A Tesla plowed into an apartment in south Palo Alto yesterday. The driver was trying to make a U-turn when the car accelerated forward for no apparent reason, Lt. Craig Lee said in an email. A resident inside the apartment at 4157 Byron St. had a minor injury from the debris, Lee said. The driver wasn’t injured, and impairment wasn’t a factor, Lee said. The crash was reported just before 2 p.m., and a tow truck driver pulled the car out from the building 45 minutes later. Battalion Chief Ryan Stoddard said a building inspector will check the structure, and firefighters will shore the building with wood as necessary.

Football legend Mike Ditka dies at age 86 Mike Ditka, who personified the toughness and grit of Chicago in a Hall of Fame career as a player and coach of the Bears and the leader of arguably the most dominant team in NFL history, has died. He was 86. Ditka’s family announced his death yesterday in a statement. “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, DITKA Mike Ditka,” the family said. “While the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl XX championship team, we knew him as the heart of our family. Mike will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever.” Nicknamed “Iron Mike” as a player, Ditka helped revolutionize the tight
end position and in 1988 was the first to play at the spot to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He then moved to the sidelines and later took over as Chicago’s coach. His 1985 team featured one of the game’s most dominant defenses ever. It also had enough outsized personalities to record a rap video, “The Super Bowl Shuffle,” and back up their boasting in the championship game three months later.

Two candidates to be trusted with our students’ future. QUALIFICATIONS MATTER
Academic Excellence:
Students First:
- They believe schools should deliver a world-class educational experience to all students suited to their capabilities and interests.
- They’re independent from special interests, with a proven track record of advocating for students and the community to the school board.
- They stand for honors courses and against de-laning—a policy teachers warn harms all students by preventing level-appropriate instruction and that 95% of the community rejects. - Their opponent supports the district’s elimination of honors courses like Honors Biology, and favors de-laning.
- Their opponent is supported by a litany of special interests such as the unions and has publicly advocated in writing for Don Austin who bullied students and families.
Proven Board & Management Experience:
Integrity and Transparency:
- Extensive experience managing budgets and large diverse teams.
- Have a well documented history of advocating on behalf of parents and students for more transparency and more checks and balances.
- John has managed multinational teams in the thousands and budgets well in excess of PAUSD’s $400M a year budget; Avery co-founded Shazam. - Their opponent has no relevant experience.
- Their opponent, a PAUSD instructional aide, used district resources and staff, and issued school credit to students for campaign work—in direct conflict with state laws and district policies.

A significant portion of his life was spent working for justice and equality. He touched many people by the way he lived his life and how he cared for people. Many described him as a hard worker, dedicated with a tremendous Irish gift of gab. When he wasn’t immersed in developing housing for the poor, he loved reading, listening to good music, playing his guitar and entertaining people with his jokes and stories. During the final decades of his life he faced physical trials and challenges but continued to keep the flame of hope and faith alive. He will be deeply missed by many.

"Measure D is an overreach, weakens our representative democracy, and seriously disrupts the normal operations of Los Altos city government, including requiring an expensive election each time the city needs to make routine improvements to the downtown parking plazas. It is poorly drafted and potentially creates a conflict with state housing laws, which would expose the city to legal challenges and lawsuits costing Los Altos taxpayers thousands of dollars. I recommend Los Altos residents vote NO on Measure D." - Neysa Fligor, Santa Clara County Assessor* "I oppose Measure D because passing it will delay the development of affordable housing and harm our local schools. Affordable housing is needed to hire and retain the amazing teachers that make LASD and MVLA destination districts. Not to mention, affordable housing makes it easier for families of all income levels to move into and remain here." - Jessica Speiser, VP SCC Board of Education*

