Elect Pete Dailey to the Valley Water board When voters in Palo Alto, Los Altos and Mountain View choose a representative for the Valley Water board, they deserve an effective leader who works collaboratively to protect local communities from flooding. Unfortunately, the tenure of incumbent Rebecca Eisenberg has been defined by toxic behavior, severe policy violations, and a shocking disregard for transparency and legal boundaries. To restore stability and effective representation, voters DAILEY should support Los Altos Councilman Pete Dailey.

Document theft The most damning indicator of Eisenberg’s unfitness for public office is her blatant and unlawful theft of confidential documents. In January 2024, Valley Water directors were permitted to view a sensitive, 2,000-page internal investigation regarding misconduct allegations against Eisenberg in a secure room. They were strictly informed that the files could not leave the premises. Disregarding these rules, surveillance photos captured Eisenberg grabbing the documents, carrying them to her vehicle, and driving away. This reckless theft forced Valley Water to file a lawsuit to retrieve its own property, costing taxpayers $143,694 in legal fees on top of the

The Post is going to make a number of recommendations for candidates and ballot measures in the next two weeks. Why would the Post — which prides itself on being fair, impartial and objective in its reporting — endorse candidates? The endorsements are presented on the opinion page and are in no way connected with the news stories found elsewhere in the newspaper. An endorsement is the opinion of the management of the newspaper and has no bearing on the manner

Beyond the document theft, the underlying investigation substantiated nine separate complaints against Eisenberg for discrimination and abusive conduct. Her history of making derogatory remarks toward colleagues — such as mocking Board

Constituents harmed Eisenberg’s combative behavior has directly harmed Palo Alto and its neighbors. Because she could not follow basic decorum, her colleagues stripped her of her committee assignments, including her role on the joint agency working to prevent flooding along San Francisquito Creek. As Dailey accurately pointed out, this dysfunction creates a state of “taxation without representation” for northern

county residents who are left without an effective voice on vital infrastructure committees. Northern Santa Clara County needs a serious, collaborative professional, and Pete Dailey fits the bill perfectly. He brings stable, proven government experience from the Los Altos City Council and a personal commitment to water safety stemming from witnessing devastating flooding during his youth. Dailey’s platform prioritizes critical regional needs: • Restoring effective teamwork to ensure proper flood protection along local waterways. • Holding AI data centers accountable by requiring them to report their water usage on a monthly basis. • Building housing for the homeless on available Valley Water land in cooperation with the county. Dailey has earned broad, trusted regional support, including endorsements from his fellow council members, Santa Clara County Supervisor Margaret Abe-Koga, and District Attorney Jeff Rosen. Valley Water manages a massive $811 million annual operating budget. It cannot afford to have its resources squandered on lawsuits, infighting and the erratic behavior of an incumbent who steals secure documents. It is time to restore integrity and focus to the board. Applaud Liccardo for his call for sanctions Congressman Sam Liccardo deserves high praise for his decisive action to protecting both our local community and our national security. By formally asking Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to investigate and sanction Russian businessman Vitaly Yusufov and his billionaire father, Igor Yusufov, Liccardo has stepped up exactly when his constituents needed him most. Vitaly Yusufov wants to build a 39-story skyscraper on the former Sunset magazine campus at 80 Willow Road in Menlo Park. Vitaly Yusufov is using money he inheritDave ed from his father — a Price former Russian energy minister with deep ties to sanctioned state enterprises like Gazprom and Rosneft. At a time when the United States is fundamentally opposed to Russia’s brutal war in Ukraine, it is intolerable that Kremlin-linked oil money can be freely laundered and stored in American commercial real estate.

National security threat Furthermore, as Liccardo rightly argued, planting an opaque, oligarch-backed project in the epicenter of America’s defense tech, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing sectors poses an unacceptable national security risk. Liccardo’s targeted appeal to Bessent demonstrates a pragmatic and urgent focus on the immediate threat to his district. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) should now follow Liccardo’s lead. You can help Liccardo’s letter is a good start toward sanctioning the Yusufovs. But if you have any clout in Washington

City Council, where’s the Cubberley appraisal?

On Oct. 5, a week from today, ballots for the November election will hit the mail. The city has put Measure J on the ballot, which asks people to raise the sales tax by a half cent to pay for improvements to Cubberley. City Council has agreed to use $65 million of the money to buy seven acres of the Cubberley Community Center campus from the Palo Alto Unified School District. A bank wouldn’t loan anyone $65 million to buy a piece of property without an appraisal. For months, this newspaper has been asking for the appraisal so the public can judge whether $65 million is a fair price. City Council has stubbornly refused to release the appraisal. And it doesn’t look like they’re going to release it before the election. There’s nothing about it on the agendas for the meetings tonight or on Oct. 5. Without the appraisal, it’s difficult for voters to make an intelligent choice on Measure J. Measure J has other flaws — such as no sunset date on the tax and deceptive wording on the ballot statement. But denying the public basic information like the appraisal is enough of a reason to vote “no.” Editor Dave Price’s column appears on Mondays.

The campaigns for and against Measure P, the initiative to stop the city’s plans to put public housing on downtown parking lots, have raised a combined $500,000. A “yes” would require voter approval for any attempt by the city to put public housing on the downtown parking plazas. It would also require a vote if the city attempted to sell, trade or lease the plazas, or built anything on them that would reduce parking. A “no” vote opposes voter approval for any city plan that would reduce parking capacity in the plazas. ‘No’ side leads in contributions The “no” side is ahead in fundraising. The “no” campaign, led by Menlo Park Neighbors and Small Business Owners for Affordable Homes, has raised over $300,000. Donors include two nonprofits, Grove Action Fund ($20,000), an advocacy organization led by Karen Grove, co-founder of the “No on Measure P” campaign, and MidPen Housing Corporation ($5,000), a housing developer in the Bay Area.
