Law enforcement agencies in California will soon be able to issue formal notices to self-driving cars for alleged traffic violations under a new law that goes into effect in 2026. AB1777, authored by former state Assemblyman Phil Ting, D-San Francisco, establishes greater regulations on autonomous vehicles when encountering law enforcement or emergency response personnel. Law enforcement will be allowed to issue “notices of autonomous vehicle noncompliance” to the manufacturers of driverless cars. The manufacturers would then be required to notify the Department of Motor Vehicles of the alleged violation. Police: Woman arrested for pepper-spraying family

A woman has been arrested for allegedly purposefully hitting another car and pepper-spraying the occupants of the car she struck, Palo Alto police said. Police responded to the 700 block of Embarcadero Road on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. on a report that a man in his 20s was a victim of a road YAQOOB rage incident, police said. The man told police that

he and his family were traveling eastbound on Embarcadero and was trying to change lanes to make a left turn. A gray Nissan Sentra driven by Mahima Yaqoob, 26, of Lakeport, would not let the man change lanes and would accelerate to block him, according to police. At a red light, Yaqoob made a U-turn and hit the man’s car, police said. Yaqoob then got out of her car and threatened the man before hitting him with her keys and pepper spraying him, police said. The passenger of the man’s car,

a woman in her 20s, also got out of their car, and was also pepper sprayed by Yaqoob, police said. The man’s four children, ages 9, 4, 4 and 1, were in the car and also exposed to the pepper spray. Yaqoob drove away before police got to the scene. The family received medical aid. Yaqoob was ultimately arrested in South San Francisco on Sunday. She was booked into jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful use of tear gas, and child endangerment.

Margaret Marietta Pepple ¢ April 19, 1928 – Dec. 19, 2025 ¢ Margaret Pepple, 97, passed away on December 19, 2025, at home with her children at her side in Palo Alto, California. Margaret was born April 19, 1928, in Odin, Illinois, the eldest of two children, to Elester “Leck” Harville and Martha (VanSant) Harville. She attended Odin School 1st grade through high school, where she graduated twice! She graduated from 11th grade, then the school district added 12th grade so she went one more year and graduated again. Margaret went on to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale where she met her future husband, Wayne, whom she married March 27, 1949. Margaret and Wayne farmed for a short time in Illinois before moving across the country a couple of times due to Wayne’s military service. They moved back to Illinois briefly, and finally settled down in Palo Alto, CA. They never lost their ties to Illinois, though. In retirement they enjoyed splitting their time between their house in Palo Alto and Margaret’s beloved childhood home in Odin. Margaret was always busy her whole life. She spent a summer working in a dress factory in a nearby town as a teenager, where she honed her sewing skills. While Wayne was serving in the Marines, she worked in retail in San Diego and North Carolina. She drove a van transporting students home from Castilleja girls’ school in Palo Alto, volunteered at a local food pantry, worked in a daycare center, and was a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a highly skilled seamstress, sewing everything from her wedding dress to placemats for every holiday or season, pillows, decorative items, and dresses for her daughters and herself. Her culinary skills were greatly appreciated by her family and friends. She also had a musical talent that she passed down to her children. Besides playing the piano, she was a member of a hand bell choir well into her 90’s. Travel was something that was ingrained in her DNA. Her parents always said her middle name should have been Go because if anyone mentioned going somewhere, Margaret would beat them to the car, ready to go, too. She was always ready to head out on an adventure or just a trip to a local park. As soon as she got home, she was plotting her next outing. She enjoyed many travels throughout her life, visiting all 50 states, many more than once. She also visited many countries, including England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Australia. If you wanted her to stay in one place, you would have had to tie her down somehow. Margaret was devoted to her church, where she was a long-time member. She served in many capacities, such as secretary, held leadership roles in membership, and organized activities for the members of the church. She was an elder for many years, visiting those who were sick and couldn’t attend church, taking them communion, serving at the communion table, and numerous other duties. Margaret spent countless hours volunteering for anything and everything that needed to be done. She didn’t see her work at the church as a duty, though, but as a privilege. Margaret is predeceased by her husband of 76 years, Wayne, her parents, her brother, Leonard Harville, her many aunts and uncles, and numerous friends. She is dearly missed by her children, Merriam (Bob) Hanley, Tehachapi, CA; Monica Pepple, Bloomington, IL; and Loren Pepple, Odin, IL; as well as numerous other family and friends. A funeral service will be held 11am, January 3rd, 2026, at Odin Christian Church with burial to follow at the Peaceful Valley Cemetery in Odin, Illinois. In lieu of flowers and to honor Margaret’s memory, the family suggests donations to a church or charity of your choice.

