The NACC Fishing Team has a duo headed to the upcoming 2014 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship.

Hayden Tilley, of Ider, and Alex Clayton, of Dutton, are going to be facing off against 83 other college teams from across the nation. Northeast will be the only community college represented.

Tilley and Clayton will be competing to finish inside the top four teams at the National Championship.

If they make the top four, they will be held over after the tournament to compete in the Classic Bracket beginning immediately the next day. The Classic Bracket will be Aug. 3-5 The duo will fish the National Championship on July 31 to Aug 2 at the Chatuge Reservoir in Hiawassee, Ga.

Champions Headed to World Series The Xtreme 03 10U Girls Softball Travel Team won the USSSA Championship on June 29 in Cullman. The girls were undefeated during the 3 day tournament of 26 teams, allowing only 9 runs and scoring 62 in 8 games.

By Brandon K. Pierce Publisher On the evening of July 5, 2014 authorities responded to a call that an intoxicated female was stealing items from a store at Hammonds Crossroads. According to DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris, officers found Christine Saunders, 45 of Fyffe, intoxicated with items from the store on her person.

“Saunders had a horse tied up outside of the store that we believe she was riding,” said Harris.

“We recovered 3 cans of Keystone light in a Walmart bag tied on the saddle horn.

The horse was later returned to the owner who did not want to press charges.”

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is working

Christine Saunders with the store owner on other charges. Saunders was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication, Illegal Possession of a Prohibited Beverage and was transported to the DeKalb County Detention center.

While Alabama’s black bear population is relatively low, estimated at less than 350 animals, it appears to be increasing as evidenced by higher than normal sightings.

Recent black bear sightings in Butler and Choctaw counties add to the growing number of observations outside the animal’s traditional ranges in the state. In recent years, bear sightings have also been recorded in Jefferson, Lee, Chambers and Macon counties.

Historically, a small population of black bear has remained rooted in southwest Alabama, primarily in Mobile and Washington counties. In recent years, bears migrating from northwest Georgia have established a small but viable population in northeast Alabama. Changes in bear distribution and seasonal movement may be the result of a combination of factors. Habitat fragmentation due to residential and commercial development and a natural growth in black bear population are two potential reasons for the increase in sightings.

“It is quite evident that black bears are increasing in numbers and expanding the historic ranges,” said Keith Gauldin, Assistant Wildlife Chief for the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF). “During spring and summer, adult males will cover surprisingly large areas in search of receptive females. Young sub-adult bears, recently ousted from their mothers’ territory, will also roam widely to establish their own home ranges.”

Black bears are typically secretive, shy animals that will avoid human interaction. Occasionally, a curious bear will explore a human-populated area in search of food. To avoid accidently attracting a bear to your home, feed pets just enough food that they can consume in one meal. Secure uneaten pet food, trash bins, bird feeders and other wildlife feeders as they are easy pickings for hungry young bears.

What should you do if lucky enough to encounter/ observe a black bear? (1) Do not be frightened. (2) Do not approach the animal, (3) Do not run from the bear, back away slowly, (4) Stand tall and upright, (5) Avoid direct eye contact with the bear, (6 )Make sure the bear has a unobstructed direction to escape, and (6) Never purposely feed a bear

Mentone’s JulyFest set for July 19-20 Presented by the Mentone Area Arts Council, JulyFest Art and Music Festival made its debut in 2012 attracting thousands to the mountaintop town for a weekend of free family fun. Atop Lookout Mountain in Mentone, the third annual event is set for July 19-20, 2014, offering two days of fine arts and crafts, music by notable Alabama bands plus a pet parade, silent auction, dog adoption and more.

On Saturday, July 19th, the two-day event opens at 9 a.m. with the prestigious juried arts and crafts show featuring the works of about 50 talented artists and craftspeople who specialize in oil paintings, pastels, watercolors, photography, sculptures, wood art, rustic furniture, pottery, basketry and jewelry. The juried show will be held both days under the trees in Mason Park in the center of Mentone where visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll as they shop for one-of-a-kind art.

