It’s been an exciting year for our college as we continue to see positive results from our name change, including increased visibility. I’m inspired each and every day by the passion and commitment of our students and faculty.

I’m eager to share this issue of Inspire magazine with you, which reflects the life-changing work our people and programs are accomplishing.

The cover features our vibrant aviation program, which is experiencing significant growth. The aviation industry as a whole is booming, and we are diligently working to meet this demand. The program has a rich legacy of excellence and a strong record of alumni success. We are working to ensure OSU is the premier destination for aviation education.

You will also learn about our global initiatives that seek to inspire leadership internationally. Partnerships in Belize are helping expand literacy education there while giving our students international experiences. Collaborative work between OSU and China led to the launch of OSU’s firstever joint center, which provides an international platform for the field of student affairs.

Students are taking science learning outside the classroom as they join Dr. Julie Angle, associate professor of secondary science education, on a domestic travel course to Yellowstone National Park. What better way to learn about earth’s natural processes than through first-hand experience?

In July, Dr. Nathaniel Jenkins, assistant professor in health and human performance, was named the Terry J. Housh Outstanding Young Investigator of the Year by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Within the OSU Applied Neuromuscular Physiology Laboratory, Dr. Jenkins leads a team of graduate students on research projects with significant public health implications.

You will also read about two of our shining young alumnae who are making a big impact in their schools and beyond. Haley Curfman, a second-grade teacher at Blackwell Elementary School, received national attention for promoting kindness in the classroom through creative student projects, including a student-decorated dress.

Sarah Kirk, a 2012 master’s in counseling graduate, was named the Oklahoma School Counselor of the Year by the Oklahoma School Counselor Association. Her studentcentered approach and steadfast commitment to evoke positive change is inspirational. After an extremely challenging year for educators across our state, these stories are an important reminder of why we do what we do.

Two OSU-Tulsa graduate students were named Tulsa Schweitzer Fellows established a mental health hotline for the gay, lesbian and transgender community this summer.

I’m proud of the work being done by these students to improve access to much-needed health services for this underserved population.

We continue to build momentum as we proudly prepare leaders who power a better educated, healthier and more accessible world. I look forward to another successful and impactful year for the College of Education, Health and Aviation. We value your support in carrying out our mission.

“Our aviation program has a strong reputation, and our visibility continues to increase with the recent college name change,” said John Romans, dean of the College of Education, Health and Aviation.

Dating back to 1935, the Civilian Pilot Training program, offered by Oklahoma A&M College and the Stillwater Flying Service under the supervision of the federal government, trained civilians who would eventually become World War II pilots. It’s reported that more pilots from the Oklahoma A&M College program went into the U.S. armed forces than from any other college civilian program in the country, and that no student completing OAMC’s basic training ever “washed out” of the U.S. Army Air Forces.

Today, the OSU aviation program enrolls more than 300 students annually, offering undergraduate degrees in aerospace logistics, aerospace security, aviation management, professional pilot and technical service management. It is also one of only 18 universities in the nation to offer graduate-level aviation degrees.

Within the last five years, overall enrollment in the program has increased nearly 40 percent, with the professional pilot option experiencing almost 50 percent enrollment growth.

The fall 2018 freshman class is nearly double in size over last year’s incoming class. This directly reflects industry demand.

According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), 620,000 pilots will be needed to fly aircraft by 2036. To put that into perspective, that means hiring almost 492,000 new pilots, or 67 per day for the next 20 years.

The ICAO also forecasts a need for 94,000 new air traffic controllers and 1.3 million maintenance professionals.

Now is one of the best times to pursue a career in aviation as airlines work to fill thousands of positions vacated by retiring pilots while demand for air travel increases. According to Boeing Global Services, more than 80,000 pilots are expected to retire within the next 20 years in the U.S. alone. Additionally, the International Air Transport Association predicts that air travel will double over the next 20 years.

“We are excited to meet the demand and secure OSU as a premier choice for aviation education,” Dean Romans said. “We are committed to having the best academic-based aviation program in the country as we proudly prepare outstanding aviators who will make their mark on the industry and the world.”

Upon graduating, professional pilot students will have logged at least 250 flight hours, attained Federal Aviation Administration certifications and completed high-quality aviation related coursework.

“Oklahoma State provided me with the opportunity to get all of my [aviation] ratings here as well as some of the more advanced ratings like certified flight instructor, instrument instructor as well as multi-engine instructor,” said Jared Jacobs, a 2012 OSU graduate and current sales demonstration pilot for Textron Aviation. “All those things allowed me to build [flight] time quickly and get into the workforce much more rapidly.”

However, OSU students earn more than just their wings during their time here; they also earn a four-year degree and have access to an exceptional college experience. The program’s holistic approach allows students to balance time spent perfecting their skills with taking advantage of all OSU has to offer.

“I think that’s one of our biggest selling points — the fact that aviation students are fully immersed in the OSU community,” explained Meredith Shepard, prospective student services coordinator for the College of Education, Health and Aviation. “Students know they are going to receive top-notch, intensive flight training without sacrificing the full college experience.”

Professional pilot students are trained at the OSU Flight Center, located north of the Stillwater Regional Airport. The 29-aircraft fleet includes new Cessna 172 and Piper Seminole multi-engine planes equipped with topof-the-line Garmin G1000 all-glass avionic systems. High-tech simulators like the full-motion, enclosed cockpit RedBird MCX provide enhanced training for aspiring pilots.

“Safely and efficiently accommodating students is our priority,” said Lance Fortney, program manager for the OSU Flight Center. “We are continuously working on upgrades to our facilities, fleet and equipment so our students have a high-quality learning experience.”

Internships and real-world experiences are central to the OSU aviation program. Students enjoy unique opportunities to interact with professional partners through the OSU-Envoy Airlines pipeline program, which gives students early access to employment opportunities while still pursuing their degrees at OSU. “Our culture and program approach is what sets us apart,” said Chad Depperschmidt, associate professor in aviation and space. “I can guarantee our students receive individual attention and cultivate meaningful relationships with peers, faculty and instructors.”

Some aviation enthusiasts flock to OSU because of the historic and nationally recognized Flying Aggies.

Founded in 1948 by former World War II pilot Hoyt Walkup, the student flying club has had swagger from the beginning. Members of the flight team compete at regional and national competitions, including the National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s annual competition. Throughout its 63-year history, the Flying Aggies won the prestigious Loening Trophy 21 times. As the rarest and oldest of all collegiate aviation awards, it’s presented annually to the outstanding all-around program in the nation. With this legacy comes an enormous amount of pride and support from alumni.

“History has shown that pilots and people trained in aviation at OSU are an elite group,” said Steve Roberts, former Flying Aggies adviser. “The reason it carries that status is because of the traditions carried over the years with the Flying Aggies. I guarantee anytime I walk through an airport while I’m wearing a Flying Aggies hat or jacket, I get approached by a former member.

There’s a lot of rich traditions that are carried here.”

Dreams become a reality as students join the Cowboy Family to pursue their passion. Whether they aspire to be pilots, air traffic controllers, airport managers or other aviation professionals, OSU graduates are ready to serve on a global scale.

“Before choosing to come to OSU, I toured numerous schools around the country with great aviation programs,” said Heather Atkinson, a sophomore professional pilot major.

“Oklahoma State stood out to me for many reasons, including its smallschool feel, Big 12 sports, additions to its growing aircraft fleet and clear

path to the airline industry. Along with the friendly community of the OSU aviation program, I have built strong relationships with the aviation faculty and flight instructors. OSU continues to prove that I made the right decision.”

The aviation program is quickly outgrowing its current space and exploring ways to keep up with increased demand. Student experience remains the top priority as the college plans for the future.

“We are strategically planning for enrollment growth, and we are steadfast in our commitment to recruit and retain the next generation of aviators,” Dean Romans said. “Plans are underway for the development of a new aviation complex, which would significantly improve the student learning environment and elevate our national reputation. Our program was born from a proud beginning, and everyone involved wants to see it thrive.” ■

Curfman is a 2015 elementary education graduate who grew up in Blackwell, Oklahoma. She’s in her third year of teaching in the school district she grew up in as a child.

Like many schools, Blackwell Elementary was forced to suspend its art classes due to budget cuts. In 2016, Curfman tumbled on a post showing students drawing on a white dress when she was searching on Pinterest for possible art projects for her students.

“The idea was that it would be the students’ Christmas gift to me,” Curfman said. “The dress was full of Christmas drawings like Santa Claus, presents and snowmen.”

Curfman ended up entering the dress in the Blackwell-Kay County Street Fair, where it won first place in the open art category.

“The kids were so excited to see it up in the building all week with the blue ribbon on it,” Curfman said.

“They got to show their parents and their friends who aren’t in my class.”

After the first success, Curfman decided to bring back the idea for the 2017 school year. Each year, Blackwell Elementary celebrates “Kindness Week” to help teach students how to be caring and compassionate toward one another. This past year, the week fell right around Valentine’s Day. Curfman thought this might be the perfect time to try the project again.

“My only instruction was to draw what makes them happy and to not cross anything out,” Curfman said.

“There were a lot of hearts, puppies and kind words — more cutesy kinds of things this year.”

Curfman then posted a picture of the dress to her Facebook page, which she uses to show her family and friends all of the fun things happening in the classroom. The post went viral — with more than 345,000 shares, it was seen by millions of people.

“I woke up one morning, and I had messages from people all around the world,” Curfman said. “It was really neat to hear from people from different states and overseas about how it brought back memories of their childhood when their teachers would do a similar project.”

The messages were plentiful and full of different stories from different generations. One former teacher told Curfman about how he would let the kids decorate his van in washable paint.

Curfman’s “yes to the dress” is becoming a class tradition, and her current students began the year asking when they would get to participate in the art project.

“Some kids this year had heard about it in the past because they saw it in the fair or their siblings were in my class last year,” Curfman said. “They were really excited.”

Curfman hopes the project continues to grow and make a positive impact on her students. She plans to keep experimenting by changing when the dress gets decorated every year, allowing different lessons to be taught and different drawings to be expressed.

