MEAT RECALL: More than 83 tons of meat are being recalled across the country because the products were not properly inspected by federal authorities and were shipped out with false inspection stickers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday that the nationwide recall impacts more than 167,000 pounds of raw pork, beef, and goat produced by Star Meat Delivery Inc. of North Carolina. BIGGEST LIE: Allegations of Israeli genocide in Gaza are not only false but “the biggest lie of the century” — so says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He told that to world leaders in a defiant speech that asserted his nation’s right to wage war against Iran. Netanyahu also accused Mayor Zohran Mamdani of endangering Jewish New Yorkers with his criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Netanyahu said the New York City mayor has spread lies about Israel.
THE ROCKS in the fountain at Lytton Plaza will be replaced with a metal grate. Post photo by Braden Cartwright.
Palo Alto’s Parks and Recreation Commission is questioning the city’s decision to remove river rocks from the fountain at Lytton Plaza, where kids like to play. The rocks will be replaced with a metal grate, said Sarah Robustelli, Palo Alto’s division manager for community services. Robustelli said people have thrown rocks and caused damage. “It all comes back to a safety concern,” she told the Parks and Recreation Commission on Tuesday. Commissioner Shani Kleinhaus said the city is replacing an area that’s fun for kids to play on with a flat, non-functional surface. She asked if the [See ROCK, page 38]

THE UPDATE FROM PAGE 1
seized following a November 2025 special election that favored Democrats. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, who was running for governor at the time, claimed he confiscated the ballots after a local group complained about the vote count. Local officials said the complaint was unfounded. Bianco said he will comply with the ruling. HOLMES TO HALFWAY HOUSE: Elizabeth Holmes, the one-time rising star in Silicon Valley with her blood test startup Theranos, has been approved to be placed in a halfway house in Austin on Aug. 23, 2027. Holmes was initially sentenced in 2022 to 11 years in prison for defrauding investors. JUICE’S FINE: The NFL fined 49ers All-Pro fullback Kyle Juszczyk for what it deemed an “offensive” celebration similar to one he had been doing for several years with no issues. Juszczyk was fined $14,926 after he imitated drinking a beverage following a catch in the third quarter of San Francisco’s win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Juszczyk’s nickname is “Juice” and he has been doing a version of that celebration throughout his career. But the league told him the celebration was an imitation of drinking a beer and was worthy of a fine. MAN SHOT AT RALLY DIES: James Copenhaver, one of three campaign rally attendees shot in 2024 during an assassination attempt on thencandidate Donald Trump, has died. Copenhaver was 76. Copenhaver was struck in the arm and in the abdomen, wounds that left him with lingering injuries and walking with a cane.
Plan Well. Move Smart.
TOO LATE: The nation’s cybersecurity agency yesterday released an election infrastructure security plan 40 days before the November elections. The plan outlines potential threats and offers services to election officials. But election officials say the plan is inadequate and late, after the administration gutted the agency’s election security work last year. Palo Alto Daily Post and padailypost.com

Palo Alto City Council candidate Yudy Deng has raised $166,128 — smashing city records and nearly doubling the total of her closest opponent. Deng is relying more on out-of-town donations than the rest of the field. She’s had 41 of 135 donations come from Palo Alto, according to her latest fundraising report. Rest of the pack Planning Commissioner Bryna Chang is in second with $85,118 raised through Sept. 19. She’s collected 107 of 139 donations from Palo Alto residents, her report shows. Councilman Ed Lauing is in third with $36,122. He’s collected 64 of 67 donations from Palo Alto. Democratic Socialist candidate Raymond Goins has raised $1,200. Gary Gechlik reported no fundraising, and the city did not publish
reports from Mayor Vicki Veenker or software engineer Brian Hamachek yesterday. Three seats are up for grabs, with ballots going out on Oct. 5. Deng has far surpassed past fundraising leaders. Councilman George Lu raised $49,958 at this point in the last election, and Lythcott-Haims raised $69,561 in 2022. Deng is endorsed by Lu and Lythcott-Haims. Deng said she asked for donations from friends from college, the nonprofit sector and her old home in Bellevue, Wash. She said most of her friends are tech engineers, attorneys or people she knows from nonprofit work. “Nothing suspicious,” she said in an interview on Sept. 9. Deng is on the Parks and Recreation Commmission and chief development officer for the Society for Heart’s Delight, a nonprofit focused on engaging Chinese immigrants in the South Bay.

