DOJ THREAT: The Justice Department is threatening California with possible legal action over what it says are noncitizens believed to have received mail ballots for next month’s midterm elections. A letter sent yesterday to Secretary of State Shirley Weber from Trent McCotter, the acting deputy attorney general, says the Justice Department has provided officials in Los Angeles County with a password-protected thumb drive containing a list of names the federal government believes are likely noncitizens. NINERS SHOOTING: Four men have been arrested in connection with the shooting of San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Keion White at a nightclub in February. The shooting occurred Feb. 9 at the Dahlia nightclub where White was hosting a private Super Bowl party. San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew says authorities arrested the men last week. Filthy and dangerous — that’s how the town of Woodside described a house that has a long history of alleged building code violations, including holes in the walls, wires dangling from the ceiling and a buildup of animal feces inside. VOTE NO
ON MEASURE VOTERS OF PALO ALTO DO NOT BE HUSTLED
J
Don’t let the cynically manipulative language of Measure J fool you. Measure J does NOT set aside funds for developing Cubberley. What it does—and all it does—is permanently raise the sales tax to 10.25%. The money goes straight to City Hall to spend on anything it likes. Maybe that’s on Cubberley. Or maybe that’s on consultants and staff travel. Please read the Measure in your ballot. You’ll see, nothing in it locks in so much as a single dime for Cubberley. To finance the development of Cubberley, the City should propose a one-time Special Tax or Bond Measure, the funds from which are mandated to be spent on the project. Don’t write the City a blank check.
VOTE “NO” ON MEASURE J Ad paid for by Lydia Kou, Jeanne Fleming, and Chris Robell. We are not part of any political campaign, not accepting money from anyone to pay for this ad and not opposed to developing Cubberley transparently.

School board vets vie for single seat BY BRADEN CARTWRIGHT Daily Post Staff Writer
A switch in how school board elections are conducted in Mountain View and Los Altos has pushed three experienced candidates to compete for one seat. The candidates have a combined 20 years on the board. Thida Cornes and Catherine Vonnegut are incumbents, and Sanjay Dave is hoping to return after a two-year hiatus. First by-district election This is the first election since the Mountain View Los Altos High School District was divided into five areas, with a board member elected from each one. Councilwoman Ellen Kamei and NVIDIA engineer Nir Paz are running unopposed in their areas, so they’ll automatically join the board. Cornes, Vonnegut and Dave are running in the area that stretches southwest from Central Expressway to Escuela Avenue, El Camino Hospital and the Sunnyvale border. The area includes the Shoreline West, Old Mountain View and Cuesta Park neighborhoods.
plishments overlapped because they’ve been on the board at the same time. Dave was on the board from 2016 to 2024. Vonnegut has been on the board since 2018, and Cornes since 2022. Dave said he’s proud of steering the district through the pandemic and making Ethnic Studies a graduation requirement. Vonnegut said she’s spearheaded non-academic initiatives, like creating a “graduate profile” that shows the district’s vision for well-rounded students and establishing a student committee to advise Superintendent Eric Volta. Cornes said she’s helped improve test scores for English learners and added classes where students with disabilities can learn alongside their peers.
Legal threat spurs change The board stopped having district-wide election in response to a threat from Santa Barbara attorney Robert Goodman, who sent a demand letter on behalf of Mountain View resident Gerardo Alvarez on Aug. 2, 2024. Goodman said district-wide elections violate the California Voting Rights Act by diluting the representation of Latinos on board. Overlapping accomplishments Volta said no school district or city Cornes, Vonnegut and Dave had a debate on Tuesday with the League of has fought such a letter and won in Women Voters. projects a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for older adults and people with disabilities starting in 2027. Some recipients say it won't offset rising prices. This adjustment means $75 extra per month for the nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries and about 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income recipients. CORNELL PRESIDENT PRESSED: Cornell University President Michael Kotlikoff faced off with angry members of the school’s faculty at a meeting to debate a no-confidence vote in his administration. The meeting yesterday underscored deep frustration on campus over his administration’s handling of a woman’s report that she was gang raped at a fraternity house in 2024. IS SHE A LAWYER? The new White House press secretary is facing mounting questions about her background and resume as she transitions into her role as the public face of the Trump administration. Katie Zacharia has long described herself as a lawyer. But so far, she and the White House have offered no evidence that she passed the bar exam in any state or in China, where she worked for a large law firm years ago. OMAR’S PHONE: Federal authorities investigating Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar have seized the Democratic lawmaker’s phone and have issued more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas, including to some of her relatives. The subpoenas were issued for a grand jury collecting evidence in Minnesota as authorities probe potential fraud in Omar’s immigration paperwork. NETFLIX LAYOFFS: Netflix plans to lay off about 6% of its workforce. Co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos announced the cuts in a memo to employees on yesterday. They said the company’s product, tech, legal, and human resources teams would be most impacted.