“I think it would be interesting to do one around New Year’s and see what they draw or the differences,” Curfman said. “Dr. Seuss Week would be really cool, too, so they could draw Dr. Seuss things. I have had a few different ideas about when to do the next one.”

In addition to the dress project, Curfman came up with the idea of “kindness shirts” for the students at Blackwell Elementary.

“I print ‘kindness’ across the front of all of the shirts and lay them out around the classroom,” Curfman said. “The kids then go around the room and write kind things on each other’s shirts.”

The “kindness shirts” weren’t just an activity in Curfman’s classroom this year. All of the second-grade teachers at Blackwell Elementary loved the idea and asked her if she would make shirts for their classes to participate as well.

“I made all of the shirts for them, and they turned into our field trip shirts,” Curfman said. “When we went on field trips, we told all of the kids to wear their shirts. In a way, we were spreading kindness everywhere we went.”

In addition to spreading kindness, Curfman likes to use these projects to help her students find what they are passionate about. It’s an important opportunity in a school no longer able to fund art education.

“Blackwell doesn’t have an art class, so being able to do that in the school was such a creative outlet for kids who don’t otherwise get to do that in school,” Curfman said. “I have had some amazing illustrators in my classroom who, if I wouldn’t let them do projects like that, they wouldn’t get the opportunity.”

Opportunities for her students were one of the many things Curfman and her colleagues were fighting for when they participated in the Oklahoma teacher walkout in April. Blackwell schools were closed for two weeks, and Curfman said she went to the Capitol all but two days.

“We were down there for 16-hour days,” Curfman said. “We would leave at 4 or 5 in the morning and wouldn’t get home until almost 11. Then, we would get up and do it again the next day.”

“The support we had from the community and surrounding communities was amazing,” Curfman said. “Still to this day, we hear parents say thank you for fighting for their child’s education. It’s really amazing to know I work in a community that is going to give back 100 percent.”

The common themes of kindness, support and pride run deep in Curfman’s classroom and beyond from dresses to shirts to even walkouts.

“I really want to help the kids and give them different ways to be kind to each other,” Curfman said. “Kindness doesn’t have to be just one week out of the year.” ■

‘I Keep Going’

School counselor cites students’ needs for her motivation DESPITE AN EXTREMELY CHALLENGING YEAR FOR EDUCATORS ACROSS THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA, SARAH KIRK CONTINUES TO PUT HER STUDENTS’ NEEDS FIRST. WITHIN THEIR YOUTHFUL EYES, SHE FINDS THE MOTIVATION AND INSPIRATION TO MOVE FORWARD.

“I just look at them, and I keep going,” said Kirk, a two-time Oklahoma State University graduate and current school counselor at Monroe Elementary School in Norman, Oklahoma.

Kirk has been at Monroe since earning her master’s in counseling from the OSU College of Education, Health and Aviation in 2012. She hit the ground running there, and her efforts have not gone unnoticed. In May, Kirk was named as the Oklahoma School Counselor of the Year for 201819 by the Oklahoma School Counselor Association.

However, the honor came on the cusp of what Kirk describes as the worst week of her career — the teacher walkout.

“It was tough,” she recalled. “There was a lot of heartache out there. The hardest part was feeling like these people [legislators] weren’t making

choices that were best for our kids, and that’s tough because as an educator, we make thousands of decisions every single day and every one of those is based on what’s best for our kids.”

That resolve has driven Kirk to be more collaborative and innovative as she advocates for students.

TEAM EFFORT The life of a school counselor is extremely diverse; no two days are ever the same. Primarily, counselors focus on students' social, emotional, academic and career development. They also provide responsive services to students, such as crisis or behavioral intervention; connecting families to community resources; and offering classroom guidance. Their role is pivotal to student development.

Shortly after arriving at Monroe Elementary, Kirk realized it was going to take more than the efforts of one counselor to meet the intensive needs of her 480 students, a studentto-counselor ratio nearly double the recommended 250 to 1 by the National School Counselor Association. Kirk had big dreams, and she knew that creating a culture of shared responsibility and implementing comprehensive programming would be crucial to achieving her goals.

“My principal and I have worked over the last six to seven years to create a climate in our school where the more traditional role of guidance counselor is assumed by every adult in our building, so that collectively we are teaching our kids about respect, cooperation and excellence,” Kirk said. “We’ve worked hard to create supports, interventions and programming beyond what just a single person can do.”

RESPONDING TO THE NEED “What do our students need?

What’s missing?” Kirk and her team ask those questions on a regular basis. The answers would have a profound impact on Monroe students as well as students across Oklahoma when Kirk introduced the Great Kindness challenge to her school, and the state, in 2014. Kirk adopted the initiative from a group of California parents who recognized the same need in their schools.

The weeklong celebration to empower students to create a culture of kindness met an overwhelmingly positive response from teachers, students and parents. Whether completing acts of kindness, sharing stories or participating in encouraging activities, the students connected with the concept, and it soon became more than just a week.

What initially began as a small grassroots effort in California now includes nearly 20,000 schools, reaching over 10 million students in over 100 countries.

One week of kindness just wasn’t enough: In 2015, Kirk assembled the Monroe Elementary Kindness Ambassadors, a group of students who meet after school to promote kindness in their classrooms on a regular basis.

After its first year, the group grew from 30 to 150 students. One notable project that has come out of the group is the buddy bench. The Kindness Ambassadors raised money to build a special bench on the playground, intentionally designed as a place for students to sit if they need a friend to play with or someone to talk to.

“The concept is positive and not punitive; it’s teaching kids what to do, as opposed to what not to do,” Kirk emphasized.

She went on to build a mentor program for students with more intensive needs. She saw that many of her students did not have a healthy adult role model in their life. With the help of a local church group, Kirk paired 25 students with 25 selected adult mentors. The mentors provide stability, support and encouragement to students by instilling the importance of making good decisions and helping them achieve their goals.

THE TIME IS NOW As Kirk and her team continue to look for new ways to meet students’ needs, the funding to support programs and positions remains a primary cause for concern, especially for school counselors whose positions are among the first to be cut when budget crises arise.

“The number one question I get asked is, why does an elementary school need a counselor?” Kirk said. “On a very frequent basis, I’m dealing with students who suffer from depression and anxiety, self-harm, suicidal ideation and violence.

These are real issues we are dealing with. I can’t imagine there not being someone in these schools to support these students and connect them to the resources and help they need.”

The drive to do what’s best for her kids led Kirk and nearly 40,000 educators across Oklahoma to walk out of the classroom on April 2. Their message was clear: Oklahoma must find a way to fund public education and ensure students a brighter future.

For nine days, teachers, students, parents and residents gathered at the state Capitol to advocate for public education.

“It was powerful to see that,” she said.

The days were long and frustrations were high as thousands of educators sought answers. However, after nearly two weeks, the walkout came to an end when it was clear the Legislature

would not make a significant movement toward solving the funding issues.

“I wish it had resulted differently,” Kirk reflected. “It was tough to know we were going to come back to 480 faces and say, ‘We tried really hard, but we didn’t win.’ It felt defeating for sure.

But at the same time, it was neat to see thousands of educators coming together for what they thought was right.”

The movement didn’t end once class was back in session. The conversation continued, and educators remained steadfast in their quest to be heard.

Civic engagement would become the new platform for change as educators across the state exercised their right to vote and chose to be active participants in Oklahoma’s legislative processes.

According to the state election board, voter turnout for Oklahoma’s June primary election surpassed the turnout for the 2014 general election and the 2016 presidential primary election.

“The walkout has forced people to face what’s happening in public education,” Kirk said. “It has forced people to see that we have to make

a change. There’s no other option at this point. We are losing amazing educators.”

THE BIG PICTURE Kirk became a counselor because she knew the impact she could have on students. That’s also the reason she stays.

“The level of respect for the job may have decreased and the salary may not have increased, but the need is still there,” she said. “I want young people who are considering education as a profession to see they are so needed and they can make a huge difference.”

Making a difference is what drives the OSU College of Education, Health and Aviation to continue to prepare educators like Kirk, who are equipped and committed to improving the lives of students by dreaming big.

“I want to grow my reach,” Kirk emphasized. “I don’t know what that looks like exactly, but I have a desire to get other people doing what I’m doing.

I want to educate others on how they can most effectively impact their school. I want all of our kids to receive the services and support they need.” ■

THE BIG PICTURE Kirk became a counselor because she knew the impact she could have on students. That’s also the reason she stays.

“The level of respect for the job may have decreased and the salary may not have increased, but the need is still there,” she said. “I want young people who are considering education as a profession to see they are so needed and they can make a huge difference.”

Making a difference is what drives the OSU College of Education, Health and Aviation to continue to prepare educators like Kirk, who are equipped and committed to improving the lives of students by dreaming big.

“I want to grow my reach,” Kirk emphasized. “I don’t know what that looks like exactly, but I have a desire to get other people doing what I’m doing.

I want to educate others on how they can most effectively impact their school. I want all of our kids to receive the services and support they need.” ■

BELIZE LITERACY

What began as a spring break study abroad trip has evolved into a collaborative effort to strengthen literacy education in Belize.

Since 2007, Dr. Jenn Sanders, head of the School of Teaching, Learning and Educational Sciences, has led an annual international perspectives in literacy study abroad course in Belize.

Education students spend a week co-teaching and providing support for Belizean educators on how to teach literacy through in-class demonstrations, professional development workshops and lesson planning.

The literacy education focus is a directive from the Belizean Ministry of Education (MOE) and its chief education officer, Carol Babb. As one of the highest-ranking members of the MOE, Babb supports national literacy programs to increase literacy rates and implements school improvement plans to increase the quality of education.

Babb’s connection to OSU began in 2007 when she joined the College of Education, Health and Aviation’s Belizean doctoral cohort. The program was designed to meet the need for an advanced degree option in higher education that was otherwise unavailable for Belizean students.

Members of the MOE, including Babb, recently traveled to OSU to discuss how to develop and sustain teacher leaders within literacy education in Belize.

“They don’t currently have the educational opportunities to be literacy experts,” Sanders explained. “We are looking at what can we do to develop the teacher educator’s expertise in literacy so they can train their own teachers in good literacy practices. What can we provide them in terms of ongoing coursework, professional development or academic programs? The ultimate goal is to make sure the initiatives are sustainable.”

