Good intentions go wrong Another fire at battery storage facility sends toxic cloud into the air
Clean energy advocates initially supported the idea of converting the old PG&E power plant at Moss Landing in Monterey County into a battery storage facility. They had hoped that excess renewable energy — such as solar and wind power — generated during the day could be stored so it could be supplied to the electrical grid at night or during peak demand. Then things went terribly wrong on Jan. 16, 2025. The batteries caught fire and released toxic clouds, forcing evacuations and the closure of Highway 1. Uber must pay $40 million BY LEVI SUMAGAYSAY CalMatters
Uber must pay $40 million to the parents of a woman who was struck and killed after an Uber driver left her on an Orange County freeway, an arbitrator has ruled. On Aug. 12, 2023, Uber driver Vu Tran picked up Emily Normandin-Parker and her friend, Luna Moore, from a bar. When Moore started throwing up in the car, Tran stopped at a gore point — the small, triangular area at the off-ramp — on State Route 73. As Tran and Moore argued, Normandin-Parker, 23, was struck and killed after wandering into traffic because she was inebriated, according to the ruling. Normandin-Parker’s parents

In response, Siegal said Garcia could’ve obtained a restraining order or gone to police sooner, yet she continued renewing her lease. “Despite failing to take appropriate action to protect herself, (Garcia) seeks to blame (me) for not stopping the claimed harassment,” Siegal said in his appeal. Siegal is a different person than Lenny Siegel, an activist and former Mountain View mayor. The city’s rent control law was approved by voters in November 2016. Holdout juror had no doubts
The lone juror who wanted to convict Lindsay Clancy of murder for killing her three children said he was certain of her guilt, but that other jurors wouldn’t listen to him, according to a statement released by his lawyer yesterday in his first public comments on the case. Eleven of 12 jurors were ready to clear Clancy of criminal responsibility, with the majority feeling that the Massachusetts mom was in the grip of a rare condition called postpartum psychosis when she strangled her kids. But juror Michael Desronvil sided with the prosecutors, who had argued

The jury’s foreperson had claimed in an earlier media interview that Desronvil had admitted having “reasonable doubt” about Clancy’s guilt, but wanted to convict her anyway. Desronvil said that wasn’t true. “As I tried to explain different possible theories during deliberation, I kept getting cut off as if I had doubts based on the evidence presented,” he wrote. “Based on all the physical evidence, Lindsay Clancy key witnesses, and what the prosecuthat Clancy knew what she was do- tion presented, I thought it was enough proof that she (Clancy) knew exactly ing. “I didn’t have any doubts,” Des- what she was doing and planned.”

The new cases allege about $12 million in misappropriated funds — almost all of it by Young. The bribery charges are against Lakiya Malone, an employee of the nonprofit Special Service for Groups, or SSG, who was responsible for referring homeless people to housing funded by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. Prosecutors say Malone took roughly $180,000 in bribes from Alexander Soofer, head of the now-defunct nonprofit Abundant Blessings, and in exchange steered him “ghost” participants — so he could bill for services never rendered. “She was supposed to guard the money, and instead she took bribes,” said Essayli, the first assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California.
