The Jack in the Box in San Carlos was gutted by a fire June 26 that broke out from inside the restaurant, though the cause of the $1.75 million fire is still unknown. Firefighters were called to the restaurant at 1100 El Camino Real at 5:24 a.m.

An employee also said it smelled of burning rubber and electrical cables, according to Shugart. An electrical fire cannot be ruled out. The investigation is ongoing. The drive-thru window area appeared to have the most damage from the fire. The total property loss is estimated to be about $1.75 million.

Opinion Ex-sheriff won’t be charged 6

Daily Post Monday, October 19, 2026

If convicted of a misdemeanor, a defendant like her with no criminal history would get probation or community service. So what’s the point?

Maybe a criminal charge wouldn’t have mattered

A low-stakes trial If you want to see Corpus stand trial, that could still happen. A civil grand jury has brought four “accusations” against the former sheriff that will lead to a trial. But a civil grand jury’s powers are extremely limited. If a public official is convicted of an accusation brought by a civil grand jury, the most severe consequences the official could face are removal from office and a ban from ever holding elected office again. Corpus has already been removed from office, and it’s unlikely she could ever get elected CORPUS to anything in the future. As a result, there won’t be much at stake at such a trial. She could probably save herself the legal fees of a trial and just accept the accusations in order to prevent a trial and move on with her life.

I have a great deal of respect for San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. Over the years, I’ve seen him make difficult decisions without bending to politics or pressure from special interests. So I’m perplexed by his decision not to bring criminal charges against former sheriff Christina Corpus, who was fired for corruption. I think there was enough evidence to charge her with false arrest for ordering the arrest of a political opponent, deputies union president Carlos Tapia, on a bogus timecard charge. Wagstaffe himself said the timecard charge against Tapia wasn’t justified. In fact, Capt. Brian Philip quit rather than carry out Corpus’s order to arrest Tapia. Dave And an independent hearing officer, who Price reviewed the evidence in the case and heard testimony, said the arrest of Tapia was one of the reasons why the Board of Supervisors should fire Corpus. Wagstaffe’s decision sends the wrong message. To law enforcement officers, it says that they won’t face serious consequences for a false arrest. I doubt Wagstaffe wants to leave that impression, but that’s one way to read this. On the other hand, convicting Corpus of false arrest might not matter much in the bigger picture.

Civil suits remain Yes, there are numerous civil suits against her, but in nearly every case, the county is also named as a defendant because the government has the deep pockets. It’s doubtful those cases will ever go to trial. They’ll get settled out of court with a brief press release in which both sides claim they were blameless. But you — the taxpayer — will be stuck with the bill. So her case will end not with a bang but a whimper, to quote T.S. Eliot. One footnote: She will be walking away with a pension that pays her $402,338 a year along with health care benefits worth $75,307.44 annually. She’ll get those benefits, with inflation adjustments, until her death. She’s 55. The Board of Supervisors, who decided to fire Corpus, has made no effort to claw back her post employment benefits.

A misdemeanor If she were to be charged with false arrest, it would probably be a misdemeanor. It would only rise to a felony if there were aggravating circumstances, like if she used violence or had kidnapped Tapia. Nobody is alleging that here.

THE LOS ALTOS CITY COUNCIL OR ITS COMMISSIONS?

For multiple years, applicants who strongly support historical resources have faced challenges being appointed to the Historical Commission. Many times, council members have opted instead to leave seats vacant. Council discussed options to fill a vacancy created after a member was elected County Tax Assessor in December 2025. The options considered were appointing someone immediately, placing candidates on the June 2026 ballot, or waiting until the November 2026 district election. Multiple members have claimed their recent votes were so unanimous that an additional Council member was unnecessary. Dear Editor: Please vote on Nov. 3 and let your voice be heard. There are 14 Propositions on the ballot — too many. It’s the result of Sacramento legislators not doing their elected jobs, who are beholden to special interests and not caring for you or me. Vote “no” on the Regional Transit Measure (RTM), and Measure V (San Mateo Community College District). Regional transit (BART, Caltrain, SamTrans, Muni, etc) needs to be run more efficiently and fiscally responsible — don’t fall for their “doomsday” scenarios of closed stations and less service if it doesn’t pass. I’m taken aback by the gall and arrogance of the San Mateo Community College District asking for $848 million in bonds for repairing and construction on their three colleges. They’re asking for this money just after the recent felony convictions of former Chancellor Ron Galatolo for accepting lavish gifts from contractors paid by the previous bond measures. Let your voice be heard on Nov. 3. Steve Duncan Burlingame

It’s just a money grab

Dear Editor: Thank you for Monday’s editorial explaining why the latest proposed sales tax increase, RTM, is nothing but a money grab. As you point out, transit system operators routinely ignore grand jury reports. Before increasing taxes yet again, waste needs to be removed from transportation projects.

