By Brandon K. Pierce Publisher A father and his son have been arrested on robbery and kidnapping charges. According to DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris, Bobby Lynn Dowdy Sr, 55 and Bobby Lynn Dowdy Jr., 35, both of Crossville, were arrested by investigators and Drug Task Force agents without incident at a home on County Road 9 near Crossville. Both men are accused of taking another man at gunpoint, and taking his cash and other valuables while they drove around. The victim stated he thought he was going to be
killed until the suspects told him what he could do to redeem himself to them. The victim was released later and continually threatened by the suspects. As of press time, both Dowdy and his son are in the DeKalb County Detention Center awaiting bond on charges of Robbery 1st and Kidnapping 2nd.
“I’m glad this didn’t turn into a homicide because after looking at the information we have now it looks like it got pretty close,” commented Sheriff Harris. “I expect additional charges when this goes to the grand jury. I’m glad this young man is safe after this ordeal.”

Columns by Matt Silvestro • Ledger Correspondent It's yet another season of contention for the Atlanta Braves. This season might be one of the most impressive thus far. The Braves lost two of their top starters before the season began, yet they continue to play at the top of their division. Players like Dan Uggla continue to disappoint, yet this team continues to win. It's impressive. However, after this season, this team might have a tough decision to make. Should they rebuild? That will be the question. If they can make a big trade or two this season, it could allow them to wait another year or two and rebuild. It just goes to show how often a team needs to stock up considering this team rebuilt just a few years ago. With players asking for top dollar, it's hard for a team to build around a player or two.

