Mélange, Abstract Invitational on view at Brandt-Roberts Galleries Friday, October 6 - Sunday, November 5

Brandt-Roberts Galleries’ second juried abstract invitational exhibition, Mélange, includes the work of seven artists from across the country. The exhibition includes works from a variety of media, including a large-scale installation. The featured artworks in Mélange possess a duality, both a materiality and immateriality. A more “material” object/artwork can be viewed as being something tangible, whereas something towards the “immaterial” end of the spectrum is more aptly described in terms of physically intangible things like thoughts and feelings. The works in this exhibition create a medley, or mélange, of texture, color, and shape. The highly textured and layered surfaces abound in the work are the end result of an artist’s active and often adventurous process. There appears to be an obsession with the materiality or surface in the compulsive layering of materials, whether it be paint, canvas or paper. The dominant medium in the work is paint; however, hybrids exist between paint and sculptural elements throughout the exhibition. The pieces also serve an immaterial function in that through aesthetic means, they elicit a visceral reaction from the viewer. Though mostly non-objective, the organic shapes and arresting color palettes serve as visual stimuli that remind us of the world around us. Mélange was juried by Laura Lisbon, professor in the Painting and Drawing program of the Department of Art at The Ohio State University. Lisbon holds a MFA from Syracuse University and her paintings exhibit nationally and internationally, including in NYC, England, Holland, and France.

Teri Dryden Louisville, KY Teri Drydenâ€™s unorthodox path to becoming an artist began with immersion in an ancient art form in which she was the medium. A theatre major at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland, she excelled in physical expression and comedy. At the urging of an instructor, she auditioned and won a coveted spot as one of the few female clowns in the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus. For two unforgettable years, she performed in every state in the U.S. in one of the most colorful and visually stimulating environments imaginable. She then moved to Los Angeles and became an award-winning stage actress, but left the stage when her first child was born. After making beautiful fiber art for several years, Teri decided to take an art class, and discovered a latent talent and passion for painting and drawing. During a remarkably short and prolific period, she won several awards and sold dozens of paintings and drawings to rapt fans who recognized her unique sense of composition and color in dramatic florals and stilllifes. She feels she has found her true aesthetic after discovering the fascinating world of abstract painting and collage. She is a member of the Collage Artists of America, National Collage Society and Women Painters West. Her work is included in many private and public collections and has been exhibited in numerous solo, group and juried exhibitions across the country.

Jeffrey Hirst Chicago, IL Jeffrey Hirst has exhibited his work throughout the United States since the early 1990’s. His work has been showcased at national and international venues including the Minneapolis Institute of Art; The Holter Museum, Helena, Montana; McLean Project for the Art, McLean, VA; ARC Gallery, Chicago, IL; McKinney Contemporary, Dallas, TX and Palazzo Dell’ Annunziata, Matera, Italy. He has been a visiting artist at universities around the United States conducting encaustic and printmaking workshops and has taught encaustic classes at Grand Maris Art Colony in MN, The Encaustic Center in TX, LaGrange Art League in IL, and The 6th International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown, MA. Hirst also is the owner of Hirst Printmaking, a Printmaking shop specializing in Intaglio, Screenprinting, and Experimental Approaches towards combining printmaking and encaustic. Hirst received his MFA from Louisiana State University and BFA from the University of Minnesota. He is a recipient of a 2009 Minnesota State Arts Board grant and his work is in numerous public and private collections including Arcstone Technologies, Grant Thornton International, Great River Energy, Southern Graphics Council, and SAP America.

