Mystery buyer eyes Sunset BY NORAH SHEPPARD-HUTCHINS Daily Post Staff Writer
There may be a potential buyer of the 80 Willow Road property in Menlo Park, Councilman Drew Combs said yesterday. Over the last several weeks, Combs and Mayor Betsy Nash have been involved in discussions with the potential buyer, Combs said in an interview with

ATTEMPTED TAKEOVER: Passengers on a plane from Dubai to Tel Aviv say they wrestled with the copilot who stabbed the captain as the plane dove sharply before making an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Aviation experts are marveling that the plane didn’t crash. The passengers arrived in Israel on another FlyDubai flight yesterday.
Palo Alto City Council candidates have varying opinions on how to address 150 RV dwellers living on city streets. “That is the top issue,” Councilman Ed Lauing said in an interview. Lauing and Planning Commissioner Bryna Chang want the city to take on more legal risk by putting limits on RV dwellers. Lauing said the city could put signs at the entrance to the city to ban RVs without a parking permit. Council has already voted to permit around 40 RVs at the edges of the city, on Embarcadero Road and Coyote Hill Road. “That covers what I feel like we should, [See RVs, page 22]
GENERALS CUT: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is announcing some major changes to the U.S. military in what he calls his “State of the Force” address. They include establishing a new drone command and cutting 20% of the nation’s generals and admirals. Hegseth also says the Defense Department will create an Office of Religious Affairs and plans to build a new base for the first time in 40 years.

The bipartisan bill aims to prevent China’s auto industry from gaining a foothold in the U.S. market. Patricia Applegate
¢ December 27, 1952 – August 10, 2026 ¢ Patricia Kiernan “PK” Applegate, née Patricia Kiernan, died on August 10, 2026, in Santa Monica, California. She was born on December 27, 1952, in Malden, Massachusetts. Born and raised in Malden, Patty spent her early years at the family home on Gordon Street. Her father was a lifelong fireman with the Medford Fire Department in Massachusetts, and her mother worked as an administrative assistant for a local doctor. She attended Beebe Junior High School and went on to Malden High School, where she graduated as valedictorian in 1970.

Patty’s academic accomplishments continued at Colgate University, where she graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1974. She later earned a Master’s in Finance from New York University in 1978. Her studies also reflected a lasting interest in French literature, an interest that remained an important part of her life for many years. After receiving her master’s degree from NYU in 1978, Patty began her professional career in New York City as a CPA with Peat Marwick Mitchell, where she specialized in expatriate taxation. In 1984, she left the firm and established a sole practice serving individuals in the Bay Area. Her work reflected the strong academic foundation and professional discipline that marked her life from an early age. Patty was the mother of two daughters, Gabby and Sofie, both of whom live in Southern California. Sofie and Gabby spent their early years in the Bay Area and attended Trinity School in Menlo Park. They later attended middle school in Rancho Santa Fe, California, and continued their education at Torrey Pines and Concord Academy in Los Angeles. Gabby graduated from Syracuse University, and Sofie attended Mills College in Oakland. A central part of Patty’s life was the support she gave to her daughters. She was an avid supporter of their equestrian activities and could often be found cheering them on at local and national competitions. She loved her daughters passionately, and that devotion was a defining part of her life. Patty also maintained a lifelong love of France and French culture. A self-described Francophile, she returned to France many times over the years to visit and live with her adopted family, Josette and Gile Maillet. That connection grew from her college studies in French literature and remained an enduring thread throughout her life. She also had two sisters, Jeannie and Nancy, both of whom died before her. Her brother, John, survives her and works for Citgo in Texas. Patricia Kiernan “PK” Applegate will be remembered in the many places that shaped her life: Malden, where her gifts first became evident; New York, where her professional career began; the Bay Area, where she built her own practice; and California, where much of her family life centered. Her life was marked by scholarship, professional accomplishment, steadfast support for her daughters, and a lasting attachment to the people and places she held close.