Registration for the pet parade starts at 9:30 a.m. at Mason Park with the parade taking to the streets at 10 a.m.

Following an awards presentation, there will be an exciting animal act and new for this year is a photo center where pets can pose for a portrait. Festivalgoers can also take part in the silent auction, a plant sale and dog adoption to benefit the Humane Society and Animal Resources of DeKalb County.

Live entertainment is slated for all day Saturday and include performances by saxophonist Bill Henson at 11 a.m., Curtis Strange at 1 p.m., and Lisa Crow at 3 p.m. At 5 p.m., Old Tymer’s Barbecue of Fort Payne will fill plates with their famous barbeque on the grounds of the Mentone Inn as festivalgoers enjoy more great music by Terry Hutchinson. Cost is $10 per plate. Festivalgoers are invited to stick around for a free concert by Mentone’s own Jess Goggans and the Magnetics. The concert, slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Mentone Inn Pavilion, is also a CD release event for the local group.

Art and music will continue on Sunday, July 20th, with Mentone’s Larry Joe Hall slated to perform from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mason Park gazebo. Categorized as folk, rock and country, Larry’s style is punctuated with strong clear vocals and precise guitar playing. The Silent Auction, Pet Photo Center and dog adoption will also take place.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 19 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 20 (Central Standard Time).

Festivalgoers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and picnic blankets. In the event of inclement weather, the festival will be held the following weekend, July 26-27.

By Carol Beddingfield Executive Director, Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce Sweet Seasons Farm will host the Summer Social, a fund raiser to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The event will be held on July 12th beginning at 6:30 PM. Activities will include a live auction, entertainment, and a sheep dog demonstration. Refreshments will be served.

Tickets are on sale at the Chamber for $10 each. The price will be $15 the night of the event.

Cystic fibrosis is a life threatening genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. An estimated 30,000 children and adults in the US have CF. In the 1950’s, few children with CF lived to attend elementary school.

Since then, progress in the understanding and treatment has led to dramatic improvements in the quality of life for many. Life expectancy today is 30, 40 and beyond.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has played an important role in the improvements in treating the disease.

Nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of the Foundation support. Through the foundation efforts, research to find a cure is more promising than ever before.

The Albertville Parks and Recreation will be the host site for the Dizzy Dean State Baseball Tournament.

The tournament will be held on July 11-16 for 12U boys.

Several Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) SkillsUSA members and advisors recently attended the 50th Annual National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) in Kansas City, MO. This week-long event was a national-level competition for high school and college students enrolled in career and technical education programs. Quality career and technical education was the centerpiece of the conference. More than 15,000 students, teachers, education leaders, and representatives from more than 600 national corporations, trade associations, businesses and labor unions participated in the event. The conference hosted 99 contest events that covered leadership development as well as skilled and technical sciences.

Some of the SkillsUSA participants include: Tristan Blakely, Victoria Hall, Lauren Wilson, Collin Andrews.

From 2000 to 2014, the Rainsville Chamber of Commerce has awarded $52,600 in college scholarships. This will be the third consecutive summer that a golf tournament will serve as the program's primary fund raiser. The August 23 event is sponsored by the Rainsville Chamber and Proceeds will fund scholarships for Plainview High School seniors to be awarded in May 2015.

I don’t know how much more fun I can take. Thanks to the Freedom 5K/10K, followed by the Rainsville Freedom Fest, and then that long, gorgeous holiday weekend, the past three weeks have truly been fun-filled days in our city. But now it seems the good times were just getting started.

What could be more fun than a free movie under the stars? Rainsville Technology Inc (RTI) will host their summer Movie in the Park on July 19 featuring the animated hit, Rio 2. Popcorn will be free while it lasts. Bring your own lawn chairs and ground cover. They are having a summer luau theme, so wear your tropical duds if you have some. It starts at 8 p.m.

For me, dining out equals good times. For your dining pleasure, the Mountain Restaurant & Grille will begin opening on Sunday for lunch starting July 13. Sunday hours will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Of course, they are still open for breakfast and lunch on the other days. The restaurant, which is now under new ownership, will transition to more new hours and a new name sometime in August, so stay tuned. Don’t wait until August to meet the new owners, Paulla and Doug McCrea.

