elcome to the second issue of Lake Country GOLF Magazine. That’s right, we are official -- and here to stay. I started the concept of a localized golf magazine two weeks before the 2014 Masters Tournament, where I wanted to create a “golfer’s guide” to the lake area for the thousands of guests that visit during that particular week. Since then, that idea has evolved into a monthly, fullfledged magazine -- covering everything golf in Georgia’s Lake Country. I expanded the guide concept, and by utilizing our QR coding system (infomation can be found below), desired business locations can be found with a simple scan. No longer do you have to call or ask for directions, simply scan the code and the business address is entered into the devices navigation system. We call it -- SCAN & GO.

We have partnered with Maggie’s Golf Shop (formerly The Golf Locker) to bring you equipment information and sales each month. Stop by there if you are in the market to upgrade your game, and check out their section each month for some great deals on name brand merchandise. Don’t forget to say hello to Maggie when you go. I particularly enjoyed this month’s coverage because I got to see golf’s future at work. I witnessed some great talent at Great Waters, where the US Amateur Qualifier #2 tournament was held. The lake area was well represented with three native golfers in the field. The Eatonton Elks Lodge held their annual Junior Golf Clinic at Uncle Remus Golf Course. It’s always a pleasure to see golfing’s past teach the morals and values to golfing’s future. My son (on the cover) attends each year, and I would recommend it to anyone with a child 5-15 years old. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I did creating it, and please send me your pictures, comments and criticism.

SCAN & GO USER INFORMATION

It is the easiest way to obtain directions. Simply scan the code with your phone or tablet and the navigation coordinates are automatically entered into the devices navigation software. Press “GO”, and GPS will direct you to the front door of your destination. QR Code Scanning software can be downloaded for free at the App Store (iPhone/iPad) and Google Play store (Android).

GET OFF THE TEE WITH DISTANCE AND ACCURACY

Callaway Big Bertha 5

STARS

Eight settings on the ajustable hosel independently change loft and lie angle. A sliding eight-gram weight in the back adds a draw or fade bias. The re-engineered variable-thickness face is designed for a larger seet spot than last year’s RAZR Fit Xtreme, and a lightweight composite crown makes a more traditional D-2 swingweight possible. HOT: Callaway has smartly enhanced its adjustable features, including the sliding eight-gram weight.

Cobra Bio Cell+ 5

STARS

The adjustable hosel has eight settings across 3 degrees of loft. Each version saves weight with a lighter variable-thickness face. More weight is saved using a thin, waffled pattern in the rear crown. The more compact Bio Cell+ benefits from a lightweight multimaterial alloy in the crown. HOT: The crown and face designs are smart, the adjustability is straightforward, and the color selections are welcome.

Nike VRS Covert 2.0 5

STARS

Lake Country GOLF August, 2014

Designers strengthened the sole-cavity’s internal frame to reduce energy loss. Both models have larger faces than last year and increased stability on off-center strikes. An adjustable hosel allows each of the five lofts to be matched with a neutral, left or right face angle. HOT: The tweaks from last year are subtle, but the result is more forgiveness to go with unique adjustability.

IRONS

HITTING GREENS IN REGULATION JUST BECAME EASIER

Callaway Apex Pro The head has tungsten weights across the center of the sole of the 3-through 5-irons to help launch the ball. A higher CG in the short irons helps control trajectory. The stock shaft is the KBS Tour V-Spec. HOT: With a slightly wider sole than the X Forged and a new grove design that delivers higher launch out of the rough, this is a club thathigher single-digit handicappers can appreciate, and one even Ben Hogan would be proud of.

