LETTER FROM THE OSU PRESIDENT Dear Oklahoma State University Students, We are pleased you are here at Oklahoma State University!

As a land-grant university, Oklahoma State opens its doors to all who want to pursue a college degree.

OSU offers undergraduate and graduate degrees across virtually every field of study. Students have the opportunity to learn from and work with world-class professors and researchers who provide the support needed to achieve excellence.

The OSU Student Alumni Association is leading the effort to launch a new traditions program on the Oklahoma State University campus. Our goal is to keep OSU’s traditions in the hearts and minds of all of our students, alumni and families. The Cowboy Legend should travel with you throughout your college career and be used as a guide to enhance your experiences. It highlights the many activities around campus you can complete to become an official Oklahoma State University Tradition Keeper.

There are varying levels of being a tradition keeper, depending on how many activities you attend or participate in. As you complete the traditions in this book, take a picture of yourself doing the activity or keep any mementos (i.e., ticket stub, official tradition keeper stamp, etc.), and place it in the space provided on the page. It’s fun and easy.

In fact, if you join the Student Alumni Association, you have one tradition already completed. Athletic events will have an S and art events will have an A on the pages.

About Us The OSU Alumni Association founded Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (S.T.A.T.) in the fall of 1998, which was later renamed the Student Alumni Association in 2013. It remains one of the largest student organizations on campus and is governed by the Student Alumni Board.

STUDENT ALUMNI BOARD WE ARE O-STATE!

If you ask who we are, we always respond with O-STATE. The Student Alumni Board is the governing body of the Student Alumni Association and is here to prepare the brightest student leaders on campus for leadership roles during college and beyond.

SAB Activities: Our events connect past, present and future generations of OSU Cowboys through interaction and university service. Continuing OSU traditions is at the root of all SAB activities. Opportunities to get involved on campus with SAB include: Campus Ambassadors: Student Alumni Board members are ambassadors of the university.

Opening the door of OSU hospitality for OSU alumni is a cornerstone of the Student Alumni Board. Being an ambassador includes giving special tours by arrangement and being the students’ voice for representation in the Alumni Association as well as catering to the needs of Student Alumni Association members through events and activities.

President’s Partners: Want to get to know a bit more about the president? Student Alumni Board members who are juniors or seniors are eligible to apply for this organization.

President’s Partners directly help the president’s office by hosting various events throughout the year.

Legacy Weekend: Each spring, the Student Alumni Board plans and hosts a fun, exciting weekend for students between the ages of 14 and 18 who are registered in the OSU Alumni Association Legacy program. The high school legacies get an opportunity to visit with current OSU students and get a glimpse at a day in the life of an OSU student.

Traditions: Student Alumni Board members foster a spirit of pride and tradition for our university among the student body. This is done by reinforcing current traditions and by starting our own programs such as Orange Patrol, the Cowboy Legend and participating in campus events such as the Sea of Orange Parade, Official OSU Class Ring Ceremony and the Farewell Senior Toast. For those who have had ties to OSU for generations or those who are here as the first in their family, come make some new traditions with us!

Student Alumni Association: The Student Alumni Board serves as the governing body of the Student Alumni Association. SAB designs and executes activities and events each semester for Student Alumni Association members.

Finally, SAB is the liaison between current students and the Alumni Association.

You are about to embark on one of the most memorable journeys of your life, and you’re not alone. The OSU Student Alumni Association (SAA) and the Cowboy Legend are here to ensure you make the most of your time on campus and become a True Cowboy — the best type of OSU graduate.

What does it mean to be a Cowboy? What is there to do on campus? How am I going to survive these classes? Many of you are asking yourselves these very questions, and the answers can be found within the Cowboy Legend.

The True Cowboys are Educated chapter on Page 60 highlights the helpful programs available to empower students to earn their degrees. Equally important are the people you’ll meet and the organizations, events and traditions you’ll take part in.

HISTORY

GENERAL OSU HISTORY Established on Dec. 25, 1890, Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College was spurred on by the land-grant mission to promote accessible education for all people in agriculture, science and engineering.

Oklahoma State University still fulfills that historic mission today through scholarship, instruction and service. OSU provides an exemplary public education and the chance to give back to Oklahoma and beyond through ground-breaking research, agricultural extension and community engagement. With our mission to put people first, it is no wonder that OSU is the largest institution of higher education in the state.

THANKS, MR. LINCOLN! President Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Morrill Land-Grant College Act in 1862 resulted in the establishment of two land-grant universities in the Oklahoma Territory: Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1890 (now Oklahoma State University) and the Colored Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1897 (now Langston University). The original Morrill Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Justin S. Morrill of Vermont, allotted land to each state that could be sold to fund the construction and maintenance of land-grant institutions.

The Second Morrill Act in 1890 appropriated consistent annual funding from the federal government for these colleges. With this funding, Oklahoma State University was primed to become a leader in agricultural and engineering studies. In recognition of the importance of the Morrill Act, OSU named the current home of OSU’s English Department, Morrill Hall, after Sen. Morrill.

ATHERTON HOTEL The Atherton Hotel is directly south of the Student Union on campus.

The Atherton was established in 1950 and has been hosting guests ever since. The School of Hotel and Restaurant Administration, part of OSU’s College of Human Sciences, helps ensure that the Atherton is always in tip-top condition. The students are required to work there for a semester to get real hands-on experience in the hotel business. The Atherton also has Stillwater’s finest restaurant in its attached Rancher’s Club. Next time your parents or out-of-town friends are here, book them a room at the unique and recently remodeled Atherton and grab dinner at the Rancher’s Club for an exquisite evening.