And why do the rich tech companies and the transit contractors always stick people of modest means with sales tax increases? These citizens must pay the greatest percentage of their income in these regressive taxes and fees. Each increase by itself does not amount to much, but the cumulative effect is to add to the unaffordability of the region. What happened to “affordability” concerns, anyway? I agree with the Post; “No” on RTM. Bill Hough Los Altos

Dear Editor: The League of Women Voters of South San Mateo County has carefully analyzed the “Downtown Parking Plazas Ordinance” on the ballot in Menlo Park. The most immediate and damaging consequence of Measure P is simple: it would block or significantly delay the construction of 345 badly needed affordable homes and 100% replacement parking. This could lead to decertification of the city’s Housing Element and trigger state penalties, loss of funding, and more builder’s remedy projects like 80 Willow. Menlo Park’s July 2026 updated housing report reclassified 351 affordable units from active to inactive status and details how Menlo Park is at increased risk of having its Housing Element decertified by the state if Measure P passes. Measure P requires the city to defend the ordinance against all legal challenges at taxpayer expense. This

could cost Menlo Park taxpayers millions of dollars. It transfers final authority on legal defenses and appeals to three unelected proponents — not voters, not City Council. Measure P replaces transparent decision-making by elected officials with a rigid and costly ordinance that prevents City Council from adapting to changing needs and mitigating other risks. Our City Council utilizes outside experts and balances competing community needs through public hearings where all residents can participate. Complex development decisions cannot be responsibly reduced to yes/no ballot votes. Conclusion: Vote “no” on Measure P. Henigin a great choice

Dear Editor: As our Palo Alto and Stanford neighbors review their ballots this election season, I’d like to share my perspective on what makes an effective Palo Alto school board member. I value board members who: • keep students — their growth and well-being — at the center of every decision; • consider all sides of an issue; • seek input from students, staff, and the broader community; and, • disagree constructively, always with the best interests of our kids in mind. Our community’s children are our greatest asset. I understand the gravity

She will bring a clear, sustained focus on students; the ability to listen for understanding and move conversations toward progress; and deep knowledge of the district, gained through her years as an educator and volunteer. I especially value her longstanding commitment to our students and schools, and I know that she’ll make an excellent school board member. Please join me in voting for Linda Henigin. remain opposed because the ordinance lacks firm guidelines and accountability. It prioritizes spending on programs and operations with no list of amenities, no budget, no timeline and no citizen oversight. Voters may tend to base their vote on claims made in a city website or glossy brochure. I want to remind voters that these claims are not binding. Palo Alto’s representative on the Valley Water board, who was removed from a board meeting on Oct. 13 for refusing to yield the floor and shouting at other board members, has been kicked out of a meeting before, according to a new report. Board member Rebecca Eisenberg was removed by security guards during a closed session on Jan. 29, the report said. Eisenberg is running for re-election on Nov. 3. Board member Tony EISENBERG Estremera warned Eisenberg multiple times at the meeting to calm down, but she kept “screaming, threatening people with liability and lawsuits, very angrily shouting, interrupting and going off topic,” the report said. Estremera called for security. Before they arrived, Eisenberg accused former District Counsel Carlos Orellana of lying to the board.

“I was so concerned for my safety that I asked security to accompany me back to my office and then out to my car,” Orellana told McCourt. Orellana resigned in June. The board reviewed McCourt’s report on Eisenberg at a meeting on Tuesday. Estremera had security guards escort Eisenberg out after she went over her five-minute time limit to read a statement. “You’re done now — and out of the building, not in the back to harass people,” Estremera said.

Tension Board member Richard Santos said he felt calm without Eisenberg in the room. “The tension is gone,” he said. Eisenberg has filed a federal lawsuit against Valley Water, alleging that she’s been retaliated against for opposing a dam project and exposing gender bias. Eisenberg said McCourt’s report was released to harm her re-election bid against Los Altos Councilman Pete Dailey.