As the group tackles these questions and works toward solutions, EHA students have a front-row seat. They can build international connections and form meaningful relationships that profoundly impact their world view.

“These students are all going to be teachers, so for them to travel abroad and work with people who look and speak differently than them, it’s incredibly important,” Sanders said. “Some of them have never been exposed to ethnic diversity ... It’s a good experience for them to be outside their comfort zone and for them to be the learner. It makes them look, see and appreciate things in a very different way.”

CHINA PARTNERSHIP

Literacy education isn’t the only program placing value on international experiences; the higher education and student affairs (HESA) program agrees that the best type of learning is achieved by learning from others, and it’s doing everything possible to expose its students to international leadership.

“The program brings administrators together to discuss student affairs theory and practice and helps create a bridge between U.S. and Chinese universities,” said Dr. Vivian Wang, manager of China programs and development at OSU. “We are able to showcase OSU to Chinese academic institutions. It’s a practical way to share the knowledge we have with the world, which is important to OSU’s land-grant mission.”

LOOKING AHEAD

In addition to Belize and China, the college looks forward to strengthening and expanding existing partnerships with Dong Nai University in Vietnam and Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla in Mexico. Regardless of what the future holds, the College of Education, Health and Aviation is committed to cultivating global connections and fulfilling its mission to improve the lives of people in Oklahoma, the nation and the world.

“It’s our ethical responsibility,” Sanders said. “When you learn and know certain things, when you have the opportunity to be educated and have certain experiences, it’s your job to give back and let others have those opportunities and experiences as well.

As an educator and as a university, it’s our job to be involved in global learning and to facilitate opportunities to learn from each other, both domestically and abroad.” ■

Unique lab space generates conversations and ideas

T

he College of Education, Health and Aviation is home to the Emerging Technologies and Creativity Research lab, which offers a unique learning space for all students, faculty and staff. The lab encourages exploration of innovative, creative and imaginative ways to improve research, teaching and learning with emerging technologies.

The lab was originally introduced in 2013 by EHA faculty member Dr. Susan Stansberry as the Transforming Education through Creative Habits (T.E.C.H.) Playground. Over the past five years, the lab has grown and evolved.

The new name, Emerging Technologies and Creativity Research Lab, better identifies its mission and purpose. Dr. Tutaleni Asino, assistant professor in educational technology, now oversees the lab.

Visitors are instantly immersed in a creative space filled with top-of-the-line technology, including a flight simulator, 3D printing machine, mixed reality teaching simulator, treadmill desk, robots and numerous other gadgets. The goal is for students to look for creative solutions to transform education using these resources.

“Research around creativity is growing, but it still has a ways to go,” said Asino. “There are not many creativity labs, and for us to have one in the college is very special. It’s a place where we can come and feel empowered to explore and discuss solutions.”

As director, Asino focuses on promoting the lab as a destination for multi- and interdisciplinary research and encourages those within the college to take advantage of the opportunities it provides. The lab is open daily

and available to anyone interested in exploring emerging technologies, multidisciplinary research or collaborating on creative projects.

“We are always looking for more collaboration and engagement with students as well as faculty,” said Asino.

“For us it is really simple; we would like to see more people come and visit the lab and learn about what’s there. Being in the space generates conversations and spurs creative ideas, which we hope can translate into collaborative research and projects.” ■

Faculty mentorship inspires the next generation of researchers

ignificant progress in health research is being made within the College of Education, Health and Aviation, with Dr. Nate Jenkins, assistant professor in health and human performance, leading a team of graduate students on research projects with very practical implications.

“I believe in the research,” Jenkins said.

“It could have a substantial public health impact; I really do believe that. If you look at the state of Oklahoma, when it comes to health we are pretty much dead last in almost everything.

Whether it’s obesity rates, diabetes rates or adverse childhood experiences, we are 50 out of 50, or close to it. There is a significant chance to have an impact on people in the state by studying the effects of these issues and ways to circumvent them. It goes back to our mission as a land-grant institution.”

At age 28 and still early in his career, Jenkins is nationally recognized for his contributions to the field of exercise science. To date, he has published more than 65 manuscripts, 22 as the lead author; secured more than a quarter-million dollars in external funding for research; and in July, he was named the Terry J. Housh Outstanding Young Investigator of the Year by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

“Dr. Jenkins is an impressive young scientist with a strong research record and even stronger character,” said Doug Smith, head of the School of Kinesiology, Applied Health and Recreation. “He is a great representative of OSU, and we are proud to have him here.”

Jenkins said priority and philosophy fuel his productivity. At his core, he is committed to developing the next generation of researchers through intentional mentorship.

With the help of a grant from the NSCA, Jenkins and his team are studying genetic polymorphisms and the effects of caffeine on neuromuscular function. Extensive testing demonstrates that some people respond favorably to caffeine, while others experience detrimental effects or no effect at all. Genetic predisposition may play a role in these responses.

“If successful, the research could spur formal recommendations for athletes on whether consuming caffeine is beneficial for them as an individual,” Jenkins explained.

Jenkins’ team is also looking at the effects of resistance training on post-prandial glucose and lipid responses — how someone clears sugars and fatty acids from the circulatory system after they eat. The post-meal assessment is used to detect things like pre-diabetes or cardiovascular disease risk.

“The goal is to understand how exercise modifies the post-meal response so that we can use it to help with glucose and lipid control and, ultimately, decrease the long-term risk for cardiovascular disease or diabetes,” Jenkins said.

Exercise also has powerful effects on inflammation, acting as an anti-inflammatory stimulus. Jenkins’ research looks at how exercise can be used to decrease systemic inflammation in conditions like aging and cardiovascular or metabolic disease as well as inflammation caused by adverse childhood experiences.

The research is conducted on OSU’s Stillwater campus in the Applied Neuromuscular Physiology Laboratory using state-of-the-art technology and volunteer study participants.

To assess vascular health, Jenkins’ team uses a technique called flow mediated dilation.

“We use a blood pressure cuff in conjunction with a diagnostic ultrasound,” Jenkins said. “We image the artery, then block blood flow for about five minutes. We have some highly specialized software that will track the vessel wall and measure vessel diameter. We also measure blood

Jenkins’ interest in these areas is a personal one. He grew up overweight, but he was also an athlete. After being recruited to play baseball in college, Jenkins began taking exercise and nutrition seriously. It became his passion, both personally and professionally.

As a faculty member, he gets to share that passion with his students.

“My primary goal is to train my doctoral students so they are in the position I was two years ago, graduating with their choice of some of the best jobs out there,” Jenkins emphasized.

Given the success graduate students are experiencing under his guidance, it seems Jenkins is on the right track.

In June, Ryan Colquhoun, a doctoral student in health and human performance, received an $11,000 grant as the principal investigator to fund a neuromuscular research project exploring what causes muscle damage.

“We are looking at muscle actions and whether the shortening or lengthening of the muscle causes damage,” Colquhoun said. “Does lowering weight cause more damage than lifting weight and if so, why?”

Pat Tomko, who just completed his first year in the doctoral program, is also a part of the research team and savoring every moment.

“I’m kind of like a sponge, soaking up all that I can from Dr. Jenkins and Ryan,” Tomko said.

“Learning from others is so important and it’s one of the reasons I chose to come to OSU. I knew I’d be comfortable asking questions here and be supported by outstanding faculty.”

Colquhoun and Tomko recognize the distinctive learning experience OSU provides, specifically as it relates to Jenkins’ hands-on, mentorship approach.

“You’re surrounded by people who want to invest in you,” Colquhoun said. “The focus is on producing quality people and receiving a quality education. That makes me want to return the investment and give it my all.”

As graduate assistants, Colquhoun and Tomko work in the lab, conduct research and teach applied exercise science undergraduate courses, all while pursuing their doctorates in health and human performance. Both hope to follow in Jenkins’ footsteps and one day teach and mentor students of their own.

“My experience has truly set me up for success,” said Colquhoun. “I’m grateful to be a part of a program that has actively trained and empowered me to make an impact on the world through research.” ■

SU-Tulsa graduate students Brendon Glon and Jess White established a mental health hotline for the gay, lesbian and transgender community this summer as part of their new role as Tulsa Schweitzer Fellows.

The hotline will operate from Tulsa’s Dennis R. Neill Equality Center and will be the first such Oklahoma-based service for the LGBTQ community.

Both doctoral students in counseling psychology, Glon and White are among 12 graduate students named 2018-19 Schweitzer Fellows in Tulsa and 260 nationally.

A Listening Ear

OSU-Tulsa graduate students plan to set up a mental health hotline to provide support for the LGBTQ community statewide

Jenkins’ interest in these areas is a personal one. He grew up overweight, but he was also an athlete. After being recruited to play baseball in college, Jenkins began taking exercise and nutrition seriously. It became his passion, both personally and professionally.

As a faculty member, he gets to share that passion with his students.

“My primary goal is to train my doctoral students so they are in the position I was two years ago, graduating with their choice of some of the best jobs out there,” Jenkins emphasized.

Given the success graduate students are experiencing under his guidance, it seems Jenkins is on the right track.

In June, Ryan Colquhoun, a doctoral student in health and human performance, received an $11,000 grant as the principal investigator to fund a neuromuscular research project exploring what causes muscle damage.

“We are looking at muscle actions and whether the shortening or lengthening of the muscle causes damage,” Colquhoun said. “Does lowering weight cause more damage than lifting weight and if so, why?”

Pat Tomko, who just completed his first year in the doctoral program, is also a part of the research team and savoring every moment.

“I’m kind of like a sponge, soaking up all that I can from Dr. Jenkins and Ryan,” Tomko said.

“Learning from others is so important and it’s one of the reasons I chose to come to OSU. I knew I’d be comfortable asking questions here and be supported by outstanding faculty.”

Colquhoun and Tomko recognize the distinctive learning experience OSU provides, specifically as it relates to Jenkins’ hands-on, mentorship approach.

“You’re surrounded by people who want to invest in you,” Colquhoun said. “The focus is on producing quality people and receiving a quality education. That makes me want to return the investment and give it my all.”