Paula Izydorek Cleveland, OH Paula Izydorek (born 1970 in Michigan) is an American painter who spent her formative years in Southern California and since has lived in several major US cities. She is passionate about her heritage and has traveled to all but three of the states. During her travels Izydorek looks to contemporary painting and the abundant perfection found in nature for continual inspiration. Although she inherently knows the exquisiteness of nature can never be improved upon through the painting process it is her goal to paint homage to its vast heterogeneity of textures, formations and all-encompassing palates. Izydorek is in awe of the fact that nature exist without the need for validation. To achieve such humility as a painter will be her greatest accomplishment. Izydorek received a BFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 1997. Her first solo exhibition Resolution or Evolution: An Intimate Interpretation at Millard Sheets Art Center, Pomona, CA in 2015. Her first catalogue Ingrained was published Fall 2016 with a coinciding solo exhibitions: InTown Gallery, Cleveland, Ohio (2016); City Center Gallery, Columbus, Ohio (2017); 29 Palms Art Gallery, Twentynine Palms, CA (2017 forthcoming); Rosewood Gallery, Kettering, OH (2018 forthcoming). Earlier this year she was featured with painter Jack Reilly in a two person show Boundless Imagination: Abstraction Remixed, Imperial, CA. Izydorek's work is included in CARTA - Cleveland Art Association; and numerous private collections. She is based in Cleveland, Ohio and exhibits throughout the U.S.

Helena Parriott NYC Born 1987, lives and works in New York. Helena Parriott received a BFA with distinction in 2010 from California College of the Arts, in San Francisco, California. Parriott’s work has been shown with galleries and institutions including VICTORI + MO, Brooklyn, NY, Novella Gallery, New York, and Centotto Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, UrbanGlass, Brooklyn, NY, and with ArtSlant, exhibiting in Miami at Aqua Art Fair. Parriott was awarded a fellowship through the Creative Glass Center in Fall of 2016.

Jolene Powell Marietta, OH Jolene Powell is a McCoy Professor of Art and Director of Gallery 310 at Marietta College. Although she lives in the Midwest, she has spent several summers painting the coast of Maine; her fog-saturated residency at the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation generated much of her recent visual inspiration. Ms. Powell received her MFA from Boston University in 2001, and has an extensive exhibition record which includes; 2010 10th Annual American Landscapes, Maryland Federation of Art; Summer Exhibition, Courthouse Gallery, Ellsworth Maine; Monotype Guild of New England, National Show 2010, Fitchburg Art Museum, Fitchburg, Massachusetts; Simplicity and Suspense, at the Narthex Gallery, New York City, Maine As Muse, at Lohin Geduld Gallery, New York City. And in 2015, Jolene Powell: Zephyr Memories, at ENO Gallery, Hillsborough, North Carolina. Prof. Powell spent her fall 2016 sabbatical at the Nes International Artist Residency in Iceland.

Jeremy Rabus St. Louis, MO Jeremy Rabus’s paintings are carefully composed abstract images in which he exploits the effect of tangent brilliant colors, with an occasional seemingly expressionistic swipe of a neutral hue. During the process of making his paintings, Jeremy applies shapes in paint, sometimes organic, sometimes taped off geometrically, and then accumulates multiple layers of paint passages, strategically complementing, enhancing, and concealing certain areas of the painting. He then uses a power sander to grind away at the layers, revealing fascinating shapes and surprising color relationships. The resulting textural effects resemble stone, mist, lava, rivulets, or atmosphere, eventually achieving a “landscape”. As an emerging artist, Jeremy has participated in numerous national group and St. Louis-area solo exhibits. He lives and works in St. Louis, MO.

Samantha Parker Salazar Columbus, OH Samantha Parker Salazar creates site-specific installations and mixed media works on paper. Her exhibition record includes national and international venues as well as public and private collections. Salazar is the recipient of a 2017 ArtPrize Nine Seed Grant, Columbus Arts Festival Emerging Artist Grant, and Greater Columbus Arts Council AITC Grant. She was the 2014-15 John Fergus Fellow at The Ohio State University, where she was a resident artist and lecturer in printmaking. Salazar earned an MFA from The University of Texas at Austin in 2014 and a BFA from Bradley University in 2011. She has taught workshops at Flatbed Press in Austin, TX and Urban Arts Space in Columbus, OH. Her work has been featured in various printmaking journals, podcasts, and noteworthy publications, including Newfound Journal. Recent public projects include a permanent installation for the Courtyard Marriott - Austin, as well as a project for the Columbus BIA Parade of Homes. Forthcoming, Salazar will be installing a permanent project for the main entrance of the Woodbourne-Centerville public library. Salazar is currently a Studio Instructor at The Dayton Art Institute.