Pro Bono Home Tips to avoid problems Skilled Nursing with costumes at work A Limited Opportunity for Qualifying Patients

As Care Indeed advances toward Medicare-certified home health agency status, we are extending an opportunity to select members of our community: complimentary, pro bono skilled nursing services for those who qualify — provided at no charge, for a defined period of time.

With Halloween right around the corner, one question that inevitably crosses employers’ minds is: should we allow costumes at our Halloween party? While costumes may enhance the fun, they also invite the risk of employees choosing provocative attire or racially offensive outfits that may lead to a harassment complaint. The simplest approach is to not allow costumes in the workplace. But there are plenty of other ways to allow costumes without having to worry about an employee’s lack of good judgment. Here are some tips from employers. com, a website for HR professionals:

FDA approves new option for sunscreen For the first time in more than a quarter-century, Americans have a new option when shopping for sunscreen: a skin-protecting chemical that’s long been a go-to option in Europe and other parts of the world. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved bemotrizinol — sometimes called BEMT — in June. The first sunscreens containing it are now hitting U.S. store shelves, including formulas from Neutrogena and other manufacturers.

Sunscreens that block both forms are labeled “broad spectrum protection.” Those that don’t must carry an FDA warning label. BEMT is the first chemical-based sunscreen in the U.S. that offers this dual protection. Previously, manufacturers had to mix multiple ingredients to protect against both UVA and UVB light.

Sheriff: Man hits 2 kids, flees

A driver whose license was suspended because of a DUI conviction has been arrested in Half Moon Bay after allegedly leaving the scene of a vehicle collision that injured two children. Robert Schumann, 37, of San Francisco, was accused of hitting two 6-year-olds who were riding their bicycles near Grandview Boulevard and Golden Gate Avenue, before allegedly fleeing the scene in his vehicle. children are hospitalized in stable condition. A witness gave a description of the vehicle, which was found after a search. A police drone helped find Schumann in a wooded area. He was accused of being under the influence of alcohol when he allegedly hit the children. He was also allegedly driving with a suspended license because of a previous DUI conviction.

questioned whether (J-Spencer) had friends, whether those friends actually liked him, and whether they knew him,” the suit said. Glielmi, who has been Stanford’s gymnastics coach for 25 years and won eight national championships, didn’t return a request for comment Friday. J-Spencer enrolled at Stanford in fall 2022. Glielmi allegedly told J-Spencer that there was an 80% chance he would be cut and wouldn’t be recruited by a top program. J-Spencer performed well at a team competition and asked to be considered for an upcoming lineup, and Glielmi allegedly said no because J-Spencer “f***ing annoyed the s***” out of him, the suit said.

Stanford removed J-Spencer from the team in August 2024 and only reinstated him after his mother intervened, the suit said. J-Spencer said he had a successful season as a junior, including winning an NCAA event versus Penn State. J-Spencer said he complained to Stanford HR about Glielmi in May 2025, and Glielmi allegedly responded by discouraging assistant coaches from spotting J-Spencer during practice. Glielmi banned J-Spencer from participating in team competitions for his senior year, so J-Spencer transferred schools, the suit said. J-Spencer is suing Stanford for breaching the student-athlete handbook and inflicting emotional distress.

NEWS

Holmes docu sells out theaters North American movie theaters were flooded with new films this weekend, including a video game reboot, a big budget survival thriller and a Jane Austen adaptation. While Paramount’s “Street Fighter” took the first-place spot, most of the attention and cultural discourse was elsewhere: On the three-hour Elizabeth Holmes documentary, “You Can See Everything.” Buzz and box office don’t always line up, but “You Can See Everything” made an extraordinary $15 million from only 855 screens, with over 2,000 sellout showings over the weekend. It also had the biggest opening for a film playing on under 1,000 screens since “Borat” opened to $26.5 million in 2006. The film, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, was made in secret over three years. Fielder spent over a month with the disgraced Theranos found-

er and her family, including two young children and partner Billy Evans, in her final days before the Palo Alto entrepreneur reported to federal prison. The reviews have been extremely positive, with 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and 99 on Metacritic. “You Can See Everything” cost under $7 million to make and less than $10 million to market.

COMPUTER DRAMA?

“Everybody underestimated the movie, because on paper this is like, wait, a three-hour documentary?” said Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak. “But he (Fielder) is a huge draw, and he has a huge following on social media, and then Elizabeth Holmes is just a character that you couldn’t even make up. It’s stranger than fiction, and that’s really compelling.”