Mentone’s JulyFest set for July 19-20
The Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s 4-H Program held its annual North Alabama Regional Congress on June 21st, 2014 at Snead State Community College in Boaz, AL. Marshall County had 30 youth who participated at the event that is held for 1st place winners from County Round Up in twenty different competitive projects. Top competitors from 11 North Alabama counties are eligible to compete at Regional Congress. Bringing home 1st place victories were the following: Gracie Davidson/Arab Jr. High (Freestyle Demonstration), Jackson Martin/Arab Elementary (Chicken Que), John Evans Thrower/ Arab Jr. High (Woodworking), Junaleigh Phillips/Brindlee Mt. Presented by the Mentone Area Arts Council, JulyFest Art and Music Festival made its debut in 2012 attracting thousands to the mountaintop town for a weekend of free family fun. Atop Lookout Mountain in Mentone, the third annual event is set for July 19-20, 2014, offering two days of fine arts and crafts, music by notable Alabama bands plus a pet parade, silent auction, dog adoption and more. On Saturday, July 19th, the two-day event opens at 9 a.m. with the prestigious juried arts and crafts show featuring the works of about 50 talented artists and craftspeople who specialize in oil paintings, pastels, watercolors, photography, sculptures, wood art, rustic furniture, pottery, basketry and jewelry. The juried show will be held both days under the trees in Mason Park in the center of Mentone where visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll as they shop for one-of-a-kind art. Registration for the pet parade starts at 9:30 a.m. at Mason Park with the parade taking to the streets at 10 a.m. Following an awards presentation, there will be an exciting animal act and new for this year is a photo center where pets can pose for a portrait. Festivalgoers can also take part in the silent auction, a plant sale and dog adoption to benefit the Humane Society and Animal Resources of DeKalb County. Live entertainment is slated for all day Saturday and include performances by saxophonist Bill Henson at 11 a.m., Curtis Strange at 1 p.m., and Lisa Crow at 3 p.m. At 5 p.m., Old Tymer’s Barbecue of Fort Payne will fill plates with their famous barbeque on the grounds of the Mentone Inn as festivalgoers enjoy more great music by Terry Hutchinson. Cost is $10 per plate. Festivalgoers are invited to stick around for a free concert by Mentone’s own Jess Goggans and the Magnetics. The concert, slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Mentone Inn Pavilion, is also a CD release event for the local group. Art and music will continue on Sunday, July 20th, with Mentone’s Larry Joe Hall slated to perform from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mason Park gazebo. Categorized as folk, rock and country, Larry’s style is punctuated with strong clear vocals and precise guitar playing. The Silent Auction, Pet Photo Center and dog adoption will also take place. Hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 19 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 20 (Central Standard Time). Festivalgoers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and picnic blankets. In the event of inclement weather, the festival will be held the following weekend, July 26-27. Happy Independence Day By Tim Eberhart, Rainsville Chamber of Commerce On behalf of our board of directors, ambassadors and staff, I wish you and yours a wonderful, safe holiday weekend. I hope you get a chance to make some lasting memories with family and friends. Our office will be closed on Friday in observance of Independence Day. If you are looking for something memorable to do this weekend, let me suggest a play. The Players in Progress youth theatre will present their summer play, The Frog Princess, on the 4th and 5th of July at 7 p.m. at the Tom Bevill Enrichment Center in downtown Rainsville. Tickets are only $5 each and will be available at the door. They have been rehearsing for a few weeks here at the TBEC where our office is also located, so I have been able to hear the young actors and actresses as they deal with costumes and makeup, and learn their lines. They have worked hard, but have also had a lot of fun, and I’m sure if you attend the play you will, too. Luckily, the TBEC sits alongside the park, the site of the new Rainsville Farmers Market that kicks off on July 3. It will be from 4 to 7 p.m. each Thursday afternoon during the summer. I’m looking forward to seeing what kinds of fruits and vegetables will be available from the local growers as the season progresses. Summer means it’s time for the Chamber to focus on our biggest fundraising effort of the year–our annual scholarship golf tournament. The tournament will be held on the green, green grass of the Rainsville Golf & Country Club on August 23. If you are interested in our scholarship program or golf, we would love for you to get involved with the event. There are several ways to do that. Maybe you would like to be among the players. There will be a few dozen three-person teams. If you operate a business, we have at least three levels of tournament sponsorship, as well as other ways to contribute while gaining recognition for your business. Deuteronomy 32:8-9 is interesting concerning Israel: “When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when He separated the sons of Adam, He set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel. For the LORD’S portion is His people; Jacob is the lot of His inheritance.” The dividing of the nations is found in Genesis chapter 11, where the people built the tower of Babel. Our verses are saying that God had Israel in mind, along with a specific land for them, when He doled out the land to the various nations of the world. It may surprise some people that God has actually allotted different lands for different people. This is shown clearly in Deuteronomy chapter 2, where God mentioned several nations by which Israel would pass on their way to Canaan. God said that He had given certain lands to these people, and Israel was not to distress them by mistreating them or trying to take their land. One of the nations whom God told Israel not to “Meddle with” was Seir, which God gave to Esau. Notice Deuteronomy 2:4-5: “And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:
Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breath; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.” Romans 9:13 says, “As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.” I think some people need to do some more study on this verse, because God did not hate Esau to the degree that He did nothing for him. Actually, it seems to mean that God loved Jacob more. Deuteronomy 23:7-8 says that the Edomites, Esau’s descendants, could come into the congregation of Israel in their third generation, whereas the Ammonites and Moabites could never do so. My big point is that God has given certain lands to certain people, and no one has a right to try to take that land from them, especially not from Israel! The nation of Israel is not in good standing with God at the present, because of their rejection of Jesus as their Messiah, but that will change in the future, perhaps not too far away! It may be also argued that God gave the lands of some people, the Canaanites namely, to other people, because of the wickedness of those lands. The difference is that God has promised to restore Israel to her own land and to His favor (see Jeremiah 32; Amos 9:14-15; Zechariah 2:10-14).

He was preceded in death by Parents: Grover and Dera Mae Jones; and son: Richard Jones.

Melissa Simmons Melissa Simmons, 47 of Newnan, GA (Formerly of Albertville) passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at her residence in Newnan ,GA where she lived since 2011. Disabled and mentally challenged, Ms. Simmons lived with her mother in Albertville until she passed away in 2010. Funeral service were held on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel with Bro. Jack Lynch and Bro Austin Harris officiating. Burial was in Asbury Cemetery. Maxine Blevins Smith
Former Etowah County Probate Judge and County Commissioner Lee Wofford has passed. Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 29 at Sardis Baptist Church, where he formerly served as deacon. Burial was at Liberty Baptist Church. Wofford died on June 25 at his home in Sardis City. He was 86. He was born in the Smith Institute community of Etowah County in 1928, graduated Sardis High School in 1946, and served on the front lines in Korea. Wofford was elected to a record five consecutive terms from 1964 to 1980 as county commissioner and served as probate judge from 1984-1989. He was a 32nd degree Freemason. Wofford is survived by the former Frances Leeth, his wife of 63 years, 345 days; son Tom Wofford of Birmingham; grandson Russell (Haley) Wofford of Pell City; granddaughter Kylee Wofford of Los Angeles; sister Faye Kilpatrick of Gadsden; and 14 nieces and nephews. Wofford was predeceased by his elder son Terry Wofford and eldest grandchild, Patrick Wofford, by his parents G.A. “Ad” and Emma Wofford, sister Mildred Duke, and brothers Carl and D.C. Wofford.