Crash victims identified WE’LL FIX IT! BY NORAH SHEPPARDHUTCHINS Daily Post Staff Writer
Two people who died in an East Palo Alto car crash were Bobby McGee, 69, of Menlo Park, and Carolyn Cupil, 63, of Belmont, the coroner’s office said yesterday. McGee was driving a minivan when he crashed into six vehicles on Tuesday. He died at the scene of
the crash, which happened around 8:30 a.m. near Bay Road and University Avenue. Cupil, who was a passenger of the minivan, was taken to the hospital where she later died. McGee’s sister, Dorothy Faye McGee, told KTVU yesterday that he was suffering from heart failure and most likely had a medical emergency while driving.
“I guess he had a heart attack, because they said his feet were on the pedal when they got him out the car,” Dorothy McGee said in a KTVU interview. At least three other people sustained injuries, however none were reported as life threatening, according to San Mateo County sheriff’s spokeswoman Gretchen Spiker.

Menlo Park council members said they do not want to reduce the parking requirement or the number of subsidized homes to close finance gaps in three proposals to develop housing on city-owned parking lots. Council discussed potential ways to close gaps found in a finance report ranging from $19 million to $45 million for three affordable housing development proposals on city-owned parking lots at a Tuesday council meeting. Council members Jeff Schmidt, Cecilia Taylor and Jennifer Wise said they would like to take both options off the table. “I looked at the affordable housing as a way to reduce the funding and parking gap, and that felt weird to me. I mean we still may need to juggle our affordable housing numbers to hit our overall goals, which I think is totally relevant. But to use it to save costs for a developer to then pay for more parking felt weird,” Schmidt said. Mayor Betsy Nash said she would like to explore charging for parking, but making it so business owners do not have to pay. Other ideas include a sales tax measure to help pay for new parking garages or an annual fee for downtown business and property owners to fund parking. Combs open-minded Councilman Drew Combs said he would not like to take any of the options off the table yet. However, Combs said some of the options seem unrealistic, including charging for parking, which he’s unsure if downtown is the right place to test out. The report came just weeks before voters on Nov. 3 decide the fate of Measure P, a citizen initiative that would require the city to get voter approv-
al before developing any of its eight downtown parking lots. When the city sought proposals for housing on downtown parking plazas 1, 2 and 3, it asked developers to include plans for replacing the 556 parking spaces now there. Menlo Park said the parking needed to be replaced without financial help from the city. “Even through the RFP (proposal request) process, we discouraged folks from applying if they did not feel that they could present a project that replaced all of the parking,” Combs said in an interview with the Post.
Public’s thoughts Thirty people spoke during public comment, both in support of the housing developments and against. “Speaking for the hundreds of people who will be out of a job, the faces who don’t know how to speak their fears, people are already frustrated with traffic and parking here. I’ve already lost clients because of the traffic. We survived Covid in 2020, but we won’t survive this,” Han Li, an owner of a business on one of the parking lots, said in opposition to the proposed housing. In contrast, John McKenna, a member of the Environmental Quality Commission, said the proposed housing in downtown can actually help businesses. “Inclusive housing brings more people and more customers, which I believe is good for business. A diverse population creates more opportunity for diverse businesses,” McKenna said. The three housing proposals, unveiled in December, came from Alliant Communities, Presidio Bay Ventures, and Related California in partnership with Alta Housing. The homes would have different affordability levels, priced for people making 15% to 80% of the area median income. The area median income in 2025 was $130,600 for a single person and $186,600 for a family of four.

