A woman who was driving on the wrong side of Interstate 280 near Woodside before colliding with another car – killing the car’s driver – was sentenced to nine years in prison after taking a plea deal yesterday, a prosecutor said. Constellatia Martin, 24, Campbell, pled no contest to manslaughter, hit and run and driving under the influence of drugs, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Shin-Mee Chang. Man in gym dispute arrested, guns seized
A man who allegedly threatened another man with a gun at a Redwood City gym has been arrested, police said yesterday. Police were called to the Planet Fitness at 200 Walnut St. on Dec. 12 at 2:49 a.m. and learned that two men got into a disagreement at the gym, according to a statement from Lt. Jeff Clements. The two men stepped outside and at that point, one of the men, Louie Yu, 38, of Georgia, pulled
out a gun “in a threatening manner within a very close proximity” to the other man, Clements said. The man went back into the gym, and Yu left, according to Clements, the exchange was caught on security cameras. ID’d through video Police were able to identify the man with the gun as Yu, and got a search warrant for him, his vehicle and storage locker.
On Wednesday, police found Yu in his car in San Bruno and arrested him, Clements said. Yu had a loaded gun hidden on him when he was arrested and when police searched his vehicle and storage locker, they found five guns, two fake guns, multiple high-capacity magazines and over 1,500 rounds of ammunition, Clements said. Yu was booked into jail on suspicion of assault with a gun. His bail is $50,000 and will be in court today.

Police: Woman inside car shot dead
A woman was found fatally shot inside a car in Sunnyvale, the city’s Department of Public Safety said yesterday. Officers responded at 9:39 p.m. to a

Pay bump set for interim city chief BY ADRIANA HERNANDEZ Daily Post Staff Writer
San Carlos will give its new interim city manager a pay increase while it searches for the replacement for retiring City Manager Jeff Maltbie. Assistant City Manager Nil Blackburn has been appointed by council to be the interim city manager starting Jan. 16, with a 5% pay increase. Blackburn received $310,655 in total wages in 2024, according to Transparent California. Maltbie, 52, is retiring and leaving the city after 25 years, including 15 as city manager.

Health Mushroom death leads to warning
Sonoma County health officials issued an advisory yesterday warning people away from eating wild mushrooms following the weekend death of a county resident. The county’s interim health officer Dr. Michael Stacey said early rains and a mild fall resulted in a bumper crop of wild, toxic death cap mushrooms in Northern California. “Eating wild mushrooms gathered without expert identification can be unsafe,” Stacey said. “Some harmful varieties closely resemble edible mushrooms, even to experienced foragers.”
Safety tips • The best way to stay safe is to not eat wild mushrooms. • Avoid eating mushrooms picked by friends or family. • Watch children closely when they play outside where mushrooms grow. Among pediatric mushroom poisonings, the majority occur in children under 6 years old. • Keep pets away from wild mushrooms — animals can be poisoned too. • Buy mushrooms only from trusted grocery stores and retailers. Take care when buying mushrooms from street vendors.

AI products top list of ‘worst’ at CES The promise of artificial intelligence was front and center at this year’s CES gadget show. But spicing up a simple machine like a refrigerator with unnecessary AI was also a surefire way to win the “Worst in Show.” The annual contest that no tech company wants to win announced its decisions yesterday. Among those getting the notorious “anti-awards” for invasive, wasteful or fragile products were an eye-tracking AI “soulmate” companion for combating loneliness, a musical lollipop and new AI features for Amazon’s widely used doorbell cameras.
‘Bespoke AI’ fridge Samsung’s “Bespoke AI Family Hub” refrigerator received the overall “Worst in Show” recognition from the group of consumer and privacy advocates who judged the contest. Samsung invites users to speak to the refrigerator and command it to open or close the door, but a demonstration at the sprawling Las Vegas technology expo showed it didn’t always detect what people were saying if there was too much ambient noise. Leaves and bodies fall in “No Other Choice,” Park Chan-wook’s masterfully devilish satire with a chilling autumnal wind blowing through it. “Come on, fall,” urges You Man-su (Lee Byung-hun) as he grills an eel for dinner for his family in the opening moments of Park’s film. He’s eager for the season to start but unprepared for the amount of cyclical collapse — familial, economic, even existential — that Park has in store. Man-su pronounces the very thing no movie protagonist ever should: “I’ve got it all.” He lives with his wife, Miri (Son Ye-jin), and two children (Kim Woo Seung, Choi So Yul) in a handsome modernist house in the woods, with two golden retrievers. But almost as soon as he says that, Mansu’s fortunes turn. Desperate times After 25 years at a paper mill, Mansu is laid off, as are many others, with little fanfare or apology. Desperation begins to set in. He’s forced to sell the home he loves so dearly, including the attached greenhouse where he tends to plants and bonsai trees. They even have to, horror of horrors, cancel Netflix. Another movie might have sunk
been wanting to make his film for almost two decades. Either way, the two movies would make one hell of a destabilizing double feature. If “Parasite” was the feat of an ensemble, “No Other Choice” belongs to Lee. His Man-su is no killer at heart, and his attempts to become one are as comical as they are Dostoyevskian. The tone is so farcical that the gruesomeness of some of Man-su’s acts come slyly. How many movies have we seen about a parent driven, heroically, to extremes to defend their family? Man-su’s circumstance is frightfully understandable. “Our family is in a war,” he says. To keep them happy — in particular Miri — Man-su thinks whatever it takes is necessary. The dynamic started when SamTrans contributed $82 million of the $202 million needed to buy the railroad right-of-way from Southern Pacific in 1991. In 2008, SamTrans agreed to accept the two county’s share of repayment and waive millions of dollars in interest in exchange for being designated as Caltrain’s managing agency for as long as it wished, according to a report to the Caltrain board. Attempts to reduce SamTrans’ role have been made in the past. In 2020,