Burial was in Beulah Chapel cemetery. Coach Herman Bittinger Herman Bittinger passed away after a short battle with cancer, Thursday, June 26, 2014 at his home in Boaz. Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at McRae Chapel. Burial was in Mt. View Gardens, in Rainsville. Coach Bittinger was born in Cullman, Alabama on April 4, 1928. Coach B., as he was affectionately known, enjoyed a coaching/teaching career beginning at Center Point School, then Fyffe High School and ending his career at Crossville High School. After Junior College he played baseball in the New York Giants organization until he was called to serve his country in the U. S. Army. He enjoyed his retirement years playing golf with his friends. He was a member of Boaz First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maxine Campbell Bittinger of Boaz, Son: David Bittinger of Huntsville, Godgrandchildren: LaShonda, JaQuez & JaQuan Kelly, Sister-in-Law: Lillian Dalton of Boaz, Brother-in-Law: Ralph Campbell of Tennessee, and numerous nieces and nephews.

14-Year-old juvenile charged with Murder A 14 year old juvenile has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a Mount Vernon woman and could be charged as an adult in the case. According to DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris, the juvenile was taken into custody after deputies responded to a 911 call on County Road 99 and found Kelena Annette Hicks, age 38, in the living
room of her mobile home suffering from a gunshot wound. Hicks was transported by DeKalb Ambulance Service to a helicopter which transported her to Huntsville Hospital, where she later died. The juvenile involved in the shooting has already appeared in court. District Judge Steve Whitmire heard from Deputy District
Attorney Bob Johnston about the events that took place. The teenager was officially charged with murder in the death of Ms. Hicks and Judge Whitmire found there was probable cause to continue the detention of the suspect. Robert Ray was appointed to represent the juvenile and Matt Green will serve as his guardian during
the upcoming proceedings Harris added that the State has also filed a motion for an order to certify the juvenile as an adult for trial purposes. Juvenile Probation will now prepare a report for the court to use in helping make that determination. The date for that hearing will be set sometime after August 1st. The suspect was returned to Anniston where
he will remain until his hearing “This is one of the most disturbing cases I have had to deal with in my career. You just can’t imagine a 14 year old doing something this brutal,” said Harris. “This will be a case for the courts to decide on the status of this young man. He will remain in juvenile custody until that decision is made,” added Harris.
“I am very sorry for the family and their loss in this case. This young woman had just lost her father last month and this family is devastated. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.” The Sheriff also added that his office is going to withhold any further comment on this case at this time due to the sensitive nature of the circumstances.

Two arrested for drugs Two individuals have been arrested after authorities found drugs. According to DeKalb County Sherriff Jimmy Harris, investigators went to a residence on County Road 352 to conduct an interview on a theft case. Once on the scene near Fyffe, officers observed marijuana growing and located other drug paraphernalia. Two suspects were detained and it was determined they both had outstanding felony warrants from Indiana. During a further search of the residence, officers located a meth lab and chemicals used in the manufacture of meth. Joseph Johnson, 34 and Tonya Caves, 37 both of Indiana, were arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Manufacturing 2nd, and Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance. A rifle was also taken from the scene by investigators. Johnson is also being held on the outstanding warrants for Failure to Appear on numerous drug charges. Caves is wanted for probation violation in Indiana. As of press time, both were being held in the County Detention Center. “I’m glad to have these people off the street,” said Harris. “They came here from Indiana to avoid drug charges and started right up with a meth lab and growing pot. These officers did a good job of being aware of their surroundings in making this case.”
