Minimum wage is going up
With the new year, the minimum wage has increased in several cities. In Palo Alto, it jumped by 50 cents an hour to $18.70 an hour, a 2.7% increase. It went up to $19.70 in Mountain View, which now has the second-highest minimum wage in the Bay Area, with Emeryville topping the list when its minimum wage rose to $19.90 on July 1, 2025. In Los Altos, the minimum went to $18.70. For cities in San Mateo Coun-
ty, minimum wages increased to $18.95 in Belmont, $18.65 in Redwood City, $18.60 in San Mateo, $17.91 in Half Moon Bay, $17.90 in East Palo Alto, $17.86 in Burlingame, $17.85 in Foster City, $17.75 in San Carlos, and $17.55 in Menlo Park. Politicians have increased the minimum wage to help poor workers, but employers often deal with the increases by reducing the number of hours employees are assigned to work.
Cities usually have exceptions in their minimum wage ordinances for businesses that have union contracts, so people like housekeepers and gardeners who join a union are often paid less than the minimum wage. The statewide minimum wage rose to $16.90 from $16.50, but many cities in the Bay Area have ordinances that allow them to set higher minimum wages to help reflect the high costs of living in the region.

But Binder shouldn’t acquiesce to Caltrain’s secrecy demands. Sheriff Binder, if a death or serious crime happened anywhere else in the county, you’d inform the public about it promptly. It shouldn’t be any different if it involves Caltrain.

Holiday Thank You to Our Neighbor the
Zuckerberg family The Palo Alto Police Foundation (PAPF) received a charitable donation from Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan. The Police Foundation was formed in 2022. The goal is to support the Palo Alto Police Department by funding important needs not covered by the City’s budget. The second goal is to strengthen trust and collaboration between the police department and the community. This past year, the Foundation held a community gathering at El Prado hotel with guest speakers being Palo Alto Mayor Ed Lauing and Police Chief Andrew Binder. Over 80 guests were at the event. The Foundation also held a grand opening tour of the new Public Safety Building at 250 Sherman Ave. Participants were intrigued by having an inside look into how the police department operates. We understand that other checks from the Zuckerberg family have been given this year to other charities in Palo Alto. We are blessed with having so many charities doing such great work in our town and helping other communities such as East Palo Alto. These hardworking charities are much appreciative of these additional funds. Thank you to the Zuckerberg family for starting Facebook now Meta in Palo Alto. Looking ahead, the sun will start rising around 7:30 daylight time toward the end of February. Something to keep in mind next time you hear the idea of changing to yearround Daylight Saving Time. Wrong priorities
Dear Editor: This is a letter to our representatives in the state Legislature, Assemblyman Josh Becker and Sen. Marc Berman: I received your latest updates, thankyou. I’m glad you have had a rewarding year passing bills in Sacramento. But for those of us on the “outside” — the residents — the state of California has other issues too. For example, our state ranks 45 out of 50 in the transportation sector most relevant to us mere mortals — road-
ways — and it shows. We rank 50 out of 50 on homelessness, in spite of mass infusions of voters’ money. Amid the recent years of energy shortages, we initially moved to abandon hydroelectric and gas plants and tried three times to kill the sector that provides 25% of our power with no hydrocarbon emissions. Your major campaign donors — the teachers’ unions — have blocked repeated efforts to improve public school teacher performance. We have paid billions in false EDD claims, let PG&E and SoCal Edison pass on their court-proven liabilities to ratepayers (us), driven insurers from the state, driven employers from the state, released convicted criminals in lieu of cleaning up prisons, and lost nearly a $450 million to failed 911 and FI$CAL (sic) systems updates, now abandoned. Ah, but we still are pushing high-speed rail. So I’m glad you are pleased, I admire your spirit, and I hope you enjoyed the holidays. The game started with the San Francisco 49ers unable to generate a single first down in the first quarter. It ended with Brock Purdy on his back after a crushing hit on a fourth-down incompletion. It wasn’t much better in between for the 49ers. An offense that was nearly unstoppable during a six-game winning streak could generate almost nothing against the Seattle Seahawks in a 13-3 loss Saturday night that cost San Francisco a shot at the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. “They played good defense and we didn’t execute,” Purdy said. “All these
other games where we pulled away and had good points and stats and all that stuff is because we execute on the gritty third downs and stay on the field and then we go and score touchdowns after that. So obviously that’s something we needed to do tonight. We didn’t and the scoreboard shows it.” Now, instead of getting a bye, homefield advantage and the chance to play the Super Bowl on their home field without taking another trip, the 49ers (12-5) will have to head on the road next week in the wild-card round after falling flat in their biggest game of the season.

Maduro removal draws fire locally
Rep. Sam Liccardo, D-San Jose, who represents Palo Alto in the House, says President Trump’s decision to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro is unconstitutional. “We can all agree that dictator Nicolas Maduro deserves no sympathy, but recasting petro-motivated military aggression as a battle against narco-terrorism isn’t law enforcement, it’s subverting the law — namely, Article I of our Constitution. Recent history shows how this movie ends, and it’s a horror show,” Liccardo wrote on X. Sen. Adam Schiff, who represents California, said that President Trump should have brought his plans to remove Maduro to Congress. “… (S)tarting a war to remove Maduro doesn’t just continue Donald
Trump’s trampling of the Constitution, it further erodes America’s standing on the world stage and risks our adversaries mirroring this brazen illegal escalation,” Schiff said on X. He said Trump’s real motive wasn’t stopping drugs, but regime change of an oil-rich nation. Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., agreed with his Democratic colleagues. “There’s no clear objective, no endgame, and no plan for what comes next. This is a dangerous recipe for chaos in the region,” Padilla wrote on X. Trump isn’t the only president to use military power without Congressional approval. Barack Obama didn’t have congressional approval when he dropped 25,000 bombs in seven nations in 2016.

Wisconsin Judge Hannah Dugan, who was convicted of obstruction last month for helping an illegal immigrant evade federal officers, has resigned. She said the case against her is too big of a distraction. Federal prosecutors accused Dugan of distracting federal officers trying to arrest an illegal Mexican immigrant outside her courtroom. A federal jury convicted her of felony obstruction. On April 18, immigration officers went to the Milwaukee County courthouse after learning Eduardo FloresRuiz, 31, had re-entered the country illegally and was scheduled to appear before Dugan for a hearing in a battery case. Dugan confronted agents outside her courtroom and directed them to another office. Then she led Flores-Ruiz and his attorney out a private jury door. Agents spotted Flores-Ruiz in the corridor, followed him outside and arrested him after a foot chase. He has since been deported.