A Rainsville Business After Hours is planned for July 22 at B-Sharp Boutique & Resale Shop located at 285 McCurdy Avenue (Highway 75) North. That’s across the Street from the Rainsville Foodland. All our members should consider themselves invited, but you do not have to be a member to join in the fun.

These events can be an excellent opportunity for business people to network with potential clients, peers, and community leaders in a relaxed, after-work setting.

By the way, we are looking for someone to host the next one in the late summer or fall.

I’ve heard that few things in the South are more fun than a tailgate party, and as I walked through the new Rainsville Farmers Market last Thursday I thought I had wondered into one. Many of the vendors, which numbered over a dozen, displayed their corn, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, blueberries, etc. on their tailgates. I heard one estimate of about 400 people in attendance. It will take place again each Thursday afternoon from 4 to 7 p.m. during the summer.

“We Got What You Need!

I have actually heard people say that under the law of Moses people were saved by offering animal sacrifice, but that is not true! Acts 4:12 says, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.” The context of this verse shows Peter preaching about Jesus Christ, so no one has ever been saved apart from His work on the cross!

Many people argue that those who died before Christ could not have benefited from His death, since they lived and died before He came to earth. Hebrews 9:13-15 will help us: “For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, Who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause He is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.”

Animal sacrifice only purified, ceremonially, the flesh, so that the worship of men could be accepted by God. The

blood of Christ, however, washes away sin for all believers of all ages!

Our verses above show that Jesus died for the sins that were under the first testament, meaning the old testament, or the old covenant. The question arises as to how Jesus could die for the sins of people who had lived and died before He came to earth.

The solution is that God looks at the death of Christ as having been before the foundation of the world. Revelation 13:8 refers to Christ as: “the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world.” So, God could account the death of Christ for all those who had placed their faith in God during the Old Testament period.

Genesis 15:6 shows that Abraham’s faith was counted to him for righteousness.

If we can be saved almost 2,000 years after the death of Christ, then believers of the Old Testament period could be saved by faith before He came and died. One good professor said, “Those who died in faith before Jesus came were saved, as it were, on credit, until Jesus died and paid for their sins.” Hebrews 9:27 definitely says that Jesus died for the transgressions that were under the first testament, so faith brought salvation to all who believed back then!

Rev. Jerry W. Brooks, 70, went to be with his Jesus on Thursday, July, 3, 2014. He had suffered several strokes over the last 2 years but his ability to give witness to God’s love and power never diminished.

On the ambulance ride after his first stroke he shared how to have eternal life in Heaven with the paramedic riding along side.

He was a graduate of Boaz High School and served in the US Air Force. He served others by teaching History, Economics and Psychology at Sardis High School and driving a bus for 35 years. However Rev. Brooks’ cherished vocation was as a minister and pastor to 9 churches spanning 45 years.

Brooks began his ministry in Guntersville at Hillcrest Baptist. As the years passed he also served the Lord at Bethlehem, Baker’s Chapel, Red Apple, White Oak and Beulah Baptist as pastor. He served as Minister of Education at Chapel Hill and Sardis Baptist. The final place of service for his Savior was Bethany Baptist as Senior Adult Pastor. His health caused him to give up a formal ministry but, he never gave up sharing with people that Jesus is the way, the truth and his life.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret Hill Brooks. She was his “sweetie” and they loved and laughed together as one. They referred to each other as a “we” not a me. He also left behind 2 children and their spouses, Samantha & Bobby Matthews and Stacey & Kim Brooks. Together Jerry and Margaret taught their children to love God and put a witness to Him before any other part of life. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren.

He leaves behind a brother, 4 sisters and 3 in-laws. His parents, Rev. L.T. & Edith Brooks and in-laws, Rev. W. J. & Clara Hill went to Heaven before him.

A Celebration of life was be held on Wednesday, July, 9, 2014 at Bethany Baptist Church in Horton. Visitation was from 2 until time for the memorial service at 5:00 o’clock in the church sanctuary.

