Welcome to OSU We don’t like to brag but what we do here is pretty special.

Everything you need to know about OSU can be summed up in what’s known as the land-grant mission.

Land-grant universities were established in the late 19th century to build, feed and defend a growing nation. They’ve grown into major research institutions and comprehensive universities such as OSU with thousands of students and hundreds of majors.

What sets OSU apart is its universitywide commitment to research, instruction, extension and leadership. Its staff, faculty and students believe in that commitment and practice it each day. We’re here to serve the state, nation and world.

It’s a commitment visible in the OSU extension offices of all 77 Oklahoma counties and in the university’s extensive research in the fields of medicine, animal care, education, engineering, architecture, art, humanities, human sciences, agriculture, business and many others.

The Freshman Research Scholars program provides an opportunity for students to extend their education by engaging in cutting-edge research under the guidance of innovative faculty researchers.

OSU’s History OSU’s beginnings date back to the Civil War when President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill in 1862 written by U.S. Rep. Justin Morrill of Vermont. The Land-Grant College Act, which called for the donation and selling of public lands to set up colleges, opened higher education to the general public instead of an advantage available only to the rich.

Oklahoma State was founded on Christmas Day in 1890 on a plot of land in the new Oklahoma Territory settlement of Stillwater.

Our Purpose OSU’s motto is research, extension and instruction. Two of those are self-explanatory. Our faculty members conduct research that can be applied to solve problems. And no university would be a university without instruction. At OSU, we push instruction to the level of mentorship, pairing our students who seek mentors with talented, bright and dedicated professors with a drive for scholarship and a love for helping students.

The extension part of our mission is no less visible. Extension puts science-based knowledge at the fingertips of the public and uses educational programs to help Oklahomans solve local issues, address concerns, promote leadership and manage resources.

But research, extension and instruction are just parts of why we’re here.

among Big 12 universities. We believe this is part of the land-grant mission of service. More than that, OSU gives students the tools to change their lives — a basic definition of leadership.

Employers increasingly look for new hires with a broad education and strong critical thinking skills, which are essential traits of budding leaders. And it shows in our results.

Job recruiters rate OSU graduates among the nation’s best prepared for the workforce.

We also understand that college is about more than preparing people for the workforce. That’s why we’re committed to making OSU a healthy campus, one that encourages such good habits as proper exercise and eating, stress management and activities such as intramural sports.

A university is only as good as its students’ success. That’s why OSU offers a variety of services to help students do well, including free tutoring, a writing center in Morrill Hall, the Math Learning Success Center and the Learning and Student Success Opportunity Center in the Student Union.

Did you know OSU is known as a leader in firefighter training, safety technology and emergency services research?

That shows in our results. From 2003 to 2012, OSU had a freshman retention rate of nearly 80 percent.

More than 3,500 undergraduates earn degrees each year. In 201213 academic year, 1,099 students received master’s degrees, up 37 percent since 2007.

COLLEGES

OSU’s six academic colleges make it a comprehensive university with more than 200 majors. The College of Arts and Sciences, the Spears School of Business, the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology, the College of Human Sciences, the College of Education and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources educate our students in nearly every academic discipline.

The colleges house schools and programs not found on many of the nation’s campuses, such as the Donald W. Reynolds School of Architecture and the National Center for Microbial Forensics & Food and Agricultural Biosecurity.

Increasingly, universities consider study abroad an essential part of a college experience. Oklahoma State, with a history of internationalism thanks to its roots in the Point Four Program and Ethiopia, has always been ahead of the game with exchange programs in 58 countries and study-abroad opportunities in nearly every nation in the world.

OSU’s internationalism doesn’t end with study-abroad programs. The

university has Oklahoma’s only recruiting office for the Peace Corps.

The office, located in the university’s School of International Studies, has sent more than 500 volunteers abroad to help the less fortunate.