Maureen F. Roskoph

¢ Nov. 27, 1939 – Dec. 21, 2025 ¢ Maureen F. Roskoph, a long time resident of Palo Alto, CA passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025 with her husband of 63 years, Paul, at her bedside. Maureen, born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1939, was the only child of Stanley Fromkes and Lillian Fromkes. She attended Cleveland Heights High School and received her Bachelor of Arts degree at The Ohio State University, where she met her husband-to-be at the end of her sophomore year. They married during Paul’s senior year of law school and resided in Columbus, then Highland Park, Illinois while Paul completed his stint in the US Army. After a short return to Cleveland, they settled in Palo Alto where they resided during the remainder of her lifetime. Their marriage produced two wonderful children, Robert Roskoph (Lauren) and Julie Roskoph Mell and five adoring grandchildren: Adin, Myles and Shayna Roskoph and Lillian and McKenzie Mell. Maureen excelled as a wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, friend, organizer, hostess, advisor, cuddler of infants at Stanford Children’s Hospital, volunteer and board member of numerous organizations. She was loving and beloved. Her smile, charm and heart attracted people as honey attracts bees, and she was the glue to her large family of cousins. Maureen loved life, people and most of all her family. At the birth of her first grandchild, she made a weekly round trip drive to Davis, California to bond. The same was true with all the grandchildren - but she was fortunate to have all grandchildren live in the area to allow her to nurture and be the beneficiaries of her smile, joy, travel adventures and love. And her homemade cookies were always out for the kids and their friends. Her house was the stop-over on the way home from school. Maureen started her post-college work as an elementary school teacher, took time off to be a devoted mother while the children were in grade school then found herself loving to share the day at the Stanford University Blood Bank, initially as a recruiter of blood donors, then gaining prominence as the coordinator of volunteers for the Blood Bank. She solicited and obtained weekly donations from merchants for movies for the lengthy apheresis procedure that would take 2 hours, as well as muffins, cookies, candies and goodies after blood donations. Maureen also volunteered weekly in the Children’s Hospital Gift Shop inventorying and stocking the candy which was constantly flying off the shelves. This led to a weekly Monday night out dinner with Paul and friends who shared the activity. Family displaced, dogs killed in fire

Menlo Park fire officials are investigating what caused a house fire that displaced a family and killed their two dogs. Neighbors alerted the family living at 1304 Hill Ave. in the Belle Haven neighborhood that their home was on fire just before 2 a.m. on Monday, Deputy Chief Dan Coyle said. When firefighters arrived, flames were about 10 feet over the building, Coyle said.

They’re ready to embark on 2026. Three more dog breeds joined the American Kennel Club’s roster of recognized breeds yesterday, making them eligible for many U.S. dog shows and likely increasing their visibility to the pet-loving public. One of the newcomers is a terrier named for a U.S. president. Another is a toy dog from Cold War-era Russia. The third is a centuries-old French hunting hound. Here’s a closer look:

Basset fauve de Bretagne The stats: 12.5 to 15.5 inches at the base of the neck; 23 to 39 pounds The topline: A hardy, sociable, compact hound that can hunt all day — and needs mental and physical activity. The pronunciation: bah-SAY’ fove deh brehTAHN’-yeh The translation: Fawn-colored, lowset dog from Brittany The history: Versions of these coarse-coated, tan-hued hounds go back at least as far as 16th-century French aristocratic circles. The breed has been championed in the U.S. in recent years by Cindy Hartman, a South Carolina service dog trainer who brought a pair of fauve puppies back from France in 2001. She has since trained and placed about 20 fauves as medical alert dogs for people with diabetes, she said. Teddy Roosevelt terrier The stats: 8 to 14 inches at the base of the neck; 8 to 25 pounds

Zuckerberg family The Palo Alto Police Foundation (PAPF) received a charitable donation from Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan. The Police Foundation was formed in 2022. The goal is to support the Palo Alto Police Department by funding important needs not covered by the City’s budget. The second goal is to strengthen trust and collaboration between the police department and the community. This past year, the Foundation held a community gathering at El Prado hotel with guest speakers being Palo Alto Mayor Ed Lauing and Police Chief Andrew Binder. Over 80 guests were at the event. The Foundation also held a grand opening tour of the new Public Safety Building at 250 Sherman Ave. Participants were intrigued by having an inside look into how the police department operates. We understand that other checks from the Zuckerberg family have been given this year to other charities in Palo Alto. We are blessed with having so many charities doing such great work in our town and helping other communities such as East Palo Alto. The new year is a time when many try to start new good habits and commit to improving health and wellness. But resolutions, lofty as they may be, can turn daunting quickly with all the advice and sometimes contradicting information coming at you from news reports, advertisers, influencers, friends and even politicians. But they don’t have to be. This year, The Associated Press got the down-low on all manner of health and wellness claims and fads. The good news is that the experts mostly say to keep it simple. As 2026 arrives, here’s what you should pay attention to. Protein and fiber When it comes to your diet, experts say most people can skip the upcharge. If you’re eating enough, you’re probably getting enough protein and don’t need products that promise some big boost. And it’s true that most people could use more fiber in their diets. But, please, ditch the “fiber-maxxing” trend.

Instead, eat whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains. Skin care That 20-step skin care routine and $200 serum some TikToker sold you on? Dermatologists say you really don’t need it. Stay away from the beef tallow and slather on a good sunscreen instead (yes, even if you have darker skin), they say. And the same rule for simplicity applies to that hourlong “everything shower.” The best showers are simple and short, dermatologists say, no “double cleansing” required. Working out If the gym and all its equipment feel intimidating, you can drop the illusion that a good workout requires either. This year, the comeback of calisthenics put the focus back on no frills, bodyweight workouts you can do at home. Research shows calisthenics helps with muscle strength and aerobic conditioning. You may eventually need weightlifting, but it is a great way to start.