you stupid old crone’ A Marin County Superior Court judge has granted a restraining order against Tamalpais Union High School District trustee Kevin Saavedra, barring him from contacting or approaching a district parent who said he had harassed her for nearly a year. Saavedra, a two-term incumbent seeking reelection in November, used his district-issued email last year to tell the woman, Ina Gotlieb, to “go f--- yourself you stupid old crone.” According to the restraining order, he continued the harassment, by emailing her that he was “asking your neighbors about you” and using his campaign email to tell her she was a “s--- person.” Judge Mark Talamantes seemed incredulous that Saavedra had used his district email to send profane messages to Gotlieb.
“You used district email to send that to a parent whose child goes to the Tam schools?” the judge said. “You’re humiliating a parent whose child goes to your school? I don’t want a parent to be publicly shamed.” Saavedra said he was responding to a critical email that Gotlieb had sent to board President Cynthia Roenisch, for which Gotlieb later apologized. Saavedra said during the 30-minute hearing that he was frustrated by what he described as public criticism and a lack of civility toward board members. “Didn’t you sign up for that?” Talamantes said. Saavedra said Gotlieb’s message to Roenisch was the “kind of behavior (that) will drive people away from running for public office. But he added that the judge “is the decider.”

RVs ––––––
Lobster Lover
MONDAY
Councilman Keith Reckdahl said at an Aug. 24 meeting. So council on Oct. 19 will consider banning RVs on any street within 100 feet of a home and expanding the hours from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. At the same time, the city is working to permit around 40 RVs on Embarcadero Road and Coyote Hill Road starting next year. The roads can fit less than half of the city’s 130 RVs. Many residents, council candidates and business owners have called for a citywide ban. Problems for stores Chamber of Commerce CEO Charlie Weidanz said RV dwellers are creating blind spots, taking away customer parking, stealing utilities and littering. “Palo Alto’s small businesses cannot continue to operate under these conditions,” he told council. City Attorney Chris Jensen said ongoing lawsuits create legal uncertainty, and there’s no definitive law that says what Palo Alto can do. Cities that have successfully regulated RV dwellers, like San Francisco, have made help available to transition them out of RVs, Jensen said. “So it looks like you’re trying to solve the problem rather than target people,” Jensen told council.

projects involving county money. Mercurio was hired in 2024 by the San Mateo County Event Center, a facility that hosts large events like the San Mateo County Fair. He was hired to oversee three construction projects, each involving $1 million in funding from county tax dollars. Mercurio directed construction contracts to McLennan, his childhood friend, according to the District Attorney’s Office. McLennan allegedly then gave a portion of the contract money back to Mercurio in a kickback scheme. The suspected embezzlement came to light when one of the construction companies for the projects reported to

the county that it was not getting paid, prosecutors said. After two weeks of going over evidence, a grand jury indicted the two men and they were both arrested. The charges were filed and the pair each pleaded not guilty to all charges at Thursday’s arraignment. Mercurio and McLennan remain in custody on $750,000 bail each. Brian Getz, Mercurio’s attorney, said he is confident in Mercurio’s innocence. Despite living in Vacaville now, Mercurio has lived in San Mateo County almost his entire life, according to Getz. “James Mercurio has a solid record of community service and was a successful executive with the San Francisco 49ers for 30 years,” Getz said. “He’s never been convicted on any crime. He’s a grandfather and a father who lived almost his whole life in San Mateo ... I have every confidence in James Mercurio as a person and as a litigant.” McLennan’s attorney did not respond to a request for comment. The pair are scheduled to return to court Monday to set pretrial dates. Motions from the defendants to lower their bail amounts will also be heard.
Fewer people think college is important Only 31% of respondents in a new Gallup poll said a college education is “very important,” a four-percentage-point drop from last year and the lowest number since the question was first asked in 1978. As recently as 2013, 70% of American adults said college was very important. On the flip side, the percentage of Americans who say a college education is “not too important” has grown from 6% in 2013 to 29% today, while the percentage saying it is “fairly important” has risen from 23% to 39%. Although previous polling shows most Americans still want their children to pursue a college degree, they say colleges are doing a terrible job of keeping costs down.

taxes to repay.
Costly decisions The California Taxpayers Association has counted 273 such measures that, if all passed, would levy $3 billion a year in direct taxes on retail sales and property, and sanction $19.5 billion in bonds, with interest costs of more than $1 billion a year. The largest tax measure asks voters in San Francisco and four other counties to hike sales taxes by nearly $1 billion a year to bolster public transit services. In the last decade, a flurry of local sales tax measures has raised rates to over 11% in some jurisdictions. The biennial deluge of local tax and bond measures draws heavy campaign spending by proponents and opponents and some questionable gamesmanship by the local agencies that propose them. ‘Information’ or advocacy?
