Three individuals have been arrested after investigators and DeKalb County Drug Task Force agents executed a search warrant in Whiton. According to DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris, officers found drug paraphernalia, methamphetamine, and two methamphetamine labs during the search. Bobby Loyd Sanders, 55, of Geraldine, Regina Gwen Wiggins, 49, of Guntersville, and Travis Matthew Newman, 28, of Guntersville were all arrested and charged with unlawful possession of controlled substance, unlawful manufacturing of controlled substance, and felony possession of drug paraphernalia. All were transported to the DeKalb County Detention Center where, as of press time, they were awaiting bonds. Wiggins also had active warrants from DeKalb County for previous drug charges. “We have been working the Whiton area due to an increase in burglaries. These contacts produced the information that got these people arrested. We are still looking for any suspicious persons or activity so we appreciate all the help we get from the public,” said Harris.

The University of Alabama football team's annual Fan Day, presented by Alumni Hall Store, is set for Sunday, August 3. The Crimson Tide will hold an open practice in Bryant-Denny Stadium from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Players and coaches will be available for autographs immediately after the practice on the field at approximately 4:45 p.m. Fans may enter the stadium beginning at 1:30 p.m. through gate 44 and occupy the lower bowl (sections AANN). The open practice, which is slated to start at 2:30 p.m., is scheduled to last approximately two hours. For security purposes, all items are subject to inspection as fans enter the stadium for both the practice and Fan Day. Children attending can sign up for the Big Al's Kids Club and all fans can register for the Crimson Tide Rewards program outside the East side of the stadium at gate 44 beginning at 1:30 p.m. At the conclusion of practice, those wishing to participate in Fan Day will enter the field through gate 31 and exit via gate 44. Fans not wishing to view practice and would like to start lining up early can do so beginning at 1:30 p.m. Those fans can enter through gate 31. Following practice, the Crimson Tide football team, coaching staff and head coach Nick Saban will be available for autographs on the field for 45 minutes. The gate to the field will be open once the autograph session has been set up. In an effort to facilitate as many autographs in the time allowed, fans will be limited to one item per person for autographs, and no posed photographs will be permitted. Parking for Fan Day can be found in the West ten Hoor area of campus. There are two parking decks as well as surface lots that are available for your convenience. Parking for persons with disabilities is available on a first come, first served basis in the Communications card Lot and Wallace Wade Lots. No special accommodations will be made for recreational vehicles (RVs) on campus. All RVs should park at the Northington Lot near University Mall. Fans can go to www.rolltide.com for updates and other pertinent information. In case of inclement weather, the Fan Day would be moved into Coleman Coliseum.

By Tim Eberhart, executive director Rainsville Chamber of Commerce I often comment in this space about various events being held in the Rainsville area. Sometimes I wonder if it’s too often. But I must do it again because August in Rainsville will start with one of the most eventful weekends in recent memory. First, starting in August, the Ya’ll Come Back Restaurant (formerly, The Mountain Restaurant) will be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening for dinner. They are also now open for lunch on Sunday. A ribbon cutting will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday to mark the occasion. Some celebrities will be in the city on Saturday, and if you are inclined to do so, it will be easy to plan your day to get out and enjoy each of them in person and still be able to drop by a store or two to take advantage of the back-toschool tax holiday. Bill Dance, the world’s most famous fisherman, will be at the Agri-Business Center during the Northeast Alabama Hunting & Outdoor Expo. According to his Facebook page, he will be there from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The expo will also feature other celebrities, several dozen vendor displays, product demos, seminars, door prize drawings, a duck calling contest and more. Admission is only $5 for adults and teenagers (free for ages 12 and under) on Saturday or Sunday. The Rick Webb Family will share their smooth Carolina-style of Southern Gospel at 9 a.m. at Farmers Telecommunications Cooperative’s annual meeting at the coliseum in Rainsville on Saturday. This meeting is a milestone all on its own. It’s the co-op’s 60th annual meeting, and they’ve added some activities to mark the occasion. There will be an antique car and truck show starting at 8 a.m. Members will have the opportunity to enjoy Coke floats and other goodies. Of course, they will also have the election of two trustees, and give away a large number of gifts and door prizes. The world’s most famous blue macaws will be on the big screen on Saturday at 8 p.m. at RTI’s Movie in the Park presentation of Rio 2. The movie had been originally scheduled for a couple of weeks ago but was postponed until this weekend due to rain. Bring your own chairs or ground covering and enjoy the free outdoor movie.
The Northeast Alabama Hunting & Outdoor Expo will be held August 2-3, at the Northeast Alabama Agri-Business Center. For more info call 256-593-8154. - Registration for Snead State’s fall baseball league is now open. The SSCC fall league is designed to provide area high school baseball players in grades 9-12 an opportunity to stay sharp offseason. It is intended for those who plan to play on their high school's varsity, junior varsity or freshmen baseball team. Players must use wooden bats, which are available for purchase through Coach Casey Underwood. The Fall League consists of six teams with approximately 12 players on each roster. Each team plays eight games. All games are played in late August and September. Teams are coached by Snead State baseball players. Registration is $120 and provides game t-shirts, helmet usage, baseballs, umpires, instruction, and use of facilities. All participants must sign a waiver, have an updated physical, and a copy of your insurance card to turn in with their registration form. All players must sign up by Friday, Aug. 15. The class will be held at the Albertville Elementary School gym. Participants must be at least 16 years of age, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent. Cost is $20 to cover the cost of the training manual each participant will receive. Class size will be limited to 30 people. If you would like to register for this class, call Sgt. Dave Haun at 256-891-8273. From 2000 to 2014, the Rainsville Chamber of Commerce has awarded $52,600 in college scholarships. This will be the third consecutive summer that a golf tournament will serve as the program's primary fund raiser. The Aug. 23 event is sponsored by the Rainsville Chamber and proceeds will help fund scholarships for 2015 Plainview seniors. The annual Auburn Fan Day is set for Aug. 10, 2014 from 3:30-5:30 at the Auburn Arena.
Six Snead State Community College students recently competed at the Phi Beta Lambda National Conference in Nashville, TN The students competed against more than 1,800 of America’s best and brightest college students as they showcased their talents as future business leaders and vied for the opportunity to win over $79,000 in cash awards. Snead State’s Business Presentation team earned fourth place at the national competition. Their event consisted of preparing a presentation regarding the Affordable Car Act and how it will affect small businesses. Team members included Daniel Gomez of Albertville, Daniel Garcia of Albertville and Dalton Farmer of Allgood. Gomez also competed in Information Management.

