walk into school in a new pair of jeans, with one less thing on their minds.

Founded by Gerrie Moore, the charity evolved from an experience in Moore’s youth where she felt socially awkward at school due to her clothing. A caring teacher took notice and bought Moore new jeans, which boosted her confidence and made her feel more accepted. After much thought and prayer, Moore partnered with the First Baptist Church of Forsyth and their backpack program to begin providing students, who might not have the means to buy their own, with a new pair of jeans to start the school year. Moore opted for jeans because they can be worn multiple times without washing and are made of highly durable material. Moore and her team now work with school counselors in Hollister, Branson, Bradleyville and Kirbyville, and have helped

more than 100 students with a new pair of jeans.

According to Rose Backlin, local realtor and a member of the Jeans for Teens Board of Directors, teens are provided with a voucher for up to $25 to pay for a pair of jeans. The organization has partnered with businesses to provide a shopping experience for the youth. Local shopping partners have allowed for special pricing to keep within that price point for the annual event. Any area Taney County student in grades 7 through 12 can apply to participate in the program.

Jeans for Teens has a dedicated board of directors, as well as a host of volunteers, all of whom have a heart for children, but could always use more.

“We would love to have more volunteers,” said Backlin. “We have fundraising events year round for our annual event and would love assistance with fundraising and our annual shopping event.”

What’s that smell?

By Stephanie Barney, Owner, Lightspeed Electric Your nose can be your greatest asset to identifying electrical issues before they cause a fire. Loose connections, overloading and aging are all culprits in overheated electrical components. Today, let’s look at what actually happens and how to identify and prevent it.

When electrical components like breakers, outlets and wiring overheat, the chemicals and plastic they are made of release a distinctive odor.

This is often described as a metallic, plastic or fishy smell.

Overheating can happen when too many appliances are on a circuit drawing more power than the wire was intended to handle (an overload).

Also, loose connections between components can cause ‘arcing.’ An arc is a situation that occurs when electricity jumps from one conductive surface to another. During an electrical arc, the ionized air between the two surfaces has a high electric conductivity which can produce heat up to 35,000 degrees! This explains how a seemingly insignificant loose connection can start a fire.

Forsyth Library announces summer reading program

By Cindy Thomas, Staff Writer Forsyth Library has started its summer reading program, “My Book and Me,” to continue through August 13.

It’s not too late to sign up; age groups are ages 5-6, 7-9, and 10-12.

Each participating child will receive a new book, and there will be different challenges with prizes for the top three

readers in each group. A short, easy book report will be required for each book read, and a Summer Round Up party will be held at the conclusion of the program, with details to be announced to participants.

Cars Against Cancer helps some realize their dreams

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer A weekend event in Branson raised money for those suffering with cancer.

Cars Against Cancer was a fun-filled two-day festival held at

Branson’s Treasure Lake Resort.

Organized by David Aldridge, Cars Against Cancer featured music from four different bands, numerous booths with jewelry, t-shirts and other items for sale,

food and beverages, and a car show with a variety of specialty cars and motorcycles on display.

All of the money raised from Branson’s Cars Against Cancer event will benefit Aldridge’s

nonprofit organization, My Final Chapter, which helps people with terminal cancer live out their final dreams. For more information on My Final Chapter, you can find them on Facebook,

Resale shop and flea market open in Highland Center, Hollister

By K.D. Michaels, Staff Writer Hollister recently became the home of a new business. Owned and operated by Patrisha Mills, with help from her husband Bill, Tot’s Spot Resale Shop and Mini Flea Market is located in the Highland Center.

“I take new and gently used items and resell them at an affordable price,” explained Patrisha, of her store. “I have always been against wasting things that still have a use. I was raised by older parents. You didn’t throw things out. You reused it or found someone who could use it. “ On the resale side of Mills’ shop, she specializes in the harderto-find clothing.

“We have men’s clothing in all sizes, maternity clothes, and plus-size women’s clothing from sizes 16W to 7XL,” Mills noted.

