Prison for 7-Eleven shooting BY NORAH SHEPPARD-HUTCHINS Daily Post Staff Writer
An East Palo Alto man was sentenced yesterday to 15 years in prison for an attempted murder outside the 7-Eleven in Menlo Park, a prosecutor said. Sosefo Ahofono, 23, will only serve 10 years in prison after receiving five years of credit for his time served in custody while awaiting sentencing.

Will serve 10 years in prison Ahofono opened fire with a long rifle on the 7-Eleven parking lot at 525 Oak Grove Ave. on Aug. 21, 2022, after his intended target left the neighboring J&J Hawaiian BBQ at 1170 Alma St., according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. Ahofono fired 16 shots, hitting the
man he was after, a 20-year-old from Newark, and a car. The incident was not gang-related but resulted from a personal dispute, the DA said at the time. Ahofono is also prohibited from any contact with the victim, and must pay restitution to the victim, Wagstaffe said.

FAKE VOTERS: Federal prosecutors are alleging that 28 immigrants who live in California have illegally registered to vote or have illegally voted. Attorney General Rob Bonta said 28 of 23 million registered voters “makes the point that there is no widespread voter fraud.” WARNING SYSTEM RETURNS: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv is once again receiving early warnings from its partners following recent Russian attacks that he said occurred without enough notice to Ukraine. The warnings, he said, save lives by allowing the public to be alerted and giving military units time to try to intercept the missiles. Zelenskyy said the change happened after talks yesterday with his American counterparts, including a phone call with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Ahofono was turned into the police by his parents after he admitted the crime to them, according to Wagstaffe. Police were hot on Ahofono’s tail before his parents turned him in, Wagstaffe said. Police had linked Ahofono’s father’s truck to the shooting, after reviewing surveillance footage and getting a partial license plate number from the footage.

Student reporters score win in court BY BRADEN CARTWRIGHT Daily Post Staff Writer
A Santa Clara County judge sided yesterday with a journalism advisor and student reporters in their lawsuit that alleges the Mountain View High School principal censored an article about sexual harassment. Judge Eunice Lee denied a motion to dismiss the lawsuit by Principal Kip Glazer and the Mountain View Los Altos High School District. The case is now headed for a trial on Nov. 23. Censorship claim Former advisor Carla Gomez and student reporters Hanna Olson and Hayes Duenow are claiming that Glazer pushed them to censor the article and reassigned Gomez in retaliation for the article being published in spring 2023. In response, Glazer said parents complained about the article accusing their son of sexual harassment. They were scared that their son would attempt suicide if the article was published, Glazer said. So Glazer visited the class and asked to get an advanced copy of the newspaper. She said she was “shocked” to read the article accuse multiple students of serious crimes, including harassment, stalking and attempted rape. “Even more concerning was that
each of the accused students were easily identifiable,” she said. Glazer met with students a second time and told them the article could have “disastrous consequences.” She said she is responsible for the health and safety of all students, including the accused. “I do not regret my actions in trying to educate, lead and guide the student journalists,” she said. Final article and aftermath The Oracle published the article on March 30, 2023. The article detailed several instances of male students sending inappropriate and unwanted messages to other students, including unsolicited nude photos. Zachary Morris, the drama teacher who replaced Gomez, said he was surprised when Glazer offered him the advisor position a month later. He didn’t ask for the job and hadn’t worked in journalism before. Gomez, Olson and Duenow sued Glazer and the school district in February 2024 with support from the Student Press Law Center. The students gave 11 examples of information they changed in the article after meeting with Glazer. Glazer allegedly pressured them to take out sexually explicit messages and references to the school failing to hold sexual harassers accountable.

Don’t let the cynically manipulative language of Measure J fool you. Measure J does NOT set aside funds for developing Cubberley. What it does—and all it does—is permanently raise the sales tax to 10.25%. The money goes straight to City Hall to spend on anything it likes. Maybe that’s on Cubberley. Or maybe that’s on consultants and staff travel. Please read the Measure in your ballot. You’ll see, nothing in it locks in so much as a single dime for Cubberley. To finance the development of Cubberley, the City should propose a one-time Special Tax or Bond Measure, the funds from which are mandated to be spent on the project. Don’t write the City a blank check.

