Candidates weigh in on tax BY BRADEN CARTWRIGHT
NO LIVE EXECUTION: President Trump has announced the Pentagon will no longer livestream the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan. The decision comes after bipartisan criticism and Vice President JD Vance’s comments that he would not watch it. Trump says in a social media post yesterday that airing the execution might deter terrorism but acknowledges many prefer not to see it. CITY BROKE: The city of Hollister had $178 in its general bank account, SF Gate reports. The city had to borrow $18 million from its other accounts in order to make payroll. The city announced layoffs as a result of the budget crisis, but has declined to give an exact number.

Tapia was never charged by Wagstaffe, who concluded Tapia should not have been arrested. Wagstaffe said that although the incident was “abhorrent,” nothing constituted a violation of criminal law. Two Palo Alto school board candidates support renewing a parcel tax, and one candidate wants to work on restoring trust first. “We need to bring a bit more fiscal discipline and management to the district,” candidate John Craig said. “If we do that — we’ve restored trust in the governance, we offer the classes and stuff that people want and people trust the district — and we still have a (funding) gap, then I think you can go back to taxpayers.” Craig is one of three candidates run[See TAX, page 47]
Police crack down on ‘vanlord’ BY BRADEN CARTWRIGHT Daily Post Staff Writer
Palo Alto police are cracking down on a woman who allegedly rents out RVs parked on city streets. Bridget Yvonka Li, 52, of Mountain View, was cited three times on Oct. 6 for “vanlording,” or renting out RVs. In late 2024, police noticed several

Tenants told police that Li was renting the RVs to them, and officers found her ads online, Hornung said. Palo Alto City Council voted 6-1 to ban “vanlords” like Li on Dec. 8, 2025.

On August 27, 2024, the Los Altos City Council voted 4-1 to declare Parking Plazas 7 and 8 as “Surplus Land.” This decision makes the land available for sale or lease to developers, without setting aside space for continued public use, preserving mature trees—such as an 11-foot circumference conifer and two mature pistache tree groves—or maintaining setbacks to preserve sunlight on nearby buildings and sidewalks. Two candidates to be trusted with our students’ future. ACCOUNTABILITY MATTERS
Academic Excellence:
Students First:
- They believe schools should deliver a world-class educational experience to all students suited to their capabilities and interests.
- They’re independent from special interests, with a proven track record of advocating for students and the community to the school board.
- They stand for honors courses and against de-laning—a policy teachers warn harms all students by preventing level-appropriate instruction and that 95% of the community rejects. - Their opponent supports the district’s elimination of honors courses like Honors Biology, and favors de-laning.
- Their opponent is supported by a litany of special interests and has publicly advocated in writing for Don Austin who bullied students and families.
Proven Board & Management Experience:
Integrity and Transparency:
- Extensive experience managing budgets and large diverse teams.
- Have a well documented history of advocating on behalf of parents and students for more transparency and more checks and balances.
- John has managed multinational teams in the thousands and budgets well in excess of PAUSD’s $400M a year budget; Avery co-founded Shazam. - Their opponent has no relevant experience.
- Their opponent, a PAUSD instructional aide, used district resources and staff, and issued school credit to students for campaign work—in direct conflict with state laws and district policies.

Housing nonprofit makes ballot push BY NORAH SHEPPARD-HUTCHINS Daily Post Staff Writer
A San Mateo County housing nonprofit is campaigning in favor of a half-cent transit bailout tax and against Menlo Park’s Measure P, which would prevent the development of parking lots for public housing. The San Mateo County Housing Leadership Council sent out an email Wednesday urging voters to vote yes on RTM and Prop 1 and no on Measure P. Lobbying vs. campaigning Typically nonprofits can’t get involved in political activities; however, ballot measures count as lobbying rather than campaigning, June Shin, a rep-
resentative with the housing council, said in an email to the Post. If nonprofits campaign or endorse candidates, they would lose their tax-exempt status, according to IRS guidelines. Although nonprofits are prohibited from campaigning or endorsing candidates, they may engage in some lobbying. However, too much lobbying can also risk loss of tax-exempt status, according to IRS guidelines. The nonprofit also invited residents to join a virtual phone bank on Tuesdays and Thursdays, where volunteers will call voters to urge them to vote no on Measure P, as well as a canvassing event on Oct. 25.

