COLOMBIAN PREZ INVITED: President Trump abruptly changed his tone about his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro. Trump said yesterday they had exchanged a friendly phone call and he had invited the leader of the South American country to the White House. Trump posted on his social media site that Petro “called to explain the situation of drugs and other disagreements that we have had.” Trump had said after the U.S. operation to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro that “Colombia is very sick too” and accused Petro of ”making cocaine and selling it to the United States.” MORE MEAT: New guidelines for healthy eating say Americans should eat more whole foods and protein, fewer highly processed foods and less added sugar. Dr. Thomas Fogarty, a renowned cardiologist, inventor and the owner of a well-known winery on Skyline Boulevard, has died. He was 91 years old. Fogarty, a Los Altos resident, died on Dec. 28 and is best known for inventing a device to help remove blood clots in the legs with minimally invasive surgery, called the Fogarty balloon embolectomy catheter. He was also involved in the creation of a tissue heart valve and an aortic stent graft, both of

Over the course of his career, Fogarty was awarded more than 190 medical patents and founded or co-founded more than 45 medical technology companies. He received a Presidential Medal of Technology and Innovation from President Barack Obama in 2014.

Fogarty was also inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2007, he founded the medical innovation incubator Fogarty Innovation at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View. Fogarty was born on Feb. 25 in Cincinnati, Ohio and was the youngest of three siblings. An early inventor, at 15 he invented a special clutch for the Cushman motor scooter that connects its engine to the wheels. Fogarty said in a 2024 interview that he was not [See FOGARTY, page 18]

Fire officials look into garage blaze BY STEPHANIE LAM Daily Post Correspondent

Mountain View fire officials are investigating what caused a garage fire that displaced seven people and caused $50,000 in damage yesterday. At 5:38 a.m., emergency dispatchers received reports of smoke and fire coming from a single-family residence in the 700 block of San Pablo Drive near Highway 85. The residents evacuated before firefighters arrived on scene, according to Robert Maitland, a spokesman for the fire department. Firefighters saw smoke coming from the garage, and extinguished the flames before they could spread into the home or neighboring residences.

Child dies from flu

San Mateo County public health officials yesterday reported the death of an adolescent from the influenza virus. The death occurred last month involving a child who had not received this year’s flu shot, and county officials said they did not know if there were underlying health conditions in the case. It is the second flu-related death in San Mateo County this season.

Teens spend more than an hour on smartphones on average during school, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study, conducted by the National Institutes of Health and published Monday, analyzed data from 640 adolescents aged 13 to 18 who participated in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Smartphone use was measured using a mobile phone application. “We found that teens spent more than an hour on their phones during the school day on average, largely on social media, video, and gaming apps,” said lead author Jason M. Nagata, professor of pediatrics at UC San Fran-

cisco. “That time inevitably competes with attention to learning.”

Key findings • Adolescents spent an average of 1.16 hours per day on smartphones during school hours. • Social media apps (Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat) accounted for the most school-time smartphone use, followed by video apps (YouTube) and games. • Older adolescents (16-18), Black youth, and adolescents from lower-income households showed higher smartphone use during school hours compared with peers. • Objective smartphone data highlight that phones remain a significant presence during the school day, even amid school policies aimed at limiting use.

Can ‘The Pitt’ up the ante in Season 2? When we first glimpse Noah Wyle’s Michael Robinavitch — aka Dr. Robby, of course — in Season 2 of “The Pitt,” he’s looking darned good, truth be told. The beloved ER doc is riding his motorcycle to work, wearing nice shades, hair rustling in the early-morning Pittsburgh breeze. Wait — hair rustling? It’s only then we notice what’s missing. Can it be that Robby — dedicated, wise, overworked, charming and brilliant — isn’t wearing a helmet? It’s such a jarring sight that, launching a Zoom interview with Wyle, it’s one of the first things we must inquire about. Did we remember that right? Were we supposed to notice? Yes and yes. “You’re supposed to notice that he doesn’t wear it,” Wyle confirms. “But then, he tells people that he does. Which means, you know he’s lying. We don’t know what else he’s lying about.” Character study More broadly, it’s all part of the goal this new season, after an impactful, Emmy-winning debut that culminated with a mass shooting. There were worries that they wouldn’t be able to up the ante. Well, the idea is not to up the ante, Wyle says, but to more deeply explore characters and their issues. “Our job isn’t to come up with another stunt that creates drama to be the catalyst for excitement on the show,”