For multiple years, applicants who strongly support historical resources have faced challenges being appointed to the Historical Commission. Many times, council members have opted instead to leave seats vacant. Council discussed options to fill a vacancy created after a member was elected County Tax Assessor in December 2025. The options considered were appointing someone immediately, placing candidates on the June 2026 ballot, or waiting until the November 2026 district election. Multiple members have claimed their recent votes were so unanimous that an additional Council member was unnecessary. The word “democracy” comes from the ancient Greek terms demos (“people”) and kratos (“power” or “rule”). Two men accused of participating in a $1.4 million kickback scheme involving San Mateo County Event Center construction projects have been released from jail after posting bail, a prosecutor said. Michael McLennan, 55, of Vacaville, posted a bail bond Monday, according to court records. James Mercurio, 66, of Los Altos, posted a bail bond Oct. 13, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. Mercurio’s bail was set at $750,000. McLennan’s bail was reduced to $200,000 Friday, Wagstaffe said. Mercurio was an executive with the 49ers for about 30 years before working as a construction project manager for the event center from October 2024
to March 2026. During that time, Mercurio allegedly directed contracts to his childhood friend, McLennan, who then gave a portion of contract money to him, according to Wagstaffe.
Commercial burglary charges Wagstaffe said the contracts included $1 million in funding from county tax dollars. Both men are charged with 20 counts each of commercial burglary. “If those allegations are true, people hired by the Event Center took advantage of the public’s trust and resources. The Event Center is important to our community, we deserve answers, and I will make sure county residents receive them,” San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President Noelia Corzo said in a statement yesterday.

The Oct. 10 event raised $72,000 for Okizu, a Northern California nonprofit whose camps let kids with cancer and their families come together for much-needed recreation and respite. New England Lobster owner Marc Worrall says the kids at the camp say they go to the hospital for treatment, but they go to Okizu to heal.
The mission of Okizu is to provide children and families affected by childhood cancer with peer support, respite and community through transformative camp experiences and programs, all offered free of charge to the families. “We completely forgot about doctors, needles and hospitals for a few days,” said one Okizu parent. “It was such a wonderful distraction from real life… and important respite to regain our sanity.”
“We definitely took a bite out of cancer at this year’s Lobsterfest,” Worrall said. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who attended, donated, and volunteered!”
Okizu holds a special place in Worrall’s heart; over the last 20 years New England Lobster has raised more than $1 million for the nonprofit. And it’s not the only organization that has benefitted from fundraising support from New England Lobster. Worrall says his restaurant has more than 30 years of experience helping local organizations raise money. From sports teams and school clubs to Rotary and other civic organizations and nonprofits, they’ve helped them all by hosting lobster and/or crab feeds or by selling delicious dishes out of their seafood truck. Worrall says his lobster truck fundraisers let people order their seafood items or lobster roll kits ahead
of time, and then New England Lobster can roll up in their refrigerated seafood truck for everyone to pick up their items. It’s easy and delicious and sure to be a hit. But what Worrall loves best is when you call New Marc Worrall, owner England Lobster and everyone contributes their own ideas to make something really creative and compelling. County OKs grant for traffic patrols BY NORAH SHEPPARD-HUTCHINS Daily Post Staff Writer

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors yesterday approved a grant so Woodside and CHP can increase traffic patrols at the Four Corners intersection. A $125,000 Measure K grant sponsored by Supervisor Ray Mueller was approved at a board meeting yesterday to target speeding and racing along highways 35 and 84. Measure K is a general half-cent sales tax that is used to fund a variety of projects in the county. Supervisors are able to pick some of the projects to fund. The grant will fund two extra CHP officers to patrol the area on weekends. The area near the intersection of Skyline Boulevard and La Honda Road
has seen 28 fatalities over the last six years, according to a Caltrans report. Safety concerns caused residents to form a group called “The Safe Corridor Initiative” to advocate for a safe corridor, and Caltrans began making changes to the intersection of Skyline Boulevard and La Honda Road in September. The Safe Corridor Initiative’s founder called yesterday for state Senator Josh Becker and Assemblyman Marc Berman to help secure permanent enforcement on the highways, which must be arranged and funded at the state level. “Ray Mueller has been doing what he can, but these are state highways,” the initiative’s founder, Walker Wells said in an email.

