A woman who allegedly ran over her ex-boyfriend with her car in Mountain View is taking a plea deal for assault with a deadly weapon, court records show.

Alexis McBride, 26, of Dublin faces up to four years in prison and will be sentenced on Feb. 2.

Margaret Marietta Pepple ¢ April 19, 1928 – Dec. 19, 2025 ¢ Margaret Pepple, 97, passed away on December 19, 2025, at home with her children at her side in Palo Alto, California.

Margaret was born April 19, 1928, in Odin, Illinois, the eldest of two children, to Elester “Leck” Harville and Martha (VanSant) Harville. She attended Odin School 1st grade through high school, where she graduated twice! She graduated from 11th grade, then the school district added 12th grade so she went one more year and graduated again.

Margaret went on to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale where she met her future husband, Wayne, whom she married March 27, 1949.

Margaret and Wayne farmed for a short time in Illinois before moving across the country a couple of times due to Wayne’s military service. They moved back to Illinois briefly, and finally settled down in Palo Alto, CA. They never lost their ties to Illinois, though. In retirement they enjoyed splitting their time between their house in Palo Alto and Margaret’s beloved childhood home in Odin.

Margaret was always busy her whole life. She spent a summer working in a dress factory in a nearby town as a teenager, where she honed her sewing skills. While Wayne was serving in the Marines, she worked in retail in San Diego and North Carolina. She drove a van transporting students home from Castilleja girls’ school in Palo Alto, volunteered at a local food pantry, worked in a daycare center, and was a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a highly skilled seamstress, sewing everything from her wedding dress to placemats for every holiday or season, pillows, decorative items, and dresses for her daughters and herself. Her culinary skills were greatly appreciated by her family and friends. She also had a musical talent that she passed down to her children. Besides playing the piano, she was a member of a hand bell choir well into her 90’s.

Travel was something that was ingrained in her DNA. Her parents always said her middle name should have been Go because if anyone mentioned going somewhere, Margaret would beat them to the car, ready to go, too. She was always ready to head out on an adventure or just a trip to a local park. As soon as she got home, she was plotting her next outing. She enjoyed many travels throughout her life, visiting all 50 states, many more than once. She also visited many countries, including England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Australia. If you wanted her to stay in one place, you would have had to tie her down somehow.

Margaret was devoted to her church, where she was a long-time member. She served in many capacities, such as secretary, held leadership roles in membership, and organized activities for the members of the church. She was an elder for many years, visiting those who were sick and couldn’t attend church, taking them communion, serving at the communion table, and numerous other duties.

Margaret spent countless hours volunteering for anything and everything that needed to be done. She didn’t see her work at the church as a duty, though, but as a privilege.

Margaret is predeceased by her husband of 76 years, Wayne, her parents, her brother, Leonard Harville, her many aunts and uncles, and numerous friends. She is dearly missed by her children, Merriam (Bob) Hanley, Tehachapi, CA; Monica Pepple, Bloomington, IL; and Loren Pepple, Odin, IL; as well as numerous other family and friends. A funeral service will be held 11am, January 3rd, 2026, at Odin Christian Church with burial to follow at the Peaceful Valley Cemetery in Odin, Illinois. In lieu of flowers and to honor Margaret’s memory, the family suggests donations to a church or charity of your choice.

Trump: Venezuela to offer oil to U.S. President Trump said yesterday that Venezuela would be providing 30 million to 50 million barrels of oil to the U.S., and he pledged to use proceeds from the sale “to benefit the people” of both countries.

The White House is organizing a meeting Friday with U.S. oil company executives to discuss Venezuela, which the Trump administration has been pressuring to open its vast-butstruggling oil industry more widely to American investment and know-how.

Representatives of Exxon, Chevron and ConocoPhillips are expected to attend the White House meeting, according to a person familiar with the matter who requested anonymity to discuss the plans.

Raid death toll Earlier yesterday, officials in Caracas announced that at least 24 Venezuelan security officers were killed in the dead-of-night U.S. military operation to capture Nicolas Maduro and spirit him to the United States to face drug charges. And the country’s acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, pushed back on Trump, who earlier this week warned she’d face an outcome worse than Maduro’s if she does not “do what’s right” and overhaul Venezuela into a country that aligns with U.S. interests, including by granting access to American energy companies.

Future of Venezuelan oil With oil trading at roughly $56 a barrel, the transaction Trump announced late yesterday could be worth as much as $2.8 billion. The U.S. goes through an average of roughly 20 million barrels a day of oil and related products, so Venezuela’s transfer would be the equivalent of as much as two and a half days of supply, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Despite Venezuela having the world’s largest proven crude oil reserves, it only produces on average about one million barrels day, significantly below the U.S. average daily production of 13.9 million barrels a day during October.

The press office for Venezuela’s government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Leadership roles shuffled on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors yesterday as Noelia Corzo was chosen to be president and Ray Mueller as vice president.

The board chambers were packed for the reorganization ceremony, with dozens of leaders from various city councils across the county and county officials in attendance, including District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe and Sheriff Ken Binder.

Rotating seat Every year, the board chooses a new president and vice president. Tuesday’s reorganization followed a formal procedure that the board adopted in 2023, in which appointments rotate by supervisorial district instead of seniority.

Corzo, who was vice president in 2025, was next in the rotation to become president after Supervisor David Canepa was president last year. Muel-

McDonald’s sued over McRib meat

A group of consumers have filed a class-action lawsuit against McDonald’s, claiming the McRib sandwich doesn’t contain any actual pork rib meat, and instead is comprised from ground-up portions of lower-grade pork products.