“We also have children’s clothing, ranging from newborn sizes to clothing for teenagers and young adults.”

Across the hall from the resale shop is a small flea market, filled with unique finds. Said Mills, “We have knick knacks, oddities and

goodies galore. Our vendors are asked to rotate their stock every month to help keep it fresh and appealing to look at.”

Owning a resale shop has always been a dream for Patrisha.

“I went to school to be an auto body technician. I also went to school to be a funeral home assistant,” Mills explained. “But, this is a dream I have had since I was little.”

Mills’ husband Bill, who helps in the flea market side of the business added, “Her dream was always to have a kids’ clothing store, and we had the opportunity to do it, so she’s living her dream.”

Bill, who works full time for the Branson School District, helps Patrisha on the weekends. One of the things he specializes in is coins, primarily coin sets.

adult kids, commemorating special years in their lives. We have everything from 1959 to 2020.”

Patrisha, who hails from Nebraska, has been in the area for 30 years, originally moving to the Ozarks to get a job in an auto body shop. Although no longer working in that field, Patrisha still enjoys working with cars and has a 1966 Ford Falcon station wagon that she hopes to restore one day.

When not busy with their work, Patrisha and Bill, who is originally from Illinois, spend time with their large family.

“Together, we have six kids,” said Patisha. “Two are his, three

are mine and one is ours. They range from 30 years old down to seven!”

College of the Ozarks asks appeals court to halt Biden order that opens dorms, showers to opposite sex Submitted to Branson Globe Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys representing College of the Ozarks asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit on Friday, June 11, 2021, to halt a Biden administration directive that would force the private Christian college to open up its sex-specific dorms and showers to members of the opposite sex. The request for the injunction while the case proceeds comes after a district court declined to issue one and dismissed the case.

“We will not let a radical executive order or agency directive strip us of our core religious values and force us to allow members of the opposite sex to infiltrate our women’s dorms and showers,” said College of the Ozarks President Jerry C. Davis. “This was done without any input by Congress or the public. The Biden administration overstepped the boundaries of our constitutionally protected religious freedoms.”

“It’s entirely inappropriate — as well as unconstitutional — for the government to force private religious schools to open girls’ dorm rooms to males or vice-versa,” said ADF Senior Counsel Julie Marie Blake. “President Biden is punishing religious schools, organizations and churches simply because of their beliefs about marriage and biological sex.

Schools like College of the Ozarks are free to follow the faith tradition they represent.

That’s why we are asking the 8th Circuit to halt enforcement of this unconstitutional directive while our lawsuit proceeds.”

The suit was filed in federal court on April 15, 2021, against the Biden administration. The lawsuit challenges a directive

from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that forces religious schools to violate their beliefs by opening their dormitories, including dorm rooms and shared shower spaces, to members of the opposite sex.

The directive accomplishes this by requiring entities covered by the Fair Housing Act to not “discriminate” based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

The administration’s rule change forces religious schools to violate their beliefs by opening up female dorms to biological males and male dorms to biological females, or face fines of up to six figures, punitive damages, and attorney fees. HUD’s reinterpretation of “sex” in the Fair Housing Act comes in light of President Biden’s executive order titled, “Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation,” signed in January 2021.

The lawsuit, The School of the Ozarks d/b/a College of the Ozarks v. Biden, opposes the HUD directive and the executive order requiring it.

The order, issued to all federal agencies, requires them to modify their policies on sex discrimination to include sexual orientation and gender identity. The lawsuit explains that the HUD directive contradicts the historical judicial interpretation of the Fair Housing Act, which confirms that “sex” means biological sex. The suit also argues that the directive exceeds the administration’s authority and violates the constitutionally protected freedom of College of the Ozarks and similar religious institutions to operate consistently with their religious beliefs.