It’s not always patience and luck that get patients off the organ transplant waiting list and into the operating room. Unlike in many areas of medicine, experts say there’s a lot of variation in the U.S. transplant system. Knowing there are differences and what to ask might help. “I had to ask a lot of questions to figure out what it was that I could do to move the needle,” said Katherine Screws of Phoenix, who got a rare intestine transplant after she decided to get on the waiting list at more than one hospital to increase her chances. It can be difficult to learn how to navigate that search, but there’s pub-
licly available information about which hospitals perform the most of each type of transplant, plus their waiting times and outcomes. Long used by experts analyzing the transplant system, the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients, or SRTR, database has new patient-friendly tools developed in the hopes that more would-be transplant recipients will use it. Transplant eligibility varies There are about 100,000 people on the U.S. transplant list at any given time, the vast majority of whom need a kidney. With just over 49,000 transplants performed in the U.S. last year,

more people than ever are getting new organs. It’s mostly thanks to over a decade of increases in donations from the deceased, which are recovered by organ procurement organizations, or OPOs. But more organs are needed to meet the demand, and different transplant hospitals have different criteria for who they’ll accept on their waiting list. Sometimes, “if a patient receives a ‘no’ at one place, they can go somewhere else and be successfully transplanted,” said Dr. Syed Ali Husain, a kidney specialist at NYU Langone Health. Each transplant program’s waiting list is linked to a national automated matching system. OPOs enter information about viable organs into that system, which generates lists of possible matches at multiple hospitals in order of priority. When the OPO offers an organ, the transplant team must quickly decide if it’s a good choice for that patient or the offer moves to the
hospital with the next-in-line candidate. Some hospitals are more conservative than others about which organs they’ll accept, said Husain, who studies such differences.
Choosing a transplant center Typically, a doctor or other health worker points patients to the nearest hospital offering the kind of transplant they need. But the SRTR database allows people to compare transplant centers around the country in multiple ways. Search for a particular organ and a list of the highest-to-lowest-volume centers pops up, with dials to show how they perform on such measures as getting a transplant faster, survival on the waiting list and the new organ’s survival. Like Screws, the Phoenix patient, some people choose to “double list” at a hospital closer to home and another higher-volume transplant program further away.

Trade Wars and Currency Wars are accelerating worldwide. The old monetary system is failing. Indebted national currencies are depreciating in a see-saw race to the bottom. So much worldwide debt is in default or is being masked with more debt. Politicians posture at each other, but they all created the situation by buying power and favors while mortgaging your children’s future. Stocks and bond markets, long supported by Central Banks, may be challenged going forward as governments have exhausted their debt expansion tools. Recent new highs in equities, due to some promising companies, may be more post-election hope than substance. Cryptocurrencies had their run, but the hope for a sounder and more private fiat system remains challenged while a past price bubble for the majority has been costly. Bitcoin is an example of those still performing among the thousands of currencies & tokens in this young experiment. Wise and calm observers know that longterm, gold is money, not debt, not paper promises. For thousands of years it has protected families from currency depreciation, paper defaults, and certain political abuses. If you have been waiting to buy gold, or buy it “cheaper,” reconsider. Gold bottomed near $1040 at the end of 2015. We are in a new multi-year uptrend reconfirmed by the current strength just below all time highs. It was only then that the DMV took his license. Singh and his attorney did not respond to requests for comment. State law empowers the agency to investigate drivers involved in fatal and serious-injury collisions and suspend their licenses, with or without a conviction. But the DMV routinely does nothing. Even when the agency does act, records show it can take years to do so. We examined court filings and DMV records for more than 130 commercial licensees charged with vehicular manslaughter from 2019 to early 2024 following a fatal crash on the job or off-duty in a personal vehicle. Nearly half had a valid Class A or Class B license as of late May. That includes a dozen drivers who got a ticket for unsafe driving in a com-