As graduate assistants, Colquhoun and Tomko work in the lab, conduct research and teach applied exercise science undergraduate courses, all while pursuing their doctorates in health and human performance. Both hope to follow in Jenkins’ footsteps and one day teach and mentor students of their own.

“My experience has truly set me up for success,” said Colquhoun. “I’m grateful to be a part of a program that has actively trained and empowered me to make an impact on the world through research.” ■

SU-Tulsa graduate students Brendon Glon and Jess White established a mental health hotline for the gay, lesbian and transgender community this summer as part of their new role as Tulsa Schweitzer Fellows.

The hotline will operate from Tulsa’s Dennis R. Neill Equality Center and will be the first such Oklahoma-based service for the LGBTQ community.

ome people may only visit Yellowstone National Park once in a lifetime, but for Dr. Julie Angle, associate professor of secondary science education in the College of Education, Health and Aviation, once just wasn’t enough — try nine times!

While the breathtaking scenery initially drew her to the world’s first national park, it’s undoubtedly the shared educational experience that brings her back time after time. June 2018 marked the third time Angle has led a group of Oklahoma State University students on an adventure to Yellowstone.

“Yellowstone is an amazing natural phenomena,” Angle said. “I get such a thrill sharing this with students! This hands-on course is very dynamic and remains one of my favorite classes to teach.”

The trip is open to all majors and part of a three-credit hour course designed to teach students about the biological and physical

Trip highlights included seeing 13 bears (12 black and one grizzly), hiking the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and the Lower Falls area, learning about the hydrothermal features of the West Thumb Geyser Basin and visiting with Yellowstone’s park rangers.

“It’s such an amazing experience and by far the best and most fun

natural science class you can take at OSU,” said Cathryn Adams, secondary education junior.

Students learned and explored every day, recording their findings in personal journals. Journal entries ranged from scientific information such as water temperature and pH levels found in geysers to the excitement of watching wildlife mere feet away to the overwhelming sensation of earth’s natural artistry.

Emily Baden held several leadership roles including president of Education, Health and Aviation Student Council and executive director for Education, Health and Aviation Week. As philanthropy director for her sorority, Baden helped raise more than $54,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

In addition to volunteering for the Civil Air Patrol, Paulo Claudio was a certified flight instructor for the OSU Flight Center and a member of the OSU Flying Aggies. His passion for flying runs deep, and he competed at the regional and national level with the National Intercollegiate Flight Association. Claudio’s leadership roles included serving as and EHA ambassador and president, treasurer and secretary of Alpha Eta Rho National Aviation Fraternity as well as an EHA ambassador.

As a member of the OSU Recreation Therapy Club and the OSU Recreation Management Club, Madeleine Crawford participated in numerous community activities. Her volunteer work extended to OSU Coaches vs. Cancer, Renaissance Assisted Living, Wings of Hope and the Salvation Army. She worked as a wellness intern at the Seretean Wellness Center and as a technician at Physical Therapy Central. Partnering with the OSU Foundation, Crawford served as a mentor and vice president of communications for the OSU Student Foundation. She also served as a Cowboy Cousin, helping international students learn about the culture on campus.

You also initiated the Letters of Gratitude project on campus. Tell us more about this initiative.

I started Letters of Gratitude after hearing negative comments about our state’s education system. I was tired of being told, “You’re too smart to be a teacher” or “Do you realize how little money you’re going to make?”

I reflected on the reason I originally wanted to become an educator and realized that it was the great educators who I’ve been surrounded by my whole life who drew me to the teaching profession. I wanted to change the negative perception of teachers and allow others to reflect on how they’ve been influenced by education. I began to ponder and research ways I could start this movement and eventually decided to start a website that would facilitate thank-you letters to teachers to show appreciation and gratitude for all that they do.

It was definitely a successful and powerful project. What else do you hope to accomplish before you graduate?

I hope to take advantage of all of the opportunities that I’ve been given and use the resources that OSU has given me. I want to leave here knowing I met diverse people along the way and learned from their perspectives. I aim to know that I’ve done my part to serve our college and university and ensure Oklahoma State is the best place it can be.

What is something you are really passionate about?

Education and its importance; it’s hard for my friends to get me to stop talking about those things. When I hear the negativity that surrounds education, I feel as if it’s my duty to turn it into something positive. I don’t think we can go anywhere by thinking negatively, and my goal is to change the mindset of people and promote more positive thinking.

How have your experiences in the College of Education, Health and Aviation affected you so far?

EHA has given me more than I could have ever imagined since I started here my freshman year. I came in thinking I would be a student, go to class and get my homework done, but that soon changed. I joined the student council and was hired as a student worker for the college. Willard soon became my second home. I know that each person I’ve meet within the college is working to make the world a better place and those people continue to help me shape my goals for the future.

Speaking of your goals for the future, what are your plans after graduation?

My goal is to stay in Oklahoma to teach and do my part to give back to our state’s educational system.

What do you want to do after you graduate?

My dream job is to work for a tourism agency, specifically focusing on ecotourism. The idea is to educate people about conservation and environmental responsibility by taking them on tours. I want to share my appreciation for the environment and show others why it’s important to take care of the world we live in.

How did you become interested in ecotourism?

Last year, I participated in the National Student Exchange program and had the opportunity to live in Honolulu, Hawaii for a semester. I was involved in beach clean-ups, picking up trash and plastic. The experience was life-changing and opened my eyes to how much we need to take care of the environment and be more aware.

Before going to Hawaii, I had no idea ecotourism is what I wanted to do with my life.

Tell us more about your National Student Exchange experience.

I spent the fall 2017 semester taking courses at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. It was an amazing experience.

I loved it! We lived 10 minutes from the beach and went hiking every week.

The atmosphere was beautiful. I was introduced to so many new experiences and opportunities. It was refreshing to be immersed in such a relaxed culture.

Everyone was extremely friendly, family-oriented and adventurous.

What would you tell other students who might be considering an exchange program?

I would tell them to go for it! Get outside your comfort zone, travel, meet new people and take advantage of such an amazing experience while you can.

Like me, you might even realize you can do bigger things than you ever imagined.

What are you involved in on campus?

I’m a member of the Recreation Management Club and Rho Phi Lambda, which is an honor fraternity for recreation management majors. I previously worked at Wings of Hope, helping victims of domestic violence through activities and programming.

Currently, I’m a student worker for the College of Education, Health and Aviation.

What’s your favorite thing about the College of Education, Health and Aviation?

Definitely the people! They really care. My adviser, Todd Snethen, is so willing to work with me and help me. All the professors are fantastic, encouraging and helpful. They truly want to see me succeed.

Have you always wanted to be a nurse?

I knew in high school I wanted to be a nurse. I always knew I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, and I love caring for people. I felt like it was my calling.

After completing my Associate of Science in Nursing from OSU-OKC in 2016, I got a job as a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse. I took a year off of school before I decided to further my education at OSU through the online RN to BSN completion program.

What’s the experience like?

The NICU is exactly how you would picture it; it’s terrifying and so rewarding all at the same time. … At my job, I get to see tiny little miracles every single day, and it’s amazing; it makes you see how truly precious life is. To watch those babies come in so tiny and sick, but then be a part of their progress and eventually see them go home with their parents is amazing. Knowing I was a part of that and helped care for them is the best feeling.

What drew you to work in the NICU? I fell in love with it during my very first clinical. Even though I was overwhelmed by the responsibility of caring for delicate and precious human lives, I felt like that’s where I was meant to be. Coincidentally, the place I had my first NICU clinical is the exact NICU I ended up working in after I became an RN.

How has the online format of the RN to BSN program benefited you?

The online RN to BSN program was important to me because I work fulltime as a night shift nurse, so it made it more convenient for me. Being online, you can do everything on your own time, and you have plenty of time to complete each assignment. Of course, there are deadlines, but it’s easier to get everything done when you don’t have to go to class for a few hours on certain days of the week.

What are your future career aspirations?

Getting my Bachelor of Science in Nursing will give me more opportunities to further my career and move up from being a floor nurse. I’m not sure what the future holds, but I’m happy where I’m at right now, and I don’t have plans to go anywhere else. I’m going to finish my BSN degree and enjoy finally being done with school, for now.

What do you love most about teaching?

I love getting to spend time making a positive impact on the lives of my students, being a proud contributor to the success of the Stillwater community and sharing how beautiful and amazing mathematics is with my students. They think I’m crazy, and I love it!

My passion is being a champion for my students. People often ask why I chose to become a teacher and my response is always the same — teaching is one of the most rewarding professions in the world, and I will never give it up.

Growing up, some of the people who made the most impactful differences in my life were my teachers. Rita Pierson says it best, “Every child deserves a champion: an adult who never gives up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be.” As a teacher, I get to be that champion!

Speaking of education champions, who was that person in your own life?

My grandfather! He spent his entire career in education, serving as a teacher and principal. In fact, all of my siblings, both my aunts and my uncle all work as teachers. It’s a family affair and a tradition I intend to continue!

You must be doing something right, considering you were named as a finalist for Stillwater Public Schools District Teacher of the Year for 201819. Tell us about the experience and what this recognition means to you.

I was very surprised and humbled by the honor. I work very hard, and I have put my whole life into teaching, so it is amazing to be recognized. But, this would not be possible without my amazing and supportive colleagues and, of course, my beloved students!

I found out I was selected as the Will Rogers Elementary site Teacher of the Year on a Friday morning when my principal relayed the news during morning announcements. All three fifth-grade classes ran into the hallway screaming while I was crying in excitement! After a portfolio process, I found out I was one of three finalists for District Teacher of the Year. My principal ordered all fifth-graders into the hallway and the superintendent, assistant superintendent and a Stillwater NewsPress reporter surprised me with the news. It was extremely special to share that moment with my students and colleagues!

What are your career aspirations?

My short-term goal is to graduate from OSU with my Ph.D. and seek a principal position. My long-term goal is to become a superintendent of a larger school district and to continue teaching university courses, publishing research and speaking at events.