BEDLAM AND THE BELL The year was 1965. Oklahoma State hadn’t beaten the University of Oklahoma football team in 20 years and 10 days. With only three seconds left on the game clock and a fourth down and two yards to go, the Cowboys were down, 14-16. Charlie Durkee came onto the field and kicked a field goal to win the game as time expired. The goal posts in Norman were torn down, and the Pokes were presented with a trophy they had not held in over two decades: the Old Central bell clapper. The clapper was stolen by the Sooners after they were shut out in the 1932 game, and from that point on, the clapper was given to the winner of the Bedlam game. The 1965 OSU team that reclaimed the clapper was rewarded by then-President Oliver S. Willham, who agreed to cancel all classes the Monday after the victory.

OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM Many students don’t realize Oklahoma State University’s branches extend well beyond Stillwater. OSU is a multicampus public land-grant educational system with campuses in Tulsa and Oklahoma City as well as the Institute of Technology in Okmulgee and the Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa. The 77-point star represents Oklahoma’s 77 counties, and the five rings around the seal represent the five OSU campuses.

CHA-CHING If you’ve been on campus for a while, you’ve probably had to use a parking meter at one time or another. At OSU, our parking meters help regulate parking and stand as a tribute to students and professors who helped create the first parking meter. The idea for the parking meter came to Oklahoman Carl C. Magee, who filed for a patent for his idea in 1932 and partnered with the OSU Engineering Department to develop viable prototypes. By 1935, Magee and his Aggie team’s invention had alleviated many parking troubles in nearby Oklahoma City, and soon parking meters would be found nationwide.

AG PLOTS OSU is home to some of the nation’s elite wheat research, and much of this can be attributed to the Magruder plots — the oldest continuous soil fertility wheat experiment west of the Mississippi River. Magruder began his soil fertility experiment in 1892 in a field where Stout Hall currently stands. In 1947, when campus construction threatened to end the experiment, 16 inches of subsoil was dug up and transplanted a half-mile to its current location at the Agronomy Research Station off Western Road where the experiment continues to this day. OSU has since expanded wheat research to many more plots scattered across the entire state.

THE ROYALTY OF CAMPUS In the time of the Redskin, OSU’s yearbook, young women across campus eagerly awaited their chance to be named a Redskin Beauty.

Each year, OSU held a campuswide beauty contest to determine the Beauties. Women were first selected by their academic college, living group or student organization as a Queen. Approximately 50 candidates then went through an interview to determine who had the most poise, personality and, of course, photogenic ability. The field would be narrowed down to 15 finalists who went through another contest to determine who would be the six Redskin Beauties of the year. Winners gained the title of Redskin Beauty as well as a full-page picture in the yearbook. The Beauties were also honored during the Homecoming parades on large, elaborate floats built by the students.

SPIRIT DRUM OSU is home to what was once the largest drum in existence. At sixfoot-one in diameter, the “Big Spirit Drum” required eight cadets to lug it across the field at home football games. The giant orange-andblack drum was purchased in 1933 by the ROTC, but it has changed possession many times since. After more than 80 years, the Spirit Drum is still the fourth-largest drum in the United States. Occasionally, the drum will make a special appearance at OSU events, but it has found a more permanent home in the OSU Library’s special collection.

ARMY ROTC Army ROTC has a rich history here at Oklahoma State. When the Morrill Act created the university, Army ROTC was one of the first student programs on campus because it maintained the “military training” requirement of the Morrill Act. This program was mandatory for all male students. When we entered the Great War, OSU sent several ROTC cadets overseas to serve our country. When we entered into World War II, Oklahoma A&M became a military establishment. The federal government called all advanced ROTC students into active duty. By the spring of 1943, the streets on campus were filled with men and women in uniform. In 1958, Oklahoma State had more than 2,000 veterans on campus from either World War II or the Korean War. In 1965, the ROTC program was no longer mandatory. Oklahoma State students were always very supportive of the troops. To this day, Army ROTC remains an active and important part of OSU’s students and community. Although we may know them for the push-ups they perform at the home football games, they serve a vital role to the campus and to our country.

WORLDWIDE LEGENDS — OUR FAMOUS COACHES Edward C. Gallagher started Oklahoma State University on its road to greatness in wrestling when he put his first Aggie varsity wrestling team on the mat in 1916. He guided the Cowboys to national prominence with their first National Amateur Athletic Union title in 1925 and NCAA National title in 1928. His legendary coaching has established a strong winning tradition that has gained OSU national and international recognition. In 23 years of coaching, Gallagher produced 19 undefeated teams. His wrestlers won 138 dual meets, tied four and lost only five.

During the 10 years prior to 1932, his teams scored 70 consecutive victories. He coached in 13 NCAA tournaments, capturing 11 national titles. Individually, Gallagher guided 37 NCAA champions, 32 national amateur titlists and three Olympic gold medalists. Internationally, 15 Cowboys he coached were members of the U.S. Olympic teams. He was named Olympic wrestling coach in 1932 and 1936. He was a pioneer, not only of wrestling techniques but also of wrestling tradition. OSU holds the record for the most national championships in any sport, and that is directly because of Coach Gallagher.

Coach Henry Iba arrived at Oklahoma A&M in 1934. He coached basketball for 36 years, baseball for six years and was the athletic director for 31 years. Coach Iba led the Cowboys to become the first team to win back-to-back national championships in 1945 and 1946. He revolutionized the defense that is known today as man-to-man defense.

OSU won 19 championships while Coach Iba was athletic director. In 1964 and 1968, Coach Iba led the USA Olympic basketball team to a gold medal, becoming the first USA basketball coach to win back-to-back championships. Oklahoma State honored the phenomenal coach in 1987 by renaming Gallagher Hall, to Gallagher-Iba Arena and having a seat in the southeast concourse level eternally saved for him. This is known as “Mr. Iba’s Seat.” Coach Iba passed away on Jan. 15, 1993, in Stillwater. Exactly 12 years later, Eddie Sutton would pass Coach Iba on the all-time career wins list with 768. That same day, Oklahoma State dedicated the court to Eddie Sutton. With the court still using the same original white maple floor as when it was built, it is one of the oldest and most-heralded courts in college basketball.

