Several areas near downtown Albertville, as well as in some other locations around North Alabama, were damaged last week in what some weather officials have dubbed as a possible microburst. The winds toppled trees, power lines and traffic lights. It also damaged local businesses and forced Albertville’s Bee Gees Restaurant to close last Friday, August 8.

Single game tickets for five Jacksonville State University home football games are now on sale. Season tickets are also still available for purchase, including tickets in the Stadium Club Level. All previous season ticket holders are encouraged to

By Tim Eberhart, Rainsville Chamber Everyone wore their Sunday best on August 29-30, 1964 for a big triple dedication ceremony in Rainsville. Half-century old photographs and newspaper clippings reveal a great deal about it. I lived out on Fruit Farm Road at the time, and I was only two, but when you inspect the photos it’s not hard to imagine mid-August, 50 years ago, as Rainsville prepared for the big event which would include grand openings at a new city hall, a new post office, and the town’s first bank–all on the same weekend. State and federal officials including Congressman Albert Rains would be on hand for various ceremonies. Certainly Mayor Burke, Postmistress Lister, bank directors and other leading citizens of Rainsville pressed to put finishing touches on the three buildings and their respective grounds. Some of the old photos reveal the Rainsville Home Demonstration Club and the Sand Mountain Booster’s Club helped plan the activities surrounding the landmark celebration that would prove to be worthy of front-page coverage in regional newspapers. I wonder if Rainsville turned out the way they all envisioned it. Did they expect the town to grow into the city it is today? I don’t think there are many surprises. Many of the community’s leaders from a half century ago are still around. They’re not surprised Rainsville outgrew all three buildings pretty quickly. They’re not surprised we now have four banks plus a credit union. They’re not surprised we have four attorneys’ offices, over a dozen healthcare providers, two supermarkets and 17 restaurants in this city that now stretches out for seven miles at its widest point. They’re not surprised our power and telecommunications providers remain rock solid, or that our industrial parks are home to a good number of growing manufacturers. They’re not surprised there are construction projects in progress. Those three buildings are being used for different purposes today, but the memory of the triple dedication ceremony of 1964, and other milestones which have taken place since that weekend, are worth preserving for future generations. The now inactive Rainsville Heritage Commission, and the newer Historical Preservation Committee, have collected a large number of photos, clippings, stories and other documents for that purpose. If you have some information or images from Rainsville’s past that should be included in the collection, please drop by my office. I can scan most items while you wait.

This will be the third consecutive summer that a golf tournament will serve as the program's primary fund raiser. We All Need to Sober Up! No, I am not talking about drunkenness from intoxicating beverages, although that also needs to be avoided. I am talking about having a sober mind. Scripture often uses the word “sober” to indicate the right kind of thinking. I want to venture a guess that most people are “drunk” on many things other than alcoholic beverages. It seems that many people have the idea that abstinence from strong drink should be all that is required for soberness, but it is not. We all need to keep our minds clean in the areas of pornography, filthy language, dirty jokes and a host of other things. I am sure I am as human as you are, and I happen to know that I cannot fill my mind with the devil’s junk thoughts and still be close to God; it just does not work that way. I never cease to be amazed at the way some people think. I have had people come to me and say, “Preacher, I just cannot seem to get my mind off the things that I know are wrong. My questioning begins like this: what are you reading; what are you watching; with whom are you keeping company and conversing? faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.” Now we have a direct command from God concerning the soberness of our minds. If we are to successfully fight against the devil’s tricks, we must learn to be sober in our thinking. That may sound like a big ticket item in our day, since we have so many bad thoughts bombarding our minds on a regular basis, but it can be done! The devil is on the prowl, looking for weaklings whom he may devour. You and I can decide that we are not going to allow him to overcome us, if we are in Christ and are living in obedience to Him. We must resist the devil in “the faith”, which means right teaching from the Word of God. We must also realize that others are being attacked by Satan, just as we are. It is not any secret that the devil has planned the downfall of all humanity, but Jesus Christ has offered to help us to win against Satan. The problem is that most people are just too lazy to learn Bible truth, so that they can overcome Satan’s falsehood! What about you? Are you willing to take the challenge and put on the armor of God for this battle? (See Ephesians 6:10-18.) We must start with correct, or perhaps corrected, thinking!

NFL Extra point rule change could be good The NFL has been doing something interesting this preseason. They are making the extra point attempts tougher. Instead of it being a chip shot, it's now from 33 yards away. This extra point rule is in a trial period, but I think it would make things much more interesting. Let's face it, a kicker might miss one extra point attempt in every 100 tries. Imagine what could happen if the NFL decided to make this change. Would it force teams to go for two point conversions if their kicker misses an extra point? In my opinion, the current extra point is boring. But, this could be a huge change and if it does happen I think it would be a great thing.
Snead State Fall Baseball League Registration for Snead State’s fall baseball league is now open. The fall league is designed to provide high school baseball players in grades 9-12 an opportunity to stay sharp off-season. It is intended for those who plan to play on their high school's varsity, junior varsity or freshmen baseball team.
