Bullying case heads to trial BY BRADEN CARTWRIGHT Daily Post Staff Writer
The Palo Alto Unified School District is headed for a trial against a former student who said he was bullied, and school leaders did nothing to help. The case looks back to September 2021, when Joshua Vasquez was a senior and Charles Cicero was a junior at Palo Alto High School. Cicero allegedly created a fake so-

about Cicero’s bullying and harassment, but the district didn’t step in. Vasquez said he suffered “great and severe” physical and emotional pain. Vasquez stopped going to Paly in October 2021. He transferred to Menlo-Atherton High School and obtained a three-year restraining order against
AI frenzy leads to home sales Here’s another place the AI frenzy is making itself felt: the market for luxury homes. High-income earners, many of them employees at AI companies, are snapping up multimillion-dollar houses in the Bay Area, undaunted by the higher mortgage rates and rising home prices that have prevented many would-be buyers from affording a home. The Bay Area buying spree is the clearest manifestation of a nationwide trend of sales of upper-end properties largely holding up better than sales of less expensive homes. Metro areas such as San Diego, Miami, Detroit, Nashville and Tampa, Florida, are also seeing upper-market homes sell at a faster pace. The hotter market for lux-
MINNEAPOLIS SHOOTING: A shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building has left three people dead, including the suspect, and five others wounded. Authorities say those wounded in the gunfire include two Minneapolis police officers, both in stable condition. NEEDLING ARMY ORDERS: A bipartisan group of lawmakers is pressing the U.S. Army to explain why it told a unit based in Europe to stop specializing in drone warfare. The Army’s order comes as battlefields rapidly evolve and military tactics increasingly rely on uncrewed systems to fight. The 173rd Airborne Brigade was building its own drones and practicing the kind of warfare that Ukraine pioneered against Russia. TIGER’S PLEA DEAL: Tiger Woods pleaded no contest to a reckless driving charge in Florida yesterday. Woods was arrested in March following a rollover crash near his home on Jupiter Island and was initially charged with driving under the influence. Man tasered at school Prolific bike A 38-year-old man who was on the Sequoia High School campus during school was arrested yesterday after police tasered him, police said. Adrian Garciaisaula, of Redwood City, was spotted on the campus at 1201 Brewster Ave. at 12:59 p.m., with a metal file in his hand, police said. Officers tried to get Garciaisaula to leave the campus, but he became increasingly agitated and confrontational, police said.
Police used a taser and were able to arrest him, taking him to Maguire Jail. Garciaisaula has multiple felonies and misdemeanors since 2022. Before yesterday’s arrest, he was charged on July 10 for possession of hard drugs and a second strike for a violent felony conviction, according to court records. Garciaisaula is set to appear in court today, he is in jail on no bail status because he was on probation, according to jail records.

A man who police fished out of the Bay off of Cooley Landing in East Palo Alto over the weekend was wanted on five warrants, police said yesterday. Regino Chavez, 41, of East Palo Alto, had warrants for his arrest ranging from possession of an assault weapon, domestic violence, drug possession, and resisting arrest, said East Palo Alto Capt. Paul Kunkel. “He had gotten away from us a few times, and fortunately we were able to safely take him into custody,” Kunkel said. Chavez was arrested for resisting arrest on Satur-
day after the sheriff’s office, Menlo Park Fire District and East Palo Alto police worked together to retrieve Chavez. He hasn’t been in court yet on that charge, but has multiple open cases, according to Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Baum. He is scheduled to be in court on Wednesday and Sept. 24. Other water rescue This is the second watery rescue near Cooley Landing this summer. On July 16, a dog who had gone missing on July 4 was plucked from the Bay by firefighters after someone reported that a dog had jumped into the water.

A man involved in over a dozen bicycle thefts from Caltrain within three months has been arrested, the sheriff’s office said yesterday. Jesus Molina-Barajas, 28, of East Palo Alto, was identified as the suspect in 10 reports of bicycle thefts between May and August 2026, said San Mateo County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Gretchen Spiker. Grabbed the bikes on trains Molina-Barajas would steal the bicycles from inside the trains, Spiker said. Molina-Barajas was previously arrested in September 2025 for bicycle theft. He has been placed in the Maguire Jail on suspicion of multiple counts of grand theft of personal property and petty theft. When he is set to appear in court was not immediately available yesterday.

