THE ISSUE — A parent who supports Linda Henigin’s competitor says Henigin is not a math teacher.

A Palo Alto school board candidate has been accused of lying about her credentials on the ballot. Classroom aide Linda Henigin isn’t qualified to teach math as a standalone subject, yet she listed herself as a math teacher on the ballot, parent Virginia Noh said in a lawsuit filed on HENIGIN Tuesday. “It gives her a level of credibility that’s unwarranted,” Noh said in an interview yesterday. Noh said Henigin has a “multiple subject” teaching credential, which allows her to teach all subjects to the same [See LYING, page 18]

Lee Street renamed after Tubman BY BRADEN CARTWRIGHT Daily Post Staff Writer

Los Altos City Council has voted to rename Lee Street to Tubman Street at the request of neighbors who don’t want the city to honor Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s fight to keep slavery.

“Every day, as we walk past Lee Street, we are reminded of him and the despicable ideals he fought for,” eight neighbors said in a petition to change the name. Resident Eric Albert, who lives at the corner of University Avenue and Lee Street, said the name made him

Residents urge town to ditch cameras BY NORAH SHEPPARD-HUTCHINS Daily Post Staff Writer

Menlo Park’s contract with Flock Safety ends on Nov. 1, and residents are urging council not to renew the contract out of concern for the community’s safety. “Using these cameras, capturing everyone’s motions constantly is putting everyone under suspicion,” Tim MacKenzie said. “It is saying that from the city, ‘we do not trust you.’ So how can trust be reciprocated when it is not extended to us?” MacKenzie, of Mountain View, was one of six people who spoke at the Tuesday Menlo Park City Council meeting against a Flock contract renewal. Council was not set to vote on the contract, so no action was taken on Tuesday. Sara Matlin warned council that federal agencies such as ICE could be using Flock data. “Across the

Curry gained fame as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” an iconic role that became a cultural touchstone. He CURRY also played the smug concierge in “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.” His longtime friend and manager Marcia Hurwitz says he died Tuesday night at his home in Los Angeles. The Army expects that more than 20 nuclear microreactors will be built and operated. DEADLY FLASH FLOODS: Flash floods in a border area of Nepal and China yesterday have killed at least 160 people and left hundreds missing. After 80 years in Menlo Park, SRI, one of the city’s top employers, is moving to Palo Alto, where it’s already upset with city officials. SRI sent a list of complaints regarding a proposed plan permitting RV parking in front of its new headquarters to Palo Alto Mayor Vicki Veenker and City Council over the weekend. “As we plan this transition, safety and security are a top priority for employees and visitors. The Coyote Hill entrance/exit has limited visibility, and oversized vehicle parking nearby would create a safety hazard for vehicles and cyclists,” Steve Perna, president of integrated systems and solutions, said in the letter. This comes after SRI’s CEO David Parekh announced in an Aug. 3 statement that the headquarters will be relocating to its Palo Alto Research Center campus, located at 3333 Coyote Hill Road in Stanford Research Park. The relocation of SRI’s headquarters away from Menlo Park also means the

city will lose one of its biggest employers. SRI was the third top employer in Menlo Park for 2024-2025, with 582 people working there, making up 2% of the city’s total employment. Just above SRI is Snowflake with 1,452 employees and Meta with 15,110, according to a city report. Former Mayor Steve Schmidt said he’s unsure if this move will be good or bad for Menlo Park, however it will provide an opportunity to build more housing on the site.

Campus redevelopment In 2025, council approved for developer Lane Partners to redevelop the SRI campus at 333 Ravenswood Ave., initially proposing to build 646 homes and up to one million square feet of commercial space. In June, the developers submitted a modified proposal to build 1,082 homes. It was initially planned for Lane Partners to retain three existing buildings for SRI to continue its operation in Menlo Park.

She said the street may have been named after Leland “Lee” Smith, a Black chauffeur and handyman who lived a couple blocks away for many years. “He busied himself with helping others around town and in doing so, became popular as the town’s unofficial mayor,” Carpenter said, reading from a book about early Los Altos. Carpenter said she would agree with the name change if the street is named after the general, but she doesn’t want to erase the history of a prominent citizen. Vice Mayor Larry Lang said Lee Street first appeared on a map in 1906, and Smith moved into his house in 1911. “Then maybe I’m wrong,” Carpenter said. 99.9% sure Liza Coe, who is writing a book about the city’s street names, said she is 99.9% sure that Lee Street is named after Robert E. Lee. From the 1880s to World War 1, the United States had a “culture of reunion” that celebrated military courLEE age on both sides of the Civil War. “Lee in particular became very much an American cultural icon, even though we may shudder at that thought nowadays,” Coe told council. Two members of the Altos Land Company that subdivided the area were very involved in the Civil War and had family members on both sides, Coe said. Lee Street is a block away from Sherman Street and Sheridan Street, named after Union generals. What street signs are for Resident Brian Jones called Lee Street “an old relic of hate and oppression — a stain of America’s original sin.” Councilman Pete Dailey said history is preserved in books and museums. “It’s not preserved on street signs. Street signs are for veneration,” he said. “Lee is not to be venerated.”

nor TikTok responded to requests for comments. Meta officials declined to comment on whether they had conversations with their competitors about those conditions, but said they intentionally designed the agreement with the states to incentivize the rest of the industry to follow suit. Some of the safety measures Meta will implement, like disabling cosmetic surgery and extreme makeup filters, made sense regardless of whether competing platforms do the same, Meta said. Other features, like the overnight block, will function better if they are established across the board, the company said. If industry peers sign on to the agreement, Meta will implement stronger defaults for teens’ daily time limit and the length of time for “night mode.” Lawsuit followed investigation The federal lawsuit was the result of an investigation led by a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general from California, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Jersey, Tennessee and Vermont. It followed newspaper reports, first by The Wall Street Journal in 2021, that found the company knew about the harm Instagram can cause teenagers, especially teen girls, when it comes to mental health and body image issues. Meta has since added a host of safety features to Instagram, including separate accounts for teenagers with stronger protections around messaging and privacy, along with content restrictions. But child-safety advocates and experts, along with some former Meta employees, have long contended that the features are little more than window dressing. Arturo Bejar, a former Meta engineering director who testified last week in the Oakland trial, called the settlement a “significant milestone” but warned that it should not be interpreted as an “all clear” sign that Instagram is now safe for children. “The agreement has a big problem in that it allows Meta to define harm,” Bejar said in an interview. He urged the court to address that “because it’s one thing to say, ‘Yeah, you only get like two hours of alcohol or two hours of cigarettes a day,’ but it’s still as bad for you because of what’s getting delivered.”