Wang pushing for change at district
levels of math in three years. But that’s been discouraging for struggling students and demotivating for advanced students, and the district has ignored testing results, he said. “It was for the sake of optics,” he said. Wang said he wants to have an honest conversation about recent suicides of transgender students. He criticized administrators for their proposal to reassign Paly theater teacher Sarah Thurmond, who offered a safe haven to vulnerable students, right in the middle of the suicide crisis. Wang said there’s a rampant “culture of bullying” in the district. “It goes from student to student, and even from administration to students and staff, and students bullying staff. And I don’t think the district has been responsive enough to that,” Wang said. Wang criticized the district for spending $563,414 on a math skip test and $56,599 on two sushi machines. He wants to hire an independent auditor, cut down on no-bid contracts and stop fighting unnecessary legal battles. “I’m convinced there’s a lot of waste. I’m trying to do some research … I need to understand exactly what’s going on before I come in guns blazing,” Wang said.

Candidate Avery Wang’s issues with the Palo Alto Unified School District started with math, but he said he’s running to address a broader culture of bullying, unnecessary spending and a lack of transparency. “Students are not being heard,” he said in an inWANG terview. Wang sued the district in June 2020 for allegedly holding his son back and violating the 2015 Math Placement Act, which requires districts to have fair and transparent placement policies. “PAUSD must stop trying to act as parents and stick to their job as educators,” Wang said in his lawsuit. The district agreed to move Wang’s son into a more advanced class and pay him $5,000 to drop his case. Wang advised another group of parents who sued the district with similar claims in July 2021. Judge Carrie Zepeda ordered the district to update its testing policies, publish more data and pay $38,311 in attorney fees. SAVE $25 Swedish Health Massage Cancer test clears hurdle $65 Friday, September 25, 2026 Daily Post
Federal health advisers have endorsed a blood test designed to spot signs of various cancers in apparently healthy people while warning that it’s far from clear how well the technology works. Grail Inc.’s Galleri test doesn’t diagnose cancer but instead, with a single blood draw, looks for a signal that someone may have one of a long list of tumors. Those who receive a positive result need additional care to tell if they’re really sick. The Food and Drug Administration’s advisory panel voted 7-2 on
Wednesday, with one abstention, that the DNA-based test offers more potential benefits than risks, such as causing false assurances or raising false alarms. The positive vote came even as the panel raised many questions about the technology that need more study. “Perhaps my yes is a hopeful rather than an accurate one,” said Dr. Victor van Berkel of UofL Physicians in Louisville, Kentucky, describing how more research is needed even if the test is rolled out. “If we can find more early-stage cancers in the pop-
ulation that we can’t screen for currently, that will end up having benefit.”
Next steps Lots of companies are studying such blood tests and Wednesday’s vote marks the first time a federal advisory group has backed the experimental approach. The FDA isn’t bound by the advice but if it agrees, it could pave the way for widespread U.S. adoption of a long-sought way to find more cancers earlier. A final decision is expected in a few months.

Health Deaths spur look at kratom’s risks
A drug task force in Mississippi is urging people to avoid kratom after authorities found packages of the substance while investigating the deaths of two University of Mississippi students. The warning came despite no “confirmed information” that kratom contributed to either death, Lafayette County Metro Narcotics said in a news release. The students were found Monday afternoon in different locations, one on campus and the other off campus, a university spokesperson said. The university yesterday identified the students as Aidan Hamilton, a freshman from Englewood, Colo., and Robert Strang, a junior from Atlanta. The school said in a statement that their families “have asked for privacy as they grieve.”
substance and federal authorities have issued warnings about its risks. Two state agencies were working to expedite toxicology reports for the students, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said in a statement Wednesday. “Mississippi is praying for the families and friends of the two Ole Miss students during this incredibly difficult time,“ Reeves said. Authorities said they had no evidence the deaths were connected but noted the kratom found at the scenes was sold at a retail store.