Severe blood shortage: Donors needed now to address delays in patient care Submitted to Branson Globe The American Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage as the number of trauma cases, organ transplants and elective surgeries rise – and deplete the nation’s blood inventory. Donors of all blood types – especially type O and those giving platelets – are urged to make an appointment to give as soon as possible to prevent further impact to patients.

Right now, hospitals are responding to an atypically high number of traumas and emergency room visits, as well as overdoses and resulting transplants. In comparison to 2019, the Red Cross has seen demand from trauma centers

climb by 10% in 2021− more than five times the growth of other facilities that provide blood transfusions.

“When seconds count in emergency trauma situations, it’s the blood already on the shelves that can make the difference in lifesaving care,” said Chris Baker, regional donor services executive, of Red Cross Missouri and Arkansas and Southwest/Southeast Illinois Region. “As many people begin to enjoy travel and time with loved ones again this summer, patients are relying on the generosity of donors to help ensure they have access to the treatment they need. Please consider blood donation as a summer activity that can help save lives.”

Patients need the help of the American people. Schedule an appointment to give blood now by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood. org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

In addition to trauma needs, there is a great hospital demand for blood as people who deferred care during the height of the pandemic present with more advanced disease progression, requiring increased blood transfusions. Over the last three months, the Red Cross has distributed about 75,000 more blood products than expected to meet these needs. As a result of this shortage, some hospitals are being forced to slow the pace of elective surgeries until the blood supply stabilizes. Blood is perishable and cannot be stockpiled, so it must constantly be replenished by generous blood donors.

In most cases, those who have received a COVID-19 vaccine can donate. However, knowing the name of the manufacturer of the vaccine they received is important in determining donation eligibility.

As more than a third of Americans have become fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the Red Cross is winding down COVID-19 antibody testing for blood, platelet and plasma donations.

Through June 25, the Red Cross is testing all donations for COVID-19 antibodies. Testing may show possible exposure to the virus or whether a donor has developed an immune response to vaccination. The conclusion of Red Cross antibody testing represents a new, hopeful phase as the nation continues to journey out of this pandemic.

The Red Cross is screening all blood, platelet and plasma donations from self-identified African American donors for the sickle

cell trait. This additional screening will provide Black donors with an additional health insight and help the Red Cross identify compatible blood types more quickly to help patients with sickle cell disease.

Since the best blood match for a patient receiving ongoing transfusions comes from donors of the same genetic background, the Red Cross encourages people of all ethnicities to give blood and help increase the number of diverse donors so we can find the best match for all patients.

Donors can expect to receive antibody test and sickle cell trait screening results, if applicable, within one to two weeks through the Red Cross Blood Donor App and the online donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org.

Ozarks Water Watch: Telling the story of ‘yuck’

For example, the word effluent, [ˈeflo͞ oənt] is a simple noun used in a nice way to refer to liquid waste or sewage discharged into a body of water such as a lake, river or the sea. Let us get real; it’s excrement and many do not think of where it goes.

You just press the handle, and it magically disappears; the problem solved, right? Many people wonder why we are so passionate about what we do. If we did not, who would want to visit this or swim in that? The impacts traverse more than economics and tourism. They also impact health and safety for us and wildlife.

Here is a situation that did not make the headlines – a failing lakefront lagoon that has untreated sewage leaking directly in the lake near a swimming area. Thankfully, we were able to correct this problem. Another example was a new home built on a lakefront lot a few years ago, where they were allowed to connect to the old metal septic tank and lateral system that had untreated efflu-

ent leaking out of the bottom of the tank and flowing from the ledge rock into the lake. The scary reality is, many of these systems are still in operation today and are polluting our water due to age, failure and overuse. This was remedied as well.

Over the years, our efforts to remedy, fix and install environmentally friendly wastewater treatment systems have helped us ensure that we have the best water quality, leading to a booming tourism business and a protected population. Along with the Branson tourism industry, Table Rock Lake and other reservoirs on the White River are responsible for the hundreds of millions of dollars annually pumped into our local economy.