MASCOT AND LOGO HISTORY

Oklahoma A&M College first adopted Princeton University’s Tiger mascot and school colors of orange and black, symbolically opening the “Princeton of the Prairie.” But as time went on, the Tigers and subsequent Aggies longed for a new mascot that would be more befitting. In local newspapers, reporters were beginning to refer to Stillwater’s teams as the Cowboys. An answer to the new mascot question came in the form of Frank Eaton, a gun-slinging U.S. marshal and cowboy who was in the 1923 Stillwater Armistice Day Parade. He agreed to be the model for the new mascot, Pistol Pete, which was his nickname. In 1926, Athletic Director Edward C. Gallagher introduced the name “Cowboys” by having 2,000 balloons printed for sale that said “Oklahoma Aggies – Ride ’em, Cowboy.” In 1957, Pistol Pete and the Cowboys were officially adopted as our school’s mascot and team name when Oklahoma A&M College changed its name to Oklahoma State University.

LOST TRADITIONS STAY CLASSY, STILLWATER The “Strip” on Washington Street is well-known today for its stores, bars and nightlife entertainment, but in the 1970s, the Strip was known partly for a different reason.

During the ’70s, the fad of streaking came alive at college campuses across the United States. “Streakers’ Nights” were common on the Strip as thousands of students would crowd Washington Street to drink beer and attempt to catch a glimpse of anyone brave enough to bare it all. On the original Streakers’ Night in 1974, naked students rode the fake bull from Sirloin Stockade (then located on Washington) down the street and into Theta Pond. On Streakers’ Nights to come, usually only a couple dozen streakers would run down Washington since a heavy police force was present to deter indecent behavior. okla.st/striphistory - 1970s streakers’ night; “Strip Night! SAY HOWDY! The Howdy Dance is one of the oldest traditions at Oklahoma State University. It has been around since the 1920s when students and alumni would greet each other with the friendly western term, “Howdy!” The tradition of greeting fellow Cowboys with “Howdy!” has been lost to time, but the Howdy Dance lives on during Welcome Week. It symbolizes the good-natured and warm welcome all freshmen receive when they begin their academic careers at Oklahoma State.

DON’T DO IT! In Oklahoma A&M’s early days, Theta Pond was always the center of activity. But most freshmen on campus became more aware of the pond after dark. It was an annual tradition for the upperclassmen to throw the freshmen into the pond for their initiation into the university, known as “ponding.” It also was not unusual for someone who just got engaged to receive the traditional ponding. These days, even the slightest dip in Theta Pond could result in a $400 fine, so don’t even think about it!

SERIOUS COWBOYS Once upon a time, Oklahoma State students took the nickname “Cowboys” more seriously. A favorite tradition of students past was to dress up in cowboy attire for the entire Homecoming week, appropriately called “Western Week.”

MEMORIES CAPTURED FOR A LIFETIME The Redskin yearbook was started in 1910 to highlight student achievement and recognize the graduating class. The tradition remained popular for more than 80 years before dying in the early ’90s. Want to find a picture of an old relative who attended OSU? FRESHMAN ACTIVITES Being a freshman at Oklahoma State has gotten a little easier in recent years. As a rite of passage, freshmen of the 1930s were required to participate in initiation events ranging from paddle lines to impromptu, middle-of-the night pajama parades judged by the sophomores. There were also inter-class rivalries; for example, underclassmen often competed against upperclassmen in tug-of-war contests and even had races to see which class could push a giant ball across campus the fastest.

College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources — CASNR Roundup is an opportunity for CASNR Clubs and organizations to showcase their activities to encourage participation. It is always held the second Wednesday after classes begin.

College of Arts & Sciences — Arts & Sciences Week is held each fall to help students explore academic, financial and social opportunities within the college. Arts & Sciences Week concludes with the Autumn Arts Gala, a showcase of student work from the Arts & Sciences humanities programs.

College of Education — The college hosts a Spotlight event during Welcome Week, where students get to know faculty and staff in the college, learn about their home college and major and take home COE giveaways.

College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology — CEAT Week is held each spring to connect students with all aspects of engineering, architecture and technology.

CEAT Student Council hosts the event with a variety of activities, free food and seminars.

College of Human Sciences — “My 1st Tradition” medallion ceremony is held the week before classes start. Students are immersed in the college’s rich traditions and presented with a new medallion. While the medallion ceremony is a unique introduction to the college, many other activities and events are held to encourage students to become actively engaged in their academic careers.

Spears School of Business — Freshmen Business Student Leaders (FBSL) should be your first business organization. This group serves as a preview to all of the student organizations in the school and will help you create relationships with your peers and build your résumé and network, all while helping you find your niche at OSU.

MORTAR BOARD GET ON BOARD

So how exactly do people keep track of their crazy college schedule? They write everything in their Mortar Board calendars, of course! At the start of every school year, the Mortar Board Honor Society publishes a calendar filled with event dates for organizations here at OSU. You can purchase your Mortar Board from the University Store or from any Mortar Board member. Founded in 1930 by 12 senior women, Mortar Board is one of the oldest honor societies at OSU. The OSU chapter adopted the name “Achafoa,” which means “a few rare, precious ones.” Along with the traditional calendars, Mortar Board sponsors the annual selection of the OSU Top Ten Freshman Men and Women and seeks to promote scholarship, leadership and service on campus and in the community.

