SUMMIT CONCLUDES: President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up their high-stakes three-day summit in Washington with a tour of the National Archives. While the leaders displayed personal diplomacy and shared tea, the meetings yielded few major breakthroughs on long-standing trade and tech issues. Trump says the two will have three more meetings. HORMUZ PROPOSAL: Iran offered yesterday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume talks on its nuclear program in seven days if the United States lifts its naval blockade, waives sanctions on Iranian oil sales and observes a ceasefire that would include Lebanon.

Police are looking for a mountain lion that’s on the loose in Palo Alto. The first reports came in on Thursday, when two people reported spotting the big cat in Midtown near Middlefield Road and Colorado Avenue, police said. Yesterday, a mountain lion was spotted about four miles away on the 1600 block of Sand Hill Road, police said. Both times, neither animal control nor police were able to find the animal. While the mountain lion didn’t display aggressive behavior, “residents are encouraged to stay aware of their surroundings.” Residents should call 911 if they see the mountain lion, police said. A mountain lion was removed from a Redwood City backyard on June 15. In that case, Redwood City residents [See PUMA, page 26]

J
VOTERS OF PALO ALTO: DO NOT BE HUSTLED.
3700 MIDDLEFIELD ROAD, PALO ALTO
Don’t let the deceptive language of Measure J fool you. It does NOT set aside funds for developing Cubberley. Nor does it fund preparing for natural disasters, maintaining a safe, clean downtown or any of the other services listed in the Measure.
Organizer: Palo Alto Neighborhoods Moderator: Former Palo Alto City Councilmember Hillary Freeman
What it does—and all it does—is permanently raise the sales tax to 10.25%. Measure J would simply hand the revenue to City Hall—which already has a budget of $1.4 BILLION a year—to spend on anything it wants.
El Palo Alto Room, Mitchell Park Community Center
The event can also be viewed online at https://youtube.com/Themediacenter5. For more information, email Rebsanders@venturapaloalto.org
In a completely cynical act, the City used taxpayer dollars to poll residents and find out what we cared about, then used the results to try to manipulate us into approving Measure J’s permanent, unrestricted sales tax hike. Here’s documentation: The email below from City attorney Tim Shimizu to Mayor Vicki Veenker regarding the language in Measure J.

To finance the development of Cubberley, the City should propose a one-time Special Tax or Bond Measure. Either would ensure that the funds raised were spent on Cubberley and only Cubberley. However, if our free-spending City wants a permanent increase in the sales tax, the revenue from which it can dip into at will, it should explain why to voters. In the meantime:

CELEBRATING
40 YEARS!
A struggling Massachusetts lesbian bar that requires patrons to wear NK95 masks decided to drop the mask rule one night a week to increase business. Instead of attracting more customers, the change drew angry comments, calls for a boycott and even a person who hoped the place would be firebombed, the Boston Globe reported. The announcement Aug. 31 by the Last Ditch Bar was said in unusally affectionate language: “It is with love we inform our immunocompromised disabled divas we will be opening Saturday nights as mask optional.” Angry response Quickly, the bar’s Instagram announcement got hundreds of responses, including accusations that the change excluded disabled and immunocompromised customers who had regarded Last Ditch as one of the few nightlife spaces built around their needs. The Globe counted 442 comments on the announcement. One accused the bar of being “complicit in a mass disabling event.” Another wrote, “People like you kill disabled people in the name of your own leisure and convenience.” Last Ditch apologized two days later, saying it was sorry for the “passive and dismissive tone” of the announcement. That apology created another problem.
The graphic had been posted without alt text for visually impaired users, prompting criticism that a statement intended to address accessibility concerns was itself inaccessible.
How the bar got started Last Ditch opened in 2025 after three housemates set out to create a queer bar, performance venue and community space. Its house rules included allowing people without money to enter and welcoming the poor and homeless. Business was initially stronger, but attendance declined. The Globe reported that the owners eventually could not reliably pay themselves or the people working there. Two of the three founders had walked away from the business. One of the founders quit the business to join clown school. Jackie Matellian was the one left carrying the business. Matellian met with patrons earlier this month. The meeting took three hours. She told the group she had been living in her truck for six months while putting money into the business, working four jobs, and carrying responsibility for the $50,000 loan the founders had taken out to open Last Ditch. Critics remained unmoved. The Globe observed that business has continued to decline.

Oct. 27 deadline Oisin Heneghan with N17 Development sent a letter to the council stating that, under a warning from Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office, the city must approve the project by Oct. 27. Bonta’s office sent the city a letter on July 27, claiming the city improperly changed its reasons for rejecting Heneghan’s proposal for 665 apartments, a hotel, office space and a preschool across three towers, with the tallest reaching 461 feet. Both the letter from Bonta’s office and Heneghan cite Assembly Bill 712, which aims to punish cities that do not follow housing laws. “It is a mystery why the Attorney General, between the absurdity of the scale of this project and the nefarious background of the lead investor, why the Attorney General is so committed to driving this forward,” Burt said. Liccardo’s office did not respond to inquiries about next steps and an estimated timeline now that Liccardo requested sanctions, as of publication.

Back in Palo Alto, in March, police were on the lookout for a mountain lion as well. Back then, the big cat was spotted near Greene Middle School and later in the Old Palo Alto neighborhood. The mountain lion wasn’t caught that time around and no injuries were reported.

Senator alarmed by furries on airliners
Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., says an “alarming” number of pilots, flight attendants and air traffic controllers are furries — people who dress up like cartoon animals often for sexual gratification. The senator and former Auburn football coach brought up furries during a floor speech Wednesday about a rise in “gender confusion”
in the United States. Tuberville cited an April incident at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport where pilots were heard making meowing and barking noises over an air traffic control frequency. The FAA confirmed it was investigating the incident and noted that non-essential con-
versations are prohibited below 10,000 feet. The FAA says it hasn’t found any evidence that the pilots involved in the April incident were members of the furry community. But Tuberville claimed without evidence that an “alarming” number of pilots, flight attendants and air traffic controllers are furries.
“Lord, help us. It’s terrifying when you think about this,” Tuberville said. He questioned whether people would want a furry serving as their pilot. He called furry culture a mental illness, but furry fandom is not classified as a mental illness by any major psychiatric organizations.
