And all the land was swathed with color is a showcase of recent paintings by acclaimed Ohio artist Mark Gingerich. Known for his remarkable execution of contemporary impressionism, Gingerich continues to expand upon the long tradition of translating landscape into marks of light and color. It is these lyrical landscapes, ranging from snow covered small town streets to Midwestern pastoral scenes to alluring European locales, which provide the artist with an abundance of inspiration.
This exhibition primarily features landscapes from Ohio, France, and Switzerland. As Gingerich travels across the United States and throughout Europe, he approaches each scene through an artists’ lens. Americans have historically been (and continue to be) enamored with European locales, due to their historic charm and cultural significance. Gingerich brilliantly applies the same romantic filter to his rendering of Ohio landscape that is often characteristic of European landscape paintings.
Gingerich treats each view, whether rural Ohio, the French countryside, or a Swiss mountain view, with the same integrity and focus on beauty. In Bernese Alps, he captures an expansive Swiss vista by juxtaposing lush evergreens with a hazy blue background of mountains and sky. In Ohio Homestead, Gingerich achieves harmonious color, though he chooses to employ a very limited palette.
Gingerich was born in West Germany to missionary parents. He spent most of his formative years residing in rural Ohio after his parents returned to the states. He has studied at the Columbus College of Art and Design and the Atelier Du Nord School. Gingerich is a signature member of the American Impressionist society. He recently exhibited at the Salmagundi Club in New York City.