Oklahoma State serves. In fact, the university’s commitment to service is noted on the academic seal where “service” is one of three words listed. Every year, thousands of students participate in “Into the Streets,” held in the fall, and “Big Event,” held in the spring. At these events, groups of students head into the community to serve at predetermined job sites. There are many other ways to get involved such as coaching a little league soccer team or becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister. SGA SPEAKERS BOARD FRONT-ROW SEAT FOR THE VIPS

If you have the desire to be in the same room as someone famous or hear from monumental speakers of our time, the Speakers Board at Oklahoma State can help.

This committee of student representatives brings influential leaders and celebrities to campus every year. Admission to hear these speakers is free for all students and allows them the opportunity to get an up-close experience with people they may never have the chance to see anywhere else. Some of the recent speakers are Rainn Wilson (Dwight on The Office), Peyton Manning, Shaquille O’Neal and former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

Trivia Tidbit — The SGA Speakers Board is allocated more than $100,000 annually to bring celebrity speakers to OSU. “Science Guy” Bill Nye drew one of the largest Speakers Board crowds, with 6,500 people in attendance.

Since April 1915, the Student Government Association at OSU has served students who love leadership and politics or want to make their voices heard. At the head of this organization are the SGA president and vice president. Each spring, elections for these offices take place. From signs and chalking to debates, the candidates go head-to-head for the opportunity to represent the student body. The process takes about two weeks, leading up to the two days of online voting. This is one of the major opportunities for every student at OSU to have a voice in the leadership of campus.

Oklahoma State is a home away from home for nearly 2,000 international students who represent more than 100 countries around the world. Every year, the International Student Organization (ISO) hosts several events to unite OSU’s international students such as Cultural Night, International Olympics and International Bazaar. OSU also sponsors the Cowboy Cousins program, where international students are paired with American students to attend social events and promote cultural exchange.

SIT BACK AND ENJOY THE SHOW

A

Varsity Revue began in 1929 as a fundraiser for the Cowboy Marching Band and is Oklahoma State’s longest-running performance event. Since it was formed, the event has evolved into a full-scale competition between male and female pairings to see who can create the best 11-minute song and dance production. As a product of VR’s success, two other production shows have been added: Spring Sing in 1966 and Freshman Follies in 1970.

THETA POND PICTURE PERFECT

Theta Pond, built in 1895, has seen well over a century’s worth of students walk past its banks. It took its current name from the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, which was once located across the street. The pond originally served as a place for students to tie up their horses while they attended class. Theta Pond has seen its fair share of horseplay over the years, hosting many tug-of-war games with the losing team plunging into the water upon defeat. More recently, the pond has become the home for OSU’s duck and goose population. Grab a friend and a few slices of bread, and continue the tradition of feeding Theta’s fowl friends. But watch out — Momma Duck is awfully protective of her little ones! Be sure to get a picture.

It is not uncommon to see many students take advantage of good weather by playing all kinds of sports such as quidditch or Frisbee on the lawn. In April 2011, the Library Lawn was also host to a Guinness World Record for the biggest Twister game that featured a Twister board with more than 15,000 spray-painted dots.

EDMON LOW LIBRARY STUDY, STUDY, SCHOOL IS YOUR BUDDY

The Edmon Low Library, the crown jewel of President Henry Bennett’s vision, has stood elegantly as the focal point of campus for more than half a century now.

Rumor has it President Bennett actually moved the stakes himself the night before construction began to make the building larger and stand out from Life Sciences East and Engineering South. Students have flocked to the stately building ever since it opened in 1953 to study, read, print, meet or even nap. With six floors of study space, there is room to find your nook and buckle down on some schoolwork.

The sound of bells permeates campus on the 20, 30 and top of every hour — but the bells aren’t really bells. The original chime system, installed in 1953, went electronic in the late ’70s. It was replaced by an entirely digital system in 1993, which plays bell sounds through a team of high-powered loud speakers. The digital system is programmed to change time automatically for daylight saving and even ring out holiday favorites toward the end of each fall semester.

CHI-O CLOCK

OSU’S GRAND CENTRAL STATION When viewed just right, the Chi-O Clock between the Student Union and Classroom Building looks like an owl, the mascot of Chi Omega Sorority. The Tau Beta chapter of Chi Omega gave the clock to the university in 1970 to honor the sorority’s national 75th anniversary. Since then, the clock has become a popular landmark and place for student organizations to set up informational booths and hand out food or fliers.

STUDENT UNION MEET AT THE UNION

OSU’s 543,411-square-foot Student Union featuring the luxurious Atherton Hotel, University Store and a barbershop, was picked as America’s “Most Amazing Student Union” in 2013. The building is truly a onestop shop for just about anything a student could need. Some students go their entire time at the university without scratching the surface of what the “most comprehensive student union in the world” has to offer. Meet up with some friends to study, have a bite to eat, go shopping, get a haircut, play hide-andseek, watch television or explore the building and its countless services.

BENNETT CHAPEL A PLACE TO REFLECT

Don’t overlook exploring Bennett Chapel. The building was constructed on the site of the former university president’s house. It was named in honor of President Henry Bennett and his wife, Vera, who were killed in a plane crash in Iran in 1951. The quaint venue has seen many Cowboy weddings and provided a place of solace for thousands over the years. You can also find the Malaysian 24 Seasons Drum Troupe practicing there many afternoons.

DONALD W. REYNOLDS ARCHITECTURE BUILDING CHANGING THROUGH THE YEARS

The Architecture Building OSU students know today began life in 1919 as Oklahoma A&M’s first campus gymnasium. The term Bedlam was coined within its walls, thanks to Coach Edward S. Gallagher’s wrestling teams and raucous matches with the University of Oklahoma. The original plan was for the building to serve solely as the school’s gymnasium, but at the time, the U.S. was running very low on steel. So when school officials told the federal government that it would be the armory, they were granted access to more steel. Because this building runs east and west, it forced the construction of the football field to also run east and west, which goes against most other college football fields. In the early 1970s, the building was transformed for the School of Architecture, and in 2009, a $23 million renovation and expansion was completed. This new facility features thermal glass walls, a natural lighting system and various state-of-the-art technology features. The building has won many awards for its culture and studio space. This beautiful building is north of the intersection of University and Hester between the Student Union and Old Central. The building opened in the fall of 2005 and is the headquarters of the OSU Alumni Association.