Why did you choose to pursue a graduate degree at OSU? I chose OSU because it has an amazing, well-known educational psychology program that supports its students with funding, teaching and research opportunities. I love and appreciate all of the experiences that OSU and EHA have afforded me. I specifically chose to study educational psychology because it bridges the gap between K-12 and higher education while allowing me to study what drives student behaviors and motivation to learn.

You’ve been on faculty for three years now; what makes you stay at OSU? I stay at Oklahoma State University because I love the balance my role provides. Family, work and community are important here.

What stands out to you most about the OSU recreation management program?

Engagement with students. It’s not uncommon to find multiple students in a faculty member’s office, discussing trends in the field, new recreation opportunities or career plans. Our faculty have a strong understanding of the demands students will be faced with in the field and adapt their teaching approaches accordingly.

We are all familiar with the phrase, “do what you love.” In practice, “do what you love” captures the recreation industry’s ability to morph someone’s recreational pursuit into a career field.

We fill our free time with activities that provide adventure, excitement and joy.

Majoring in recreation provides you with the tools you need to turn your leisure and recreation passions into something you get paid to do.

In May 2019, you will lead a travel course to the Dominican Republic. Tell us about this opportunity and why you think it’s important for students to travel abroad.

That project has spurred my continued interest in professional development of collegiate students in recreation and sport management programs.

Why do you love teaching?

I love seeing students make the connections between what we’ve discussed in class and what they’re experiencing in their internship or job.

You have a unique professional background; some may even say your experiences mirror those of what we see on shows like CSI or Law and Order.

Tell us more about your career path.

Primarily, I’ve been in law enforcement. I started as a cadet for the Oklahoma City Police Department (OCPD) when I was 19 and worked my way up from there. Later, I became a crime scene investigator and a latent fingerprint identification expert. I was privileged enough to attend the FBI Academy twice. This was a significant accomplishment, seeing as the FBI only picks one cop from each state twice a year to attend the academy.

I gained so much experience during my 26 years with the OCPD. I worked as an airport officer and learned how to run a semi-major league airport. I was a shift lieutenant for the patrol division, detective for both the burglary unit and the sex crimes unit, and I eventually became the commander of the internal affairs unit.

You are now a full-time professor at OSU. How did you transition from law enforcement to higher education?

Quickly after I retired from the OCPD, I started looking for something else to do. In 1999, I was hired by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations (OSBI) as special agent in the Payne County area. I, along with six other guys, started a new intelligence agency. One of my first assignments was to increase the field offices, and I did it. The first office was established on campus at the OSU Police Department.

During that time, I was finishing my master’s at OSU. Obtaining a doctoral degree really appealed to me, so I went for it. As I neared the end of my program, an assistant professor job popped up

on my radar. My adviser nonchalantly asked if I would ever consider being a professor at OSU. I was shocked and surprised by the question; I never thought teaching was in my cards, but apparently it was. After 13 years with the OSBI, I started as an assistant professor in the aviation and space program. Here I am six years later, and I love it!

What do you love most about teaching?

Definitely the involvement with my students. By teaching young adults what the world is really like, I hope to make a difference in their lives and the future of our world. I teach very pragmatically, meaning I use my values to teach practically about real-life situations, not scenarios. I love being able to use my experience in law enforcement to aid my teaching. When preparing my students for the future, I try to explain that it isn’t about being smart, they are smart; it’s about endurance and showing they are willing to go the extra mile.

What are your research interests?

I have published around 14 research articles with topics ranging from small unmanned aerial systems/drones to carrying weapons on campus. My main focus is homeland security and defense. I do quite a bit of research with the mechanical aerospace engineers. With the U.S. Department of Defense clearances we are able to see, read and do what most people are prohibited from. I continue to research systems design in innovation and sustainability in aviation security as well as stakeholder and user driven methodology in aviation security from a global perspective.

You also serve as the faculty adviser for the Flying Aggies. What does that entail?

The Flying Aggies is a group of students interested in aviation or professional piloting. I believe it’s the second-oldest active club on campus.

Becoming the adviser was another “open door” moment. One of my students came to me and asked if I would be their adviser. Not knowing anything about it, I asked friends and co-workers for their opinions and decided I would give it a try for a year. So I did, and I have been there ever since. The students are active, strong in what they believe and overall really good kids. They do a lot of community service work, they talk to little kids, and they do tours at Will Rogers Airport. One really cool perk these students have is going to Dallas to use 737 and 777 flight simulators that major airlines use for pilot training.

Another cool thing they do is go to an annual aviation air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. They raise funds throughout the year and have to earn their spot to go for a week of airshow stuff. It’s a real bucket list thing for them to experience.

You’ve been on faculty for three years now; what makes you stay at OSU? I stay at Oklahoma State University because I love the balance my role provides. Family, work and community are important here.

What stands out to you most about the OSU recreation management program?

Engagement with students. It’s not uncommon to find multiple students in a faculty member’s office, discussing trends in the field, new recreation opportunities or career plans. Our faculty have a strong understanding of the demands students will be faced with in the field and adapt their teaching approaches accordingly.

We are all familiar with the phrase, “do what you love.” In practice, “do what you love” captures the recreation industry’s ability to morph someone’s recreational pursuit into a career field.

We fill our free time with activities that provide adventure, excitement and joy.

Majoring in recreation provides you with the tools you need to turn your leisure and recreation passions into something you get paid to do.

In May 2019, you will lead a travel course to the Dominican Republic. Tell us about this opportunity and why you think it’s important for students to travel abroad.

What prompted you to pursue a career in aviation?

Aviation is something my father and I have been passionate about since I was young. My lifelong goal has been to become a pilot, and my experience in the College of Education, Health and Aviation has made my dream a reality.

I’m proud to have made the most of the opportunities afforded to me by this wonderful university. I earned my pilot’s license through OSU in 2015 and I have 250-plus flight hours to date.

Spencer Franklin

What advice would you give to future aviation students?

I would encourage anyone in the aviation program to get involved as much as they can and connect with as many people as possible. By competing on the flight team and going to nationals, I made connections that led to an internship with United Airlines. That opportunity ultimately brought me to my current position with Lufthansa Aviation Training.

What were you involved in as a student at OSU? I was involved in several organizations, including the Flying Aggies, OSU Flight Team, Civil Air Patrol, OSU AVED Safety Committee and the OSU Police Department as a student employee.

Expand on your experience with the Civil Air Patrol. What did that entail?

Since 2015, I’ve been a member of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) in the Stillwater Squadron as a mission pilot and aerospace education officer.

Civil Air Patrol is a civilian volunteer program that has three main missions: emergency services, cadet programs and aerospace education. As a member, I’ve led the cadets on an education journey about aerospace that forms a core of their progression through CAP’s cadet programs. I also train and study to stay current as a mission pilot in the event that I’m called to fly transport or other CAP missions.

In 2017, you were named as the first female provost at Northwest. What does that recognition mean to you?

I’m honored. When an outstanding academic university such as Northwest chooses you to be their academic leader, you are faced with the realization that it’s now your responsibility to carry on a proud history while laying the groundwork for the future. Being the first woman to hold this position is gratifying, but I’m confident my past history has prepared me to do justice to this honor. So I can tell you I don’t feel so much like a trailblazer because I’ve been influenced and mentored by some of the smartest and strongest women I’ve known. However, as a mother of three daughters, leading by example and showing them you can be a good mother and leader — well, that’s really a great thing.

Tell us what a provost does at a university.

A provost serves as the institution’s chief academic officer and focuses on learning, academic quality and student success. I work with various groups onand off-campus to develop and evaluate academics at the university and ensure that what we do is aligned with the university’s strategic plan, accreditation standards and compliance with laws and federal and state requirements.

How did your experiences at OSU prepare you for your future?

The OSU doctoral degree, proudly displayed on my office wall, stands for excellence and perseverance. I had to juggle driving to campus for classes at night while carrying a fulltime teaching load at UCO during the daytime. My husband was an officer in the Navy and was gone a good portion of the time serving our country, so I had to find the balance between being a student and teacher with being the mother to my three very young girls.

But at OSU, I found supportive and understanding faculty and advisers who were wonderfully dedicated people and really connected with me and all of their doctoral students. They helped move the obstacles that they could and challenged me to think deeply when I needed the extra push. My passion for teaching and helping students achieve their lifelong goals began at OSU. At the end of the day, what are you most passionate about?

Easy, my family. I have been married to my husband for 25 years, and we have three wonderful daughters. As they endeavor through college and enter the workforce, we are very proud of the strong young women they have become.

- Passing it Forward

The Woods brothers continue to make an impact both on and off the football field

I

n football, a player can take pride in his on-the-field accomplishments.

But as OSU’s famed Woods brothers are learning, there can be even more pride for the coaches in what they’re passing on to the next generation.

Rashaun, Donovan and D’Juan Woods all donned orange and black uniforms for Cowboy football. From 2000 to 2007, at least one Woods brother was on the team. And all three are proud of their — and their brothers’ — successful Division I careers at Oklahoma State University.

“One of the greatest experiences I have had to date was getting to play a game that I love with the people I love,” D’Juan said. “Those are things you are blessed and lucky to have, especially at that level.”

The Woods brothers grew up in a close-knit family. Parents Juana and Larry raised them with a drive and passion, and their father helped them focus on what they wanted to achieve in their futures.

“My mom and dad did a great job of keeping their arms around us,” Donovan said. “They didn’t let us get influenced a ton by stuff going on in the outside world. That was most of the reason we were able to go on and stay the course that we did.”

At OSU, both D’Juan and Rashaun were education majors, while Donovan majored in marketing.

The love for and passion to play football with each other developed early.

The Woods household was competitive, and the brothers took pride in defeating one another as well as in a group effort to succeed against their older brother, Gary.

“We bred competitiveness,” Gary said. “If you get that much testosterone under one roof, there is going to be some competition. I used to just drive them, and they wanted to beat me so bad. Each of them can tell you the day they were able to beat me in a sport.”

The drive to conquer Gary even spilled over into video games, including Street Fighter.

“Gary knew about throwing the Sonic Boom, and we didn’t know how to throw it back,” D’Juan said. “So Gary being how he is, he took the book and hid it so we couldn’t learn how to beat him.”

