Buford Claims 8th Straight State Championship
T
he 2014 Lady Wolves claimed their eighth straight state title and first in AAAA with a 9-1 victory over Thomas County Central Lady Yellowjackets Saturday, Nov. 1 at the Sports Complex in Columbus. Saturday’s game was a rematch of the previous night’s game against Thomas County Central in which Buford defeated the Yellowjackets 13 – 2. Thomas County had played earlier on Saturday, defeating Carrolton in order to get their chance to face Buford again. Adding to the tension was the very cold, very windy weather, which created extra challenges like potentially wild throws from cold hands, and making fly balls harder to catch. According to Lady Wolves Baylee Sexton, however, the girls weren’t focused on the weather, because their coach, Tony Wolfe told the team “Don’t think about the weather. It’s not cold outside. It’s not hot outside. It’s just Buford softball.” Bria Bush was on the hill and didn’t want to disappoint the crowd that made their way down I-85 to witness history as Buford was looking to tie Oconee County for the most state titles in girls’ softball. Bush (19-0, 2 Saves) didn’t disappoint as she notched her 19th win and 16th complete game. She allowed 1 hit, 1 earned run, 5 strikeouts and 2 walks.
The Lady Wolves won 5 AA, 2 AAA and their first in AAAA. The senior class finished with a 140-16 record, the best of any of the Buford 4-year runs. This year’s team ended on a 28game winning streak after Gordon Lee stopped the 9-0 record to start the season. With a bases loaded walk in the third inning by Jordan Deep, the Wolves led 3 -0. The flood gates opened in the bottom of the fourth as the Lady Wolves erupted for six runs, with Alexus Murray, Gabby Benson, and Sydney Stavro all getting singles, while Tessa Daniels walked to drive in a run. Remington Hasty hit a deep double for two RBI’s. Thomas County got a run to pull within 7-1 in the top of the fifth inning but Buford closed it out with a run in the bottom half, and one in the bottom of the sixth. The game was called due to the mercy rule. For the exiting 2015 Senior Class Lady Wolves, this was the best ever season for percentages at .897. The seven girls leave the team as they came in, as state champions.

O
n Tuesday night, Sept. 23, before their home game against Chestatee, the Buford Softball family came together to recognize and honor the Class of 2015. The awards and recognition that these Class members have received are too many to list. But one thing is certain……all seven of these girls have played with poise and class. They have conducted themselves on and off the field in a manner that their family, school, and community can be proud of. Most of all, these young ladies have carried on the mantra of Trust*Delight*Commit, which is the foundation of the Buford Softball program. Coach Tony Wolfe had this to say about the seven, “We are proud of them, how unselfish they have been and how much pride they take in our program and school and community. They are awesome students in the classroom too.” The Lady Wolves have the highest winning percentage of any class in Buford High School history (.890); are three time State Champions, and 2012 and 2013 Region Champions. As of October 1, their record is 129-16.