OLD CENTRAL THE BIRTHPLACE OF OSU

Old Central was constructed in 1894 for $25,000 and housed the entirety of Oklahoma A&M College. Before the building was completed, classes were held in local churches. While Old Central is an icon on campus today, it was scheduled for demolition several times. Old Central is the oldest higher education building in use in the state and today houses the Honors College.

Trivia Tidbit — The bell in Old Central used to be rung after OSU athletic victories. In 1932, OU stole the bell clapper after losing the Bedlam football game, in hopes of avoiding having the loss rubbed in by the clanging of the bell. However, inventive OSU students clanged the bell with a sledgehammer to announce the Cowboys’ Bedlam victory.

Oklahoma State University prides itself on the artistic abilities of its students. With the Gardiner Art Gallery on campus, students can attend free art events, thanks to student fee coverage. In January 2014, OSU extended its outreach for the arts by converting the Stillwater Postal Plaza on Husband Street into the OSU Museum of Art, which houses the permanent collection of art and teaching museum for students. HENRY BENNETT STATUE LEGENDAY LEADER

President Henry G. Bennett started teaching in the small Oklahoma town of Boswell in 1908 at the age of 22. After working in various aspects of the education field, Dr. Bennett became president of Oklahoma A&M in 1928. He continued to serve as president even after being appointed by President Harry S. Truman to lead the Point Four program overseas. One of President Bennett’s most memorable actions at Oklahoma A&M was establishing a campus master plan that is still being carried out today. The plan featured the beginning of the modified-Georgian architecture the campus is known for. A statue of President Bennett is located on the east side of Whitehurst Hall outside the president’s office overlooking Library Lawn.

The International Mall, located between the Noble Research Center and the Edmon Low Library, is home to 18 flagpoles. When international students matriculate at OSU, the Office of International Studies and Outreach obtains the flag for the student’s home country, and flies these flags 18 at a time on the Mall. Flags are rotated in and out every few months. Nearly 165 countries have been represented at Oklahoma State. The mall was dedicated to international students in 1966, and in 1971, a monument of peace was added to the courtyard by the International Student Association. COLVIN RECREATION AND SERETEAN WELLNESS CENTERS AMERICA’S HEALTHIEST CAMPUS

When the Colvin Center was built in 1969, it was only 150,000 square feet and cost $3.3 million. After a $23 million renovation in 2004, the Colvin is now 240,000 square feet. It features many of today’s top workout facilities and is a great place to stay fit, play games with friends, or hang out by the pool. The Colvin is equipped with 10 basketball/ volleyball courts, eight racquetball courts, a four-hole putting green, two state-of-the-art golf simulators, a 25-yard indoor pool, an outdoor pool with whirlpool and volleyball net, 3,000-square-foot cardio style theater with 12 HDTVs, a 25-foot climbing wall, 5,500 square feet of wood exercise floors, 9,500 square feet of weights, 30 acres of lighted fields, four sand volleyball courts and much more. The Seretean Wellness Center sits adjacent to the Colvin Center. Here, students can engage in physical fitness and nutrition training as well as receive personalized health and wellness assessments.

ADVICE FROM UPPER CLASSMEN — THINGS TO AVOID THESE BOOTS AREN’T MADE FOR DRIVING | PARKING TICKETS Parking tickets are, unfortunately, something most students encounter at some point during their time at OSU. Those 30-minute parking spots are exactly 30 minutes, and you can guarantee that a parking attendant will be ticketing your car on the 31st minute. Pay attention to physical plant and staff parking. It is probably a good idea to memorize the different zones and what sticker colors mean what. It’s completely normal to receive a few tickets in your four years, but watch out! After the third ticket, you will find an iron boot on your vehicle!

CAFFEINE | PULLING AN ALL-NIGHTER Ideally, we would all be expert time managers and have our schoolwork finished by 7 p.m. every day. But that just isn’t reality. If you find yourself pulling an all-nighter to finish the paper that is due at 8:30 the next morning, don’t worry; many students have been in your shoes. We don’t advise you to do this, mind you, and there are several ways to study without pulling that all-nighter. Pulling an all-nighter has been shown to have adverse effects on memory, focus and other cognitive functions. Avoid all-nighters, if at all possible. Three hours of sleep is better than zero hours of sleep.

ROAD RAGE AT ITS FINEST | UNIVERSITY TRAFFIC OSU’s campus has two-lane streets. And yes, you will find 5 o’clock traffic does exist.

Imagine professors, students, staff members, parents and Stillwater townies all trying to navigate these roads at the same time — it turns into long lines and chaos. Try to avoid such main roads as University, Hall of Fame, Perkins and Monroe at peak travel times. Try to leave 15-10 minutes early before you have to be somewhere to ensure you will make it to your destination in a timely manner.

PLAYING TO WIN | PEAK TIMES AT THE COLVIN Being healthy, playing Intramurals and getting fit are a few reasons OSU students and faculty go to the Colvin Recreational Center. But make sure to avoid the Colvin at certain times. The beginning of each semester, the Colvin is packed with students trying to maintain an active lifestyle during school, but after a few weeks the numbers dwindle. Try to avoid going around 7-8 a.m. and 5-6 p.m. — when most people work the Colvin into their schedule. Trust us when we say it’s easier to work out when the entire student body isn’t watching you.

WAVING SONG KI YI! KI YE!

