SPOILS OF WAR: Ukraine is reconsidering its ban on creating porn to generate an estimated $25 million a year to purchase 30,000 military drones for the war against Russia, the Washington Post reports. MAYBE HE’S GRUMPY? Doctors say there’s a male equivalent to PMS — “irritable male syndrome,” or IMS, which is marked by Irritability, aggression, anxiety, depression and mood swings. It can result in fatigue, lethargy and reduced sexual desire, according to Dr. Justin Houman, assistant professor of urology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. CNN CHIEF SAFE: David Ellison, whose company will soon own CNN parent Warner Bros./ Discovery, is negotiating to keep Mark Thompson in place as CEO of CNN without oversight from CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, the New York Times reports. Patricia Applegate
¢ December 27, 1952 – August 10, 2026 ¢ Patricia Kiernan “PK” Applegate, née Patricia Kiernan, died on August 10, 2026, in Santa Monica, California. She was born on December 27, 1952, in Malden, Massachusetts. Born and raised in Malden, Patty spent her early years at the family home on Gordon Street. Her father was a lifelong fireman with the Medford Fire Department in Massachusetts, and her mother worked as an administrative assistant for a local doctor. She attended Beebe Junior High School and went on to Malden High School, where she graduated as valedictorian in 1970. Patty’s academic accomplishments continued at Colgate University, where she graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1974. She later earned a Master’s in Finance from New York University in 1978. Her studies also reflected a lasting interest in French literature, an interest that remained an important part of her life for many years. After receiving her master’s degree from NYU in 1978, Patty began her professional career in New York City as a CPA with Peat Marwick Mitchell, where she specialized in expatriate taxation. In 1984, she left the firm and established a sole practice serving individuals in the Bay Area. Her work reflected the strong academic foundation and professional discipline that marked her life from an early age. Patty was the mother of two daughters, Gabby and Sofie, both of whom live in Southern California. Sofie and Gabby spent their early years in the Bay Area and attended Trinity School in Menlo Park. They later attended middle school in Rancho Santa Fe, California, and continued their education at Torrey Pines and Concord Academy in Los Angeles. Gabby graduated from Syracuse University, and Sofie attended Mills College in Oakland.

A central part of Patty’s life was the support she gave to her daughters. She was an avid supporter of their equestrian activities and could often be found cheering them on at local and national competitions. She loved her daughters passionately, and that devotion was a defining part of her life. Patty also maintained a lifelong love of France and French culture. A self-described Francophile, she returned to France many times over the years to visit and live with her adopted family, Josette and Gile Maillet. That connection grew from her college studies in French literature and remained an enduring thread throughout her life. She also had two sisters, Jeannie and Nancy, both of whom died before her. Her brother, John, survives her and works for Citgo in Texas. Patricia Kiernan “PK” Applegate will be remembered in the many places that shaped her life: Malden, where her gifts first became evident; New York, where her professional career began; the Bay Area, where she built her own practice; and California, where much of her family life centered. Her life was marked by scholarship, professional accomplishment, steadfast support for her daughters, and a lasting attachment to the people and places she held close.

Dr. Gary Gechlik said he likes working with people, and he’d be joining a good team on council. “You should be proud of your city and think, who fits on the team?” he said. Did AG investigate? In his letter to Bonta, Murphy asks if the AG’s office was aware of, or investigated concerns about Yusufov’s ownership of the property. “The property’s ownership raises alarms on the city’s part. Further, this information has been in the public record for some time, ever since the 2019 purchase of the property by the current owner. The city would like to know whether your office was aware of, and had investigated, these concerns prior to issuing (the letter),” Murphy wrote. “Just as the project is being approved, the NIMBY lobby is creating more and more sensational, desperate narratives to try to block these new homes,” Heneghan told SFGate when asked about the property’s connections to Russia. Possible buyer Councilman Drew Combs said earlier this week that a possible buyer with ties to the community has expressed interest in purchasing the property. Combs said he and Mayor Betsy Nash have been involved in discussions with the potential buyer. Combs described the possible buyer as knowledgeable of the historical significance of the site and would only make “minimal interior modifications.” The property was deemed eligible for the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service in June 2025.

BAY AREA NATIVE TERAH BAJJALIEH, founder and winemaker of Terah Wine Co., will be pouring at the Downtown Los Altos Witches & Warlocks Wine Stroll on October 23rd from 6 to 9 p.m. Named one of Wine Enthusiast’s Future 40, former Palo Alto sommelier Bajjalieh is known for smalllot, low-intervention wines that spotlight lesser-known grape varieties. The Witches & Warlocks Wine Stroll features nearly 20 different local wineries and 9 live bands throughout beautiful Downtown Los Altos. Find more information and tickets at downtownlosaltos. org.