Does God Love The Ungodly? What does it mean that God hates the workers of iniquity? Psalm 5:5-6 says, “The foolish shall not stand in Thy sight: Thou hatest all workers of iniquity. Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.” The word “leasing” means “to lie”, so God will destroy liars. The word “abhor” means “to hate”, so God hates bloody and deceitful men. To some people, this may sound like God would really love to cast all of the above into hell, but that is not the case! Ezekiel 33:11-12 says, “Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness: neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth.” These verses could seem hard to This photograph is of an Old church in Spring Hill, Alabama that was understand, but they really are not. speaking of physical death in these verses. He says that He has no pleasure in the physical death of the wicked, rather, He desires that the wicked turn from their wickedness and live. Then God says that a righteous man might turn from his righteousness and bring physical death early, because of his disobedience. Our verses are not speaking of eternal salvation, for no man can simply stop being wicked and be saved by such reform. Galatians 2:21 proves this truth by showing that there is no law one can keep to gain eternal life. God is showing, in the verses above, that a wicked man in Israel could prolong his life by turning from his wickedness. So, God hates the workers of iniquity as long as such people persist in their sins, but He loves them enough to save them from their sins when they repent and place their faith in Him. Romans 5:8 says, “But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” All of us are sinners by nature and by choice, but when we turn to God in repentance and faith, He saves us!

Are you ready for the bench Johnny? Wow, Johnny football, two years ago, people barely knew who you were. You then set numerous college football records and you became a top NFL quarterback prospect. You haven't even started your professional career and it seems like your team is already questioning if you are going to be a successful NFL quarterback. I think Peyton Manning or Tom Brady needs to sit you down and tell you that your main focus right now needs to be football. When a team wants to build a team around you, you need to give that franchise your all. It's frustrating that there are people doubting Manziel, but he is only doing it to himself. It should be interesting to see how it plays out. It wouldn't be surprising to see him on the bench to start the season.

In 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. A study has shown that children who became obese as early as age 2 were more likely to be obese as adults. Childhood obesity has both immediate and long term effects on health and well being. Health risks include heart disease, diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer and osteoarthritis. Obesity also contributes to bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and poor self-esteem. Healthy lifestyle habits such as healthy eating and physical activity can lower the risk of childhood obesity. The Chamber’s newest member, Foster’s Training Facility, can be the solution for encouraging children to exercise. According to owner, Marisa Foster, the facility offers a unique youth fitness program in a friendly environment, as a fun way for kids to get in shape. Research shows that ages 7 through 11 are the peak years for children to develop their coordination and motor skills. Therefore, through speed, agility, and body weight strength training techniques, the facility’s program will improve each kid’s abilities and address individual athletic needs in order to build that critical physical foundation. Foster’s training Facility offers various programs providing quality training and conditioning for athletes of every age and ability level.