Nearly every Oklahoma State sporting event includes a performance of the “Waving Song.”

During the song, OSU fans wave one arm from side to side over their heads. The song and motion are also performed after every score during OSU football games. While many believe the song and motion are referencing waving wheat and Oklahoma’s state song, this is actually a common misconception.

The song, originally titled “In Old New York,” was brought to Oklahoma A&M by speech instructor H.G. Seldombridge, who heard it in an operetta he saw in New York City called The Red Mill. In 1908, Seldombridge crafted his own lyrics to the song and used it to close a college follies production at the Stillwater Opera House. He taught the song to lettermen from each sport, who spontaneously added a sway and waving arm motion as they sang, “OAMC! OAMC! We’ll sing your praise tonight!” The crowd in attendance was deeply moved, and everyone stood and began to wave back. Two encores followed, and the TAKE A PICTURE OF YOU WAVING song plus the waving motion have been IN CELEBRATION HERE. an OSU tradition ever since.

THE WALK GET THERE EARLY

Two hours before kickoff, Hester Street is the place to see the Cowboy football team and coaches emerge from the Student Union for the Spirit Walk. The head football coach and the team are led to Boone Pickens Stadium by Pistol Pete, the OSU Spirit Squad and the Cowboy Marching Band’s drum line. A sea of orange, with Cowboy fans eagerly lining both sides of the street, greets the players. This tradition began in 2003 and has become an important game day event.

PISTOL PETE OOOOOOOOOOOO…

Here at OSU, we have the toughest mascot in the West in Pistol Pete. In 1923, Oklahoma A&M replaced its first mascot, the tiger, with the man behind today’s mascot, Frank Eaton.

Eaton earned the nickname “Pistol Pete” because of his gun slinging and marksmanship skills, which he used as a U.S. marshal. Eaton served as the live mascot for OSU for 37 years.

When he passed away in 1958, Charlie Lester became the first student to sport the nowfamous Pistol Pete head. Nowadays, OSU selects two students to appear at more than 500 OSU events combined every year as Pistol Pete. Pistol Pete is more than simply an icon of Cowboy pride; he symbolizes a legendary legacy rooted deep in the heart of Oklahoma State University.

Trivia Tidbits — The easiest way to tell the two Petes apart is by the color of the bandana poking from their back pockets: one wears white; the other wears orange.

Each Pistol Pete head weighs 35-40 pounds. They were designed by the Walt Disney Co. Each head is insured for $20,000.

The revolvers Pistol Pete carries are authentic registered Ruger Blackhawk .357 Magnums.

Though not as old as the “Waving Song,” OSU’s fight song was created right here in Stillwater.

Oklahoma A&M music faculty member John K. Long composed the tune, and alumnus Edgar Ward (Class of 1935) wrote the lyrics. The original ending of the song included the words: “Cross that goal, then we’ll sing OAMC!” This referred to the “Waving Song” and its original lyrics: “OAMC, OAMC, we’ll sing your praise tonight!”

When the university’s name was changed in 1957, the OSU Chant was added to the end of the fight song.

ALMA MATER LOYAL AND TRUE

No OSU tradition is more moving than the singing of our Alma Mater. It was selected following a contest in 1957 when our school’s name was changed to Oklahoma State University. Robert McCulloh is credited with composing the tune and writing its powerful lyrics.

At the conclusion of practically any OSU function, students and alumni throw their arms around whomever they are standing beside and sing the Alma Mater while swaying back and forth. At the end of most sporting events, the teams will stay on the field/court and sing the Alma Mater with the students and alumni. The Alma Mater is also played once a day on the Edmon Low Library carillon.

Although singing the Alma Mater can be explained on paper, it can never be truly understood until you take part in it.

AMERICA’S At Oklahoma State, we mean it when we say we are home to “America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration.”

Homecoming began more than a century ago with the first Harvest Carnival in 1913, but the OSU Alumni Association hosted our first official Homecoming celebration in 1920. Homecoming has grown into a full week of festivities and spirit designed to bring together every member of the OSU family including students, alumni and fans. Each Homecoming celebration takes months of preparation by the Homecoming Executive team, steering committees, student body and the entire OSU community. ORANGE FOUNTAIN LET THE TRADITIONS BEGIN

Homecoming week begins with the Homecoming Executive team pouring orange dye into the Edmon Low Library fountain. The fountain flows orange for the rest of Homecoming week and bolsters students’ already strong sense of school spirit. The tradition of dyeing the library fountain began in 1999 when Travis Brorsen (who later went on to win CBS’ America’s Greatest Dog contest), a member of the Homecoming Steering Committee, implemented it with the OSU Physical Plant.

HARVEST CARNIVAL HOMECOMING FOR THE KIDS

“America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration” can be traced back to the first Harvest Carnival in 1913. Now, various student organizations, residential halls and Greek chapters create fun games and booths in a carnival just for kids. Entrance into Harvest Carnival requires a donation of one canned food item for Harvest II. Come see students dressed in festive costumes, and have fun with future Cowboys and Cowgirls. We hope to keep the oldest part of Homecoming going for years to come!

In conjunction with Harvest Carnival, OSU students bring their best chili recipes to the forefront. For a small admission fee, you can taste more than 30 different chilies and place your vote for people’s choice.

THE GREATEST TRADITION OF THEM ALL OSU’s Walkaround is widely regarded as the most famous tradition of “America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration.” The traditional house decorations began in the 1920s when sororities began decorating their doorways for a crowd of about 90 Oklahoma A&M alumni. Now almost a century later, more than 80,000 OSU alumni, students and friends reunite during the massive spectacle of Walkaround. As the sun sets, roam the transformed campus to view the residential life decorations. Make your way by Library Lawn to snap some pictures by the orange fountain, orange reflection at Theta Pond and Homecoming signs. As night falls, enjoy live music and tasty treats as you join tens of thousands meandering through the Greek neighborhood to view a dozen larger-than-life pomped house decorations. Of all the traditions at Oklahoma State, Walkaround is the top one to experience firsthand.

