Jacksonville State's Eli Jenkins has earned a spot on the 2014 CFPA Quarterback Award Watch List. The initial watch list includes 36 returning performers, vying for the top quarterback award in the Football Championship Subdivision. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration.

Jenkins was instrumental in leading JSU to an 11-4 record a year ago as the Gamecocks posted two FCS Playoff wins before falling in the Quarterfinals at Eastern Washington. Jax State had the most prolific offense in school history, setting a total of 49 school records, 13 Ohio Valley Conference records and three NCAA records.

Jenkins earned freshman All-American honors after throwing for 887 yards and running for 953 more, while finishing second on the team with 11 touchdowns in 2013.

Last season, Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston earned the CFPA National Performer of the Year Trophy.

Man arrested for Burglary Authorities have a man in custody in connection with a burglary in the Fyffe area. According to DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris, Mark Anthony Smith, 39 of Scottsboro, has been arrested for the burglary. After investigators were able to determine The Ledger, Brandon K. Pierce Smith was the suspect, warrants were obtained in DeKalb County. Smith was A new McDonald’s opened in Henagar on Thursday, June 19, 2014. The fast arrested by the Scottsboro food chain store features what management called the “latest and greatest” Police Department and was in everything. The new restaurant now gives DeKalb County a total of three charged with Burglary 3rd and Theft of Property 2nd.

- Marshall County Coroner Marlon Killion has announced he will seek re-election for a fourth term in the position. Killion, who is a licensed funeral director and embalmer, has been the county’s coroner for the past 14 years.

- Natasha Tidmore has been named the new Albertville High School Choral Director.

She will be replacing Scott Rains, who is set to retire from the Directors position in July. Tidmore is a 1987 graduate of Albertville and for the past few years she been working as a choral instructor at the middle school.

- The Sardis City Fun and Fireworks Celebration will be held on Friday, June 27, 2014. The Brooke Danielle Band has announced they will be the musical entertainment for the event. The Celebration is set to start at 5 p.m. and will be held at 1310 Church Street (behind the public library). There will be food vendors, an inflatable play area for children, and a fireworks show after dark.

- The Snead State volleyball team is hosting an individual camp on June 30 and July 1 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The camp will focus on skill development of individual players and will include position training. The cost is $50 per player and is open to players in grades four through twelve. Participants will be given a t-shirt. Each day is broken into two sessions, 9 a.m. – Noon and 1-4 p.m. Checks may be made payable to Snead State Community College. Campers should bring a signed waiver and a current physical. The 4th annual TNT Fireworks stand fundraiser is underway outside of Wal-Mart at Guntersville. From June 25 to July 5 the Guntersville High School girl’s basketball and volleyball teams will be selling the fireworks as a program fundraiser.

The Snead State Community College Dance team will be holding tryouts on Saturday, June 28 at the Snead State gym from 10-6. The stage at the amphitheater at Guntersville’s Civitan Park has been officially named in honor of Alabama’s Jeff Cook. The Guntersville City council has officially named the venue “The Jeff Cook Performing Arts Stage”. Cook is a founding member of the legendary county music group Alabama. He has a home in the Guntersville area and holds a free “Jeff Cook Day” concert at the town’s Civitan Park each August.

The fourth annual Cork & Chefs fundraiser is set for July 28, 2014 at the Town Hall in Guntersville. The event will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and will feature food and wine samples. Former University of Alabama football standout Robert Thornton was recently inducted into the Cherokee County, Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Thornton, who was a realtor from the Guntersville area, played basketball and football at Cherokee County.

Brothers Josh and Zack Wallace will have the opportunity to coach together at Sardis High School this fall. Josh has been named as the head coach of the Lady Lions Varsity Girls Basketball team, while his brother Zack has been named as the Sardis Varsity Boys head Basketball coach. Josh, who is a 1997 graduate of Crossville High School, will be replacing Scott Sandlin. Zack, who graduated from Crossville in 1999, is replacing former coach Tracy Cheek.

Twyla Haggermaker was recently hired by the Boaz City School Board of Education to serve as the varsity girls head Volleyball coach. Haggermaker, who is also an assistant coach at Snead State, will be replacing Lindsay Sullivan.

Tiffany Ponder was named the junior varsity volleyball coach. Boaz is set to open the season on August 30 at the Albertville Invitational tournament.