Gary also mentored his younger brothers in football. After attending Millwood High School in Oklahoma City, Gary went on to play football at Langston University. Gary brought what he learned from his coaches back to his brothers to teach them the right way to play the game.

“Now that I am a little older, I know there would be no Woods brothers without Gary,” D’Juan said. “The time and effort he put into showing us the ropes when it came to skill positions was important.”

The training Gary showed his younger brothers included drills and techniques to give them an upper hand against other players their age. He also brought his brothers to train at the University of Central Oklahoma while they were still in high school.

“I would take them up to UCO when they were sophomores and juniors, and I would have them go against the college guys in 7-on-7 drills at UCO because I knew some guys up there,” Gary explained. “They were gracious enough to allow Rashaun, D’Juan and Donovan to work out with them.”

This led to Rashaun, D’Juan and Donovan competing at OSU and beyond. Rashaun was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2004 and spent time in NFL Europe and the Canadian Football League. D’Juan signed as a free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2007, but his career was ended by a spinal cord injury in 2009. Donovan entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008.

Since their time in the NFL, the drive to help others has consumed the lives of all three. For Rashaun, it turned his attention from playing to coaching. He was hired as the head football coach at John Marshall High School in Oklahoma City — a program that had gone winless the season before.

After five years of his hard work and determination, the team won the 2018 Class 3A state championship. Rashaun said it all started by changing the mentality of his players.

“I want those guys to be confident that they can achieve anything,” Rashaun said. “Being the best that they can be is something I tell them all the time.”

Rashaun also recruited his brothers to help him, continuing the legacy of conquering their goals together as a family. Donovan, in addition to his role as a development officer at OSU-OKC, has served as the defensive coordinator for the past four seasons. D’Juan, the owner of Woods Fit LLC in Los Angeles, sends the team workouts. Gary also served as the secondary coach for two seasons.

The passion to mentor the next generation flows in the blood of all of the Woods brothers. It’s something they learned from their parents and other family members, including their grandfather, Henry Langston.

“There are great people in my life who helped me be the man I am today,” Rashaun said. “It’s important I try to do the same thing for the next generation because if you don’t have that, then it’s a broken generation.”

Their willingness to help others does not end on the football field, either. At OSU-OKC, Donovan sees giving back as something that can be done through the classroom as well.

“We had an opportunity to give a young lady in our nursing program a scholarship for $1,000,” Donovan said.

“And you would have thought she won the lottery. Being a part of that and seeing the impact it made hit me pretty hard.”

The Woods brothers have come a long way from the football fields of Millwood High and OSU, and their impact can be seen from Oklahoma to Los Angeles.

“Giving back to kids and passing it down allows you to reinvent yourself and grow every single day,” D’Juan said. ■

Rashaun, Donovan and D’Juan Woods all donned orange and black uniforms for Cowboy football. From 2000 to 2007, at least one Woods brother was on the team. And all three are proud of their — and their brothers’ — successful Division I careers at Oklahoma State University.

“One of the greatest experiences I have had to date was getting to play a game that I love with the people I love,” D’Juan said. “Those are things you are blessed and lucky to have, especially at that level.”

The Woods brothers grew up in a close-knit family. Parents Juana and Larry raised them with a drive and passion, and their father helped them focus on what they wanted to achieve in their futures.

“My mom and dad did a great job of keeping their arms around us,” Donovan said. “They didn’t let us get influenced a ton by stuff going on in the outside world. That was most of the reason we were able to go on and stay the course that we did.”

At OSU, both D’Juan and Rashaun were education majors, while Donovan majored in marketing.

The love for and passion to play football with each other developed early.

The Woods household was competitive, and the brothers took pride in defeating one another as well as in a group effort to succeed against their older brother, Gary.

“We bred competitiveness,” Gary said. “If you get that much testosterone under one roof, there is going to be some competition. I used to just drive them, and they wanted to beat me so bad. Each of them can tell you the day they were able to beat me in a sport.”

The drive to conquer Gary even spilled over into video games, including Street Fighter.

“Gary knew about throwing the Sonic Boom, and we didn’t know how to throw it back,” D’Juan said. “So Gary being how he is, he took the book and hid it so we couldn’t learn how to beat him.”

Gary also mentored his younger brothers in football. After attending Millwood High School in Oklahoma City, Gary went on to play football at Langston University. Gary brought what he learned from his coaches back to his brothers to teach them the right way to play the game.

“Now that I am a little older, I know there would be no Woods brothers without Gary,” D’Juan said. “The time and effort he put into showing us the ropes when it came to skill positions was important.”

The training Gary showed his younger brothers included drills and techniques to give them an upper hand against other players their age. He also brought his brothers to train at the University of Central Oklahoma while they were still in high school.

“I would take them up to UCO when they were sophomores and juniors, and I would have them go against the college guys in 7-on-7 drills at UCO because I knew some guys up there,” Gary explained. “They were gracious enough to allow Rashaun, D’Juan and Donovan to work out with them.”

This led to Rashaun, D’Juan and Donovan competing at OSU and beyond. Rashaun was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2004 and spent time in NFL Europe and the Canadian Football League. D’Juan signed as a free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2007, but his career was ended by a spinal cord injury in 2009. Donovan entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008.

Since their time in the NFL, the drive to help others has consumed the lives of all three. For Rashaun, it turned his attention from playing to coaching. He was hired as the head football coach at John Marshall High School in Oklahoma City — a program that had gone winless the season before.

After five years of his hard work and determination, the team won the 2018 Class 3A state championship. Rashaun said it all started by changing the mentality of his players.

“I want those guys to be confident that they can achieve anything,” Rashaun said. “Being the best that they can be is something I tell them all the time.”

Rashaun also recruited his brothers to help him, continuing the legacy of conquering their goals together as a family. Donovan, in addition to his role as a development officer at OSU-OKC, has served as the defensive coordinator for the past four seasons. D’Juan, the owner of Woods Fit LLC in Los Angeles, sends the team workouts. Gary also served as the secondary coach for two seasons.

The passion to mentor the next generation flows in the blood of all of the Woods brothers. It’s something they learned from their parents and other family members, including their grandfather, Henry Langston.

“There are great people in my life who helped me be the man I am today,” Rashaun said. “It’s important I try to do the same thing for the next generation because if you don’t have that, then it’s a broken generation.”

Their willingness to help others does not end on the football field, either. At OSU-OKC, Donovan sees giving back as something that can be done through the classroom as well.

“We had an opportunity to give a young lady in our nursing program a scholarship for $1,000,” Donovan said.

“And you would have thought she won the lottery. Being a part of that and seeing the impact it made hit me pretty hard.”

The Woods brothers have come a long way from the football fields of Millwood High and OSU, and their impact can be seen from Oklahoma to Los Angeles.

“Giving back to kids and passing it down allows you to reinvent yourself and grow every single day,” D’Juan said. ■

College donors Give Orange

Flying Aggies host Scouts’ Merit Badge Day

The College of Education, Health and Aviation raised $21,641 from 77 total gifts in just over 24 hours during the 2nd Annual Give Orange Campaign in April. Give Orange challenges OSU students, alumni and friends to come together to support their orange passion over 1,890 minutes.

Overall, the campaign raised $610,277 in gifts from alumni and friends from every state in the U.S.

The Oklahoma State University Flying Aggies Flight Team held the inaugural Boy Scouts of America Aviation Merit Badge Day at Stillwater Regional Airport this past January.

Eighteen Boy Scouts from the Stillwater area participated alongside OSU’s entire flight team of 17 professional pilots.

The team shared their love for aviation, especially since a number of flight team members were former Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts themselves.

Flight team members provided a unique learning experience and helped the Scouts complete the five requirements necessary for the merit badge. The Scouts learned about aircraft preflight, instrumentation, engines, aviation careers, aircraft recognition and how to build two different types of homemade gliders. Participants even had the opportunity to fly the state-of-the-art Red Bird simulator.

By the end of the day, all the Boy Scouts earned their aviation merit badges.

“Our hope was that each Scout left with not only a greater knowledge of aviation at OSU, but if lucky, the sprouting of a love for aviation much like our own,” said Dr. Matt Vance, assistant professor in the OSU Aviation and Space Program.

Nine lucky Scouts — the winners of the glider competition — also got to take an orientation flight in an OSU aircraft with three flight team instructors.

“This event allowed us to come together as a team and give back to our community while also propelling us into the upcoming competitive season,” Vance said. “A colossal thank you is in order to flight team member Jacob White, who coordinated and organized a spectacular event for all who were in attendance. We look forward to seeing more Scouts at this event in the future.”

Brock establishes chair in educational leadership A $100,000 gift from the John and Donnie Brock Foundation will establish the Brock Chair in Innovative Educational Leadership. The chair will facilitate creative and cutting-edge educational approaches and strengthen the educational leadership program’s national reputation.

Brock and his late wife, Donnie, are Oklahoma natives and well-known for their investment in education. In 2001, they established and endowed the Brock International Prize for Education and Brock Symposium to discover and honor the best and most innovative ideas in education. The Brocks created a professorship in educational policy and leadership at OSU in 2008 and launched the Brock Fellowship in Educational Leadership through OSU-Tulsa last year.

The College of Education, Health and Aviation will use the chair position to recruit and retain a new faculty member in the educational leadership program. In addition to supporting a faculty salary, the fund will aid students, research endeavors, curriculum development and the creation of a center for innovation.

“This generous gift allows us to attract and support the best entrepreneurial talent in the field of education,” said John Romans, dean of the college. “Gifts such as these are increasingly impactful as the educational climate continues to change and evolve. EHA alumna receives Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award Dr. Virginia Drywater-Whitekiller has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award to study in Canada in Aboriginal Studies. She will conduct research at Vancouver Island University, British Columbia, as part of a project to explore indigenous cultural resilience student supports in higher education pathways.

Drywater-Whitekiller is one of more than 800 U.S. citizens who will teach, conduct research and/or provide expertise abroad for the 2018-19 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.

She was selected based on her academic and professional achievements as well as her record of service and demonstrated leadership in her field. She earned her doctorate in higher education in 2004 and is a professor at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Her research interests include cultural resilience theory, Native American issues and social work with children and the aged.

