Sentencing delayed for longtime city volunteer BY STEPHANIE LAM Daily Post Correspondent

A longtime Palo Alto volunteer, who admitted to possessing child pornography and trying to meet up with a minor for sex, will be sentenced on March 12. Robert “Bob” Wenzlau, 67, was supposed to be sentenced on Jan. 8, but the date was rescheduled at the request of the prosecutor due to a death in the prosecutor’s family, according to Wenzlau’s attorney WENZLAU Daniel Barton. Mid-Peninsula mayors for 2026 In the past month, most of the cities in the Daily Post’s circulation area have picked new council leaders for 2026. The competition for these jobs is among council members. In three cities, the mayor didn’t change: Belmont, Redwood City and Woodside. Redwood City’s mayor and vice mayor serve for two years. Woodside’s council picked Brian Dombkowski to serve a second term. In Belmont, only the position of vice mayor rotated, as Belmont residents elect their mayor every two years. The role of mayor is to run council meetings and work with the city manager on setting the council’s agenda.

Palo Alto’s Architectural Review Board yesterday thumbed up a massive proposal to build a seven-story housing development near El Camino Real, so long as developers make improvements like adding off-street parking locations and more elevators. Sares Regis Group is responsible for the application on behalf of Palo Alto developer Vittoria Management. The application calls for demolishing existing buildings along 3727-3737 and 3773-3783 El Camino Real, 378-400 Madeline Court and 388 Curtner Avenue to make room for a 183-unit housing development. The area is located near Barron Park neighborhood, which is filled with single-family homes and small businesses. The project is allowed under a California Law called the Builder’s Remedy,

which allows developers to bypass local zoning and general plan rules to build housing, so long as a portion of them are affordable. The units will include a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, with around 23 set aside for low-income households. The space will also include balconies and parking and bike spaces. Recommendations The board’s notes for the application include providing more details about the courtyard section with a proposed spa and landscaping, expanding the third-floor balconies, improving the parking garage screening to neighbors, and adding another elevator to the north-east side of the building. The developer will need to incorporate the comments into their application before eventually sending it to City Council for approval.

Organ donations from the recently deceased dropped last year for the first time in over a decade, resulting in fewer kidney transplants, according to an analysis that pointed to signs of public mistrust in the lifesaving system. More than 100,000 people in the U.S. are on the list for an organ transplant. The vast majority of them need a kidney, and thousands die waiting every year. The nonprofit Kidney Transplant Collaborative analyzed federal data and found 116 fewer kid-

Entertainment Thriller ‘Dead Man’s Wire’ crackles 26

It plays a little loose with facts but the righteous rage of “Dog Day Afternoon” is present enough in Gus Van Sant’s “Dead Man’s Wire,” a basedon-a-true-tale hostage thriller that’s as deeply 1970s as it is contemporary. In February 1977, Tony Kiritsis walked into the Meridian Mortgage Company in downtown Indianapolis and took one of its executives, Dick Hall, hostage. Kiritsis held a sawed-off shotgun to the back of Hall’s head and draped a wire around his neck that connected to the gun. If he moved too much, he would die. The subsequent standoff moved to Kiritsis’ apartment and eventually concluded in a live televised news conference.

Something similar could be said of Tony, who rapidly emerges as a kind of folk hero. As much as he tortures his hostage (a very good Dacre Montgomery), he’s kind to the police officers surrounding him. And as he and Dick spend more time together, Dick emerges as a kind of victim, himself. It’s his father’s bank, and when Tony gets M.L. Hall (Al Pacino) on the phone, he sounds painfully insensitive, sooner ready to sacrifice his son than acknowledge any wrongdoing. It doesn’t take recent similar cases of national fascination, such as Luigi Mangione, charged with killing a healthcare executive, to see contemporary echoes of Kiritsis’ tale. The real story is more complicated and less metaphor-ready, of course, than the movie, which detracts some from the film’s gritty sense of verisimilitude. Staying closer to the truth might have produced a more dynamic movie. But “Dead Man’s Wire” still works. In the film, Tony’s demands are $5 million and an apology. It’s clear the latter means more to him than the money. The tragedy in “Dead Man’s Wire” is just how elusive “I’m sorry” can be. Roman site opens up to virtual tours

One of the best-preserved ancient Roman homes on the Palatine Hill is opening to the public for the first time, albeit via a livestreamed tour of its hard-to-reach underground frescoes and mosaics. The House of the Griffins was first discovered during the excavations in the early 20th century of the Palatine Hill, the verdant hill that rises up from the Roman Forum and dominates views of central Rome today with its striking red brick ruins. Now the general public can virtually visit the House of the Griffins and its newly restored frescoes, including the decoration that gives the home its name: a fresco featuring two griffins. Visitors won’t actually walk through the home’s intimate rooms, which are only accessible via a perilously steep

Kennedy exits as chief of Lucasfilm

After more than 13 years at the helm of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down from the “Star Wars” factory founded by George Lucas. The Walt Disney Co. announced yesterday that it will now turn to Dave Filoni to steer “Star Wars” KENNEDY into its sixth decade and beyond. Filoni, who served as the chief commercial officer of Lucasfilm, and Lynwen Brennan, president and general manager of Lucasfilm’s businesses, will inherit the mantle of one of the movies’ marquee franchises.
