Menlo Park City Council has sided with 40 residents in their request to reject a new 23-foot-tall home in the Willows neighborhood.

Council unanimously voted on July 14 against the planning commission’s recommendation to approve the development, which is located on a vacant corner lot on 305 Haight St. at the intersection of Haight Street and Laurel Avenue. The home would have been one of the few two-story homes in the neighborhood.

Lot size workarounds The current design is built like a box and needs to be tall in order to accommodate the small lot size, which is less than 5,000 square feet, according to documents submitted by applicant Mohammad Kasirossafar. Kasirossafar is represented by attorney and former Foster City Mayor Charles Bernitizy.

To build the house, however, Kasirossafar requested six variances, or official permissions from the local government to bypass zoning laws. Some of the variances include reducing the corner length by half and parking spaces from two to one.

The Planning Commission on May 4 approved the permit and variances in a 5-2 vote. The commissioners stated the property was unusually small in lot size and width, and “uniquely physically constrained,” according to Associate Planner Matt Pruter.

But neighbors submitted an appeal

to the commission, complaining the design of the house didn’t fit the aesthetics of the neighborhood.

“A giant two story building, 23-feet high next to a single floor house is not reasonable,” said Naveena Ganta, a resident of the Willows neighborhood where the house is being planned.

Others said that cutting down the corner length will reduce drivers’ ability to see children near the street.

“On our block where many young families live, and children regularly play outside ... this is a real and foreseeable safety hazard, not a theoretical one,” wrote Haight Street neighbors James and Erica Mansfield in a July 14 letter to council.

Council’s concerns Councilman Drew Combs said at the July 14 meeting that he agreed with the neighbors that there was potential for the housing project, but not with six variances. Combs said there are zoning rules for a reason, and they cannot be ignored, to which the other council members agreed.

“There’s a viable real project here, but I can’t be supportive of something like this,” Combs said.

But Bernitizy said at the meeting that the new home would be an “important contribution” to the city’s housing stock.

“It’s a rarity to have someone invest the time, effort, energy money and take the risk to have that kind of housing in anyone’s city. From my perspective that should be rewarded,” Bernitizy said.

Man arrested after hiding in resident’s bathroom A man has been arrested for burglary after locking himself in a Barron Park home’s bathroom, Palo Alto police said.

A couple in their 50s were disturbed on Sunday around 2 a.m. when Oscar Dario Banegas, 46, of San Jose rang the doorbell to their home on the 3500 block of Julie Court, according to police.

Mimi & Dick Peery— a legendary 60-year love.

Mildred DeWitt Peery, known and loved by all as “Mimi,” passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, at the age of 86. She was surrounded by her family, who sang to her and shared their final goodbyes at her bedside.

Mimi was born on August 5, 1939, in St. Johns, Arizona, to Wallace and Lorene Platt DeWitt. The vibrant and close-knit small town, as well as her bright and faithful parents, inspired in her a lifelong love of community, learning, music, and faith. She was so proud of St. John’s and her family heritage, and anxiously anticipated becoming reacquainted with the neighbors and friends who nurtured her from her beloved hometown.

She studied Elementary Education at Brigham Young University and, following graduation, became a schoolteacher in San Jose, California. There, through the Stanford Singles Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she met Richard Taylor Peery, who was taken with her genuine and down-to-earth personality, her wholehearted religious commitment, pure beauty and kind heart. They were married for time and all eternity in 1966 in the Mesa, Arizona Temple and built a life together in Palo Alto, where they raised their 4 children and remained for the rest of her life. Their union has been a devoted, even legendary marriage of 60 years.

Mimi was a gifted pianist and accompanist who filled her home with music, performing popular 2-piano concerts and hosting countless recitals and other musical events. She inspired her children to learn music and to make it a part of their lives. She was a masterful quilter whose intricate quilts blessed the beds and homes of dear family and friends, and she annually made pajamas to give to her children on Christmas Eve and eventually her 13 grandchildren.

She was the perfect companion and balance to her husband, characterized by her good humor, engaging conversation, infectious laugh and quiet strength. They were a team, always together in life’s adventures. “Dick and Mimi” were almost always spoken in tandem. They were an unforgettable pair who adored each other’s personalities, quirks, character, and their love never waned. On the contrary, their devotion seemed to grow increasingly through the years.