COLLEGE’S IBARRA NAMED AN OUTSTANDING SENIOR The OSU Alumni Association named College of Education, Health and Aviation student Omar Ibarra a 2018 Outstanding Senior. Ibarra is from Guymon, Oklahoma, and graduated in Spring 2018 with a degree in health education and promotion.

While at OSU, he served as president and community service chair for the Hispanic Student Association and was a member of the EHA Ambassadors. In 2017, he was featured in a story in The New York Times, “I Won’t Give Up: How First-Generation Students See College.”

Ibarra is one of 14 seniors who were chosen for this prestigious award, recognizing students who excel through academic achievement; campus and community activities; academic, athletic or extracurricular honors or awards; scholarships and work ethic during their time at OSU.

Educational technology degrees offered online The College of Education, Health and Aviation’s educational technology program is now offering two online degree options, a Master of Science in Educational Technology and a Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching.

“It’s important we continue to adapt to the needs of our students and provide flexible and affordable options,” said John Romans, dean of the College of Education, Health and Aviation.

Students can expect a hands-on, collaborative and innovative learning experience, even with the online delivery format, as they explore the use of technology to appropriately support the teaching and learning of any subject area.

“There really is a culture of sharing ideas and helping each other,” said Dr. Penny Thompson, associate professor of educational technology and program coordinator. “We have online discussion boards and video chats in our courses that encourage conversation and collaboration.”

The master’s program has two options, educational technology and school library media. The educational technology option focuses on instructional design, online teaching, information management and multimedia design.

Graduates are qualified to serve as educational technologists within schools, universities and corporate settings. The school library media option leads to advanced certification as a school media library specialist in Oklahoma.

Oklahoma State University was recently included on the list of Most Affordable Online Master’s in Educational Technology and Best Online Master’s in Educational Technology by College Choice, ranked No. 7 and No. 20, respectively. The program was also included on the 30 Best Online Master’s in Educational Technology Degree Programs

by TheBestSchools.org.

Educational technology also offers a Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching, which can be completed on its own or added to an existing master’s or doctoral program. FIVE FACULTY RECEIVE AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE Five College of Education, Health and Aviation faculty members were honored at the annual EHA Excellence Awards reception for their excellence in research, international education, leadership and service, graduate student involvement and teaching.

“These faculty members play an integral role in the success of the college through research, service, mentorship and academic instruction,” said Dean John Romans. “We are grateful for their contributions.”

EHA hosts education preview event This past spring, the OSU College of Education, Health and Aviation hosted more than 40 high school students from across Oklahoma for an education preview day. Participants attended interactive sessions, explored education career paths and learned more about OSU. The event was supported by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Oklahoma Teacher Connection Collegiate Grants, which are one-year grants that encourage the recruitment, retention and placement efforts of teachers in Oklahoma.

“We were really excited to receive this grant and use it as a recruitment opportunity for the College of Education, Health and Aviation,” said Robin Fuxa, director of the OSU Professional Education Unit. “We have a great need for teachers in the state of Oklahoma.

This event allowed us to generate excitement about education and encourage students to commit to teaching.”

The day began with a powerful opening session, emphasizing what makes teaching a great job and why teachers matter. Students then attended five breakout sessions, designed to promote and showcase the teaching profession. Current EHA students and faculty used engaging examples to demonstrate what it’s really like to be a teacher in the classroom. From a mixed-reality teaching experience with avatars to a musical call to join the teaching revolution, students experienced the creativity, imagination and passion that goes into the teaching process.

Dr. Julie Croff, associate professor in health education and promotion, received the Research Excellence Award for her distinguished research on measuring health behaviors among adolescent girls by collecting and analyzing detailed sleep measurements of study participants to help identify the interplay of alcohol use, diet and sleep.

Dr. Katherine Curry, associate professor in school administration, received the International Education Excellence Award in recognition of her partnership with the EHA International Studies Office, including international teaching, research and outreach programs and activities.

The Leadership and Service Excellence Award was presented to Dr. Chad Depperschmidt, associate professor in aviation and space, for his significant achievements in leadership and service within the college.

Dr. Tonya Hammer, associate professor in counseling and counseling psychology, received the Graduate Faculty Excellence Award in recognition of her outstanding achievement and professional involvement with graduate students.

The Teaching Excellence Award went to Dr. Sheri Vasinda, associate professor in reading and literacy education, for her devotion to high quality instruction and commitment to enhancing the student learning experience.

OSUTeach celebrates first graduating class The first OSUTeach graduating class was formally recognized during a special reception in April. President Burns Hargis, along with First Cowgirl Ann Hargis and numerous faculty, staff and guests gathered to celebrate the achievements of these 13 students and promote the program. OSUTeach was established in 2014 and is the only UTeach program in Oklahoma. It aims to attract a wide range of science and mathematics majors into secondary teaching careers, prepare them through an advanced field-intensive curriculum and promote professional retention through induction and support and ongoing professional development.

The program is a collaboration between the College of Education, Health and Aviation and the College of Arts and Sciences.

Future teacher surprised with life-changing gift Jordan Webb, 2018 elementary education graduate, was surprised with a life-changing gift on the Monday before graduation. OSU alumnus Bryan Close announced he was paying off Webb’s student loan debt through a scholarship award.

“This is not what I expected,” Webb said. “I thought I was just being recognized. Wow. This is amazing.”

Webb had been called into a meeting with the dean under the premise that she was receiving an award. When she arrived, Close presented her with a certificate and letter.

“It took a few moments for her to fully comprehend the weight of what was happening, but once it did, her face said it all,” said John Romans, dean of the College of Education, Health and Aviation. “You could see the array of emotions, from shock and disbelief, to surprise and elation and, ultimately, extreme gratitude.”

He graduated from OSU in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant administration and is the president of CloseBend Inc., a company his father started in 1974. Close is an avid supporter of OSU and has established several endowed scholarships, including a transfer student scholarship in the College of Education, Health and Aviation. In 2015, he was inducted into the OSU Hall of Fame.

Two graduate students win $8,000 counseling fellowship

Two College of Education, Health and Aviation students were recently presented the Geraldine Burns Award for Excellence in English Studies.

Jon Chuning, an OSU graduate in English education, and Dillon Graham, a senior in English education, are two of 12 winners to receive the award from the Oklahoma Council of Teachers of English (OKCTE).

“The award is one way English education programs can recognize outstanding future teachers,” said Dr. Shelbie Witte, professor of English education. “Both Jon and Dillon exemplify the very best that OSU has to offer. Any Oklahoma middle school or high school would be lucky to have them as English teachers.”

Institutions of higher education nominated the best English teacher in their program from the 2,200 teachers graduating from Oklahoma universities in 2018. The National Board for Certified Counselors Foundation recently selected two Oklahoma State University graduate students for the NBCC Minority Fellowship Program-Youth.

Bakare is from Schwenksville, Pennsylvania, and is a graduate of Clarion University of Pennsylvania. She is pursuing a master’s degree in mental health counseling at OSU-Tulsa. Bakare desires to serve transitionage youth, primarily in the black and Lantinx communities. Her goal is to utilize her expertise and passion for continuing education and life skills development in group homes, transitional living programs and adolescent partial-hospitalization or in-patient facilities.

Award-winning slam poet visits OSU The College of Education, Health and Aviation partnered with the Student Union Activities Board to host spoken word artist Carlos Andrés Gómez this spring.

Gómez is an award-winning poet, speaker, actor and author of the memoir Man Up: Reimagining Modern Manhood. He is also start of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, TV One’s Verses and Flow and Spike Lee’s movie Inside Man. Gómez uses poetry to explore social identity through an intersectional lens, examining how race, gender, sexuality, class and other identities frame and impact our lives.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD GOES TO MOGHADDAM Masoud Moghaddam, a doctoral student in health and human performance, won the People’s Choice Award and a $2,000 cash prize at the President’s Fellows Grand Three Minute Challenge (3MC) on April 24.

Moghaddam has now won People’s Choice honors at all three competitions he participated in this year, using his research presentation, “Move Out of Your Comfort Zone: High Intensity Interval Training Delays Early Muscle Aging.”

In Fall 2017, Moghaddam placed first and received the People’s Choice Award at the college-level Three Minute Thesis (3MT) event. From there, he went on to represent the College of Education, Health and Aviation in the 3MT final competition hosted by the OSU Graduate College, once again receiving the People’s Choice Award.

The 3MC celebrates the success of the 3MT and Three Minute Presentation in a head-to-head competition of winners from both events. Participants are judged on communication style, comprehension and engagement. The event is sponsored by the OSU Presidential Fellows, a unique society made up of passionate and loyal OSU alumni and supporters.

FOUR GRADUATE STUDENTS HONORED Four College of Education, Health and Aviation graduate students were recognized for their distinguished achievements during the annual spring awards ceremony hosted by the OSU Graduate College and the Graduate and Professional Student Government Association.

Mitchel Magrini and Jennie Martin received the Summer Dissertation Fellowship, which supports research for outstanding full-time postcandidacy doctoral students from any discipline. This fellowship includes a $6,000 stipend and a tuition waiver for up to three credit hours.

Magrini, a doctoral student in health and human performance, will conduct research for his study, “The physiological determinants of rate of force production across the life span.” He is examining the effects of age on the neural, contractile and morphological determinants of rate of force production and how the contributions of each determinant may change as a result of the aging process.

EHA alumna wins prestigious award Dr. Stacey Ford Butterfield has received Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women’s prestigious Carolyn Helman Lichtenberg Crest Award in honor of her professional achievements. She is the Jenks (Oklahoma) Public Schools superintendent.

Butterfield earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Oklahoma State University. She received her doctorate from the University of Oklahoma.

Butterfield has been recognized for her leadership and contribution to education, recently being named one of Tulsa Business Journal’s Women of Distinction and one of the Oklahoma Journal Record’s 50 Making a Difference. She volunteers with Leadership Tulsa, the Oklahoma Board of Directors for Junior Achievement and Tulsa Court Appointed Special Advocates, among others.

