Boulder kills woman on 280 A boulder landed on Interstate 280 near Hillsborough yesterday during the dark of night, and an unsuspecting driver slammed into the rock and died. The collision happened at about 2 a.m. in the center median off the southbound lanes, just south of the Black Mountain Road/Hayne Road exit, CHP Officer Sophie Lu said.
Lu said officers were called to the scene at that time but could not find any sign of a collision because it was too dark. The vehicle was found down a ditch in the center median at about 7:30 a.m. after more calls were received. The woman, who Lu said was in her 30s, was the only occupant of the black Volkswagen Tiguan.

‘Thinker’ is gone Clerk says bring back our ‘celebrity’ BY BRADEN CARTWRIGHT Daily Post Staff Writer
The city of Los Altos has removed a statue of the Thinker from the Woodland Library, and a clerk wants to see the “local celebrity” come back. “Everyone, including staff, was expecting the Thinker to return home, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I’ve heard that the city may be planning to relocate our contemplative friend elsewhere, which would be a shame,” library clerk Joshua Ford said in an email. Ford said the Thinker was a hotspot for Pokemon GO, an app that uses a phone’s GPS and camera so people can catch virtual Pokemon in the real world. The statue is a replica of the ‘THE THINKER’ disappeared from his spot at the Woodland Library in Los Thinker created by the French sculp[See THINKER, page 18] Altos. Photo provided by Joshua Ford.

Opinion Liccardo should stop the skyscraper 6
Daily Post Monday, September 21, 2026
Email: letters@padailypost.com
Congressman Sam Liccardo needs to help his constituents with an urgent problem. Russian businessman Vitaly Yusufov plans to put up a 39-story skyscraper on the former Sunset magazine campus at the corner of Willow and Middlefield roads in Menlo Park. This would be the tallest building between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and it would cast a long shadow into the quiet neighborhoods of Palo Alto and Menlo Park. A loophole in state law called the Builder’s Remedy allows for this tall building that would normally violate local zoning codes. Here’s where Liccardo could hit a home run for his constituents.
Dave Price
Russian oil money It’s obvious that Yusufov has inherited his money from his father, former Russian Energy Minister Igor Yusufov. His father faces sanctions in Ukraine
and Canada. But for reasons that are unclear, the Yusufovs aren’t on the U.S. government’s sanctions list. So they’re investing their billions in projects like the Sunset towers. That’s right — the country we oppose in this war is freely investing billions of dollars in the United States.
Call Scott Bessent Liccardo can stop this project immediately by asking Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to put the Yusufovs on the sanctions list. The moment that happens, the 39-story tower is dead. But Liccardo’s actions on this have been baffling. Last week, he was one of 152 Democrats in the House to vote “no” on the Lindsey Graham Sanc-

tioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 (H.R. 5334). The act still passed, 262-159, on a bipartisan basis. It also passed earlier in the Senate 86-11 and was signed into law. Liccardo has declined to speak to a reporter for the Daily Post about his actions. And we haven’t seen any other public comments he’s made about his vote, which essentially said he’s OK with the Russians spending their oil money in the U.S. For what it’s worth, 58 Democrats voted for the bill, so Liccardo is definitely in the minority in his own party’s ranks. But all is not lost. There’s nothing stopping Liccardo from calling Secretary Bessent today and urging him to put the Yusufovs on the sanctions list. This issue isn’t going away If Liccardo doesn’t get the Yusufovs on the sanctions list, this issue could bite him when it hurts the
most. Liccardo is assured of winning reelection in November. He’s facing a nobody Republican who can’t even bring himself to return phone calls from the newspaper. But next year, when the construction cranes go up at 80 Willow and people see how big this building will be, Liccardo will be under enormous pressure. People will be asking him, “Why didn’t you stop this when you had the chance?” Liccardo could face a primary The door will be open for a Democrat to challenge him in the 2028 primary. The Mid-Peninsula is full of wealthy Democrats who could finance their own campaign for the House. The campaign theme would be simple — Liccardo let this skyscraper happen. And he’ll lose, badly. And then not even the Yusufovs will have pity upon him. Editor Dave Price’s column appears on Mondays.