Mr. Conrad Earl Marshall, 73, of Park Street, Guntersville, passed away on July 8, 2014 at Shepherd’s Cove. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014 at 7 p.m. at McRae Chapel with Brother Todd Oldham officiating. McRae Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be Thursday evening 4–7 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Atmore, Alabama and Friday evening 4–7 at McRae Chapel.

Mr. Marshall was born in Atmore, Alabama on Dec. 13, 1940 to Clifford & Mildred Marshall. He was a retired sporting goods salesman.

Mr. Marshall is survived by his Son & Daughter-in-Law: Steve & Bridgette Marshall of Albertville, Granddaughter: Faith Marshall of Albertville, Brother & Sister-in-Law: Bill & Marie Marshall of Uriah, Sister: Linda Mothershed of Uriah, Special Friend: Donna Boyle of Guntersville, In-laws: Nancy & Glenn Helton of Atmore, Jimmy & Carrie Everette of Florida and Helen Sasser of Foley. He was preceded in death by his Wife: Mary Jo Everette Marshall and his parents.

Jeanette Long Kirby Jeanette Long Kirby, 86, of Fort Payne, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2014.

She was born on November 1, 1927 to the late Albert and Mildred Turner Long. She was a member of Second Baptist Church Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Wilson Funeral Home with Dr. John Screws officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 4 until 7 p.m.

She is survived by her sister, Frankie Townley and several nieces and nephews.

Crossville Nursing Home. Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, July 10, 2014) at Bethlehem Baptist Church with interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Visitation: is from noon till 2 p.m. today Bethlehem Baptist Church.

She is survived by: Daughters: Johnnie Gaskin (Gerald), and Ramona White; Son: Barry Barksdale (Cathy); 8 Grandchildren; 15 Great Grandchildren; Sister-in-law: Betty Sue Smith; and a host of Nieces & Nephews. She was preceded in death by: Husband: Jim Barksdale, Daughter: Becky Childress, 3 Brothers & 2 Sisters.

Bethel Ray Stone Bethel Ray Stone, of Fort Payne, passed away on July 2, 2014 from an extended illness. Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 6 in the Chapel of Wilson Funeral Home with burial at Walker Biddle Cemetery in Ider.

Mr. Stone was 79 years old and grew up in Sylvania, and was a graduate of Sylvania High School class of 1954.

Mr. Stone was an active member of the Ft. Payne community, serving on the City Council and Water Board as well was a Poll Supervisor for 20 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 437, serving as Worshipful Master in 1989-90; a Charter Member of the Fort Payne Optimist Club participating in programs such as Feed the Needy, Relay for Life and Race for the Cure. He was a member of the Executive Committee for DeKalb County Democratic Party as well as Drug Free DeKalb County.

Mr. Stone was a small business owner in Fort Payne operating an Appliance Repair Business and having the local Roto Rooter franchise. He attended St Paul Methodist Church.

Prior to returning to DeKalb County, Mr. Stone served for a number of years in Law Enforcement in Marshall County.

He was preceded in death by his parents W. A. Stone and Lera Stone; brothers Floyd Stone, Creed Stone and sister Hazel Wood.

Mr. Stone is survived by his wife of 34 years, Laura Jones Morgan Stone and his children Theresa Stone Pritchett (David); Pam Stone Lowery; Rock Stone (Lyn); and Danny Stone (Sheila) and by his grandchildren: Jordan and Stone Pritchett; Karly Hinkle, McKinsey Bayne, Jarrod Lowery; Shawn Stone, Necole Stone and Jeremiah Stone; Dillon Stone and Danielle Stone; and great grand children: Avery Sprinkle, Valencia Jordan; Raedan and Lanah

Tankersley; Cheyenne, Davinee and Gavin Stone.

Survivors also include Laura’s children Jay Morgan (Angie); Chris Morgan (Leslie) and their children Jud, Katie and Christina Morgan who he loved as his own grandchildren; one brother, Buck Stone (Rita Sue) and three sisters, Marjorie Davenport, Opal Sunderland, Polly Roden, Faye Straub and numerous nieces and nephews.