5

STARS

Mizuno JPX-EZ The 4-through 6-iron slots are occupied by Mizuno’s JPX Fli-Hi hybrids. A special heat treatment used in the casting process helps get the multiple-thickness face as this as two millimeters. The cavity, sole width and offset are progressively reduced as the set moves into the shorter irons. HOT: A tweener super game-improvement iron that can help the high-handicapper and the player trendig toward a sub-15 handicap

5

STARS

Ping G25 The 17-4 stainless-steel clubhead features progressive sole widths that help optimize the CG location for better distance-gapping between irons. The custom tuning port has been positioned directly in line with the impact area to save weight and increase the MOI. HOT: The G25 is the epitome of Ping equipment, where the horsepower is mostly under the hood. It’s an iron that produces reliable results for a wide variety of ability levels.

PUTTERS

18

CONFIDENTLY HIT THE MOST IMPORTANT SHOT

Nike Method MOD Based on a classic mallet shape (the 1970’s-throwback Ram Zebra), the MOD-00 is face-balanced and has seven sight lines on the back flange. The computer-milled face features polymer-filled grooves to start the ball rolling quicker and to reduce skidding. Heel and toe sole weights increase forgiveness.

5

HOT: These smaller mallets with a traditional shape offer a comfortable look, but the innovation here gives them bigmallet performance.

STARS

Odyssey X-Milled 5

STARS

These putters are milled from 1020 carbon steel and feature a face with a chemically etched surface pattern. The interlocking oval dimples on the face are designed to reduce the contact area for a quieter impact sound and to increase friction between the face and ball for a quicker forward roll. HOT: The Metal-X Milled shows that Odyssey doesn’t need an insert to deliver face technology.

Ping Nome TR 5

STARS

Lake Country GOLF August, 2014

The frame is made from lightweight, high-grade aluminum and has tungsten-composite sole weights to produce a higher MOI for better stability on off-center hits. The face features variable-depth grooves to promote consistent impact across the face. An adjustable-shaft version allows for putter lengths of 31 to 38 inches. HOT: This prototypical mallet exudes consistency, and the three shaft bends are a nice bonus for a mallet.

WEDGES

GET UP AND DOWN FROM ANY LIE

Callaway Mack Daddy 2 Forged from 1020 carbon steel, the wedge line features two groove patterns. The lower-lofted wedges use a narrow groove for control on full swings, and the higher lofts have larger groove for more spin from greenside rough. A laser-milled pattern between the grooves increases surface roughness to improve short-game shots. HOT: This series is the company’s most complete wedge line to date.

5

STARS

Cleveland 588 RTX The company’s “zip” grooves are 16-percent larger than the were in 2012 for better spin out of the rough. The face features two surface textures for enhanced control. The Rotex pattern uses milled, angled curves to improve consistency on open-face shots. Laser-etched lines between the grooves help make the surface roughness more uniform. HOT: Cleveland has made every effort to maximize spin and control distance.

5

STARS

Titleist Vokey SM5 The wedge’s groove pattern changes depending on the loft. Lower lofts have narrower groves for trajectory control, and higher lofts use deeper grooves for more spin from the rough. A heat treatment is applied to the impact area during the casting process to improve durability. HOT: Exceptional trajectory control and spin control with both open and closed face shots.

G

olf is seen as a game of splitting fairways, hitting greens and saving pars. But, underneath the physical athletics and mechanics of the swing is something much deeper -- something that originated with the sport itself -Integrity, Honesty, Forever and Fun. Golf is the only major sport in which you keep your own score, win and lose with dignity and penalize yourself for breaking the rules. It is only after these basic morals and values of the game are learned that one can begin playing golf, and for three days spanning the month of July, members of the Eatonton Elks Lodge volunteered their time to teach these lessons to the future of the sport. “Golf is a game that is played between the ears, and that is what we have to teach to these kids first,” Rusty Stevens, Elks Club member and coordinator of the clinic, said. “This game, if taught properly, will give kids a good foundation for the rest of their lives.” The first two days of the clinic consisted of 5 stations where different lessons were taught in 30 minute intervals. The final day, delayed by early morning down pours, gave the kids a chance to compete in minitournaments and earn trophies for their accomplishments. The clinic is hosted annually and welcomes children ages 5-12 of any skill level. Contact the Eatonton Elks Lodge for information regarding next years event.