While she never wished to linger in poor health, her family takes comfort in knowing she is now free, reunited with those who preceded her and awaiting the day they will meet again.

Mimi is survived by her beloved husband, Richard; her children, Dennis Peery, Jason Peery, Jennifer Peery, and David Peery; 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Kim DeWitt. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace and Lorene DeWitt, as well as her sisters, Gayle DeWitt and Greer King and her baby brother, Wallace DeWitt Jr. She will be sorely missed by us all, as well as by her beloved dog, Mia, who was Mimi’s cherished and loyal companion for many years.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 21st, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at the Menlo Park Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 1105 Valparaiso Avenue, Menlo Park, California.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In March 2023, the City was informed of an exposed eight-inch diameter steel gas pipeline in the Arastradero Creek in the PearsonArastradero Preserve. The City received approval from the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) under an emergency permit to conduct a temporary creek stabilization project to protect the gas pipeline from damage caused by future storms. As part of the project, the City installed a combination of cobbles and boulder revetments in the eroded channel bed to protect the gas pipeline and prevent the upstream potable water transmission and sewer pipelines from being exposed. The San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) is requiring the City to address a six-foot headcut that resulted in the need for the emergency repair and remove all temporary fill placed under the USACE emergency permit. Therefore, the purpose of the Project is to comply with the RWQCB’s permit conditions by restoring a portion of Arastradero Creek and relocating the existing water and wastewater utilities in Arastradero Trail and the gas utility further underneath the creek. In addition, downstream of the emergency repair would be treated with woody material to encourage natural processes to deposit sediment, widen the incised sections of creek, and prevent further potential for headcut formation. The Project also proposes minor grading to Arastradero Trail, which runs along the left bank of the creek, to return functionality to an existing culvert, reducing sedimentation into the creek, and improve trail conditions. Zone District: Public Facilities (PF) Site and Design Combining District (D).

Federal health officials remain focused on lettuce from Taylor Farms as the source of a multistate outbreak of a diarrhea-causing parasite, despite inaccurate test results that the government briefly publicized over the weekend.

Food and Drug Administration officials on Monday said a laboratory test incorrectly identified a positive result for cyclospora on a sample of lettuce from Taylor Farms. The FDA posted the finding to its website on Saturday but then said Sunday that the result had been a false positive.

Lettuce products recalled Federal and state authorities have been investigating a rise in cases of the

parasite, initially linking the outbreak in five states to lettuce served at Taco Bell locations. On Saturday, Taylor Farms announced it was recalling 25 shredded lettuce and salad mix products sold under eight different brand codes. The products are used by a number of U.S. food chains and suppliers.

“FDA’s traceback investigation and the outbreak data continue to converge on shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms’ locations in central Mexico,” FDA’s acting food chief, Donald Prater, told reporters on Monday.

FDA officials said the false positive came from a rapid test used to screen for traces of cyclospora. A subsequent check showed the finding was an error.

Two heroic rescues were recognized at last night’s Menlo Park Fire Protection District’s board meeting.

First, the board met Prieta the dog and her owner Mary Juarez. Fire district rescuers plucked the dog out of the bay after it had jumped into the water at Cooley Landing in East Palo Alto on Thursday.

Rescuers were able to rescue the dog after a 30-minute boat ride in the bay. Capt. Tim Bogner guided the rescue team to the pup after spotting him with binoculars. He saw seagulls swarming the dog and attacking it, resulting in a cut to the dog’s cheek.

Man in standoff won’t be charged A Redwood City man who was arrested after he barricaded himself in his home for several hours after he allegedly choked his brother, leaving him unconscious, will not face any criminal charges, the district attorney said yesterday.

Police responded to the 1000 block of Madison Avenue at 8:47 p.m. Saturday after getting a call about a fight between family members, police said.

Officers said a 21-year-old man told them his brother, 37-year-old Orlando Escobedo Avila of Redwood City, had strangled him until he lost consciousness.

The victim had injuries consistent with strangulation, Redwood City police said in a statement Monday.
