A Mountain View company trying to build the world’s first self-driving air taxi has ignored safety in its race to develop the new technology, according to a lawsuit by an engineer who said she was fired for raising safety concerns.

Wisk Aero is adopting the pathology of its parent company Boeing: “emphasizing deadlines over safety, discouraging paper trails, and sidelining safety personnel,” engineer Briahna O’Neill said in her lawsuit filed on June 29.

O’Neill said she filed a safety report on March 19, 2025, about Wisk’s management demanding engineers reduce testing on flight-critical software, in violation of the Federal Aviation Administration’s standards.

City eyes demolishing dilapidated building Los Altos residents are trying to stop the city from demolishing a historic building that is falling apart in the Redwood Grove Nature Preserve.

“What’s the purpose of historic designation if you can just circumvent it?” resident Claudia Cilker asked council.

Residents have until July 27 to give feedback on the draft report.

“I look forward to the completed report and the other material we’ll have to review before any decisions are made,” Vice Mayor Larry Lang said.

Commissioner to seek council seat

A Parks and Recreation Commissioner is running to represent east Menlo Park on city council.

Wonman Lee, 44, who has been a commissioner for three years, is the first to throw their hat in the ring in the race to replace Cecilia Taylor, who anLEE nounced last week that she will not be seeking a third term to represent the Belle Haven neighborhood.

Lee has not officially announced a run, but filed paperwork on June 22 that allows him to begin fundraising for the race, according to documents filed with the City Clerk’s office.

Candidates can formally file for office next week.

Other seats up for grabs While Lee so far is not facing any competition for the Belle Haven seat, there are competitive races for the other two seats up for election in Menlo Park.

College district to pay $160K in suit

Pension reduction CalPERS initially asked McCoy to resign and pay back $930,066, but they settled for $225,000 on April 17, 2025.

The settlement permanently reduced McCoy’s pension from $11,806 to $10,574 per month, his lawsuit said.

McCoy sued the college district on Sept. 3 for the difference, plus interest and attorney fees.

“Had Chief Levine not promised to file the necessary exemption paperwork, (McCoy) would not have accepted the position,” his lawsuit said.

The Foothill-DeAnza Community College District has settled a lawsuit with a retired police sergeant who said he was falsely assured that he could keep working while getting his pension.

The college district agreed to pay Sgt. Jeffrey McCoy $160,000 to drop his case on June 1, court records show.

McCoy retired from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office in February 2018 after a 32-year career patrolling Saratoga, Cupertino and Los Altos Hills. He was hired by the college district 10 days later as an emergency manager and patrol sergeant.

Former Chief Ron Levine allegedly assured McCoy that HR would send paperwork to the California Public Employees’ Retirement System to exempt

him from a required 180-day waiting period between retiring and starting a new job.

But CalPERS never received the paperwork and alleged that he was illegally employed for six years.

Intruder found in home $

A woman has been arrested after a Palo Alto resident found her standing in their kitchen, police said yesterday.

The resident went into her kitchen to find Funda Yilmaz, 54, of Georgia, standing there, police said. Yilmaz had gotten into the home through an unlocked rear door, police said.

The resident didn’t recognize

on Monday, but that afternoon, someone called police to report that someone was trying to get into cars parked along the 1800 block of Middlefield Road.

Child drownings on rise, experts warn

Doctors and others are sounding an alarm: More U.S. children have been drowning in recent years.

“When drowning occurs, seconds matter,” said Dr. Rohit Shenoi, the lead author of a recent American Academy of Pediatrics warning. “Quick rescue and resuscitation can mean the difference between life, death and lifelong disability.”

About 4,000 to 5,000 Americans drown each year. Most are adults who die in natural bodies of water, such as lakes, ponds or oceans.

But statistically speaking, drowning is a much larger danger to children. It’s the No. 1 cause of death for kids ages 1 to 4, and one of the top killers of children ages 5 to 14. The drowning rate is higher for white kids in the younger group, but much higher for Black, American Indian and Alaska Native children in the older group.

Community college students in California could gain access to medication abortion through campus health centers under a proposal that would extend reproductive health services already required at the state’s public universities.

Assembly Bill 2540 would require community colleges with student health centers to offer access to medication abortion beginning in 2029, if the Legislature provides funding. The bill builds on Senate Bill 24, a 2019 law that requires University of California and California State University student health centers to provide medication abortion beginning in 2023.