mercial vehicle after having already killed someone. Three point violation What’s more, vehicular manslaughter is supposed to be a three-point violation for a truck driver, but in almost every DMV record we reviewed, it was listed as two, the penalty for a regular driver. The agency in a written statement said it relies on the courts to notify it when a conviction involves a commercial vehicle so it can assess the appropriate number of points. Despite such examples of bureaucratic indifference, we did find one area of enforcement in which the DMV is aggressive: making sure people pay fines. In 2023, months before the agency finally suspended Singh’s license, it started sending Loren Chow letters threatening to garnish his wages, seize his property and put a lien on his home. The DMV said he was late paying his vehicle registration fee on the SUV that was totaled, by the truck driver it allowed to stay on the road. ‘You’re gonna kill somebody’ The DMV’s inaction against commercial drivers is all the more consequential because of the clear risks they pose. Truck driving is a grueling job involving long hours over vast distances. A fully loaded semi can total 80,000 pounds — 20 times the weight of a car. A speeding semitruck doesn’t do fender-benders; it obliterates. “One thing goes wrong, you’re gonna kill somebody,” said Joe Rajkovacz, a longtime owner-operator and advocate with the Western States Trucking Association. About 4,000 people died in
NEWS
large-truck crashes in California from 2015 through 2024, the most recent decade for which federal data is available. California’s licensing decisions have an impact beyond the state’s borders. Supersized trucks, long the backbone of our economy, haul billions of dollars of food from the state’s farms and online orders from teeming ports to destinations across the country. Tami Friedrich, president of the Truck Safety Coalition, a national advocacy group, said that’s why regulators need to do more to flag truck drivers who shouldn’t be on the road. She got involved in road safety issues after her sister and brother-in-law and their two children — Kris, Alan, Anthony and Brandie — died in a crash with a big rig just after Christmas in 1989. “There’s a certain level of responsibility above and beyond a regular car driver that they should adhere to,” Friedrich said.
Sacramento and in another collision in Amador. The DMV didn’t suspend his commercial driver’s license until September, after we asked about the case. Another driver with five prior collisions — including one in 2021 in which he veered onto the shoulder in a semitruck and killed someone in Riverside County — was able to renew his license last year and almost immediately racked up two tickets for speeding in a commercial vehicle. He had a valid trucking license as of September. While regular drivers can easily drive on a suspended license, a trucking company isn’t likely to turn over a loaded semi to a driver without a valid commercial license, experts said. That means DMV action would be all the more meaningful. But the agency often acts only when it’s legally required to and doesn’t use its immense discretionary power to ensure that unsafe drivers get off the road.
Not held accountable The cases CalMatters examined suggest the state is not holding them to that level. A truck driver killed a 55-yearold man in Bakersfield in 2023, four years after court records show he allegedly injured a woman with his semi in a Sacramento crash. There’s nothing on his driving record to indicate that the DMV did anything in response. He got in yet another truck collision in 2025. At the same time, the Trump administration has alleged California is improperly giving commercial licenses to people who don’t meet immigration or language standards. The court files and DMV records we reviewed do not include drivers’ immigration status. CalMatters sent the DMV a list of commercial drivers along with questions for this story. The agency declined

an interview request and wouldn’t comment on specific cases but, shortly after, took action against a dozen of the drivers, such as suspending licenses or stripping commercial driving privileges. In an email, DMV spokesman Jonathan Groveman wrote the agency recently updated how it handles fatal crashes and manslaughter convictions. “During this modernization process, the DMV identified some cases that had not been previously reviewed and have now been processed or are currently being processed,” according to Groveman’s email. He also wrote law enforcement and the courts need to report information to the agency in a timely manner in order for the DMV to act.

Cards worth $1M stolen from truck
Police in California are investigating the theft of trading cards worth nearly $1 million that were taken from a FedEx truck parked outside of a company that verifies memorabilia. The truck was broken into on Oct. 13 near Professional Sports Authenticator, also known as PSA, which authenticates trading cards, autographs, comic books, and other memorabilia and grades their condition, Santa Ana Police Department spokeswoman Natalie Garcia said in a news release. Pokemon and sports cards were among the items that were stolen, the release said.
The truck’s lock was gone and two pallets were taken, she said. A third pallet was disturbed. “The estimated value of the stolen cards at the time of the incident was $963,000. However, the exact value of the stolen items has not yet been determined,” Garcia said in the news release.
Cards’ value could be higher Nick Andrews, a card collector near Boston, told the AP the value of what was taken could be much higher. He said one person who submitted cards for grading on behalf of several people told him that they lost half a Truck left unattended million dollars in declared value. The driver had left the truck unatPSA’s parent company, Collectors, tended, Garcia said in an email yester- said it contacted affected customers diday.