Entertainment Slasher film ‘Onslaught’ takes its time
16
Daily Post Thursday, September 3, 2026
BY JAKE COYLE
Associated Press Writer
Masked soldiers deployed on domestic soil and an air of conspiratorial paranoia give Adam Wingard’s not-quite-grindhouse siege film “Onslaught” a contemporary pulse, even if this lean, B-movie thriller doesn’t deliver much more than a flicker of its throwback promise. Wingard, though, does seem freshly liberated in this return to his low-budget thriller roots (“You’re Next,” “The Guest”). He has since spent the last decade in more IP-managed releases: the 2016 “Blair Witch” sequel, a Netflix adaptation of “Death Note” and a pair of “Godzilla vs. Kong” movies. Straightforward setup The 92-minute “Onslaught,” written by Wingard and collaborator Simon Barrett, is intentionally straightforward — to the point, you could say, of brainlessness. It’s aiming for a very simple slasher setup in the mold of John Carpenter: A single mom and PTSD-riddled former Army sniper, Celeste (Adria Arjona), living in a desert trailer park, defends herself and her young daughter (Blake Kennedy) from an invasion of three highly programmed super-soldiers who have sprung out of a nearby military contractor facility.
READY FOR BATTLE — Adria Arjona in “Onslaught.” A24 via AP.
Even though “Onslaught” begins with a clock that’s already ticking below 12 hours, the movie takes its time leading to a bloody finale that isn’t quite worth the drumbeat. But Wingard is in no great hurry, and he lingers in the anticipation, for both better and worse. So early on we get Dan Stevens (deliberately hammy) as a suspiciously old, white-haired Nazi scientist crawling across the room to lick the stiletto-heeled foot of his wife and co-conspirator (a queenly Rebecca Hall, suggesting great depth in her few minutes on screen). From the bodies of dead soldiers, Stevens’ mad scientist has engineered three elite killing ma-
chines. They are devoid of personality, with beady lights for eyes. Still, he’s given them nicknames: the Butcher (Alex Pereira), the Cockroach (Dave Campbell) and the Crybaby (Tyler Hall). They get out, of course, and begin causing trouble. Cleanup expert “Onslaught” likewise lingers on the quickly dispatched operative, Cyrus (Drew Starkey), sent to clean up the ensuing mess. Wingard delights in introducing the character, who’s more drugged up and charmingly laid-back than your usual cleanup expert. It’s a lot of set up for a guy who, ultimately, doesn’t do much.
But what’s the rush? Wingard also takes his time surveying the female bodies at the S&M club Cyrus is attending when we meet him, just as he does looking over some of the bloody wreckage left by the super-soldiers. The soldiers start unleashing mayhem across a Western plain that looks like it could either be where Wile E. Coyote chases the Roadrunner or the setting of Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland.” “Onslaught” has a bit of both. The movie is best in its leisurely depiction of life at the Windy Oasis, the trailer-park remove where Celeste has found some rough-hewn sense of peace — away from society and with plenty of room for target practice. Reginald VelJohnson and Eric Wareheim gamely play Celeste’s neighbors, adding to the eccentric ensemble. But “Onslaught” is most of all a chance for Arjona to show some leading-woman grit. And she does that in Wingard’s quirkily contradictory movie: gleefully violent despite its military satire, curiously unhurried despite its title. Release info “Onslaught,” an A24 release in theaters tomorrow, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for strong bloody violence, some gore, sexual material/nudity, and language. Running time: 107 minutes.