Since 1930, one fall morning in Stillwater has been dedicated to Homecoming’s Sea of Orange Parade. Stillwater’s Main Street comes to life with a swarm of OSU alumni and friends. Student and community organizations, residential halls and Greek chapters create elaborate parade floats for the occasion. A typical parade will feature more than 100 entries making their way from 12th Street to Hall of Fame.

The final stage of Homecoming at Oklahoma State is the game itself. This is where all of the months of hard work and anticipation for everything Homecoming is put into trophy form, and the winners of all of the activities are announced. Alumni and students pack the stadium, excited for the game. As halftime approaches, all the groups gather in anticipation of hearing their names called during the winners’ presentations. From house decorations to the parade floats and Homecoming king and queen, yells will erupt as the announcer says the first syllable of a group’s name.

All of the magic of Homecoming closes for the year at the game, and many begin to anticipate the next Homecoming one year away.

Trivia Tidbit — Recognize that familiar voice over the PA system? That’s Larry Reece, who has been announcing OSU football and basketball games for more than 20 years.

Don’t miss his catch phrases like “Here Comes Bullet!”

Game days in Stillwater are rowdy affairs. Following the Spirit Walk and a few hours of tailgating, a sea of orange Cowboy fans flood in the gates of Boone Pickens Stadium.

The student sections start churning, and it’s time for fight songs and pregame fanfare. Pistol Pete storms onto the field riding his OSU Gator and fires his shotgun to set off roaring OSU chants. The Cowboy Marching Band moves 300 members onto the field where they suddenly split to allow Bullet to gallop through. The pregame video blasts onto the stadium’s video screens with the familiar warning, “You tell ’em I’m coming! And hell’s coming with me, ya hear? Hell’s coming with me!” A gate swings open, and the team stampedes out of the billowing fog, the stadium in chaotic pandemonium. After a minute of reverent silence for the National Anthem, the only sounds that can be heard are the roar of the crowd and a jangling of keys to signal the kickoff. It’s game day in Stillwater, and Cowboy fans are rocking Boone Pickens Stadium.

THE BEDLAM SERIES BEAT OU!

OSU teams play the Sooners more than 25 times every school year across many sports in what is known as the Bedlam Series, one of the nation’s greatest rivalries.

The school with the most wins at the end of the school year claims the Bedlam Series title and holds bragging rights for the next year. Oklahoma State students have traditionally supported the Cowboys in their football and basketball endeavors versus the Sooners, but smaller sports sometimes get overlooked.

Trivia Tidbits — The basement of GallagherIba Arena once served as a shooting range for the OSU ROTC. OSU wrestlers have been in every Olympic Games in which the U.S. competed in since 1924.

WINTER SPORTS

GALLAGHER-IBA ARENA: THE MADISON SQUARE GARDEN OF THE PLAINS S The 4-H Club and Student Activity Building was built in 1938 for $1.5 million. It was renamed Gallagher Hall in honor of Oklahoma A&M wrestling coach Edward S. Gallagher.

In 1987, the fieldhouse was renovated, and the Board of Regents added Iba to the building’s name in honor of legendary basketball coach Henry Iba. In January 2005, Eddie Sutton passed Iba with the most wins (more than 800) in school history and was honored by having the court named after him. Underneath the court is a 30,000-square-foot strength and conditioning facility. The arena still has its original white maple court, which was one of the most expensive in the country when it was installed. It is also home to more national championships than any other facility in America. The arena’s capacity is 13,611.

SPECIAL RESERVED SEATING IN GIA THE SACRED SEATS

Ed Gallagher and Henry Iba are perhaps the two largest figures in Oklahoma State’s rich athletic tradition. Coach Gallagher is the father of modern-day collegiate wrestling, and Mr. Iba revolutionized basketball with the creation of man-to-man defense. Gallagher-Iba Arena is named for these two legendary individuals, and they have permanent seats reserved for them in the southeast corner of the arena on the concourse. After Mr. Iba retired from coaching, he would often return to watch practices and sit near this location in what was the time the highest row in the old fieldhouse. It is understood no fan is to sit in either of the seats.

One of Oklahoma State’s best-kept secrets is the world-class Karsten Creek golf course, located six miles west of town on State Highway 51. This course was honored as Golf Digest’s “Best New Course” when it opened in 1994. On Jan. 27, 2001, 10 men associated with the Oklahoma State Cowboy basketball program lost their lives in a plane crash in Colorado following a game against the Colorado Buffaloes. These men were honored with a memorial in the southwest lobby of Gallagher-Iba Arena and a memorial near the crash site in Colorado. Visit the Remember the 10 Memorial in Gallagher-Iba to learn about our fallen Cowboys, and honor their legacy by participating in the annual Remember the 10 Run every April.

A similar tragedy occurred Nov. 17, 2011. Head women’s basketball coach Kurt Budke, assistant coach Miranda Serna, alumnus and former state Sen. Olin Branstetter and his wife, Paula, were killed in a plane crash in central Arkansas. During the holiday season, Chi-O Clock turns into a memorial for the four and features four custom wreaths.

Want to see the 2012 Fiesta Bowl trophy in person? How about Pistol Pete’s first paper-maché head or Frank Eaton’s personal rifle? All of these items and many more are on display in Gallagher-Iba’s Heritage Hall, the museum for Oklahoma State Athletics. The museum opened in 2001 following the expansion of the arena and contains more than a century’s worth of treasures from our athletic program.

NATIONAL WRESTLING HALL OF FAME

THE NATION’S CRADLE OF WRESTLING In 1976, USA Wrestling, the organization overseeing U.S. wrestling, wanted to build a national hall of fame.