‘Forgotten Island’ a wild tale of friends BY MARK KENNEDY Associated Press Writer
Of all the magical portals that transport you to another world, “Forgotten Island” may have the cutest. It’s not a brick tunnel like “Spirited Away” or a hidden door like “Coraline” or even C.S. Lewis’ famous wardrobe. In this movie, it’s a sand dollar. That humble beach staple is the key to unlocking what surely is the richest, busiest and trippiest animated movie of the year, one that leans into Filipino BESTIES — Jo, voice by H.E.R., left, and Raissa, voiced by Liza Soberano, in folklore to tell a story about friendship. “Forgotten Island.” Universal Pictures via AP. Then they have to find a way back home. “Forgotten Island” is sort of a mess, in the best way. There are jokes about Tom Cruise, Will Smith’s Oscar slap and, weirdly, footage of Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Predator.” It incorporates the Tagalog language, energy drinks and flaming Cheetos, Post-its, a score with indigenous Filipino instruments, boisterous karaoke as well as Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” and INXS’ “Never Tear Us Apart” — twice! It can be a lot. The final third of the movie is Jo and Raissa struggling to recapture their memories, including the ones they’ve built together. “Forgotten Island” is a movie about forgetting as much as it is about remembering and you’ll likely walk out wanting to text your bestie, ASAP. Do it. Let a sand dollar reconnect you.
Release info “Forgotten Island,” a DreamWorks Animation release that’s in theaters today, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association for “animated sequences of scary action, language, rude humor, thematic elements, some violence and brief tobacco imagery.” Running time: 95 minutes.