Cell sites get nod despite concerns BY BRADEN CARTWRIGHT Daily Post Staff Writer
Palo Alto’s Architectural Review Board was caught yesterday between residents who don’t want AT&T’s equipment near their homes and the company trying to improve its coverage. domestic violence, Baker said in an email yesterday.
Stabbing incident The Mountain View case happened around 3 p.m. on March 30, 2025. Johnson drove to her ex-boyfriend’s apartment on El Camino Real near the Sunnyvale border, where he was living with his new girlfriend. Johnson shattered a back window then went to the front door and stabbed her ex-boyfriend in the hand with a five-inch pocket knife, police said. They have a 3-year-old child together. San Jose officers found Johnson in her car that evening along with a gun, and she tried to smuggle meth into the Elmwood Jail in Milpitas, police said.

Shoppers get new sunscreen option
For the first time in more than a quarter-century, Americans have a new option when shopping for sunscreen: a skin-protecting chemical that’s long been a go-to option in Europe and other parts of the world. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved bemotrizinol — sometimes called BEMT — in June. The first sunscreens containing it are now hitting U.S. store shelves, including formulas from Neutrogena and other manufacturers. Dermatologists say the chemical fills an important market gap by offering broad protection, like the most well-established sunscreen ingredients, but without their cosmetic downsides, including white streaking. BEMT has decades of safety data behind it, including studies showing it has minimal absorption into the skin. That’s been a concern with some older sun-blocking chemicals. “It’s not a brand-new ingredient that you’re going to be the first person to try,” said Dr. Jennifer Stein, a dermatologist at NYU Langone Health.
Nationally Recognized Mohs Surgery Experts Over 40,000 Surgeries Performed
BEMT is the first chemical-based sunscreen in the U.S. that offers this dual protection. Previously, manufacturers had to mix multiple ingredients to protect against both UVA and UVB light. “This ingredient provides a solution for what is currently a big gap with respect to providing strong UVA protection,” said David Andrews, chief science officer of the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit that advocates for higher sunscreen standards. A different class of sunscreens, using minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, has long been shown to offer strong protection against both forms of ultraviolet light. But some people — particularly those with darker complexions — tend to avoid them because they cause white streaking and discoloration. In other cases, people don’t like their texture or consistency.
Less skin penetration The fact that chemical-based sunscreens are absorbed into the skin means they have to be carefully studied to make sure they aren’t building up in the body at unsafe levels. Open enrollment for Medicare plans began yesterday and enrollees will face a slew of changes that go into effect in 2027. During the enrollment period, which ends Dec. 7, people will have the opportunity to choose between traditional Medicare and privately run Medicare Advantage plans in their area, as well as prescription drug plans. Those changes go into effect on Jan. 1. Open enrollment also comes as inflation adds pressure on seniors whose healthcare costs have risen and as midterm elections are weeks away. Voters have consistently said that the cost of living is a major concern heading into the elections. The Medicare enrollment period also comes as the Social Security Administration announced Wednesday that the annual cost-of-living adjustment for older adults and people with disabilities will go up by 3.6% beginning in 2027, which translates to $75 extra per month for the nearly 72 million people who receive monthly Social Security benefits and about 7.3 million beneficiaries who get Supplemental Security Income.

The temporary Part D premium subsidy will also end early. The Trump administration concludes at year’s end a temporary Medicare Part D subsidy program that has helped offset premiums. It was initially implemented by former President Joe Biden’s administration in 2024 to lower patients’ Medicare Part D prescription drug costs in response to the effects of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has projected only modest price increases for most people.