Former Assistant Principal Jerry Berkson met with Cicero and had him acknowledge that he spread rumors, close the social media account and apologize to Vasquez and his mother in a letter, Davis said. Vasquez’s mental health issues predate Cicero’s bullying, as he had been receiving therapy since at least 2016 for anxiety, depression and conflicts with his parents, Davis said. “Even if (Vasquez) could establish liability, it is unlikely he could prove significant damages that were related to alleged bullying that took place for less than two months approximately five years ago,” Davis said, pointing out that Vasquez doesn’t have a job.
Previous lawsuit Vasquez and his mother previously sued the district in July 2017 for alleged bullying at two elementary schools and three middle schools in Palo Alto. The district agreed to pay $50,000 for Vasquez to drop his case in August 2020. After payments for attorney fees and medical bills, he ended up getting a $34,683 check. Vasquez’s attorney Dylan Hackett will meet with Davis to discuss a settlement for the Paly case on Wednesday. A trial is scheduled to start on Sept. 14. The trial is expected to last five to six days if it’s with a jury and two days if it’s with a judge, Davis said.
A driver was injured yesterday after their car and a Caltrain collided at Broadway in Burlingame. The driver was taken to the hospital after the crash at 5:25 p.m., which snarled train service during the evening commute.
Fatal crash on Monday On Monday, a man was struck by a train in San Bruno, resulting in at least the tenth fatality on the tracks this year. Jeffrey Hay Shurtleff, 81, of San Bruno, was RV dwellers around. He said the city needs to find a parking lot where they can safely park, like at Moffett Field in Mountain View. “So we can transition these RVs off the street and into a place where they’re not bothering us, and we’re not bothering them,” Reckdahl said.
Lowering the density Reckdahl’s idea came up when council considered a proposal to limit RVs to one side of streets where they’re most concentrated in south Palo Alto. The proposal was intended to lower the density of RV dwellers, Councilwoman Julie Lythcott-Haims said. “Unless you’re abjectly prejudiced against these people, you don’t mind if there’s one or two on your street,” she said at the Aug. 24 meeting. But residents and business owners were overbusinesses — half the businesses in an area sign the petition,” Reckdahl said. “So now the parking in that whelmingly against the proposal, arguing that it area would be there to serve the businesses, not to would cement an unsafe situation. “Since you are apparently committed to long-term serve the RVs. And that would be one way to relatively quickly mitigate those parking impacts that the oversized vehicle parking on our residential streets, I would like to offer a constructive counter-proposRVs are having.” But Reckdahl said the permits wouldn’t be a long al: Invite them into your own damn neighborhoods,” term solution, because the city would just be shuffling Ventura resident Barry Katz said at the meeting.
PERMITS –––––
struck just after 1 p.m. on Monday, the San Mateo County Coroner’s office said yesterday. Caltrain has stopped announcing deaths on the tracks in an effort to prevent copycat suicides. Caltrain recorded nine people have died on the tracks through July 10, the most recent date with data available from the agency. Help is available. If you or someone you know is having a mental health crisis, call or text the 24/7 suicide and crisis lifeline at 988.
Banned near businesses? Council agreed that RVs should be banned anywhere with homes, regardless of the zoning designation. But for businesses, council only voted to paint red curbs by driveways. The city is planning to permit RVs on two roads at the edges of Palo Alto starting in January, but the roads can fit less than half of the city’s 130 RVs. Chamber of Commerce CEO Charlie Weidanz said RV dwellers are creating blind spots, taking away customer parking, stealing utilities and littering. “Palo Alto’s small businesses cannot continue to operate under these conditions,” he told council. Accidents have happened Michael Emrick, retired CFO of Mozart Development at 1068 Meadow Circle, said drivers have been in accidents because RVs block visibility from his company’s parking lot. Darci Teobaldi, VP and general counsel for Recor Medical at 1049 Elwell Court, said her company may have no choice but to look for another location in the Bay Area. “We are running out of options on how to access our buildings,” she said in an email to council.

tial public offerings. Neither has yet decided on the timing. An analysis by Redfin that looked at how much employees at both companies stand to gain potentially from the companies going public estimated that the combined IPO earnings would be enough to buy nearly one-third of all homes in San Francisco. Just the possibility of these two blockbuster IPOs is building pressure on some home shoppers in the Bay Area to buy sooner, rather than later. They worry they‘ll face a flood of newly minted millionaires ready to pounce, further ratcheting up competition in the San Francisco housing market. The time to strike Julio Bermudez, an AI data infrastructure company executive in the Bay Area, had been looking to buy his first home for about a year, but his search took on new urgency. “So, you start taking a look at that and you take a look at your own position — both from just a diversification standpoint, as well as the fact that we’ re trying to set roots here, kids are in school, all that good stuff,” said Bermudez, 41. “And it’s like we don’t want to be priced out, so we need to buy now.” Recently, Bermudez entered into a contract to buy a five-bedroom, four-bath house in Orinda, about 17 miles northeast of San Francisco. The seller was asking $3.5 million, but agreed to sell for $3.3 million. “I felt like this was sort of an interesting time and location to try to strike before it really does get crazy,” he said.