Marshall County Artist Lucile Rains Beginning July 1, 2014, the works of well know Guntersville artist, Lucile Smith Rains (1908-1987) will be on display at Mountain Valley Arts Council. An opening reception, hosted by family members, will be held Thursday evening, July 3rd, beginning at 5:30 pm. The exhibition will be on display through August 30th.

Rains grew up on her family farm in Warrenton, developing a love of nature, the changing seasons and, especially, Lake Guntersville and the Tennessee River.

These are reflected in many of her paintings. She painted landscapes, portraits and still life using oils and watercolors as her medium.

Rains started painting in 1949, having studied at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and was a graduate of the School of Fine Art in Westport, Connecticut. Locally, she studied under Martha Bradford and Frank Nelson. A portrait of Mrs. Rain, painted by Bradford, will be included in the exhibit.

She was an active member of the Twentieth Century Club (now the Twenty-First Century Club), which began the now annual “Art on the Lake.� In fact, she was the first to suggest having this show. She exhibited her own art many times over the years, winning several awards herself.

She was a member of the Guntersville Art Guild, and was one of several artists supporting an Art Gallery in Guntersville. When the Lake Guntersville State Park was first built, she was one of several artists invited to show their artwork there. The park also commissioned a painting from Rains to hang in their permanent collection, as did Joe Wheeler State Park. Rains was honored with a one-woman exhibition by the Twentieth Century Club, held at the Lake Guntersville Chamber of Commerce in 1981. More than 40 paintings were displayed at that time. MVAC will host a comparable number; a first time showing of her works since then.

Today, her art works are in many private and public collections around the south. Her art is noted for capturing both the beauty of our area and a sense of history in her water and riverboat scenes. She had also painted scenes such as Smith Lake, the old Marshall County Courthouse, and the original river bridge. Her favorite season was autumn, evident in many of her landscapes.

How Long Have Some Nations Hated Israel?

It is immensely interesting to me that the world has hated Israel for centuries! This little nation was under the dominion of other nations for about 2500 years, then in 1948 it became a nation again. That within itself should tell us something about God and how He works concerning the one nation that He has called His Own inheritance. No, Israel is not ready to embrace Jesus as her Messiah at the present time, but she will get ready pretty quickly when the judgments of the tribulation begin falling on the world at some point in the future. At present, according to Romans 11:25, Israel is blinded for the most part, but that will change, according to Romans 11:26-29, just prior to the coming of Jesus to the earth, not at the rapture. Zechariah 12:10 says, “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon Me Whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for Him, as one that is in bitterness for his first-born.”

Zechariah chapters 13 and 14 continue showing us what will happen to Israel at the second coming of Christ, when they are saved from their enemies and restored to favor with God!

Now I need to get to Psalm 83:1-4 to give words that look almost identical to words spoken by Iran and some other nations in our day: “Keep not Thou silence, O God: hold not Thy peace, and be not still, O God. For, lo, Thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate Thee have lifted up the head. They have taken crafty counsel against Thy people, and consulted against Thy hidden ones. They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.”

Does this sound like an up-to-date newspaper article? Recently I have heard the words of various nations who have said that Israel should be wiped off the map.

The news from God’s Word says that this will never happen, although Zechariah 14:1-2 does show a future battle against Jerusalem, in which women will be raped and houses destroyed.

Zechariah 14:3-4a has another word, however: “Then shall the LORD go forth and fight against those nations, as when He fought in the day of battle. And His feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east….”

God is not finished with Israel yet, but some nations do not know this!

Northeast College ready to help train workers for new jobs at Remington Alabama Industrial Development Training (AIDT) recently released on their website procedures for applying for jobs at the new Remington Outdoor Company plant in Huntsville. Jobs include production team members for machine operators, assembly operators, team leaders, maintenance techs, quality inspectors and materials handlers. Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) offers training programs that would qualify graduates for a number of these jobs, according to Dr. Mike Kennamer, Director of Workforce Development at NACC. “Our graduates and students should have a good opportunity to apply for many of these jobs,” said Kennamer. “Our Machine Tool Technology (MTT) program provides the training needed to operate computerized numeric control (CNC) machines, and our Industrial Systems Technology and Industrial Electronics programs provide the training necessary to function as a maintenance technician,” stated Kennamer. “In addition, students from our Engineering Technology (ENT) program could serve as quality inspectors and team leaders,” he concluded.