The school even offers a unique opportunity for graduate students to pair their Peace Corps service with a master’s degree program.

OSU hosts students from all over the world. In fact, OSU’s program is most popular among international students from India, China and South Korea. In fall 2013, international students from 122 countries were on campus.

People Students tell us they chose OSU because of its people. We believe that’s why we’re here — to help students. That’s why OSU is known as one of the friendliest campuses in the country.

Our “Cowboy Family” believes in giving back to the community. OSU employees and students are vital volunteers with the United Way, Judith Karman Hospice, Stillwater Humane Society, the local Habitat for Humanity chapter, Community of Hope and many other organizations. And a huge number of OSU volunteers help the university host the largest Special Olympics summer games in the nation each year.

It may sound like a cliché, but our professors give students the keys to their future. OSU has more than 1,600 faculty members. In 2013, nearly 75 percent of them were tenured. The number of professors helps keep OSU’s student-faculty

ratio at 20:1, a relatively low number for a large state university.

Our faculty members are among the nation’s most active in research.

In 2013, OSU had more than $154 million in research spending linked to funding from the National Science Foundation.

OSU President Burns Hargis meets students and their families during Welcome Week activities. The president enjoys interacting with the OSU community every day.

They are leaders in their field, such as Royal Society physicist Girish Agarwal, and strong believers in the practice of mentorship. Many of them include inventors and patent holders, including a team of veterinary medical researchers that has secured two patents in the fight against a common but destructive disease in cattle, and a computer science professor whose two patents sprung from his research in neural networks and cryptography.

believe in the value of education as well as in their beloved OSU Cowboys and Cowgirls. They include people from all walks of life and some of the biggest names in fields from science and business to engineering and country music.

One OSU alumnus (Herman Edward Roberts) invented the personal computer. Other alumni include Oklahoma governors such as Henry Bellmon and Mary Fallin.

There are billionaire oilmen such as Boone Pickens and former astronaut Col. William Pogue. Alumni Scott Hendricks and Tim DuBois discovered the most popular duo in country music history, Brooks & Dunn.

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL HAS REPORTED THAT CORPORATE RECRUITERS BELIEVE OSU GRADS ARE THE BEST PREPARED OF ANY UNIVERSITY IN THE BIG 12.

College of Education programs are bound by a commitment to improve the lives of children, adolescents, adults, families and communities.

The College of Education The College of Education is one of the oldest colleges at OSU. Founded in 1913, it features one of Oklahoma’s top teacher instruction programs.

Nationally, OSU is consistently ranked among the top 75 of U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Education Schools.”

The education college has about 2,000 undergrads, 1,000 graduate students and about 100 faculty members in its three schools: the School of Education Studies, the School of Teaching and Curriculum Leadership and the School of Applied Health and Educational Psychology.

Its School of Education Studies prepares students for careers in education technology, educational theory, research, evaluation, measurement, statistics and aerospace, as well as leadership in public schools and universities.

Similarly, the School of Teaching and Curriculum Leadership prepares

teachers for careers in elementary, secondary, special and occupational education.

Meanwhile, School of Applied Health and Educational Psychology students study wellness fields such as leisure studies, therapeutic recreation and exercise science. Other college programs include recreation management, athletic training, physical education, health and human performance and educational psychology.

In 2013, 255 education students served more than 160,000 hours in schools and 471 put in more than 77,000 hours of field experiences and internships through their studies.

Field experience and internships are essential components of the college.

The college, which has nine accreditations and certifications, also operates centers and clinics in Stillwater and Tulsa.

But it’s not just education and health. The college has graduate programs in subjects including counseling, counseling psychology and educational psychology.

And one of its unique features is its pilot training program. OSU is one of the few places in the country where students can study to become professional pilots while getting a four-year college degree.

The college has an undergrad degree program in aerospace administration and operations and a master’s in aviation and space science. It also offers an education doctorate in applied educational studies with an option in aviation and space science.