Martin’s goal is to use the findings from this study to aid in the development of prevention and treatment methods for body image-related concerns.

Roland Nunez, a doctoral student in educational leadership and policy studies, is a fellowship alternate. His study, “Exploring Student Attitudes Toward College Socialization Using an Edutainment CollegeThemed Novel,” aims at helping at-risk students adequately prepare for life on a college campus when they do not have the resources to learn the reality of college living.

Ying Xiu, a doctoral student in educational technology, received two awards for her abstract, “Students’ Motivation, Perspectives and Learning in Flipped University Classrooms.” Xiu placed first in the Public Abstract Writing Contest and second in the Technical Abstract Writing Contest.

“It was a big accomplishment for Ying to receive two awards, considering it’s a challenge to write effectively for both audiences at once,” said Dr. Penny Thompson, associate professor in educational technology and Xiu’s adviser. “I’m extremely proud of her and all of the graduate students who were recognized.”

Dorothy Hetrick named honorary Flying Aggie The Oklahoma State University Flying Aggies recognized Dorothy Kriter Hetrick as its first honorary Flying Aggie during the 2018 Alumni Banquet. The award was created to celebrate those who have paved the way and who truly embody the spirit of OSU aviation.

Born in 1922, the descendant of Oklahoma pioneers, the moment Hetrick fell in love with flying is forever etched in the history books. In February 1937, Amelia Earhart landed in Blackwell during a trip from New York to California. Earhart was already world-famous and drew a crowd that included the 14-year-old Hetrick, who was enamored with Earhart and her fantastic plane. Six months later, Earhart’s plane would go down in the South Pacific, but Hetrick never gave up her dream for flying. The experience that day made a lasting impact and fueled her passion for aviation.

When she graduated from high school in 1939, Hetrick enrolled at Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa to follow her mother’s footsteps, pursuing a career in education. It was during this time that she began dating a gentleman who was a pilot and flight instructor. He took Hetrick up on numerous flights, and her love for flying grew even more. He taught her how to fly, and she excelled. Not only were few people flying those days, but even fewer females were flying. She was certainly a woman ahead of her time. Throughout her life, Hetrick effortlessly weaved her passion for education with her love for aviation.

Hetrick left college after the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941 to support the war efforts and her future husband, Chuck, who had enlisted in the Marine Corps. Following his discharge in 1946, the married couple enrolled at Oklahoma State University to complete their degrees in education and initiate their lifelong careers in teaching and coaching. In 1961, Hetrick received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from OSU. She completed her master’s degree from OSU in 1963.

Following many years of teaching, she became the principal at Washington Elementary School in Blackwell, one of few female principals in Oklahoma then.

Hetrick’s teaching and administrative career spanned 37 years. She was honored as Blackwell’s Teacher of the Year at Teacher Recognition Day in Oklahoma City and served as president of the Blackwell Teacher’s Organization.

HALL OF FAME

Community projects promote science learning Nicole Colston, assistant research professor in the School of Teaching, Learning and Educational Sciences, led two successful community engagement projects during the summer to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through skate contests and weekly outdoor camps, proving that learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom.

In May, Colston partnered with Dr. Bobbi Kay Lewis, assistant dean of outreach and communications for the College of Arts and Sciences, to host Push Forward, a one-day skate contest for Stillwater residents ages 13-25 at Strickland Park. The event showcased informal science learning and promoted the community skate park.

“The goal is for people to think about spaces, outside of the classroom, where people can learn about science throughout their entire lifespan,” Colston said.

The contest highlighted the physics of skating and allowed skaters to connect what they love to do with science concepts. Activities included using a hand-held accelerometer (PocketLab) to measure angular velocity, or rotation, of the skateboard along three dimensions.

In addition to Push Forward, Colston directed the Lake McMurtry Outdoor Adventure Camp for four weeks in June.

A new theme was introduced each week: nature observing, park science, outdoor skills and wild arts. Campers ages 7-12 took advantage of all that Lake McMurtry has to offer, including hiking, swimming and fishing. Favorite activities among campers included making bug motels, taking wildlife photos, building ground forts and working with natural clay.

“The camp promoted the lake and its awesome facilities, but it also provided a quality educational experience,” Colston said. “Campers made STEM connections, while having fun outdoors.”

Mary Lynn Peacher and Dr. J. Helen Perkins are the newest members of the Oklahoma State University College of Education, Health and Aviation Hall of Fame after the 20th annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony in May.

TOP HONORS College introduces research fellows Dr. Tim Baghurst and Dr. Guoping Zhao have been named EHA Research Fellows. This inaugural honorary title celebrates and encourages outstanding faculty research and scholarship contributions.

“Research involvement is a critical component in the professoriate and those that exemplify such qualities through disseminated research results are highly valued professionals,” said Bert Jacobson, associate dean for research, engagement and administration. “We are excited to introduce this prestigious accolade as a way to further support research efforts within our college and showcase the impressive work of our faculty.”

Baghurst, associate professor in health and human performance, joined the OSU faculty in 2012 and holds a doctorate from the University of Arkansas. His research interests include modeling health and professional dispositions within health professions, male body image and muscle dysmorphia, skills and fitness testing in physical education and coaching and ethics in sports.

He coordinates the sports and coaching science program and developed OSU’s coaching science undergraduate degree and minor.

Zhao, professor in social foundations, is an internationally recognized scholar in philosophy education, comparative philosophy and Chinese education. Her work covers a broad range of topics, including theories of the subject, ethics, spirituality, democracy and politics of education and philosophical dialogue between Western modern and postmodern philosophy and Chinese philosophy. Zhao holds a doctorate from the University of Virginia and joined the OSU faculty in 2002.

As EHA Research Fellows, Baghurst and Zhao will mentor, encourage and support faculty in their research endeavors as well as foster research collaboration among faculty, students and the university. Each will serve a two-year appointment and receive a $4,000 annual stipend.

Peacher received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from OSU in 1969. She spent nearly 20 years teaching fourth grade at Jenks Public Schools. She was the Oklahoma Teacher of the Year in 1999 and went on to be one of four finalists for the national award. That same year, Peacher was named a Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholar. She was chosen for the USA Today All-USA First Teacher Team in 2001 and received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 2004. She served 15 years on the EHA Alumni Society and remains an active member of the OSU Alumni Leadership Council and the EHA Associates group.

Perkins earned a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the OSU College of Education in 1999.

For more than 40 years, she has been a reading specialist, classroom teacher and literacy coach. Perkins is a national and international expert in African-American literacy as well as reading interventions. In 2003, she was appointed to the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors.

She was named the first AfricanAmerican editor of a premier journal by the International Literacy Association in 2006 and was honored with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Award in 2015. She is currently an associate professor of literacy at the University of Memphis and lead writer for the International Literacy Association Professional Standards.

In addition, Jenks elementary teacher Michelle Fowler received the 2018 Rising Star Award, given to individuals who have received a bachelor’s degree within the last 10 years, and who demonstrate the promise of future leadership and bring distinction to the college.

Fowler earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from OSU in 2010. She has since taught fifth and sixth grade as a core classroom teacher at Jenks West Intermediate School, where she was named the 2017-18 Teacher of the Year.

HALL OF FAME

Community projects promote science learning Nicole Colston, assistant research professor in the School of Teaching, Learning and Educational Sciences, led two successful community engagement projects during the summer to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through skate contests and weekly outdoor camps, proving that learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom.

In May, Colston partnered with Dr. Bobbi Kay Lewis, assistant dean of outreach and communications for the College of Arts and Sciences, to host Push Forward, a one-day skate contest for Stillwater residents ages 13-25 at Strickland Park. The event showcased informal science learning and promoted the community skate park.

“The goal is for people to think about spaces, outside of the classroom, where people can learn about science throughout their entire lifespan,” Colston said.

The contest highlighted the physics of skating and allowed skaters to connect what they love to do with science concepts. Activities included using a hand-held accelerometer (PocketLab) to measure angular velocity, or rotation, of the skateboard along three dimensions.

In addition to Push Forward, Colston directed the Lake McMurtry Outdoor Adventure Camp for four weeks in June.

A new theme was introduced each week: nature observing, park science, outdoor skills and wild arts. Campers ages 7-12 took advantage of all that Lake McMurtry has to offer, including hiking, swimming and fishing. Favorite activities among campers included making bug motels, taking wildlife photos, building ground forts and working with natural clay.

“The camp promoted the lake and its awesome facilities, but it also provided a quality educational experience,” Colston said. “Campers made STEM connections, while having fun outdoors.”

Mary Lynn Peacher and Dr. J. Helen Perkins are the newest members of the Oklahoma State University College of Education, Health and Aviation Hall of Fame after the 20th annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony in May.

TOP HONORS College introduces research fellows Dr. Tim Baghurst and Dr. Guoping Zhao have been named EHA Research Fellows. This inaugural honorary title celebrates and encourages outstanding faculty research and scholarship contributions.

“Research involvement is a critical component in the professoriate and those that exemplify such qualities through disseminated research results are highly valued professionals,” said Bert Jacobson, associate dean for research, engagement and administration. “We are excited to introduce this prestigious accolade as a way to further support research efforts within our college and showcase the impressive work of our faculty.”

Baghurst, associate professor in health and human performance, joined the OSU faculty in 2012 and holds a doctorate from the University of Arkansas. His research interests include modeling health and professional dispositions within health professions, male body image and muscle dysmorphia, skills and fitness testing in physical education and coaching and ethics in sports.

He coordinates the sports and coaching science program and developed OSU’s coaching science undergraduate degree and minor.

Zhao, professor in social foundations, is an internationally recognized scholar in philosophy education, comparative philosophy and Chinese education. Her work covers a broad range of topics, including theories of the subject, ethics, spirituality, democracy and politics of education and philosophical dialogue between Western modern and postmodern philosophy and Chinese philosophy. Zhao holds a doctorate from the University of Virginia and joined the OSU faculty in 2002.

As EHA Research Fellows, Baghurst and Zhao will mentor, encourage and support faculty in their research endeavors as well as foster research collaboration among faculty, students and the university. Each will serve a two-year appointment and receive a $4,000 annual stipend.
