A trial began yesterday for five current and former Stanford students who occupied the university president’s offices during a pro-Palestinian protest in 2024. Authorities initially arrested and charged 12 people after demonstrators barricaded themselves inside the president and provost’s offices for several hours on June 5, 2024, the last day of spring classes at the university.

Local anti-ICE protests scheduled today
Indivisible, the group organizing anti-ICE and anti-Trump demonstrations acrosss the country, says it is planning a protest today from 1 to 3 p.m. at 4180 El Camino Real in Palo Alto over the fatal shooting of a protester in Minnesota. In addition, the group is planning for a candle light vigil from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
at Palo Alto City Hall’s King Plaza, 250 Hamilton Ave. Indivisible said in a statement yesterday that it expects to have 1,000 protests nationally. On Wednesday, 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis as she drove past
immigration agents. The Trump administration claimed the shooting was an act of self-defense as Good drove away, but Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has rejected that claim. On Thursday, two people were shot by Border Patrol agents in Portland during what officials said was “a tar-
geted vehicle stop.” Both were hospitalized. Homeland Security says one of them is a gang member. Some congressional Democrats are threatening another government shutdown to force substantive ICE changes, while Republicans have defended the agency.

Newsom hopes AI helps state budget Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office yesterday forecast a “modest shortfall” of $2.9 billion for the upcoming fiscal year, down sharply from previous estimates in a nearly $349 billion budget proposal that relies heavily on continued windfalls from tech and AI stocks. The governor’s 2026-27 budget proposal projects $9 billion more in revenue than anticipated, banking on the AI-driven economy to last. It’s significantly rosier than the grim outlook by the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office, which in November projected an $18 billion deficit. “A downturn in the market is one of the top risks,” said state Department of Finance Director Joe Stephenshaw. Newsom’s spending proposal is nearly $30 billion more than this year’s budget. It includes $248.3 billion in the general fund, the primary account for state operations, up by $18 billion.