The College’s Industrial Systems Technology (IST) Center, which opened in 2010, includes state of the art facilities for machine tool technology, industrial systems technology, and welding technology.

The Machine Tool Technology facility contains 14 computer stations with computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software, seven CNC simulators, a coordinate measuring machine, a coordinate measuring machine with scanning capabilities, six computer numeric controlled (CNC) lathes and six CNC mills.

The college purchased all new equipment for the program and continues to update it so that students will have every possible advantage in entering the workforce.

The Engineering Technology program is housed in the college’s new state-of-the-

art Math, Science, and Engineering Technology Center and Industrial Systems Technology and Industrial Electronics have labs in the IST Building, Technology Center, and Industry Training Center on the NACC campus.

Will Roberts, MTT instructor at NACC called Remington’s move to the area exciting, since it brings more machining jobs to the area. “We are always excited to see a new industry locate in the region,” stated Roberts. “We are especially happy when they hire our students,” he continued.

NACC offers the short term certificate in machine tool technology, as well as a certificate and Associate in Applied Science degree in Industrial Systems Technology – Machine Tool option. The short term certificate may be completed in two semesters while the certificate and degree take four and five semesters respectively.

The AAS degree program includes a required work experience, such as cooperative education or apprenticeship.

The Industrial Systems Technology, Engineering Technician, and Industrial Electronics programs may be completed on a similar schedule. Federal financial aid, including Pell Grants, Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and student loans are available to those who qualify.

“Our primary mission in regard to workforce development is to provide the training and work skills that will lead to jobs for our students. We commit our workforce programs to achieving this goal,” stated Dr. David Campbell, NACC President. “Consequently, our students obtaining jobs with Remington will help both them and the college succeed.”

The big fireworks show will be one of the highlights of the festival held at the city park. The big car, truck and motorcycle show will be another. There will also be arts and crafts, music, magic shows, pony rides and more. Admission will be free.

At the halfway point of the year, it’s clear the second half of 2014 will be chockfull of intriguing events. For example, the first Rainsville Farmers Market will be on July 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the city park. I believe they will take place there each Thursday this summer.

Also coming up in July, the Players in Progress youth theatre will present their summer play, The Frog Princess, on July 4-5 at 7 p.m. at the Tom Bevill Enrichment

Center. July 11-13 and 18-20 are the dates for the NACC theatre production of The 39 Steps. RTI’s Summer Movie in the Park is planned for July 19.

In August, the calendar includes the first Northeast Alabama Hunting & Outdoor Expo on August 2-3 at the Agri-Business Center. Farmers Telecommunication’s annual meeting is also August 2. RTI’s Charity Mud Volleyball Tournament is August 9. Our own third annual Scholarship Golf Tournament is August 23.

In Chamber news, we have two new members to report. The first is Carter Orthodontics which will open soon in the Rainsville Clinic building on Church Avenue. That’s directly behind Regions.

Look for the new teal-colored sign at the southwest corner of the building. Dr. Jared Carter will offer orthodontic services including traditional and invisible braces for children and adults.

The other new member is Vapor Mark, a new store located at 611 Main Street West. They offer electronic cigarettes and related liquids and accessories. Drop by the store for information about the fast growing alternative to tobacco, and how a large number of people are using electronic cigarettes to gradually reduce their nicotine levels.

I have been encouraging others to watch different sports over the last several months. I explained how exciting hockey is if you actually sit down and take the time to watch and learn the game. Well, hockey season is over, so what now?

The World Cup is currently going on and we (USA) have a solid team. I am not sure if we have what it takes to win it all, but we should all be supporting the team.

It's exciting, I mean what other sport has something like this where the entire world is competing to be champions?

We don't have it in baseball or football. It's just so much fun to watch and soccer can be an exciting sport.

It takes stamina and real skills to be able to play the game and to be able to perform well. Like I said, I am not sure if our team has what it takes to win it all, but I am hopeful. We have been doing well so far and only time will tell. It would be amazing to have our country known for having the best soccer team.

So, turn on the TV and watch any of the games, you will see passion from the players and the fans that you don't see in most sports.
