City releases video of kerfuffle Of candidate’s last minute ballot attempt

LEAVING TOWN: New York City has surpassed the Bay Area as the largest hub of tech talent in the country. New York had 394,300 tech workers in 2025 – an increase of 30,640 jobs, or 8.4%, compared to three years ago, research by the real estate firm CBRE shows. Meanwhile, the Bay Area had 375,730 workers last year – a decrease of 23,900 jobs, or 6%. ACTBLUE PROBED: Three Republican-led House committees and the Justice Department are investigating whether ActBlue, the fundraising platform for many Democrats, illegally accepted foreign donations. Co-founder Matt DeBergalis invoked his Fifth Amendment right against selfincrimination when he appeared at a Congressional hearing.

NICK SHIRLEY: The legislature has passed a bill dubbed by critics as the “Stop Nick Shirley Act” and sent it to Gov. Gavin Newsom. Proponents say it will provide privacy for workers at nonprofits that get government money to help undocumented immigrants, but critics say it will stop the media from investigating nonprofits that may be involved in fraud. vealed that they had moved from another home in Atherton to the one on Selby Lane. It’s unclear if the Currys are still Atherton residents, but they have made news during their tenure. In January [See CURRYS, page 22]

The city of Los Altos released a video yesterday that shows a potential candidate’s last minute attempt to get on the ballot for council. Roger Heyder and five supporters were trying to complete the required forms before a deadline at 5 p.m. on Aug. 7. “I need them, I need them, I need them, I need them,” City Clerk Melissa Thurman said as the seconds ticked down. City Manager Gabriel Engeland said Thurman was visibly shaking following the exchange. “She felt increasingly intimidated, pressured and threatened by the conduct [See VIDEO, page 22]

THE UPDATE NEWSFROM PAGE 1

Shirley is the YouTuber who exposed the “Quality Learing (sic) Center” in Minneapolis, leading to an investigation into welfare fraud.

FOOT-WASHING STATIONS: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has launched an investigation into why the Houston airport added a foot-washing station for Muslim men and why the Dallas-Fort Worth airport was planning to add one. BALLROOM GO-AHEAD: The Supreme Court has temporarily allowed construction to proceed on President Trump’s controversial White House ballroom. The order gives the justices additional time to weigh the legality of replacing the former East Wing. OVERSEER ACCUSED: San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie is calling on the Board of Supervisors to remove William Monroe Palmer from the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department Oversight Board because he’s been accused of giving drugs to a vulnerable woman and having sex with her while she was confined to his apartment for five days, the Chronicle reports.

GUIDES FINED: Cal/OSHA has fined Blackbird Mountain Guides $150,000 following February’s catastrophic avalanche on Castle Peak on Donner Summit in California’s Sierra Nevada that killed nine people. Investigators cited safety violations tied to the backcountry skiing disaster. BEEF QUOTAS: The Trump administration moved to temporarily ease ground beef import quotas for 90 days. Officials hope the measure lowers prices, though cattle producers warn it could reduce the money they were expecting to have to rebuild their herds.

NEEDED GAS: A high-speed Los Angeles burglary pursuit concluded when the suspect crashed directly into a CHP cruiser. The driver had bizarrely stopped for gas before finishing the run with a violent collision. ALASKA CRASH: Investigators are probing a charter plane crash near a remote military radar site in western Alaska. Officials confirmed that all eight people aboard were killed.

Cases go back 30 years Hodes touched girls going back more than 30 years, but not all of the cases were charged because of the statute of limitations, King said in a motion. “He was caught in 1992, but briefly complied with school mandates that he tutor only in the open and across the table from his students,” King said. “He was also caught in 1997 and was excluded from school campuses. He continued to offend from his home.” Judge Brian Buckelew agreed to release Hodes because he has cancer on Aug. 16, 2023. Hodes was required to point a camera at his door that records everyone who comes and goes, and he couldn’t delete his internet history or talk to minors without supervision. Castilleja lawsuit Three former students sued Castilleja in January 2025 for allegedly allowing Hodes to molest them, even though his inappropriate behavior was known on campus for decades. Students gave Hodes nicknames like “Horny Hodes” and “Molesting Mark,” the suit said. Yet Castilleja employees continued to recommend Hodes as a tutor and gave him free access to a private classroom in the basement of the all-girls school at 1310 Bryant St., the suit said. The former students, now in their 20s and 30s, said they wanted to make an example of Castilleja and show other schools that they need to protect children. Castilleja agreed to settle the lawsuit for $2.3 million in March. “The trauma these women carry was entirely preventable had the school prioritized student safety over its institutional reputation,” attorney Mary Alexander said at the time. Victims will have chance to read statements about the impact of the abuse at an Oct. 1 sentencing hearing.