He wasn’t vindicated
Dear Editor: The claim in “A way to stop the 39 story tower” on Sept. 16 that the Mueller Report “vindicated” President Trump is not supported by the report itself. Mueller documented sweeping Russian interference in the 2016 election and numerous contacts between Trump campaign officials and people linked to Russia. He also stated the investigation did not exonerate the president on obstruction. Several Trump associates were convicted for lying about their Russian contacts. Calling this “vindication” misrepresents the findings. Many people say the Mueller Report vindicated Trump because Mueller did not establish a criminal conspiracy be-
tween the Trump campaign and Russia and Attorney General Barr publicly framed that finding as exoneration before the full report was released. That early framing stuck, even though the report documented sweeping Russian interference, contacts between Trump associates and Russian-linked individuals, and 10 episodes of potential obstruction that Mueller said did not exonerate the president. The gap between the legal standard for conspiracy and the broader factual findings is what led some to claim vindication. Ann Morrison Menlo Park

How will deliveries be accommodated when our lots are occupied by active construction zones and staging areas? • Customer Access: Where will residents and visitors park? Diners and shoppers will simply take their business elsewhere to avoid an unpleasant environment dominated by construction noise and a severe lack of parking. • Business Retention: Small business owners will have little incentive to rent commercial space in Menlo Park if they can’t stock their stores nor accommodate customers.

1619 writer regrets ‘sacrificing’ daughter The writer behind the New York Times’ controversial “1619 Project” deliberately sent her daughter to predominantely Black, poor New York City schools as a “sacrifice” to try to boost the education system — and now the teen is “boiling” mad she didn’t get the skills she needs to succeed in life. But after years of her daughter at the schools, Hannah-Jones discovered her sharp-witted child lacked the basic skills to keep up in high school. GLP-1 drugs tied to brain condition
Two common GLP-1 weight loss drugs have been linked to a brain condition that can cause permanent brain damage and become deadly. More than one in 10 American adults are now on GLP-1s for weight loss. And while the jabs work to shed pounds and provide a host of other unexpected benefits, they can come at a cost. GLP-1s work by slowing down digestion, making us feel full for longer. The resulting decrease in appetite and food intake can lead to inadequate nutrition, including a deficiency in vitamin B1, also known as thiamine. This essential vitamin helps the brain produce energy. Without enough of it, brain cells
can’t function properly, potentially leading to Wernicke encephalopathy, a rare but serious neurological disorder that can cause permanent brain damage or death if left untreated. Researchers in Israel suspected that many people using GLP-1s could be more likely to develop a vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency. Patients and doctors should look out for these red flags: • Sudden confusion or memory changes; • Trouble with balance, coordination or walking; • Abnormal or rapid eye movements; • Severe ongoing vomiting and a total loss of appetite.

The ballot agreement against the sales tax was signed by former Mayor Lydia Kou, who said the city hasn’t been transparent: the $65.5 million sale price was negotiated with the school district behind closed doors, and the appraisal hasn’t been released. Kou said the ballot question doesn’t mention the land purchase, and the city could use the tax revenue for anything. “Maybe that’s developing Cubberley, maybe that’s installing a luxe gym on the first floor of City Hall,” Kou said in her argument. Negotiations haven’t stopped Palo Alto City Council and school board members are continuing to privately negotiate their land deal, which was approved in October 2024. “A deal is never done. We could always discuss a better deal,” Mayor Vicki Veenker said in an interview on Sept. 8. Ex-husband McCaffrey in elite company forgives wife for killing their 3 kids Christian McCaffrey put himself in some elite company with two short touchdown runs. McCaffrey’s two 1-yard TDs in a 35-13 win over the Miami Dolphins yesterday made him the fourth-fastest player in the Super Bowl era to reach 100 career touchdowns and the third player ever with at least 50 TDs with two franchises. “It means a lot,” McCaffrey said. “It’s a blessing to be able to play this game and stuff like that is always cool. But it’s always about the team and showing up and doing your job.” McCaffrey didn’t have to do a lot yesterday on a day when Brock Purdy and the rest of the offense was clicking at such a high level that the Niners scored touchdowns on their first five LEAPING SCORE — Christian McCaffrey jumps over Miami Dolphins linebacker drives. Is your neck and shoulders feeling tight and sore? If so, you might just need a little relaxation and massage at Blue Danube spa in Palo Alto. Right now, you can treat yourself to an hour of Swedish massage with hot rock therapy for just $65, which is a steal compared to the usual price of over $90.
