July News Briefs Two arrested for Drug Charges By Brandon K. Pierce • Publisher Brandon@thesportsledger.com A shoplifting suspect and a Geraldine man are in jail after being arrested for drug charges by DeKalb County authorities. According to DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris, the Ider Police Department responded to a shoplifting call from the town’s Dollar General Store. Ider officers searched the vehicle of Bobby Ray Hudgens, age 58 of Flat Rock, who was present at the time. As a result of the search, officers discovered syringes and a vial containing a substance thought to be methamphetamine. The DeKalb County Drug Task Force was notified and upon their arrival it was confirmed that the vial found in Hudgens’ possession did in fact contain methamphetamine. Hudgens was charged with Illegal Possession of Controlled Substance and as of Thursday, July 26, 2012 he was awaiting bond in the DeKalb County Detention Center. The Ider Police Department may also add a shop-lifting charge to Hudgens, but that information has not yet been confirmed. The Sports Ledger, Brandon K. Pierce Sheriff Harris said that he’s not surprised at all when theft-related searches result in drug seizure. In an unrelated event, another drug arrest was made as a result of a license checkpoint by DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies and officers from the Geraldine and Crossville Police Departments. Further search of the vehicle revealed that Tidwell was also in possession of methamphetamine and an undisclosed amount of money. The DeKalb County Drug Task Force was notified and they confirmed the officers’ findings. Tidwell was charged with Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Illegal Possession of Controlled Substance and Illegal Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The gun, money and the vehicle were seized and Tidwell was placed in the county jail where he awaits bond. Sheriff Harris stated that he hopes these drug arrests, as well as the Spice arrest made earlier this week, will help to alleviate the concerns of citizens who so frequently communicate their distress to him about the threat of drugs in DeKalb County.

Man Arrested for Burglary On Friday, July 27, 2012 a vehicle was broken into on the High Falls Park property. Several items belonging to four different The Sports Ledger, Brandon K. Pierce individuals, together totaling approximately $700 in value, were reported as stolen. Monday afternoon, July 30, 2012 authorities arrested 18 year old Sterlin R. Morgan of Boaz (DeKalb County). He is currently charged with Burglary of an Auto and is in the DeKalb County jail The Sylvania Rams held their annual football picture day on July 23, 2012. The Rams will kick off the 2012 season on where he awaits bond. August 30 by hosting the Sardis Lions. Man Arrested for Child Sex Abuse According to DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris, a Fyffe man has been arrested for Sexual Abuse of a child. Allen Lingerfelt, 46, is in jail on charges of Sexual Abuse of a child less than twelve years old. At the time of the Sheriff’s press release about the arrest Lingerfelt was being held in the DeKalb County Detention Center on six counts with a bond set at $120,000. The Sheriff’s investigators were notified of possible abuse after a routine DHR interview with the child. After gathering information and several pieces of evidence, investigators presented their findings to District Attorney Mike O’Dell. O’Dell authorized the warrants on Lingerfelt and Deputy District Attorney Bob Johnston will be prosecuting the case. The investigation is continuing so further details are being held at this time.

DeKalb County Corrections Officer placed on Administrative Leave According to DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris, Corrections Officer Lucas Yancey, has been charged with DUI by the Alabama State Troopers Office . Mr. Yancey had supposedly left the roadway, causing damage to a dwelling on County Road 72 in Fyffe. He was transported by ambulance to DeKalb Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released . Mr. Yancey had no serious injuries. “It’s an unfortunate incident. Lucas is an outstanding corrections officer and is a great asset to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office,” commented Sheriff Harris. This case is still under investigation by the Alabama State Troopers Office. Yancey was placed on administrative leave until his court date which is set for August 22, 2012.

Douglas Eagles Football The Douglas Eagles held their annual football picture day on July 26, 2012. The Eagles will host the Albertville Aggies in a fall football jamboree on August 23, 2012 at Arthur Jarvis Stadium. Centre native named Pro Indoor Football League Offensive Player of Year Former Jacksonville State & Cheorkee County standout Maurice Dupree was recently named the Professional Indoor Football League 2012 Offensive Player of the Year. Dupree plays for the Columbus Lions and had a record-setting year in just his second season in the league. The former Cherokee County prep star led the PIFL in scoring (242), touchdown receptions (40), and receiving The Sports Ledger, Brandon K. Pierce yards (1278). Dupree was a multiple AllOVC selection in 2008, where he was a first-team wide receiver and a second-team

return specialist for Jacksonville State. The Centre native set a Jacksonville State record after catching 10 touchdown passes as a senior in 2008, while finishing the season with 799 yards on 49 catches and averaged 72.6 yards per game. As a return specialist, he led the Ohio Valley Conference in kickoff returns and was second in punt returns, averaging 28.26 yards per kickoff, and 11.35 yards per punt return to rank among the national leaders. _From JSU