‘Digger’ a climate-era ‘Dr Strangelove’ BY JAKE COYLE
Associated Press Writer
Just as the fate of the world hangs in the balance in “Digger,” Alejandro G. Inarritu’s over-the-top, climate-disaster satire teeters on the brink. It’s an audacious plate-spinning act, juggling exaggerated farce, sober anxieties and an oil-mad Tom Cruise. Inarritu, an art-house showman, has always delighted in a grandiosity of vision: the long-take backstage circus of “Birdman,” the rugged vistas of “The Revenant,” the metaphysical musings of “Bardo.” You come to an Inarritu movie for swagger, not subtlety. And “Digger,” — a “Dr. Strangelove” for the climate change era — isn’t trying to mince words. Its desire to make a statement and shake up its audience may be unlikely to find broad critical favor. But there are times to go big. Can you dig it? Oil tycoon In the movie’s opening moments, Digger Rockwell (Cruise) wakes up in his lavish, wood-paneled home surrounded by antlers, taxidermy and polar bear rugs. With him in bed is his cherished cat, a barely-still-alive creature, portrayed as an animatronic puppet that looks more like Annette than a real feline. The suggestion is not only
steering toward Europe in what’s predicted to cause catastrophic destruction. Soon, the not-so-dissimilar U.S. President Compson (John Goodman) and his cabinet are at Digger’s house, needing a plan. Compson pronounces it “a pickle.” The ensuing drama is more about establishing a narrative rather than saving Europe. There’s a second layer to this, though, running alongside. The movie as we experience it is, in fact, a play being staged, we learn early on. But the structure of “Digger” opens the movie up to questions about the value of satire and limits of fiction. It also leads the movie to a darkly fateful CHERISHED CAT — Ross Hatt, left, and Tom Cruise in “Digger.” Warner Bros. place, far beyond fossil fuel debate. in city parks or parking garages. Veenker said she wants to focus on helping RV dwellers who live or work in Palo Alto, and she’s hoping the city can find a way to verify their ties to the city. She wants larger employers like Stanford and Google to step up and provide parking for their employees living in RVs.
Lawsuit precedence Lauing pointed to a LAUING lawsuit in Sebastopol, where four disabled RV dwellers sued the city in October 2022 after council restricted when and where they could park. RV dwellers said they live in RVs out of necessity, and they’re being targeted with tickets and towing. The city argued its RV restrictions were about health and safety concerns and complaints about a lack of parking near businesses. Federal Judge Kandis Westmore sided with Sebastopol on Nov. 22, 2024, finding the city’s restrictions served a legitimate government purpose. The RV dwellers and the nonprofits have appealed Westmore’s ruling. “The legal risk is real, and I think we should step up and take a bit more legal risk than we have before,” Lauing said.
Duck pond parking Dr. Gary Gechlik said he wants to create an RV park at the duck pond in the Baylands, charging $20 a night and providing private security. “That area is safe. GECHLIK We have plenty of land, plenty of parking. Instead of having these RVs scattered around town, we could finally monitor them,” he said.

Ex-deputy gets Newsom vetoes fines for jail for fraud secret glasses recordings A former San Mateo County sheriff’s deputy has been sentenced to five months in jail after taking a plea deal to felony workers’ compensation fraud charges, prosecutors said. Jorden Faatiga, 35, of Patterson, pleaded no contest in April to felony workers’ compensation fraud and filing a false document and on Tuesday was sentenced to jail starting on Jan. 9, along with two years’ probation and paying restitution of more than $61,000 to the county, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors said Faatiga reported an injury to his right elbow suffered while on duty and filed a workers’ compensation claim, then received benefits while working a modified role. However, investigators found surveillance footage that showed Faatiga lifting weights, driving and engaging in intense gym workouts in contradiction to the restrictions he reported to his treating physician, and regularly misrepresented the symptoms of his injury to doctors, according to the DA’s Office. Following his conviction, he was deemed ineligible by the state Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training to serve as a law enforcement officer in California.

Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed legislation yesterday that would have penalized Californians for using smart glasses to record people without their permission in changing rooms, doctor’s offices and other spaces people generally consider private. The legislation also would have required companies making smart glasses or other wearable devices, starting in 2028, to include a light or some other feature that indicates that the person is video or audio recording. It would have banned the sale of technology designed to help people conceal a recording light or sound on a smart device. Newsom wrote in a letter explaining his decision that the bill’s definition of a wearable recording device was too broad. He noted that the state already bars people from recording someone without their consent in spaces generally considered private. Meta Ray-Bans, smart glasses that were rolled out in 2021, have especially grown in popularity, with more than 7 million of the AI-powered devices being sold last year. State Sen. Eloise Gomez Reyes, who wrote the bill, said it would’ve helped the state respond to the technology’s rapid growth.
The bill would have been the first of its kind in the nation and built upon the state’s extensive privacy protections. California is one of about a dozen states that already requires both parties’ consent before a conversation can be recorded via audio or video. Reyes’ proposal was designed to clarify that it applied to smart glasses and make it easier for someone to tell when those devices are recording. Any person who violated the bill by secretly recording someone would have faced prison time or fines of up to $1,500. A company that made devices that didn’t comply with the bill would’ve faced fines up to $2,500. Tech opposed But TechNet, a group of executives from companies including Meta, Google and Amazon, said the legislation, known as SB1130, would have been unfair to businesses and customers. “California already has extensive laws governing unlawful recording, and as currently written, SB1130 is not the right approach to addressing these concerns,” TechNet Executive Director Robert Boykin said.