Supporters say the bill would close an access gap for community college students who may face transportation, cost, privacy or insurance barriers when care is only available off campus. But campus health center directors warn that many community colleges may not have the funding, staffing or clinical capacity to provide the service.

Authored by Assemblywoman Catherine Stefani, D-San Francisco, the bill would apply to community colleges with student health centers — estimated at roughly 92 campuses statewide. If the Legislature provides funding, those campuses would have to offer access to abortion by medication beginning in 2029.

Company reconsidering its home Last week, the Post reported that Wisk is reconsidering its plans to stay in Mountain View because of an influx of RV dwellers around its campus. Governor Gavin Newsom’s office of economic development has met with the city to advocate for the company, Assistant City Manager Audrey Seymour said in a memo.

Wisk has 800 employees and five buildings at the end of San Antonio Road, between the Palo Alto Baylands and Shoreline Park.

The city counted 65 people living in vehicles in the area, up from 18 in 2022.

The judging was performed primarily by active community newspaper editors and publishers, as well as retired university journalism professors and retired or former newspaper professionals.

Awards for sheriff scandal Many of the newsroom awards were for the Post’s in-depth coverage of the corruption scandal surrounding now-former San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus. The Post began digging into this scandal back in February 2023 when she hired a close friend, Realtor Victor Aenlle, as her chief of staff even though he had no experience leading a law-enforcement organization.

The Post, despite lawsuit threats and a lack of cooperation from county officials, documented instance after instance of misconduct, retaliation and abuse of power largely stemming from her alleged intimate relationship with Aenlle. Other media outlets ignored the story for more than a year. Corpus was fired in October 2025.

First place wins The Post won first-place awards for the design of the front page the day Corpus was fired, an editorial calling for Corpus’ firing, coverage of corruption in the sheriff’s office and breaking news for coverage of a 10-day-long disciplinary hearing.

A Stanford professor and tech executive has been arrested for allegedly abusing his autistic daughter in Palo Alto, police said.

Ashwin Ragram Rao, 62, allegedly verbally abused his daughter and hit her on separate occasions inside the family home on Saint RAO Francis Drive, police said.

A family counselor reported the alleged abuse to Adult Protective Services, and police arrested Rao

Charges for doctor who drove off cliff dropped mental health diversion program with a Stanford University psychiatrist and a family therapist this week, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

“The judge was required by the law to dismiss the charges,” Wagstaffe said.

The auditor assessed Program implementation during its first three years and evaluated governance, compliance, transparency, and progress toward meeting the Program’s priorities and key performance indicators (KPIs).

KPIs are measurable targets used to track project outcomes and ensure program accountability under Measure S. Among the auditor’s findings was that Project E5: San Francisquito Creek Flood Protection Project’s (E5) current KPIs do not fully align with Valley Water’s role, because the San Francisquito Creek Joint Powers Authority (SFCJPA), not Valley Water, is the lead agency responsible for overall project delivery. In response, Valley Water is proposing modifications to Project E5’s KPIs to better reflect Valley Water’s role as a funding partner in the project.

The proposed modification replaces the existing KPIs #1 and #2 with a modified KPI #1 to focus on Valley Water’s funding contributions rather than project delivery outcomes outside Valley Water’s direct control.

Proposed KPI Modifications: 1. Preferred project with federal, state and local funding: Protect more than 3,000 parcels by providing 1% (100-year) flood protection.

The proposed modification is to extend the Public Art Program beyond Valley Water-owned property and infrastructure. The proposed modification would allow funding for eligible public art projects throughout Santa Clara County, rather than limiting funding to projects on Valley Water property and infrastructure. It will better align the program with Valley Water’s strategic goals, available funding, and staffing capacity. It aims to use public art to support broader community benefit, create more opportunities for public education regarding water and environmental stewardship, deter graffiti and litter, and ultimately increase community benefit.

Proposed KPI #3 Modification: “Provide up to $1.5 million over 15 years to implement or fund public art projects on Valley Water property and infrastructure.”

Proposed Description Modification (Scope) To maintain consistency with the proposed change to KPI#3, staff recommends the following modification to the Project F6 description: “This project allows Valley Water to continue responding to requests for cleanup of illegal dumping, trash and graffiti on Valley Water’s property and rights-of-way. Cleanup efforts include graffiti removal from floodwalls, concrete embankments, signs, structures and other Valley Water assets, as well as maintaining, repairing and installing fences and gates so that Valley Water structures and facilities remain safe and clean.