They considered multiple sites, including Stillwater.

Myron Roderick, the Hall of Fame president at the time, arranged a deal with OSU President Robert Kamm. Kamm deeded OSU’s land at the corner of Hall of Fame Avenue and Duck Street for 99 years to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for only $1. Melvin Jones, a prominent OSU Hall of Fame member, raised the funds to build the facility. Stillwater presented the committee with land and funds before any competing cities had the opportunity.

Annually, 7,000 to 10,000 wrestling fans come from across the globe to visit the Hall of Fame. Each year, the Hall of Fame hosts the enshrinement ceremonies, which induct new honorees into the Hall of Fame.

With 31 former OSU National wrestling Hall of Famers, OSU holds the record for the most alumni inducted.

Trivia Tidbit — The world’s oldest manual for ANY sport is located in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. The document, dated from 100 to 200 A.D., was discovered in Egypt and provides wrestling instructions. Although it was originally excavated

by British archaeologists, it was eventually donated to the Hall of Fame.

BOTANIC GARDEN STAY ON THE PATH

Need a study break or maybe just a little quiet time? Stop by the OSU Botanic Garden just west of Stillwater on State Highway 51. The 100-acre garden is beautifully landscaped with more than 1,000 species of plants. Take a stroll through the garden, and experience the relaxation it provides countless students and Stillwater residents year round. The Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture created the garden as a massive teaching and research lab to be used by students and the USDA. To this day, the Botanic Graden is maintained by the university’s horticulture and landscape architecture program.

Boomer Lake, just a short drive north of campus on Washington Street, has been a place for Oklahoma State students to escape the academic grind for decades.

Regardless of the time of year, there are students out at the lake daily using the threemile running trail, playing disc golf, swinging on the playground or having a picnic.

Boomer Lake also features a Veteran’s Memorial on an east peninsula. Head out to the lake with a group of friends or by yourself, and take in what Boomer has to offer.

STILLWATER’S JUMPIN’ LITTLE JUKE JOINT Eskimo Joe’s is without a doubt Stillwater’s most well-known attraction. In fact, the establishment’s cheese fries have attracted both Bush presidents, Garth Brooks, Jimmy Fallon and many other celebrities since Joe’s opened in 1975. Joe’s milkshakes have also been featured on the Food Network’s show Unwrapped. Outside of its food, Joe’s is recognized around the world by its logo and very popular t-shirts. Order a plate of cheese fries to share with a buddy, or just eat them all yourself — with a side of ranch dressing, of course.

HIDEAWAY PIZZA ONE PLANET, ONE PIZZA

If you ask students where the best pizza is in Stillwater, chances are they will respond with Hideaway Pizza. Stillwater native Richard Dermer and his wife Marti, opened the first Hideaway restaurant next to campus in 1957, and it rapidly became a successful campus eating hotspot. During the 1960s and ’70s, Hideaway used decorated VW “bugs” to deliver pizzas. With all the popularity, Dermer agreed in the 1990s to expand the Hideaway to locations beyond Stillwater while maintaining a fun working environment and friendly eating atmosphere. Hideaway has been going strong for more than 50 years spreading its message of “One Planet, One Pizza!” Be sure to stop in for a slice of Stillwater’s finest pizza.

BLAME IT ALL ON MY ROOTS… Ask students where to find the best nightlife in Stillwater, and many will answer the “Strip”. This trademark of Stillwater spans Washington Street between University Avenue and 6th Street. Named for the streaking fad of the 1970s, the Strip has been home to a variety of businesses. Now, the Strip is a popular destination for anyone looking to grab a quick bite to eat, do some gift shopping or find great entertainment at some of Stillwater’s favorite places. Stop by Willie’s Saloon where Garth Brooks, the All-American Rejects and many red dirt music artists got their start, and spend part of your night under the orange palm trees of J.R. Murphy’s.

Most importantly, you can’t visit the Strip without trying a good, old-fashioned hotdog or fried onion burger from Coney Island. Oklahoma State students have been making their way to Coney Island to get their coney dog fix for a long time now — more than 44 years, actually. Whether it’s 2 a.m. on a Friday or lunchtime on a Tuesday, enjoying a Coney Island hotdog at least once during college is a must.

AMERICA’S DRIVE-IN Looking for a tasty meal of American fast-food classics? Head over to your closest Sonic Drive-In for “Service at the Speed of Sound.” The nationwide Sonic fast food chain began in 1953 with a small root beer stand called “Top Hat” in Shawnee, Okla.

Owners Troy Smith and Charles Pappe decided to expand their “Top Hat” franchise with drive-in locations in Stillwater and Enid in 1958. In 1959, the chain’s name was changed to Sonic and was first featured on the Sonic sign in Stillwater on Main Street just south of Hall of Fame Avenue. Famous for its coneys, tater tots, limeades and roller skating carhops, Sonic continues to delight patrons across America.

ONCE A COWBOY, ALWAYS A COWBOY! Congratulations! Your time as an undergraduate has come to an end. As you earned your diploma and gained lifelong memories, one thing will always remain: You will always be an Oklahoma State Cowboy. OSU has several different graduate programs as well as two graduate schools.

The first graduate degree programs were established in 1911 and continue to grow to this day. Make sure to check out the OSU graduate college before you leave campus.

Are you more interested in becoming a doctor? Oklahoma State has two graduate colleges that focus on animal and human health — the Center for Veterinary Health Sciences in Stillwater and the Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa, which includes the College of Osteopathic Medicine. You will never reach your potential by only doing that which you already know how to do and by staying in the background of organizations and activities. This is the opportunity to stretch yourself and find out your true potential. It’s OK to learn you are not good at something, but it’s not OK to never have tried. Make the most of these four years.