Stephen Wayne Baldwin Stephen Wayne Baldwin, 50, of Albertville, passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2014. Visitation is set for today (Thursday, July 10, 2014) from 5-8 p.m. at Adams Brown Service Chapel. Funeral services will be Friday, July 11 at 11 a.m.

Burial will be in Martling Cemetery.

Winston M. Mann Winston M. Mann, 82, of Albertville, passed away on July 5, 2014. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 8 at the Adams Brown Service Chapel. Burial was in Memory Hill Cemetery.

Danny James Lemons Danny James Lemons, 44, Horton, passed away on July 3, 2014. Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at the Adams Brown Service Chapel. Burial was in Nixon Chapel Cemetery.

DeKalb County authorities are investigating a shooting in Powell, Alabama that occurred on Wednesday, July 2, 2014.

According to DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris, Cecil "Monty” Gant, 44 of Dutton was shot multiple times by a homeowner on Wigley Avenue in Powell.

Harris said that 911 received a call from a man reporting a person trying to get into his residence. The homeowner retrieved a

revolver and shot the alleged intruder several times from inside the house. The suspect was able to leave the scene in a car driven by another person.

It appears that all three persons involved in the shooting were familiar with each other and a record of ongoing threats and prior reports is being evaluated.

The shooting victim was transported to DeKalb Regional Medical Center in Fort Payne where he was treated and air lifted to Huntsville Hospital. His

condition was initially listed as critical .

The shooter was transported to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office where he was interviewed and offered evidence of the ongoing threats from Mr. Gant.

Harris added that the investigation into these events is continuing and the case will likely be presented to a grand jury in the near future. The homeowner was released pending further action or information in this matter.

In stand-up paddleboarding, riders propel themselves with a paddle while standing on a surfboard-like vessel.

Nearly two million Americans age six and up went paddleboarding in the past year. As the activity becomes more popular in Alabama, the Alabama Marine Police Division (AMPD) is encouraging paddlers and boaters to heighten their awareness and take appropriate safety precautions while on the water.

“Safe boating practices apply to paddleboarding as well,” said AMPD Captain Matt Brooks. “As such, paddlers are required to adhere to the same boating etiquette and personal flotation device (PFD) requirements as traditional boaters.”

In Alabama, paddleboards are considered vessels which must have a U.S. Coast Guard approved PFD or life jacket that is accessible to the paddler at all times. If the paddler is less than eight years old, they are required to wear a PFD at all times while on the vessel.

More paddleboard safety tips: (1) Always wear a life jacket, (2) Avoid congested waterways and lakes, (3) Be certain of your swimming abilities, (4) Be aware of local regulations and navigation rules, (5) Be aware of winds, tides, current and terrain, (6) Know how to self-rescue or tow another board, (7) Never paddleboard under the influence of drugs or alcohol, (8) Never paddleboard at night and (9) Take a safety course.

It seems as if some baseball players won't move on from trying to cheat. It also doesn't help when players continue to bring it up.

I am talking about Red Sox pitcher John Lackey who made some comments about Baltimore Oriole Nelson Cruz. Cruz was suspended last year for using a performance enhancer.

I understand that the pitcher was probably frustrated when he made the comments, but it's time to move on from that part of baseball. It does take skill to play the game, these drugs just make players stronger.

These players need to stop cheating and let their skills take over and other players should stop bringing it up, From its wildlife to its landscape, there is no more photographic a state than Alabama. The categories include: Alabama State Parks, Birds, Mammals, Reptiles and Amphibians, Other Native Wildlife, Scenic/Pictorial, Nature-Based Activities, and Plants and Fungi. Two youth categories for ages 6-12 and 13-18 allow those ages to enter any of the eight categories.

Northeast Alabama Community College employees recently attended The Alabama Community College System Information Services Association (ACCSISA) annual conference. The conference provided professional development opportunities and face-to-face time with others from the community college system as well as vendors. Networking with peers is a valuable resource for referrals and best practices.