In the complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, plaintiffs Peter Le and three others say the name “McRib” is a “deliberate sleight of hand” and by branding it as such, the fast food chain deceives reasonable consumers, who believe the product “will include at least some meaningful quantity of actual pork rib meat, which commands a premium price on the market.”

“The McRib is among the most expensive individual menu items at McDonald’s, often priced higher than burgers made with 100% beef patties,” said the plaintiffs. “For example, during the

McRib’s spurt of availability in December 2024, McDonald’s sold the McRib at an average price of $5.63 across the country, with prices reaching up to $7.89 at some locations. During that same timeframe, McDonald’s Big Mac was sold at an average price of $5.29.”

A road near Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara is closing starting Monday as part of safety and security measures associated with Super Bowl LX taking place there next month.

Stars and Stripes Drive, which connects to the Great America train station at Tasman Drive and Lafayette Street, will be closed from Monday until Feb.

Menlo Park Menorah Lighting First-of-Its-Kind Hanukkah Celebration Sends Powerful Message It was less than 24 hours after the news of a horrifying attack at a similar Menorah lighting in Sydney’s Bondi Beach reverberated around the globe when Menlo Park’s Jewish community gathered in Fremont Park to light the Menorah. Together, those assembled had the victims across the ocean in mind and prayed for them to find healing and comfort. The message of the Menorah has always been the resilience of light, and its message could not have been more relevant for a day which bore such difficult news.

Founded a little over a year ago by Rabbi Dovid and Esty Geisinksy, who moved from Brooklyn, NY with their daughter Luba, Chabad is Menlo Park’s first Jewish center.

In the short times since its founding, Menlo Chabad has bolstered the community through a diverse lineup of events and programming, exemplifying the Menlo Park Jewish community’s recent growth. With more than 200 attendees, the Menorah lighting represents the largest Jewish event held to date in the city, further testifying to the development and vibrancy of Menlo Park’s Jewish community.

Hanukkah foods, drifted through the park. To top it all off, the singular candle marking Hanukkah’s first night shone brightly, a beacon of hope in a sea of uncertainty.

In 2019, first-year Gov. Gavin Newsom inherited a state flush with cash.

With a $21.4 billion budget surplus to play with, an ambitious Newsom invested billions in affordable housing, child care and health care expansion while paying down the state’s debt and shoring up reserves.

The next governor won’t be that lucky.

When Newsom unveils his last spending plan as governor Friday, he will do so with the spectre of a projected $18 billion deficit — the result of the state’s fast-growing spending, federal funding losses and heightened economic uncertainties under President Donald Trump’s administration.

The deficit could balloon to $35 billion annually in the next few years if state leaders don’t pursue long-term solutions, namely making sustainable revenue increases or cutting spending, according to the Legislative Analyst’s Office, the nonpartisan fiscal adviser to lawmakers.

But neither will be appealing options to Newsom and legislative leaders this year. They have repeatedly resisted increasing taxes on average Californians and high-income earners alike — a politically dicey pitch to make in a state with high tax rates and increasing revenue. Spending cuts are equally painful to swallow, especially for Democrats running for re-election in November who have fought to expand services, such as Medi-Cal, that may now be rolled back.

For Newsom, a lame-duck governor with presidential aspirations, there is even less incentive to address the state’s long-term budget health through major policy changes, political strategists say. But how Newsom tackles the structural deficit will almost certainly have implications for his expected presidential bid.

Fourth year of deficits It’s the fourth consecutive year in Newsom’s tenure that the state is projecting a deficit even as revenue grows.

In the past, state Democratic leaders resorted to temporary fixes such as internal borrowing, deferring payments, one-time cuts and drawing from California’s rainy day fund to avoid cutting into the social safety net.

But that cushion is deflating: The state’s reserve stands at $14 billion, half its peak balance, after two years of withdrawals. State leaders have borrowed more than $20 billion from other state funds, debts that will come due in later years. Continuing to rely on those options would leave the state “undeniably less prepared” for an economic downturn, the LAO warned.

More health care cuts to come?

Newsom has not indicated whether he’ll consider cuts to Medi-Cal, the state’s primary health insurance program for low-income residents. But as the state’s most expensive program, it is an attractive target. More than half of the $200 billion program’s funding comes from the federal govern-

ment. Last year, as Newsom and legislators scrambled to close a $12 billion budget gap, they froze new Medi-Cal enrollment for undocumented immigrants, charged immigrant enrollees a $30 monthly premium and delayed cutting certain benefits. The cost of Medi-Cal has been rising faster than expected, forcing the state Legislature to allocate $6.2 billion midyear to prevent a shortfall.

The decision was contentious, with some health care advocates and Democratic lawmakers slamming their leaders for creating a “two-tiered health care system” that deemed immigrants less worthy of quality coverage.

This year, Trump’s budget reduced the federal government’s share of funding to Medi-Cal, requiring the state to pay more to provide the same benefits.

California is projected to spend at least $1.3 billion more to implement that change, a figure that could reach $5 billion by fiscal year 2029-30, the LAO estimated.

Any cuts to Medi-Cal could bring political consequences for Democrats who often pride themselves on expanding social services. Rolling back Medi-Cal could hurt Newsom’s legacy, too, since it was under him that the state began offering Medi-Cal to immigrants.

State leaders could also walk back some of last year’s funding commitments in other areas. While state lawmakers negotiated $500 million for homelessness to counties and delayed it until next year, it is not guaranteed.

Newsom, who has blamed the state’s homelessness problem on local governments, could withhold the money.

Newsom also promised last year he’d reach a deal with Bay Area transit advocates over state funding to save the area’s transit net from collapsing.

But last month, in light of the budget shortfall, Newsom urged advocates to dip into previously allocated dollars to save the regional transit network, instead of a $750 million loan the advocates had requested.