Daily Post Friday, October 16, 2026
BY LINDSEY BAHR Associated Press Writer
Thirty-four days before the disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes was due in federal prison to serve an 11-year sentence for conspiracy and fraud, she and her partner, Billy Evans, welcomed a film crew into their beachside cottage. The idea, Holmes and Evans said, was to help the public understand who Holmes really is. The narrative was incorrect. The journalists and the television shows, like the Hulu miniseries “The Dropout,” had gotten her wrong. And so, in one of the many mysteries of this fascinating project, they chose Nathan Fielder, a comedian known for blurring fiction and reality in absurdist shows like “Nathan for You” and “The Rehearsal,” to come into their rented home in Del Mar, California, and document their life with their two young children in her final days before prison. They even invited Fielder to stay with them — an offer that he declines at first but later accepts, about 20 days in. Symphonic Spooktacular October 24 & 25, 2026 at the California Theatre
This Halloween, Peter Jaffe and Symphony San Jose conjure up a program of heroes, villains, and things that go bump in the night. Alongside the big screen's most iconic scores of suspense and spectacle — Danny Elfman's brooding Batman, John Williams' menacing Imperial March, the mischief of Ghostbusters and I Put a Spell on You, the eerie enchantment of The Sorcerer's Apprentice and The Transylvanian Lullaby — the program is also grounded in classical tradition, with Wagner's sweeping Ride of the Valkyries, Rossini's rousing William Tell Overture, Gounod's wry Funeral March of a Marionette, and Márquez's fiery Conga del Fuego Nuevo. It's a concert that bridges the concert hall's great classical drama with the unforgettable sounds of film and television, built for chills, thrills, and everything in between. Whether you catch it in the afternoon or after dark, this is one performance where the music does the haunting. Tickets start at $35. Contact us to learn more about our group discounts, our $25 Soundcheck Pass for patrons aged 5–25 (valid for eight Saturday night concerts!), and 50% off for patrons under 17.

UK crowds cheer on Harry, Meghan
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan appeared together in a trio of charity visits yesterday, their first joint public appearance since moving back to England, as they seek to rebuild their brand in Britain after walking away from royal duties six years ago. The couple started their day at the Community Recording Studio, in the city of Nottingham in central England, that uses music, performance and athletic programs to help young people build confidence and develop practical skills. The couple, who have the royal titles of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, received a warm welcome and
cheers, especially from the schoolchildren present. “We love you, Duchess Meghan, we love you,” one woman shouted. The couple then went to Himmah Hub, central England’s biggest food bank, and Epic Partners, which offers sports, education and mentoring programs for disadvantaged young people. Across their three stops, Harry and Meghan stopped to take selfies, give hugs and shake hands with fans. The visit to Nottingham was particularly significant as it was there they made their first joint appearance after announcing their engagement in 2017.

Silicon Valley Whisk(e)y Festival
Saturday, October 24 at Palo Alto Elks Lodge The Silicon Valley Whisk(e)y Festival announces its highly anticipated 2026 return, marking a significant expansion and a strategic relocation to Palo Alto. Following three consecutive successful runs in San Carlos, the premier tasting event is scaling up to accommodate the region’s growing demand for premium spirits, aiming to welcome up to 400 whiskey enthusiasts and industry professionals. The 4th Annual Silicon Valley Whisk(e) y Festival will take place on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at
the Palo Alto Elks Lodge (4249 El Camino Real). Since its inaugural pour in 2023, the festival has established itself as the Peninsula’s definitive gathering for connoisseurs and casual fans alike. The event operates as a dynamic showcase, offering dedicated table space for local, national, and international whiskey vendors, distributors, and distilleries to present their finest expressions and their unique stories directly to consumers. “We are incredibly proud of the community we’ve built over the last three years in San Carlos, but the demand has simply outpaced our original footprint,” said Lou Martinez, the Founder of the Silicon Valley Whisk(e)y Festival.
General Admission and VIP packages are available now. VIP guests will enjoy early entry at 2:00 PM, access to an exclusive outdoor VIP Lounge hosted by their official retail partner, Silicon Valley Fine Wine & Spirits, a select food menu, personalized gifts, and rare, top-tier whiskey expressions.
“Moving to the Palo Alto Elks Lodge allows us to grow our capacity, elevate the overall guest experience, and provide our distilling partners with an even grander stage to showcase their craft, in the heart of its namesake. This year is all about bridging the rich traditions of whiskey, with the vibrant, innovative energy of Silicon Valley.”
Follow the festival on Instagram at @ siliconvalleywhiskeyfestival for event updates, vendor announcements, and behind-the-scenes coverage.
The 2026 festival will feature an expansive tasting floor, live music, and unique networking opportunities. Attendees will be encouraged to enhance their festival journey using The Whisk(e)y Wanderer mobile app, bringing a gamified, modern edge to the traditional tasting experience. This will allow the guests to find, track, and rate their favorite pours at the festival.
Grab your tickets now and get ready for a day of sipping and savoring the finest whiskey selections!