The New World October 3 & 4, 2026 at the California Theatre Celebrate 250 years of the American spirit with music that reflects the nation’s past, present, and promise. Aaron Copland’s Billy the Kid has become synonymous with the American West. Drawing on folk tunes, wide-open harmonies, and cinematic energy, Copland captures the myth, optimism, and rugged individualism that helped shape the American imagination. Pianist Joyce Yang, known for her brilliance, depth, and expressive power, delivers the Bay-area premiere of Jonathan Leshnoff’s Rhapsody on America—a lyrical meditation on the American spirit that weaves together sweeping virtuosity, intimate reflection, and propulsive rhythmic energy. Antonín Dvořák’s greatest work, his New World Symphony, was composed during his time in the United States. Inspired by American landscapes and musical traditions, this symphony remains a profound reflection of cultural identity, hope, and discovery—ideas at the very core of the American experiment. A former Stanford employee who lied about being raped on campus twice will get mental health treatment instead of going to jail. The accusations by Jennifer Ann Gries, 28, of Santa Clara, caused fear throughout Stanford in fall 2022. Police sent out campus-wide warnings, and more than 200 students marched to say the university was protecting rapists. Gries described her assailant as a Black man in his 20s, matching the features of a coworker. “This is a rare and deeply destructive crime,” Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in March 2022, when Gries was arrested for felony perjury. Rosen’s office agreed to give Gries a mental health diversion, which allows her to get two years of therapy and medication rather than a criminal sentence. The diversion was approved on Tuesday. Rosen’s spokesman Cynthia Sumida declined to answer questions Wednesday about why prosecutors supported the diversion request, which was filed confidentially.
out a campus-wide alert that night describing the allegations. Gries then told a nurse at Stanford Hospital that a Black man took her into a storage closet and raped her on Oct. 7, 2023. Again, she took a forensic exam and applied for victim benefits, and Stanford sent out an alert. The alerts, which are required by law when there may be an ongoing threat, didn’t say that the same woman had made both reports. The forensic exams were expedited because of the extreme risk of a serial sex offender, but the lab detected no male DNA, Woodland said.
Investigation of claims A police investigation revealed that Gries had made a sexual harassment complaint in March 2022 against a coworker who matched the description of her alleged rapist, Woodland said. Stanford HR found the allegation was unsubstantiated and reassigned Gries to a different job, Woodland said. Gries also told a friend that she was dating her coworker and pregnant with his twins, but medical records showed she was never pregnant, Woodland said. Gries told her friend that she wanted to make her coworker’s life “a living hell,” Woodland said. “I’m coming up with a plan,” Gries First and second complaints Gries, who worked for Stanford’s said in a text, according to Woodland. Gries admitted to lying about the housing services, first complained to nurses at the Valley Medical Center rapes in a recorded interview on Jan. in San Jose on Aug. 9, 2022. She said 24, 2023. She wrote an apology letter she was raped in a bathroom by Wilbur and said she was upset because the man Field while she was walking to her car, had “false intentions” and turned her DA investigator Sheena Woodland said friends against her, Woodland said. tion would go to education. Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West, the primary proponent and financial backer of the measure, says the tax would raise about $100 billion and is needed to backfill federal healthcare cuts passed last year. Conservatives argue California’s Medi-Cal program has grown too expensive, and new federal policies will help the state cut back. Prop. 41’s real target is Prop. 40: It would require new tax proposals passed after the start of this year to follow the state’s annual spending limit — a cap passed by voters in 1979 during a period of strong anti-tax sentiment that recent voter-approved special taxes have exempted themselves from. The billionaire tax would automatically violate this provision because it isn’t written to comply with the state spending limit. Prop 41 would also require the nonpartisan state auditor to review new tax proposals before they reach voters and identify potential spending cuts in the programs they’d fund. If voters approve a tax, some of the revenue generated would pay for the audit; if a proposal fails, the state would be on the hook for the additional cost. Prop. 42 would bar new taxes on personal property such as businesses, investments, retirement accounts, trusts and art collections — the exact things that Prop. 40 targets. It would also prohibit retroactive taxes, sare, polling director for PPIC. Only one outcome which would block a key part of Prop. 40: taxing Where’s the ping pong? NEWS measure, mostly from union coffers. The California Democratic Party also supports the measure. Gov. Gavin Newsom, along with doctors’ groups and clinics, opposes Prop. 40. Newsom argues the tax would not create a long-term solution to California’s budget woes and will drive wealthy people and businesses the state relies on through income taxes out of the state, further reducing revenue. Sergey Brin, the Google co-founder, and other billionaires are bankrolling the opposition campaign, ploughing more than $56 million into the No on Prop. 40 committee through a political organization called Building a Better California. That same group is the primary financial backer for both Propositions 41 and 42, raising $131 million to campaign for those measures. In total, the billionaire-backed group has gathered more than $187 million to try to defeat Prop. 40. Baldassare said the billionaire tax’s backers will have a difficult time overcoming voter confusion about the three competing measures.

Tabron said she worked with Choe for seven years and saw a pattern of her funding programs based on personal favoritism and withholding money from teachers she didn’t like. Choe had canceled all her meetings with Tabron and stopped assigning her work by spring 2023. TABRON

Tabron said she asked her union representative for help, but he told her to “go to the press” and stopped responding to her calls and messages. Tabron received a layoff notice with the option of taking a program assistant position on March 1, 2023. Tabron made $112,754 plus benefits in 2023. District’s other lawsuits The district is in the middle of more than a dozen lawsuits in federal court and Santa Clara County Superior Court. Former Assistant to the Superintendent Victoria Maya has also alleged bullying by district leadership. She said former Deputy Superintendent Trent Bahadursingh called her “the ‘P’ word” for taking medical leave in February 2023. Executive Assistant to the Board Vicky Lao also screamed and cursed at Maya, the suit said. In another lawsuit, Custodial Supervisor Wei Kung said she was fired in June 2025 for complaining to Chief Business Officer Charen Yu about the maintenance director possibly taking bribes from vendors. Diana Fox, an African American teacher’s aide at Gunn High School, sued the district for allegedly firing her after she reported racist text messages from a coworker in December 2024. Fox said she received four racist texts calling her the n-word and referencing her skin color. “They hate you here at Gunn, hoping you’ll quit. Just do yourself a favor and don’t return,” one text allegedly said. Fox said she reported the texts to her staffing agency and was fired by the district the next day.