The College of Education is engaged in research and projects about teaching and learning in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) areas. The College hosted a live NASA Downlink, affording sixth grade students the opportunity to learn about life in space and to communicate in real time with an astronaut at the International Space Station.

Place There’s no place quite like OSU. From its first building, Old Central, to the sleek, high-tech Henry Bellmon Research Center, the campus’s look and feel remains true to its roots and its mission.

OSU’s Stillwater campus, spanning 840 acres, features Neo-Georgian architecture and historic buildings such as Morrill and Murray halls, in addition to a 3.6 million-volume library.

The 640,000-square-foot Student Union was recently renovated to the tune of $63 million and features 10 restaurants, shops and is the campus’s first LEED-certified structure.

OSU’s Mendenhall Observatory houses the largest and most advanced telescope in Oklahoma.

But it’s not just about nice buildings. OSU’s Theta Pond, tree-lined walkways and gardens are frequent backdrops for dozens of alumni snapshots, memorializing trips back to the campus where they began their journey.

OSU INSTITUTE O F T E C H N O L O GY

OSUIT is in Okmulgee, a town of about 12,000 about 100 miles southeast of Stillwater. Its campus caters to technology, medical nonprofessional and technical arts students. OSUIT offers bachelor’s

degrees in technology, education and business as well as associate degrees in science and applied science. Among its unique programs are subjects such as watchmaking and culinary arts.

OSU-OKL AHOMA CIT Y

This is OSU’s largest branch campus with about 7,000 students in fall 2013.

Located in the middle of Oklahoma’s capital city, OSU-OKC offers degrees popular with professionals in the metro area, including accounting, computer information systems, wind turbine technology, nursing, graphic design and power transmission and distribution.

The second of OSU’s urban branch campuses, this one is also popular with nontraditional students and professionals looking to continue their education, as well as traditional students.

Many of its degrees are available on the main campus in Stillwater but are tailored to nontraditional

students in areas such as pre-law, management, international business, mechanical engineering and strategic communications. The campus also offers graduate degrees, including OSU’s popular master’s degree in business administration.

No major university is complete without a medical school, and OSU’s has been serving Oklahomans for decades with a focus on rural health care. Options for its more than 400 students include osteopathic medicine degrees as well as a unique

dual-degree option in osteopathic medicine and business administration. It also houses the Tulsa Police Department’s crime lab, a great asset for students in its forensic sciences school.

Its OSU Health Care Center and Physician Clinics are great learning settings for students who also provide needed health care services to the community.

Athletics We call OSU the campus of champions. You can see why when you consider that OSU teams have won 51 NCAA national championships, the most in the Big 12 and the fourth-most in the nation.

Wrestling accounts for 34 championships, many of them under two of the sport’s greatest coaches, Ed Gallagher and John Smith.

The golf team has 10 championships.

The men’s cross country team has four championships, three of them since 2009.

Under coach Henry Iba, OSU men’s basketball was the first team in the sport to win consecutive national championships. Men’s basketball returned to greatness under Iba’s pupil Eddie Sutton as the team made runs to the Final Four in 1995 and 2004. Gallagher-Iba Arena, featuring the maple floor Iba’s players used, is one of the country’s loudest venues.

Cowboy baseball has had its share of success, including boasting two of the best college players ever, Pete Incaviglia and Robin Ventura. The team has made the College World Series 19 times — fourth most in the country — and won a national title in 1959.

While they are sanctioned by associations other than the NCAA, the Cowgirl equestrian team has won five national championships since 2000.

Cowboys have claimed greatness on the gridiron, too. Barry Sanders’ 1988 Heisman Trophy may just be the best single-season performance in college football history. OSU teams have been to bowl games in all but one year in the 21st century, a run that includes a 2011 Fiesta Bowl win. Tailgating, fan activity and renovations to Boone Pickens Stadium make Cowboy football one of the most exciting tickets around.