CORPUS –––––– Corpus’ purchases as sheriff
ing into Corpus and her former chief of staff Victor Aenlle since the county released a 400-page report by retired Judge LaDoris Cordell, who was hired to look into HR complaints about Aenlle. Cordell’s report found that Corpus and Aenlle engaged in retaliation, intimidation, nepotism and had conflicts of interest. Cordell’s reaction Cordell said she has the utmost respect for Wagstaffe. “Still, I am puzzled why he has declined to prosecute Christina Corpus for her arrest of Carlos Tapia for felony grand theft and felony timecard fraud, an arrest that Wagstaffe deterCORDELL mined was improper. Specifically, he concluded that no crimes had been committed, there was no monetary loss, and that Tapia ‘should not have been arrested.’ I’m left scratching my head and concerned about what message this decision sends to the rank-and-file,” Cordell said in an email to the Post. No charges for Aenlle Wagstaffe also said his office is not pursuing any charges against Aenlle, who allegedly had an “intimate relationship” with Corpus and was elevated to the top of her office. Corpus was removed from office after a 10-day hearing with retired Judge James Emerson, who recommended supervisors fire her for nepotism in hiring Aenlle and illegally arresting Tapia. Emerson also found that Corpus retaliated against Capt. Brian Philip for transferring him to the jail after he refused to investigate Sgt. Javier Acosta, the brother of sergeants’ union president Hector Acosta.

District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said his office looked into the multiple controversies that surrounded ex-sheriff Christina Corpus, including allegations that she misused public money. Here’s a look at some of the things that Corpus bought while she was sheriff. • A conference table worth $74,000. The 22-foot by 10-foot table includes 12 “cooling fans” in the legs and 10 “lockable access doors.” • Ice cream machines for jail employees costing $18,000, • Massage chairs, two for $6,750 each, • ‘Resilience’ training for supervisors and managers where each instructor was paid $14,000 for three days and the hotels, travel, flights, rental car and incidentals for the trainers cost $7,760 Corpus also signed a $35,687 monthly lease in August 2023 to convert a building at 690 Broadway in Redwood City into a daycare and substation. But the plans were halted a year later, and the building remains vacant. Under Corpus’ watch, the sheriff’s office depletjury’s four “accusations” that could bar her from ever holding public office again, is still going on. The civil grand jury has filed four “accusations” against Corpus for arresting Tapia, reassigning Philip, failing to disclose her close relationship with Aenlle, and firing Assistant Sheriff Ryan Monaghan after he spoke with Cordell. Wagstaffe previously told the Post that as long as Corpus continues to fight the removal efforts from the supervisors, then he will keep the civil grand jury case open. The civil grand jury has the power to remove an elected office holder such as the sheriff. A civil grand jury is a group of 19 citizens who act as a watchdog

The sheriff's office had used the majority of its $324 million budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year, Supervisor Jackie Speier said at the time. That led to Speier spearheading a policy that all county purchases over $100,000 be reported quarterly to the Board of Supervisors. of local government. Members can volunteer to join and serve on the jury for a year. The grand jury's accusation is prosecuted like a criminal trial, with a new jury of 12 that must reach a unanimous guilty verdict, beyond a reasonable doubt. Complaints started soon Not long after Corpus took office in January 2023, employees complained that she hired Aenlle. Corpus allegedly made racist and anti-gay remarks, and seven inmates died in the jail while she was sheriff. Cordell found that Corpus and Aenlle had an “intimate relationship” — he bought her $1,200 Louboutin boots and $11,000 diamond earrings, took her to

Aenlle allegedly berated employees, made captains report to him directly and inserted himself into investigations. “This relationship has led Sheriff Corpus to relinquish control of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office to Aenlle, someone who has far more experience as a Coldwell Banker associate real estate broker than he has in law enforcement,” Cordell wrote in her report. The Post reached out to Tapia and Philip’s attorneys but did not receive a response in time for publication.
